AGAIN!
By Carolyn Bishop
The Wahneta Elementary School
Principal, staff, teachers and most
especially families would like to
thank the Lake Ashton Community
for their overwhelming generosity.
The School Supply Drive has filled
the school’s empty shelves and
filled backpacks for every
student at the school. Thank you
to every resident who donated a
check, supplies or time to make
this a big success. Besides all the items dropped off at the HFC and
Clubhouse from the general population, the Brennans and the Pinehurst
Loop volunteers personally donated and filled over 300 backpacks with
supplies at the HFC before getting delivered to the school. This was a
remarkable showing of what one relatively small community group could
accomplish! Thank you!
NATIONAL GOOD NEIGHBOR DAY IS
SEPTEMBER 28
Establish the mindset of a good neighbor with these
five pillars for building great neighborhoods.
The Good Neighbor Mindset
1. Connection. Introduce yourself and connect with others in your neighborhood.
It simply starts by saying, “Hello."
2. Invitation. Invite neighbors to join you for a meal or something fun.
Gather around a table because the Latin word "communitas" means the spirit of community
and it's measured by the number of meals shared together.
3. Celebration. When it comes to birthdays, anniversaries or milestone moments in the
lives of others, cheer them on and don't miss out on congratulating them.
4. Awareness. Keep your eyes and ears open. Stay attentive to the safety and security
of the people and homes nearby. We are safer and stronger together.
5. Availability. Availability is the highest benefit of good neighbors who truly care and
look out for one another. When needed, show up to help and support others living around you.

2023 fiscal year that begins on October 1, 2022. The
Board voted on an operations and maintenance
assessment of $2,269 per unit for FY 2023, a $300
increase. A digital copy of the adopted budget is available
for viewing on lakeashtoncdd.com under "Budgets". The
upcoming CDD Meeting schedule was also adopted and
meetings will continue to be held on the third Monday of
each month from October 2022 – September 2023. There
are two exceptions: the meetings in January and February 2023 will be held on the fourth Monday (January
23 and February 27). A wrap up report of additional Board actions was sent out on August 19 via email.
Residents that would like a copy of this report should email Christine at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com.
As many new residents are welcomed to the community, there is higher demand than ever for tickets and
activity registrations. Please get in the habit of bringing a Lake Ashton identification card when coming to the
Clubhouse to purchase tickets or when using any of the amenities at Lake Ashton. This is helpful in getting to
know all of the new residents in Lake Ashton not to
mention many events and activities are available to
residents only when first released so bringing a resident ID
helps to identify residents quickly. Residents may purchase
tickets for their guests two weeks after tickets go on sale to
residents. The only exception to this is the Entertainment
Series Season Tickets which are available for residents only.
If individual tickets are available then those may be
purchased by residents for their guests, two weeks after
tickets go on sale to residents. Please direct any questions
to Christine at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. Enjoy the last
few weeks of summer (remember to stay hydrated) and
don't forget hurricane season doesn't end until November
30. Stay prepared!
Join the Garden Club, Supervisors, and
Staff at the Clubhouse Pet Play Park on
Tuesday, September 6 at 9 am to help
install two Oak Trees. Gene the Barefoot
Gardener will be helping with installing
the trees and will also be answering any
questions residents have regarding the
trees and why they were chosen for this
area. These trees will be at Lake Ashton
for years to come for everyone to enjoy.

