By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
April showers bring May flowers and many fun events to help residents enjoy the community. A special
Ladies Day event is planned on May 13 and will feature a fashion show and vendors offering free items,
samples and discounts for ticket holders only. LA’s first ‘80s party will be held on May 20 … it is sure to
be totally rad! Tickets can be purchased for both of these events at the Clubhouse Activities Desk.
May is also a time to recognize Military Personnel and Veterans on Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.
Lake Ashton is fortunate to have an impressive Veterans Memorial that is used for special ceremonies
including the Memorial Day program on May 30. See page 23 for more information on the special events
hosted by the Lake Ashton Veterans Association for all Lake Ashton Veterans.
A budget workshop was held April 4 where Supervisors considered maintenance agreements, potential
capital projects and the operating budget for fiscal year 2023 (October 1, 2022 - September 30, 2023).
The Board had a regular board meeting on April 18 to discuss the budget further, including naming the
capital projects for fiscal year 2023. The Board also approved of a project to enclose the Activities Desk
area in the Ballroom, creating additional office and storage space. Once complete residents will be able
to enter the main entrance to the Clubhouse and receive immediate assistance from the Activities Desk.
The installation of a new 4K projector and the raising of seats in the Cinema was approved to improve
the movie-going experience for residents. A wrap-up of additional actions and staff reports that were
presented was sent via email blast on April 23. Please
visit lakeashtoncdd.com for the full minutes of the
meeting, once approved, in addition to the full
agenda packet for this meeting.
This year, three LA (LW) CDD Supervisor seats are
up for election on November 8. The General
Election qualifying period runs from noon on June
13 until noon on June 17. For more
information please contact the Polk County
Supervisor of Election (polkelections.com).

Canada, as Spring is officially here. The LA II CDD Board of Supervisors, staff and volunteers wish all
residents safe travels, whether you’ll be going on short trips or visits further away from Lake Ashton. This
is also the time of year when we begin our planning for events, shows and parties here at the HFC for
the next 12 months. Our staff wants to provide opportunities that are representative of what our
residents really want, not just what staff may think our residents want. If you’ve heard a great area
entertainer/group in person or would like a specific themed party to be at the HFC, please let staff know
your wishes. This can be done in person, but there will also be a suggestion box in the Activities Desk
area for that purpose. Contact information on potential entertainment is always helpful. To add to the
request, there will be complimentary tickets and a gift prize awarded if you are the first to suggest
entertainment which works into the schedule.
Maintenance has been busy painting in April. The black wrought iron fencing along Hwy. 653 is being
repainted at the time of this writing, so it should be completed soon after this edition is published.
Many, many hours of labor are involved in getting this huge project done and our Maintenance staff of
James and Karen have done a great job. Our thanks to them both!
Commercial Fitness will be getting a quote to the Board for the May 20th meeting regarding possible
replacement of some of the equipment pieces in the Fitness Center at the HFC. Discussion by the LA II
CDD Board on this and other important topics will occur at that time. This meeting begins at 9 AM in
the Community Center as well as on Zoom.

HOMELESS GRADUATING
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
By Doris Reisinger
GENEROSITY is the act of sharing with others
without any expectation of something back in
return. This describes Lake Ashton residents.
Again this year you shared your blessings with
these homeless teens. Their bright future, though
difficult, will be helped by your generosity.
Shufflin' Squares again donated enough for six
duffle bags. One resident donated enough for the
lap tops. Hector with Powur, a vendor at Monday
Coffee, donated enough cash for two duffle bags
and contents. More residents donated in all
amounts this year. The wishes expressed on the
banner reflect the love in Lake Ashton. Their party
was held on April 19 with the banner hung
showing that the community cares. Total
donations were $9,165 plus two boxes of
domestic items! Thank you to the Activities staff
who handled collecting the donations.
OPEN BOCCE PLAY
Wednesdays are now designated as an open play
day on the Bocce Courts at the Clubhouse. Stop
by and play anytime between 6 am and 10 pm
(there are lights on the Bocce Courts). Please be
mindful of the rules posted on the light poles to
ensure the courts remain in great shape. The
storage container closest to the Pool is open and
available for everyone to use.

