Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
2022 is officially our 125th Anniversary and although we’ve only
played here at Gorton Street for the last 75 years we’ve always had
our home in this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Mini’s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and I’m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, £40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. We’d not be able to operate without their contributions. I can’t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
‘Walking Rugby’ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those who’d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.
Once again, welcome to the club and please enjoy your day. Our clubhouse
bar is CAMRA award-winning and (for those over the age of 18)
I’m informed has a fine selection of match refreshment, especially
with our new friends from the First Chop Brewery.
Mark Dutton // Eccles RFC President

A warm welcome to all our supporters and visitors at Eccles RFC today. The Spring has
arrived bringing with it sunshine and renewed growth. Our pitches are looking in fine
condition due in no small part to the weekly efforts of our grounds team. If you see a
'fossil’ in the bar please buy him a pint and whilst you’re there, please buy the referee
a pint too. Without the dedicated commitment of these old farts we’d have no rugby to
enjoy.
Our 1XV opponents today, Ormskirk, find themselves at the foot of the division
battling alongside Eccles, Oldham and Wigan for points, with their last win on the road
away at Liverpool Collegiate back in January. The reverse fixture at Ormskirk, on the
opening day of the season last September, featured a very youthful Eccles side with
over half of the squad under 21 years of age and four fresh 18 year olds making their
senior league debuts. Eccles started brightly that day, ‘ veteran’ Chris Fortune opening
the scoring within 7 minutes and we were comfortably ahead at the break, before
second half errors eroded our lead and put the result in the balance, before regaining
composure and winning the game 22-24 through a second try from stand off Dan
Reed late in the game, who slipped through a gap to dot down behind the posts. Since
then Dan has gone on to enjoy a good season in the Lancashire U20 squad and the
Eccles 1XV has continued to suffer from an inconsistent line up due to injuries and
player availability. I expect today’s team sheet will again feature a number of our homegrown
former colts who are showing great promise as we build to the future. I wish both
teams the very best of luck in their endeavours today
Although our Senior teams have struggled to find consistency and victories on the
field this season, the atmosphere in the clubhouse at the weekend is now returning to
its best. We’re working hard at Eccles to overcome the set backs of COVID by promoting
the game and invigorating its growth within our community. Since last summer, the
club has taken big strides forwards with its Mini & Junior rugby, with increased players
across all 10 teams. Whist other clubs have curtailed their development of youth due
to a decline in numbers, we’re a hive of activity on Sunday mornings and we’ll continue
to invest our energies into cultivating our own #homegrown talent - the future team
mates of our senior teams at Eccles.
Our Community Rugby Coach is engaged with local schools and the club is now
growing at a healthy pace with over 470 members. Of course, this surge in participation
and the maintenance of our facilities would not be possible without the invaluable
assistance we receive from our sponsors and the continued commitment of our volunteers.
Supporting the club's activities can be very rewarding so if you’d like to get
involved and put something back in to this community please do step forward.
Whichever team you’re supporting this weekend, I hope you enjoy your match experience
at Eccles. Thank you for your support in this our 125th Anniversary year. Let’s get
stuck in!

Hello & a very warm welcome to Gorton street this spring Saturday
afternoon from all at Eccles RFC
The senior men welcome Ormskirk RUFC to the home of the men in
blue & white hoops today and Eccles Captain James Wright will be
wanting a better performance from his men than he got from them in
their last outing over in Oldham a week ago.
Looking back to the game at Ormskirk early in the season Eccles dominated
the first half with some exceptional rugby but didn’t score the
points to put the game to bed allowing Ormskirk’s confidence to grow
entering the second half which saw an end to end second 40 which
Eccles managed to come away from victorious. Little did I know then
that this game was going to be the story of Eccles’s season seeing very
little commitment to playing rugby on a weekly basis from the squad
especially more senior players, allowing a vast amount of players new to
the club as well as transitioning Colts to gain valuable but sometimes
frustrating minutes at first team level.
Eccles finish the season with 2 home games over the easter period and
I’m confident we can continue to develop as a group giving opportunities
to these young men to support their personal journey’s which I’m certain
will benefit the club next season & the season’s to follow after that.
Thanks for coming I hope you have a great afternoon.
Sam Simpson // Eccles RFC Director of Rugby