Hello September! Some of our residents will
begin coming back to Lake Ashton this
month and we welcome them back to some
great events for this fall. The HFC Media
Center welcomes any resident to help with
the new 3D puzzle of the White House. If
this is successful, we will get more of these.
We
have
a
couple of
new activity
opportunities that we’re working on, and
staff is excited about them! After more of
the details are ironed out, a news blast will
be forthcoming soon. We’re always looking
for expanding your choices for fun and
learning, so if you have some additional
ideas, we’d love to hear from you. There is a
suggestion box inside the HFC Media Center
or stop in and share in person.
The LA II CDD Board met on August 19th.
Very importantly, there will be no increase in
the Operations and Maintenance
assessments for FY 2023 for residents living
in the Winter Haven area of Lake Ashton. It
was voted upon to keep JaniKing Cleaning Services at the HFC. Stop in and say hello to Enrique…
he’s cleaning Mondays thru Fridays. On Monday, August 29th there was a Joint Lake Ashton District
Workshop to further discuss the Joint Amenities Policies. That information is not available at the
time this LA Times is published, but media has been sent out regarding possible changes/additions
to those policies. If you have any questions, please contact either the HFC Activities Desk or the
Clubhouse Activities Desk. Formal minutes of these meetings can be found at the Lake Ashton II
CDD website at lakeashton2cdd.com.
Make sure to read The Lake Ashton West Connection
this month as a very special person is in the resident
highlight. Jack Davenport turned 100 years old
recently and he’s our feature for this month’s edition.
They are available at the HFC Reception Area. We’re
always very interested in our residents, so if you are,
or know of a person who would like to be featured,
please contact mbosman@lakeashton2cdd.com.
12
Stop by the HFC Thursday, September
22 at 1 pm to sign up for a free
produce bag with an informational
seminar about healthcare plans. There
will be a signup sheet next to the
Activities Desk.

863-368-0699 or Sandelly7@gmail.com.
DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECKS
Residents and guests entering via the visitors gate at
the entrance located on Thompson Nursery Road
should be prepared to show their driver's license when
checking in with the Security Officer on duty. This is
done to confirm the identity of the person entering the
community. This is a procedure designed to add an
additional level of security for residents' peace of mind
14
The final phase of the HFC LED lighting project is
completed. The lights are brighter, and costs are
going down due to this yearlong effort. There are
also other ways to save energy at the HFC. When
you are done with your event in any of the hallway
rooms, please adjust the wall thermostat back to
the 74-75 degrees which is the standard. The
Fitness Room, the Community Center, the Sports
Court, and the Racquetball Courts have
programmed thermostats that are enclosed in a
clear case. If you are using one of those rooms,
staff will need to be notified well in advance of your
event if you want a temperature change. The
Fitness Room, however, will always be kept at the
recommended 70 degrees for fitness training.
Please call the Activities Office @ 863-595-1562 if
you need assistance. The Activities Office is not
open on weekends, so please call Monday thru
Friday from 8 AM until 4 PM with requests. Last,
but not least, closing the ice machine door and
turning off the TV’s, fans, and lights when not in use
will also help to conserve energy usage. We all
need to be good stewards of energy consumption.
PHOTO CONTEST
Thank you to all the Lake Ashton residents who
submitted their best shots representing life at
Lake Ashton. Stay tuned to media in the month
of September as blast emails will go out with
instructions on how to vote for the winners.

LA ( LW) HOA CORNER
By David Muller
Lake Ashton has the benefit of standards to keep
the community beautiful. The CDD is responsible
for everything from the end of your driveway
throughout the community and the HOA is
responsible for everything beginning at your
driveway to your home. Your cooperation as a
resident is what makes Lake Ashton beautiful.
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) helps
you with your wishes for changes to your property
within the standards already established by you,
the general population. ARC Tracker is the new
software program you must use to submit requests
for changes. Go to arc.lakeashtonhoa.org, type in
your email address, and you will be prompted to
create a new account.
LARGEST SELECTION OF INDOOR
& OUTDOOR FANS ANYWHERE!
TRADITIONAL MODERN CONTEMPORAR
ANS
An email from noreply@arctracker.email will be
sent to you confirming the registration. Make sure
to add this address to your contacts as this will be
the email all ARC communication will come
from. Once you have completed the registration
process, you will be able to log in and enter an
ARC Request (see top left). You will also be able to
see all current ARC Requests from residents,
request paint books, view the ARC Guidelines.
The ARC and HOA Board of Directors need good
people who want to uphold the community
standards. Without you volunteering to help, we
would not be able to keep Lake Ashton the
community it is and keep it that way for the future.
Everyone has things to do, people to see, fun and
frolic and also some sort of responsibility as
residents to keep Lake Ashton the place it is.
Please consider becoming a member of the ARC
by contacting the ARC Chair. Consider guiding
Lake Ashton as an HOA Board member. Get on
the ballot next election time. Show everyone you
care about our standards. Think about helping out
on committees and please attend meetings in
person or virtually when given the opportunity.

