LEVELS
WHEN YOU COME TO JOIN A COURSE
AT CNWL, WE WILL ENSURE THAT YOU
ARE PUT ONTO THE LEVEL OF COURSE
MOST SUITABLE FOR YOU. THE COURSE
LEVEL WILL ENABLE YOU TO DEVELOP
AND BUILD YOUR SKILLS, WHILE ALSO
GIVING YOU THE BEST OPPORTUNITY
TO SUCCEED, PASS AND PROGRESS.
Most subject areas at CNWL range from ‘entry’
level (basic skills) through to Level 3 (A Level
equivalent). The level you start on depends on
your existing skills and qualifications.
To decide what level you will start on, we will:
• Consider what course you want to do and
what experience you have in that subject
• Look at your existing qualifications (e.g.
GCSEs) especially English and maths
• In some cases, you will do an ‘initial
assessment’ - this is not an exam, but
a way of seeing the best level for you
to start your studies at.
Many of our students start with us at
Level 3, while many more progress through
a range of levels to reach their ambitions.
CNWL also teaches a range of Higher Education
(HE) courses. To find out more, ask us, look
out for Level 4 or 5 courses under www.cnwl.

OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
Construction and Built Environment student
Jamie Ashman is an Apprentice with Laing
O’Rourke. With support from his college
tutor and his employer, Jamie successfully
applied for a ‘Quest’ scholarship and now
receives a £1500 bursary to help him
develop his career. “As well as sorting out
my Level 4 education, this scholarship will
help me fulfil a professional ambition to visit
the Oresund Bridge in Sweden. The bridge
is the longest combined road and rail bridge
in Europe and is an inspiring example of
transport engineering.”
As an apprentice, Jamie is at the beginning
of his career but he is already working on
exciting projects including ticket halls and
tunnelling on the Crossrail project.
JAMIE
ASHMAN
“What we learn in the classroom helps
with work and I have been given big
responsibilities such as setting out, which
means translating what is shown on plans
onto the actual site and using the latest
construction technology.”
Tutor Tom Jones said: “The ICE scholarship
is a great achievement for Jamie as only
four such awards are made in the southeast
region every year. We are very proud
of him and look forward to seeing him
succeed in his career and education.”
Jamie becomes the seventh CNWL student
to be awarded an ICE scholarship over the
past few years.

APPRENTICESHIPS
AN APPRENTICESHIP IS A TRAINING
PROGRAMME FOR PEOPLE IN
EMPLOYMENT.
We work with around 1000 apprentices
from several hundred employers every year.
Many students progress from full-time
qualifications at CNWL into apprenticeship
roles once they have the skills and
qualifications to get onto the career ladder.
We currently run apprenticeship training
programmes in over 20 professions including
Business Administration, Care, Construction,
Civil Engineering, Electrical Installation and
Salon Services.
We are one of only two colleges training
Building Services and Civil Engineering
apprentices for the prestigious Technician
Apprenticeship Consortium.
One of our apprentices was named 19+
Apprentice of the Year at the 2017 BTEC
Awards. CNWL apprentices also won
‘Heating and Ventilation Apprentice of the
Year’ and a British Education Award (BEA)
in 2017. A total of seven of our apprentices
have been awarded prestigious ‘Quest
Technician’ scholarships from The Institution
of Civil Engineering in the past 3 years.