Spotlight on … Eccles U8s
Eccles Under 8s are an awesome outfit. Experts of tag and hotdog
connoisseurs, this band of warriors are readying for full contact Rugby
Union…
Led by Head Coach Alan Bent, this team have a fierceness and flair in
equal measure. Benty’s expertise in coaching Mini Rugby has imprinted
on another battalion and they’re stepping up to the mark. From his tried
and tested training techniques to his warmth and understanding; Alan
still sets the tone and standard for coaching youngsters at Eccles.
Expertly assisted by all of Stuart, Sam, Allan, Gaz and Kyne…the strength
runs deep in this team and the lads are lucky to have such helpful hands
at every turn. Team manager Carmel makes the job look easy. A valued
volunteer at Eccles, Carmel juggles everything from fixtures, first aid and
fantastic photos in between!
Fielding multiple teams on a weekly basis, the boys are competitive and
compassionate. A focus on the core values of teamwork and communication
are the backbone of this unit. Boasting siblings up and down the
Junior section has secured their future as Eccles Juniors. Their smiling
faces and budding talents are exciting spectators and visitors aplenty.
Both dogged and determined in attack and defence, they are looking
forward to contact rugby in September. Their Minis experience has been
fun, fast and flamboyant. But when these boys get a chance to run
without tags, we think they’ll be a real, #homegrown HIT!

Congratulations...
...to Eccles Ladies player Lucy Whailing-Mills on her selection for Lancashire
U18s.
'Pebbles' only began playing touch rugby at Eccles with dad John Whailing
in summer 2020 during the COVID lockdown and when restrictions
allowed she started training with the women, quickly learning her trade,
becoming one of our youngest senior squad members.
She played in the GMGN cluster fixtures, joining other teams to get
game time and made her debut for Eccles Ladies shortly after turning 17
in January, earning her title “the turnover queen”.
When the opportunity to trial for Lancashire presented itself, Ladies
head coach James Wright encouraged her to go for it and she earned her
place on the squad.
Eccles Ladies Captain Rowanne Smalley commented "Pebbles has a
history in Judo which means she’s a beast in contact, with great body
management and super strong. When she gets on the pitch she tears it
up. She’s a versatile player who has already learnt so much, and is
constantly turning up with the right attitude wanting to be better. She’s
a superstar and we just love her."
What a terrific role model, balancing study commitments with sporting
dedication. Go for it Pebbles!

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so we’re within the RFU guidelines, and
we’re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

DUKE OF EDINBURGHS AWARD
In 2011 Eccles RFC became the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the Duke of
Edinburgh (DofE) award scheme for its
young people aged 14 to 24. A decade on,
our DofE award scheme has grown from
strength to strength, and can take great
pride in the attainment of over 200
prestigious awards (48 Gold, 62 Silver,
127 Bronze) achieved by its players. This
remarkable success is a testament to the
committed effort and dedicated persistence
of our participants and the club
volunteers who lead the programme.
The DofE award gives young people the
chance to learn new skills for life. Consisting
of four areas of personal endeavour -
Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition
(plus a Residential experience at Gold
level), the DofE inspires and encourages
commitment, personal development and
an adventurous spirit in young people to
help
resilience
them gain
to
the
confidence
and
successfully overcome
whatever life throws their way. The award
programme compliments Rugby activities
here at the club and instills in our future
adults the importance of team work and
tenacity in reaching goals.
To celebrate our 10-year association with
the DofE Award scheme, this season the
club decided to proudly emblazon all new
Eccles RFC Mini and Junior Rugby shirts
with the DofE award crest. This initiative
was supported by Seward Refrigeration
and the Morson Group who provided the
financial security to ensure that every
Mini and Junior player, aged 5 to 16, could
be provided with a new full kit.
Anyone who has visited the club this
season on a Sunday morning will agree
it's been heart-warming to see hundreds
of kids running out in those sparkling new
Navy and White hoops! Although our
sponsors did not make their
commitment
for
reasons ofpublicity we think
it only right and proper that we take this
opportunity to recognise and express our
appreciation of their patronage, without
which we could not do what we do.
Eccles Rugby Football Club and our DofE
award scheme is steadfast in its principles
of inclusivity. There are many families
within this district suffering hardship and
it remains important to us that no
member is denied the opportunity to
participate as a result of financial
contraints.
Providing the DofE Award is not without
costs. The club holds a central stock of
equipment (tents, maps, compasses,
cooking stoves, gas etc) but in addition to
the annual £1500 licence fee we also
need to replace the majority of our tents
this coming year due to rodent damage
caused whilst in storage during the Covid
lockdown. So, we are delighted to confirm
that the M&J Christmas events helped to
raise £400 for our club's DofE section!
Thank you all for your generosity and
support it makes a difference. CG.