QUESTIONS ABOUT
RETENTION PONDS DURING
SUMMER MONTHS
Wildlife
Corner
Photo & Article By Barbara
Ann Comer
Why is the algae in my pond not being
treated?
Lake Ashton CDD staff works closely with our
aquatics contractor to ensure all treatments are
being completed. During the summer months
algae is fueled from the warm waters, sunny
days, and large amounts of rain. Rain allows for
“runoff” to seep into the ponds which provide
food for unwanted plants, like algae. The
aquatics technician is allowed to treat the ponds
with approved chemicals and the frequency is
every two weeks, which is determined by
Southwest Florida Water Management District.
My pond is full — will there be flooding if we
have a hurricane?
Each pond Lake Ashton CDD owns is designed
to prevent flooding. Residents may notice a
concrete structure in their pond. This man-made
concrete structure is called an outfall structure.
This is the discharge point for stormwater that
prevents flooding and overflowing.
Are algae blooms harmful?
Algae is a natural component of the aquatic food
chain and is not typically harmful to people.
When will my pond begin to look better?
The fall and winter months help substantially in
reducing algae blooms. Cooler weather and less
rain make pond conditions less desirable for
algae to thrive.
If there are any questions or concerns, email
Matt Fisher at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.
Please view the insert provided in this issue

The Little Blue
Heron is a tricky
one. It isn't always
"blue." These small
herons start out white
and then get blotches
of blue throughout their
feathers (see above)
before they finally turn
totally "blue" (dark slaty
blue - pictured at right) as full adults (at about a
year old). Little Blues "part way through" can be
very interesting looking! The way to tell an all
white immature Little Blue Heron from a Snowy
Egret is subtle at first. The Little Blue has dull
yellow legs and feet (Snowy's have the golden
slippers). Little Blues also have a thicker bill
which is two-toned with a gray base and a dark
tip. A bi-colored bill rules out Snowy. If the bird
flies away uttering a squawk of annoyance it's
probably a Little Blue. There are plenty of Little
Blues at Lake Ashton to practice your
identification skills on. Getting a photo can help.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Preparing For Hurricanes With Crime Prevention In Mind (courtesy of Law Enforcement)
The opportunity for crimes to occur after a disaster, such as a hurricane, can increase if we don’t take a
few steps of prevention.
Assess your home for vulnerable areas:
• Do a walk through of your home and property to evaluate roof, windows, garage doors and
landscaping to determine what actions you may need to take.
• Keep in mind tree limbs close to the home that could break windows; window locks that are loose; door
jams that are weak and sliding glass doors without additional locks.
Secure Your Home:
Decide what actions need to be taken to protect your property (shutters, tree trimming, additional locks,
or window film) to keep you and your family safe.
Secure Property if Damage Does Occur:
If you sustained damage, take immediate actions by assessing the damage and making arrangements to
secure the property, even if it means temporary repairs.
PEAK STORM SEASON
Hurricane season ends November 30, but
the peak storm season runs from mid-August to late
October. All residents should be prepared for severe
weather. A list of storm season tips can be found at
lakeashtoncdd.com or at the Clubhouse Activities
Desk. Pay attention to the lightning detection devices
throughout the community and seek shelter when the
sirens sound.

