Our Book and Video Drops will remain open.
Welcome to the first edition of the
Library’s revised newsletter format. We
hope you like the changes we made
to provide more information, improve
readability, and include program
calendars for the next four months.
Please take a moment to respond to a survey about how the
Library would best serve your needs. Access to the survey
is available on the next page or via the website. Print copies
will be provided upon request. We would
appreciate your feedback.
We are delighted to share several important
enhancements to the Library’s website
and CLEVNET catalog. Our website
now hosts software that provides better
accessibility for people who would benefit from visual and audio
enhancement. When visiting the website (www.sanduskylib.
org), click on the link in the lower right corner to enable ReciteMe
and explore its features. The catalog has been upgraded by
CLEVNET for customization by each member library and
individual cardholders. If you need assistance navigating the
new catalog, please stop in or call to book a librarian.

New resources will be available in 2025. For families, we added
the database Scholastic Teachables, which provides activity
sheets for parents and teachers to supplement learning, and
the online platform ABCmouse. For adult learners, we added
the online resources Peterson’s Test and Career Prep and
Udemy, which replaces LinkedIn Learning. The print magazine
collection will include 32 new titles. Magazines have been
relocated to the lower level to make room for the expanded
collection and are now attractively displayed in visible cases
thanks to a generous donor.
We are pleased to once again host
a free tax preparation service on
site for low-to-moderate-income
individuals, seniors, and those with
disabilities provided by VITA/TCE
with volunteers from United Way. For more information and to
schedule contact the United Way at 419-625-4672.
We invite you to explore what’s new and look forward to seeing
you this winter!

what you think!
Sandusky Library’s mission is to give all people
opportunities to enrich their lives. We value a
commitment to providing equality of access and
service for all people and a service model that is
welcoming and flexible to meet the changing needs of
our community.
Our Winter Reading Challenge is all
about having fun!
Stop by the Youth Services or Readers'
Advisory Desks beginning January 15, 2025
to register for the challenge and pick up
a Bookopoly gameboard.
Each space on the gameboard will have
an activity to complete. Keep track of your
progress either on your gameboard or
online through the
Sandusky Library Beanstack page

of each activity that you finish.
Stop in throughout the challenge to show
us your gameboard or online progress.
Prize tickets will be handed out for each
monopoly created or special space
completed in your challenge for a chance to
win a prize after our challenge ends
on March 15, 2025.
We live in a time when a library means much more than
a collection of books. Our building provides meeting
spaces for organizations, access to the internet, and
a safe space for our community’s youth. Our staff
provides a welcoming environment through programs
that enrich, guidance for new and experienced parents,
assistance with research and technology, and most
importantly connection.
We believe that all community members have a place
at Sandusky Library. We encourage you to participate
in a brief survey to help us better understand how
we are engaging with the community we serve and
what we can do to connect with you in a way that is
meaningful.
Please use the QR code or visit our website at
sanduskylib.org/survey to tell us what you think.

Beanstack Reading Challenge
February 1 - 28
Jacqueline Woodson, one of the great writers of our
generation, challenges us to use her reading list as a way
to look forward and back. The books she has chosen are
all by Black authors, telling their brilliant and varied stories
of the American diaspora. Log your reading to earn virtual
badges throughout the challenge.
Women’s History Month 2025

Black Out Poetry: A Kwame Alexander
Beanstack Reading Challenge
April 1 - 30
Beloved author and poet Kwame Alexander challenges us
to read and create! If you have read his book, "Booked,"
then you know about a very funny scene with a "blackout"
poem. For this challenge, begin a new book and stop
reading at a random page. From there, copy down the text
on the page. Then, begin crossing out letters and/or words
until you make your own new creation, a blackout poem.
Create yours and share it with Kwame on social media!
Outreach visits are a vital
service that is offered by
Sandusky Library. This allows
our staff to go offsite and
visit patrons that aren't able
to come to the Library. We
promote Library programs
and services, provide
resources for educators and
families, deliver early literacy
programs, and more! Our Youth Services Staff make
numerous outreach visits throughout the year. We enjoy
visiting preschools and childcare centers for storytimes,
attending Family Literacy Nights, Open Houses, and
Parent Teacher Conferences
for schools, and providing
school age programs at our
community partner sites for
children during the Summer.
We also offer outreach visits
from the Museum Services
Manager of the Follett House
with a focus on local history
topics and historical artifacts
to our local schools. In 2024, our staff made 160 outreach
visits throughout our community. For more information
about Children's Outreach, contact the Youth Services
Department at 419-625-3835.

Decodable books allow young children to sound out and decode words and
are a great first step to building a confident reader. Phonics based, these
books guide the reader to use phonemic awareness to build their reading
abilities as they advance from level to level. Children are encouraged to
sound out the words included in the simple text of each book.
Decodable books coordinate with the Science of Reading, a science-based
approach on how individuals learn and develop the ability to read. The 20242025
academic school year is the first year that the Science of Reading has
been required in all Ohio schools. Our new Decodable Book collection allows
students to use decodable books that align with what they are using in school
and practice skills with parents and caregivers at home.
You are your

Starting at birth, do these
5 simple things every day

Sandusky Library is happy to be celebrating our 10th
Anniversary in 2025 of being a certified Family Place
Library. We are one of only 4 library systems in the
State of Ohio with this certification.
Family Place Libraries offer programming and
support for families with young children. We strive to
connect families in our community with the tools and
resources that they need to promote early literacy
and early childhood development. To become certified, Sandusky Library had
to meet each of the core components that Family Place promotes and we have
recertified each year after our initial induction. These core components include:
• A specially designed welcoming space for families with young children
that is open and available whenever the library is open. Our Dive into
Reading Early Literacy Center is open and ready for Children to play in
throughout the year and features an ever changing dramatic play area
and interactives.
• Our Play. Learn. Grow. program features developmentally/ageappropriate
toys for children ages 0-3 to play with along with their
parents and caregivers. Information is available from our community
partners at each session and there are opportunities to ask questions
and interact with staff members from their organizations.
• We offer a wide variety of materials including a collection of Toys (our
Toybrary) for our patrons to check out and take home. We also have a
Family Place Collection of Books and Videos available for check out in
the Youth Services Department that features books on childcare and
development and also picture books that help to explain tough topics,
such as divorce, illness, death, etc… to children.
• Our staff goes on many outreach visits each month to bring early literacy
activities to children who may not be able to come in person.
• We host additional programs for families all year long!
• We have two members of our Staff who have attended the Family Place
Training Institute and are Family Place Certified Librarians.