“1997 Centenary Match”
Today our 1XV entertain Ormskirk RUFC who were founded in the
1926/27 Season by “enthusiasts who had played the game at public
school”. The first captain, Dennis Suffern, was the son of a local doctor
and matches were played at the back of the Eureka Hotel, on land owned
by Thomas Coulton, whose son, Joe, became the next captain. Their first
official game was against King George V School, Southport. Ormskirk
were unable to find a permanent ground for some years, playing at
Churchfields and Cottage Lane before in the mid 1950's the Green Lane
pitches became available and with the approval of the local council, and
after a great financial struggle, the ground was obtained and the present
clubhouse was opened in 1965.
Eccles RFC appear to have had their first fixture with Ormskirk three
years after formation on 28th October, 1929. The Eccles journal reported
"Eccles arrived at Ormskirk late and the match was confined to thirty
minutes each way. Whoever secured the ball either from the scrum or
lineout was quickly tackled. The home team frequently kicked to advantage,
but were effectively prevented from scoring. Neither team secured
points up to half time. After a few minutes play in the second half, an
infringement from which a penalty goal resulted gave Ormskirk the lead.
Superior combinations transferred the ball to Ormskirk's five yard line,
where a long struggle and good work by the forwards enabled F. F.
Townsend (Eccles Captain),
to record a try which J. H. Bickershaw
improved. Frequent kicking gained ground for Ormskirk, but their finishing
was poor, though their tactics prevented Eccles from further scoring.
Ormskirk 3 v Eccles 5. The return fixture was played on 19th April,1930.

“1997 Centenary Match”
Extracts from the Eccles RFC committee minute books:
50 years ago. 1972.
24th April, 1972 - Easter Monday, Eccles played the Welsh touring team, Seven Sisters.
A letter of thanks had been received from the tourists from Neath, West Glamorgan. The
local coal pit owner, Evan Evans-Bevan, had named the colliery after his seven daughters
in 1872. The Eccles committee observed that, "despite one or two minor setbacks, the
day had been a great success.” The previous week it was noted in the minute book
regarding arrangements for the Easter Touring team. Mr. R. Erlston (bar secretary) said
that he would ensure that the bar was sufficiently well stocked. A firm order for catering
for both Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday had been made by Mr. D. Brown (secretary)
as it was a busy weekend for fixtures:
1st April - Eccles 1st XV v Prestwich; Eccles 3rd XV v Prestwich; Colts XV v Widnes.
A. G. M. 5th June, 1972
3rd April (Easter Monday) - Eccles v Seven Sisters.
The Colts once again, had a very good season - played 31, won 23, lost 8.
Eccles 1st XV playing record - played 46, won 22, lost 22, drawn 2.
In the Griffin plaque competition Eccles had again reached the final, only to lose 21-4
against Didsbury Toc H.
Chairman Ron Pennington thanked Ray Cook, serving on the Social committee, for "his
efforts entertaining us and for the money he has raised. I trust he will continue the good
work.” Well done Ray, still supporting the club on Saturday afternoons.
25 years ago. 1997.
Three main events were held to celebrate the Centenary season in 1997:
The Centenary match - between the Exiles and Eccles 40s featured a few familiar names
from the two teams - Pickersgill, Dore, Wilkinson, Bent, Nicholls, Erlston, Leigh, Jones,
Fritton, Griffiths, Sulway.
The Centenary Dinner - 9th May, 1997. Invited guests included Phil Bennett OBE (29
Welsh caps, captaining the side to 2 triple crowns and a grand slam), Brian Leigh
(Chairman of the Manchester District Referees Society, Secretary of Lancs County RFC)
and Dr. Terry Crystal (England team doctor).
The Centenary Dinner Dance - held on the 14th June, 1997.