Please be safe when coming through the community entrances. There have been recent reports
of tailgating, speeding, cutting people off, and hitting gate arms. This is a busy area and Security
Officers are often outside checking vendors and visitors in and we want that area to be as safe as possible
for them and everyone else. Please keep in mind there will be a charge incurred by anyone that hits
a gate and staff is required to reattach the gate or replace it.
ROAD SAFETY
Please keep in mind the streets in Lake Ashton are very
narrow and there are many forms of traffic heightening
the danger during busy times. The following practices
will help alleviate dangerous situations on the road.
Please encourage vendors doing work at your home to
follow the practices below to ensure the roads of Lake
Ashton are as safe as possible. Remember, a complete
stop means stopping just before the white stop bar,
whether before or after the posted stop sign. It only
takes a moment to follow the traffic controls in place to
potentially prevent a serious accident.
• Do not park a vehicle directly parallel to another
vehicle
• Do not park on a curve
• Park as close to the curb as possible
20
All vehicles, including
golf carts, must obey
all stop signs and the
20 mph speed limit
throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, watch
for pedestrians at all
times. Obeying posted
speed limit and traffic
signs can help avert a
potential tragedy.

After emigrating from Nigeria to
Greece, the Antetokounmpo family
struggles to survive and provide for their five
children, while living under the daily threat of
deportation. When they weren't selling items to
tourists on the streets of Athens with the rest of
the family, the brothers - Giannis (Uche Agada)
and Thanasis (Ral Agada) - would play basketball
with a local youth team. Latecomers to the sport,
they discovered their great abilities on the
basketball court and worked hard to become
world class athletes, along with brother, Kostas
(Jaden Osimuwa). With the help of an agent,
Giannis entered the NBA Draft in 2013 in a long
shot prospect that would change not only his life
but the life of his entire family. And last season,
Giannis and Thanasis helped bring the Milwaukee
Bucks their first championship ring in 50 years,
while Kostas played for the previous season
champs, the Los Angeles Lakers.

LALGA
By Lydia Fichtman
The LALGA is sponsoring another creative event
for the entire Lake Ashton golf community. Coming
off a successful Nine, Wine and Dine, Martinis,
Mulligans and Munchies will take place on Friday
evening, September 30 at 4 pm. The event will
include a nine-hole scramble with each team
having a mulligan to use at their discretion, five
incredibly delicious martini tastings with food
pairings to match. Get your foursome together and
sign up beginning September 12.
In preparation for the return of the snowbirds, the
league is working hard to create tournaments and
activities for all to enjoy. November 6 will kick off
the Pink Ribbon Tournament with a dance featuring
the Rusty Trumpet Band. A prize will be awarded
for the best decorated table. This year, the entire
table must be purchased in full for $80. There will
be no $10 deposit required. Get together with
your friends and buy your table(s) beginning
October 1. Also available at the dance will be a
preview of the Silent Auction items. Raffle tickets
will be sold (5 for $10) so don’t miss out on a
chance to win some of the amazing raffles. This
year, in order to make the tournament and
luncheon run more smoothly the committee has
decided to make it a Chinese Auction rather than a
straight raffle. You may choose the items you wish
to win. Good luck! Two days later, November 8, the
Pink Ribbon Scramble Tournament will take place
with a luncheon to follow. All funds raised benefit
the Watson Clinic Foundation and to date Lake
Ashton has donated just over $80,000. The
committee is hoping to exceed the $100,000
donation mark this year. So, sponsor the event,
buy your dance and raffle tickets, mulligans, bows,
socks, shoelaces, flowers and bid on the silent
auction items; all in an effort to help support this
remarkable cause.

