E-NEWS ON THE CUTTING EDGE
VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2
It is hard to believe that it is already February. It is even harder to believe that the Lenten
Season begins on February 14, Ash Wednesday. I want to invite you to join us at 6pm on Ash
Wednesday as we observe the beginning of Lent with the imposition of Ashes. Lent has historically
been a time of solemn reflection for the Church.
It is a time for the individuals to reflect on their
relationship with God and look for areas for growth. Often people will give something up for Lent such
as caffeine, chocolate, meat, or even television. In a way, they are fasting.
This year I want to encourage you to do more than just give up something for Lent. In addition,
I encourage you to replace what you have given up with a time of prayer, study, or devotion. Use the
extra time to grow in your relationship with God. You could even replace what you’ve given up with an
outreach project that will share the love of Jesus with others. By adding time with God through study
or service, it will enable you to grow and mature in your walk with the Lord.
In Christ’s love,
Daniel

Our denomination is facing uncertain times as we struggle through debates over human sexuality – essentially
how and whether we are going to include LGBTQ persons in ministry and the life of the church and how and
whether we might maintain unity in the face of such diverse options, preferences, and practices.
The task of navigating us through this time has been taken up by our Council of Bishops(CoB) and a specially
appointed Commission on a Way Forward. While the Commission continues their work, the CoB has asked annual
conferences to foster “listening sessions” for preliminary feedback on the proposed way forward (currently
summarized in 3 loose “sketches”.)
The NM Conference has scheduled four listening sessions throughout the Conference:
February 18th – Western Hills UMC-El Paso at 3 pm
March 4th – FUMC-Odessa at 3 pm
March 18th – FUMC-Clovis at 3 pm
April 22nd – Central UMC-ABQ at 3 pm
The objective will be to share information about the process, learn more about the “sketches”
discuss together and with our delegates where our values, hopes, and fears lie as a Conference.
For more information, please visit the NM Conference Website:

Good afternoon ROC friends and family,
Jesus said, "Who do you say that I am?"
Sometimes we doubt in who Jesus is. Even Thomas, a man who had walked and talked with
Jesus for 3 years did not believe that Jesus was alive after his death. He was told by his
closest friends that Jesus was alive. Thomas said, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his
hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe."
Jesus appeared to Thomas fully alive after his death, and Thomas said to Jesus, "My
Lord and My God." Wow!
Our doubts don't change the truth about Jesus. Our doubts don't change the resurrection of
Jesus. Remember that Jesus is alive and he is for us all, My Lord and My God.
