Zo was ik ook. Nog voor ik voor het eerst op de schoolbanken zat, raakte ik enorm gefascineerd door het geklik en geflits van camera’s en vond de job van fotograaf toen al het ‘allermooiste’ beroep dat er bestond. Op mijn zesde kreeg ik voor mijn eerste communie een klein fototoestelletje. Echt een niemendalletje, waarmee ik soms verrassend mooie foto’s wist te maken. Ik ontpopte me als een enthousiaste en heel productieve fotografe in spe. Mijn ouders moesten mij eerder intomen dan motiveren om foto’s te nemen. Tot mijn grote frustratie werd het aantal ‘dure’ filmrolletjes dat ik kreeg, zelfs gerantsoeneerd. De passie bleef echter en vanaf mijn twaalfde genoot ik het vertrouwen om de meeste familie- en vakantiefoto’s te nemen. Ik wilde dus graag fotografe worden, in het spoor van mijn talloze voorbeelden. Maar de realiteit stemde niet overeen met mijn jeugddromen. Ik kom nog uit het tijdperk waarin creatieve activiteiten zoals fotografie, kunst, dans of muziek voor de ouders enkel tot de hobbysfeer behoorden. Je mocht je erin uitleven, er goed in zijn, maar er zeker nooit je beroep van maken. Dus koos ik voor een ‘serieus’ universitair diploma en belandde zo op de rechtencampus. Fotografie werd voor een hele tijd in het hobbyhoekje geduwd. Tot ik met mijn gezin naar Argentinië verhuisde. Ik had er veel tijd vrij en kreeg zo de kans om te studeren. De studiekeuze lag voor de hand… fotografie. Carpe Diem! Het is fijn dat ultieme dromen soms werkelijkheid worden. Het leven reikt je op tijd en stond de nodige kansen en omstandigheden aan om uiteindelijk toch je grote doel te bereiken. I was like that. Even before I started primary school, I had a huge fascination for the clicks and flashes of cameras and thought being a photographer must be the “most wonderful” job in the world. When I had my first Communion at the age of six, I was given my first small camera. A cheap little thing, but I was able to take some surprisingly good photos with it. I was an “enthusiastic” and very “productive” young photographer. This enthusiasm was met with resistance from my parents, and they were inclined to limit the amount of film rolls I got. However, the passion remained and when I was 12, I was entrusted with the task of taking family photos and holiday snaps. I clearly wanted to become a photographer and follow in the footsteps of my role models. But the reality didn’t seem compatible with my dreams. I grew up at a time when parents considered creative activities such as photography, art, dance or music to be nothing more than hobbies. One could be passionate and even excel in these activities, but one could never make a career out of it. And so I went for a “serious university degree” and ended up in Law school. Photography was just a hobby for a long time, until my family and I moved to Argentina. I had plenty of free time and therefore took the opportunity to study. The subject was obvious… photography. Carpe Diem! Dreams can sometimes come true. In due course, life and circumstances provide the right conditions to enable you to achieve your goal in the end.