Meet Alina Lindstrom
Alina has just recently joined the
LALGA. Born in Cuba, Alina lived
much of her life in South Florida. She
has worked for several companies but
has spent most of her adult life as a
paralegal. She met her husband John
in Coconut Grove and eight months after their first
date they were married. Alina says, “John is the
nicest person you would ever want to meet.” They
were married on July 4 and just celebrated their
37th anniversary. Alina and John have 3 children
and 4 grandchildren. For 8 ½ years Alina and John
traveled the country in their RV. In 2020, while
walking their dog, Alina noticed an RV with a Lake
Ashton license plate. She remarked to John that it
was time they settled down and sold the RV. After
fully investigating everything Lake Ashton had to
offer, they decided that LA was where they wanted
to spend their golden years. John wanted golf and
Alina, activities. Alina began playing golf four years
ago with a year of lessons at the Sebring’s
Municipal Golf Course. After moving to LA she met
Karen Ferrande who introduced her to the Niners.
She played with the Niners for a bit before she
decided to move over to the LALGA so she “could
beat her husband in golf.” As hobbies, Alina makes
landscape quilts, plays pickleball, bowls, reads and
loves to travel. Alina is excited to be a part of the
LALGA and thinks the league has a “lovely group
of ladies. “Every lady I’ve met so far is a boatload
of fun,” according to Alina. She is “looking forward
to spending many years of enjoyment in this
community.” Welcome to the league, Alina
Lindstrom!

Discuss His Real Estate Work
Brad Kirwan’s Real Estate Skills Stands Out
The thing that stands out with me is Brad was perceptive
to what I as the seller needed to accomplish. There are
other things to care about in addition to the sale of the
house. Brad is friendly and his smile genuine. He
communicated clearly; and I feel he is an excellent and
fair negotiator. I would nominate him for the Realtor of
the Year Award.

ANOTHER Hole-InOne!
On July 14,
during Mixer
League, Marti
Schmidt (yes, this
author, pictured at
left) got a hole-inone
on 3 West (yes,
the dreaded overthe-water-shot).
Two Niners actually made hole in
ones during the month of July – must be some kind
of record here at Lake Ashton! Janet Luke was
featured for her feat in the previous issue of the LA
Times.
If you were wondering, here’s a bit of information
about our league: The LA Niners Golf Association is
organized for weekly play of nine holes of golf. Our
league is a great place for beginners to learn the
game of golf, its rules and etiquette, and for
seasoned golfers to improve and continue their love
for the game in a very comfortable, encouraging,
and social environment. We enjoy different and fun
games of nine-hole golf each week, monthly lunch
with friends, occasional tournaments with other
leagues and season opening and ending luncheons.
It’s a great way to meet other golfers, have a good
time, and create long lasting friendships. There are
annual and summer membership options. Niners
membership has grown to over 100 players. The
next season starts on October 4. Looking forward
to seeing you all there! Still have questions? Ready

LAVA
AUXILIARY
By Chris Graves
BOLLA
By Linda Warden
The meeting this month is September 21 at 6:30 pm
in the ballroom near the stage. This will be a very
focused meeting regarding the upcoming Craft Fair
and upcoming events to support the troops.
Although there were no meetings this summer, the
Team Captains for the various committees have
been busy. Anyone considering joining this group is
invited to come by. It will be a wonderful
opportunity to experience the generosity of this
group and of course, your VP here is about smiles.
The 2022 Craft Show is October 22 and bakers are
needed! The Craft Show Bake Shop was very
successful last year. The top items sold were cookies,
banana bread or other loaf breads (large or small).
Pies and cakes were also popular. In addition, we
invite you to support our vendors. Call Chris at 863514-5368
or Joan at 239-851-7899.
LAVA VIDEO INTERVIEW
OPPORTUNITY
BOLLA wants to give a big
thank you to Vicki Creek and
her team and the ladies of Sew
What for all their help. These ladies finished the
edges of some of the blankets and ponchos that
BOLLA gives to the schools and the homeless. Great
job, ladies! This mission couldn’t be done without
the help of the giving people in this wonderful
community. As always, BOLLA meets on Monday at
1 pm in the Clubhouse Craft Room. Please join!
GENEALOGY CLUB MEETING

your ancestors but don't know what to do with
them? Come to the meeting September 14 at 2