The Black-necked Stilt is a large,
flashy shorebird that graces Lake Ashton with
its presence in Spring and early Summer when
they arrive to nest. The shallow nest is usually
along the shore. Stilts favor the retention
ponds on the West Course. This gregarious
black and white shorebird has bubblegum pink
legs and flies with them fully extended and will
make much noise if the nest or young are too
closely approached. The male and female are
nearly identical, but the female is actually a
very dark brown on the back. It's a real treat to
see them gather the young under their breasts.
This is one shorebird that not only will perform
a broken-wing act to lure predators away, but
can also put on an unequaled broken-leg act.
Using the golf cart as a blind is one of the best
ways to observe them without disturbing them.
Alligators play a valuable role in the ecology of our
state’s wetlands. Alligators are predators and help
keep other aquatic animal populations in balance.
Generally, alligators less than four feet in length are not
large enough to be dangerous unless handled.
However, if you encounter any alligator that you
believe poses a threat to people, pets or property, call
the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWCGATOR
(866-392-4286). Nuisance alligators are killed, not
relocated. Visit MyFWC.com/Gators for more
information. Be aware of the possibility of alligators
when you are in or near fresh or brackish water. Bites
may occur when people do not pay close enough
attention to their surroundings near water.
• Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
• Dogs and cats are similar in size to the natural prey
of alligators. Don’t allow pets to swim, exercise or
drink in or near waters that may contain alligators.
Dogs often attract an alligator’s interest.
• Leave alligators alone. State law prohibits killing,
harassing or possessing alligators. Handling even
small alligators can result in injury.
• Never feed alligators – it’s dangerous and illegal.
When fed, alligators can overcome their natural
wariness and learn to associate people with food.
When this happens, some of these alligators have to be removed and killed.
• Dispose of fish scraps in garbage cans at boat ramps and fish camps. Do not throw them into the water.
Although you are not intentionally feeding alligators when you do this, the result can be the same.
• Observe and photograph alligators only from a distance. Remember, they’re an important part of
Florida’s natural history as well as an integral component of aquatic ecosystems

LA ( LW) HOA CORNER

In the United States May is known as
Military Appreciation Month. See
page 23 for more information. The
HOA thanks and appreciates all veterans and
those currently serving in the US military
services. Purchase your bows from LAVA Auxiliary,
raise your US and US military flags and show how
patriotic and supportive the community is. All of
course stay within the guidelines of ARC (two
weeks before and two days after).
It is also hard to believe that the summer is quickly
approaching. The HOA wants to remind all
residents that whether you are physically here,
traveling or a snowbird, each of us are responsible
for the care and upkeep of our homes in Lake
Ashton. If you are not sure what that means,
contact ARC, look at LA governing documents
(CCRs), and/or review the ARC Guidelines. We all
love the beauty and tranquility of Lake Ashton, it
is each homeowners responsibility to keep Lake
Ashton the best 55+ community in Florida. The
Lake Wales HOA will continue to enforce the
Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (Section
5.21) and Architectural Rules.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
As Lake Ashton continues to grow, traffic issues
become more frequent and bothersome. The roads
within our community are built to accommodate
two lanes of traffic. On any given day there are cars
parked in the road, as well as service provider
vehicles. These factors cause choke points on the
street, the most dangerous of which is when a
vehicle or vehicles are parked on a curve.
All vehicles, including
golf carts, must obey
all stop signs and the
20 mph speed limit
throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, watch
for pedestrians at all
times. Obeying posted
speed limit and traffic
signs can help avert a
potential tragedy.
Obviously, our vision of oncoming traffic and
pedestrians is obstructed. The car in the unobstructed lane has the right of way over the vehicle in the
lane which is blocked. However, common sense should prevail. Just because you have the right of way
doesn’t mean the approaching vehicle will give it to you. Any accident between a car and a golf cart can
result in dire consequences, even if you are obeying the speed limit. Driving rights of way should be
given not taken. Drive safely and enjoy retirement!