not enough.
Eccles 17-25 Liverpool St Helens
Saturday 19 March 2022
Liverpool St Helens arrived at
Gorton Street in decent form,
being unbeaten in 9 of their last
11 ADM Premier fixtures since
defeating Eccles 18-5 last November
at Moss Lane. For probably the
first time this season, Eccles were
able to name a team with only a
handful of changes from the previous
outing and hoped this rare
consistency in line up would
provide an 80-minute performance.
The
game got underway in beautiful
spring sunshine which had
encouraged a good turn out of
supporters. The visitors enjoyed
the early attacking pressure for
the opening 5 minutes but Eccles
stood strong inside their own 22
and play eventually moved back to
the midfield where it remained for
the next 10 minutes, without
either side mounting a serious
threat to score. LSH looked to have
the larger pack but Eccles
appeared to cope with this. With
about 20 minus played the deadlock
was broken with speed not
power,
the LSH Winger making a
good break down the right flank,
and drawing the Eccles defence
out wide, putting a nice pass back
inside to his supporting Fullback
(Johnson) to run in and claim the
first Try. 0-5.
Eccles struggled to respond to this
set back as LSH built attacking
pressure from the restart. Unable
to escape their own half Eccles
were inviting trouble. On 37’ LSH
broke through on the left and with
the benefit of a missed tackle the
winger (Dickinson) ran the ball in
under the sticks for a Try and
straightforward conversion to give
the visitors a comfortable lead as
the game headed into halftime. HT
0-12.
Following the break, Eccles make
a concerted effort to make
progress and were more aggressive
and confident in their play. On
55’ Wright , Fortune and Candland
combined to break through in the
centre, Flanker Adam Christey hit
the fringe on the right and offloaded
out of the back door to supporting
winger Will Parkinson who
used terrific footwork to avoid the
touch line and score in the corner.
5-12 TRY ECCLES.
Eccles were now playing with
more belief and determination. On
65’ a quick reaction to a penalty in
the midfield, play moved out to the

over
to LSH! Wood strikes his
right and a James Wright pass
fired out to the right touchline
found Chris Fortune whose spidey
sences helped him catch the ball
behind him, pirouette, and leave
LSH heads spinning as he raced in
to score. 10-12 TRY ECCLES.
Eccles had their tails up. Young
back row Ryley Thornton made a
couple of barnstorming breaks.
Will Parky was unlucky to loose his
footing after his mazy weaving run
through the middle cut LSH open.
But the fight back was unfortunately
short lived as Eccles lost
their focus and heads in a costly
5-minute period. On 72’ LSH set a
platform for their number 8 (Hull)
to crash through and score a third
try to the side of the sticks.
Converted 10-19. Following the
restart a Penalty is awarded to
LSH, the kick is accurate. 10-22.
As the players retake their
positions to recommence play
complaints from Eccles persist
second penalty in as many
minutes, this one from the
halfway line, straight through the
posts. 10-25.
Having given away these points
so cheaply, Eccles were now made
to work hard to regain their
momentum as they pounded away
at a tiring LSH defence. On 78’ a
Penalty Try was awarded to Eccles
in the right corner, as Damola
crashed over to score and the LSH
number 21 was given a yellow
card for use of his shoulder. 17-25
PENALTY TRY ECCLES.
It was a feisty end to the contest
as Eccles attacked and a
stretched LSH held on. Possession
was
turned
over
to
the
exuberant delight of their 8 and
LSH kicked to touch so the match
official could bring the game to a
close. Eccles gave a strong
second half performance and
were capable of taking the win,
but lacked cool clinical calmness
when required and offered little
attacking threat in the first period.

Eccles Rugby Football Club encourage
Spectators to:
• Act as a positive role model to all.
• Behave with dignity and generosity.
• Support your club’s efforts to uphold its reputation.
• Respect Rugby’s values. Discipline and Sportsmanship
define our game.
• Respect the match officials' decisions, even if they
appear to make a mistake. Remember, they are volunteers
and without them there would be no game.
• Encourage all players irrespective of their ability.
Never ridicule a player, regardless of the shirt they
wear.
• Appreciate good performance and achievement
from all players, irrespective of their team.
• Acknowledge effort and endeavour rather than the
desire to 'win at all cost'.
• Support the players. Shout ‘for’ them not ‘at’ them.
• Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials
or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour
affects the players and referee’s performance and
attitude.
• Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the
competitors.
Remember children play rugby for their own
enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