GARDEN
CLUB
By Lyn Davis
The Garden Club team
LAVA is hosting a video interview team from the
Library of Congress that will visit Lake Ashton
October 8 & 9 to interview local veterans. You do
not need to be a LAVA member to be interviewed.
This is the team’s third visit to Lake Ashton because
of the large veteran population and their willingness
to share their military stories. Interviews are open to
Lake Ashton veterans of all branches and ranks,
whether or not they served in a combat zone. Each
interview lasts approximately 45 minutes after a brief
orientation and will be held in the Clubhouse Card
Room. Veterans wishing to be interviewed must
have appointment — contact LAVA coordinator Cal
Posner at calposner@aol.com or 678-464-7331 to
schedule. There is no charge for the interviews and
they will be available to the public at the library’s
website under the “Veterans History Project” tab.
has been busy planning
for fall even though
meetings have been on
hiatus. This past August

the Garden Club helped Camp Lake Ashton
construct patio stones. The talent in the
community, support and participation was
outstanding! The club also provided plants for the
macrame planters that many talented people
made in the Camp Lake Ashton macrame event!
Please join the group on September 14 in the
Craft Room at 10 am. Ideas for the fall, how to
move forward, and what members value for future
meetings will be discussed. A special thank you to
Activities Assistant Caroline who felt confident in
the club, provided support ,and made Camp Lake
Ashton a success!

SINGLES CLUB
By Maureen Ziegler
LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for
single residents. The group meets monthly on the
first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. In August, the group
discussed several outings and get togethers. Plans
were discussed for dinners and lunches during
August. The Single Mingle held on the third
Thursday of the month in the Pavilion will be
moved during the remaining hot months. In
August, it was held in the HFC Craft Room. If you
would like to take part in activities with other
singles, attend the meeting on September 4.
LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
Attention, residents who like to swim for fitness &
health but don't feel safe doing it alone. The LA
Swim Club solves that safety i ssue by
offering three workout times each week (Mondays
at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1:45 pm, and Saturdays at
10 am). Swimmers either follow a club-provided
written workout or do their own thing. For those
who wish to improve stroke efficiency or learn new
sk i l l s , the c l ub' s vol unteer i ns t ruc tor /
coach provides tips.
Many club members enjoy the camaraderie and
swim simply for fitness. For those who like (or
need) motivation, the club has a swim-for-distance
challenge chart and we encourage members to
participate in regional Senior Games Swimming
competition. The competition is divided by gender
and age (5-year groupings from 50 to 100+).
Speaking of which, we have four members who
will compete in the 21st Annual Gainesville Senior
Games swim meet on September 11.

LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer;
those days of painting, and friendships, and
cheer. Time sure flies when having a good time
and now summer is almost done. The group will
continue to meet in the HFC Community Center
on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm. Various
members will continue to share their skills and you
can do a lot of "paint what you enjoy
painting". The point is not to paint a master piece,
but to have a good time. Newcomers are always
welcome and will be lent the supplies needed for
your first meeting. A lot of people say that they
want to come but can't paint or draw. Well, we
proved that isn't necessary in one of the classes in
August when everyone dropped different colored
paint on rocks and created a pattern by blowing
through a straw. After the rock dried, words were
written on the unique backgrounds — and voila,
pieces of art that your friends in Lake Ashton love
to find. If you are here and want to enjoy a lovely
afternoon with a great group of people, please
join the meetings September 7 and 21. In order to
attend, join the Facebook group "LA Rockers" or
contact MJ Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com)
or Connie Strassberg (cbs1949@aol.com) to say
you are coming. If the meeting has to be canceled
at the last minute, it will be posted on the LA
Rockers Facebook group page. If in doubt, check
before you come.
Also, please continue sending prayers for Alice
Mayer's recovery — your prayers are seriously
working wonders.