Donna Lund is originally from Ferndale,

raising her family. She applied this knowledge to
assist many individuals, including Alzheimer
Patients, Abused Women and Children. The family
was extremely proud of her for completing her
degree Magna Cum Laude!
After 21 years in Chicago, Donna and Randy
decided to move to Hot Springs Village in
Arkansas for retirement. While visiting their son in
Florida, they came across Lake Ashton. They were
immediately drawn to its beauty and of course, the
golf. They moved in this past December and
although they are snowbirds they are so in love
with Lake Ashton that they may stay full
time. Donna began playing golf in 1993 at the
Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, IL, and
plays at the Diamante Country Club in Arkansas
where she was honored as the most improved
player. She has found the “People” of Lake Ashton
welcoming, especially members of the LALGA,
and our wonderful golf staff, Matt, Trent and
Christian. In addition, Donna enjoys meeting new
friends, playing mahjong, traveling, cooking and
decorating. The LALGA is extremely happy that
Donna moved to Lake Ashton and became a
member of the league.
LA NINERS
By Marti Schmidt
Another winter golfing season came to a close in
April, with 60 Niners playing the final round and
then attending a luncheon. Wow, that’s a lot of
gals! A big THANKS goes out to outgoing
President Mary Lopez and Secretary Diane Struble
for their hard work and dedication to the club
28
(insert a big round of applause here). Now, please
welcome your new Board: President Karen
Ferrande, Vice President Janet Mutz, Treasurer
MaryLou Jameson, and Secretary Marti Schmidt
PLEASE NOTE: In May, game start time will be 9
am. Thinking about joining the Niners? Please do!
This is a fun group of ladies who enjoy playing 9holes
of golf and the camaraderie that comes with
it. Are you a beginner? Just learning to play golf?
This secretary personally started playing golf here
at Lake Ashton three years ago (as a part-time
snowbird), and everyone was so welcoming and
helpful. Whether you’ve played golf since your
teens, or are a new player, you are invited to come
see what you’re missing: fun, friendship and 9holes
of golf. Come on, you know you want to!
Sign-up sheets are in the Pro Shop Ladies restroom
entrance, along with other information about the
Niners and additional groups that play throughout
the week. Still have questions? Contact Janet at

CREATIVE QUILTERS
By Marsha Martin
The latest quilt made by the Creative Quilters is up on
the wall outside the media room in the Clubhouse.
Each quilter was given a piece of matching fabric and
then made whatever block they chose to put into the
quilt. The result is a beautiful quilt for everyone
visiting the Clubhouse to see! The quilters have
already started making blocks for a patriotic quilt to
go up next. Up north friends are starting to head
home for the summer so numbers are getting smaller,
but there are still lots of fun quilting projects planned
for those that are here. Every third Tuesday is Project
Day starting at 12:30. Quilters of all abilities are
welcome, so come and join in! For more information
call Marsha Martin at 406-788-8087.

~LA GARDEN CLUB
By Lynn Davis
The Lake Ashton Garden Club held its first National
Gardening Day on April 14 in the Pavilion. Gene, the
Barefoot Gardener, spoke about the care and useful
use of Native Florida plants, succulents and a wide
variety of both outdoor and indoor plants. Many of
the plants showcased were natural pollinators for
both bees and butterflies. After his presentation a
silent auction was held. Both the presentation and
auction were a huge success! Proceeds will be used
towards the purchase of plants around the perimeter
of the Pavilion and future speakers at meetings. Thank
you to all who participated and made generous
contributions to the club. This was a wonderful
opportunity to get usually twenty dollar plants for $3
or less. Members of the club donated plants, books,
containers and much more! The club hopes to have
another silent auction in the future. The club meets
every second Wednesday of the month at 10 am in
the Pavilion. The group hopes to begin planting
around the Pavilion by early May. Please consider
joining in on the fun.

LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
Hard to believe that the season is just about
coming to an end and that snow birds will soon be
leaving. LA Rockers have been meeting in the HFC
ballroom on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4
pm. The group has learned decoupage, foiling,
and how to make blended backgrounds as well as
had a demonstration on how to pour rocks. All this
while enjoying a lovely afternoon with other LA
Rockers. In addition, the group painted and
delivered rocks to a local nursing home, worked
on weekly challenges, and continued painting
welcome rocks and kindness rocks for the
community. Spend an afternoon with a great
group of people and learn how to paint rocks!
Don't worry if you can't draw or paint - all of your
efforts are guaranteed to bring a smile to
someone's face.

MAGIC YEARS CLUB
By Annie Lutz
At the most recent meeting the group came to a
consensus to suspend the Magic Years Group here
at Lake Ashton. Disney has made it almost
impossible to schedule any type of group
activities, and because there has been a very
significant decline in meeting attendance, the
members felt this was the right decision at this
time. If, in the future, members want to resume
activities, and someone is willing to take on the
leadership position, then the group can resume.
LA REPUBLICANS
By Brenda Bush-Sayre
The Lake Ashton Republican Club will meet on
May 25 at the Clubhouse. Social time will start at
3:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 4. There will
be a school board forum and five candidates will
participate in a Q&A session. All Lake Ashton
residents are welcome to join. Contact is Brenda
Bush-Sayre, bbs1954@icloud.com, 813-313-9911.
LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
Have you seen the outstanding beautification
project the LA Garden Club has started in the
indoor pool area? It truly has made a difference in
the appearance. Can’t wait to see the finished
project! Donations are still needed. If you want to
help, please give your donation to a Garden Club
or Swim Club member in a sealed envelope.
The most active swimmer on the LASC's 100-mile
Challenge Swim is almost in Ft. Lauderdale (on
paper). He plans to continue on to Key West. Just
before those goals, he had swum to Daytona
Beach & back. WOW! What a great inspiration.
The challenge record sheet is on the club's bulletin
board in the locker room hallway, as is other club
info. All lap swimmers are welcome and
encouraged to participate. (continued on p. 34)

Special thanks to all who shared
delicious food! The most exciting news is that Cathy Liska & Sharon Swanson have qualified for and will
participate in the National Senior Games in May. They are the first Lake Ashton swimmers to swim in
this event. Everyone is very proud of them and wish them fast times and a lot of fun meeting people
from all over the USA.
The club continues to hold three group workouts each week — Mondays at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1:45
pm, and Saturdays at 10 am. The workouts are a fun, social way to improve fitness and swim skills. The
only pre-requisite is that you must be able to swim one length of the pool. If you wish to aim for Senior
Games, you will be supported in that endeavor.

LIVING WELL
At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt
to help maintain or even potentially improve our
health. These habits may also help to keep our
brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the
onset of cognitive decline.
To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s
Association is offering a program on May 5 at 10
am in the Clubhouse Ballroom entitled Healthy
Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest
Research. This workshop covers
four areas of
lifestyle habits associated with healthy aging:
• Cognitive activity
• Physical health and exercise
• Diet and nutrition
• Social engagement

AMERICAN S IGN LANGUAGE
CLASSES
Growing older can come with different degrees of
hearing loss, and it is important for your brains to
remain active no matter the effects of aging.
Learning American Sign Language (ASL) can help
with both! If you are not aware of the ASL classes
held at Lake Ashton, why don’t you come check the
group out? Classes are held Tuesday afternoons at 2
pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom. The group has been
meeting every week since last spring and have
learned so much thanks to the wonderful instructors
James, and Helen. Furthermore, beginning
September 6, there will be a beginning class of ASL
in the Clubhouse Ballroom at 1 pm. Sign up by
emailing ShelleyKnee@gmail.com. This class will
start with simply learning the alphabet and numbers
along with common words and easy phrases. This
will be geared to the beginner who has no
experience. Some fun games will be planned to
learn by experience and communication with other
deaf and hearing impaired neighbors. It’s best if you
attend with a partner so you learn together and can
communicate with each other and practice on your
own. If you have experience, you’re invited to
attend the advanced class in the Ballroom at 2
pm every Tuesday. May 10 is the last class
before the summer break, resuming September 6.
