For many years, the museum has recognized Colorado and Colorado Springs’ founding dates with a community celebration. This year, CSPM marked Colorado’s 141st birthday with an outdoor festival featuring music, games, food and crafts. Guests also had the opportunity to come inside and learn more about the history of the Pikes Peak region through museum tours, Hands on History stations, touch tables and exhibits. Outside, there were a variety of activities for all ages. Bluegrass band Wirewood Station played a two hour set while guests danced and sang along. Wishing Star Farm brought along farm animals for guests to meet and even play with inside the pen! Children enjoyed face painting, playing historic games and making Colorado party hats. Learning at one of Colorado Grown’s touch tables Several community partners provided hands on experience booths, including Garden of the Gods, AdAmAn Club, the Pikes Peak Weavers Guild and Olympic City USA. Guests even had the chance to meet Stephen Garbett, an Olympic skeleton hopeful! There were plenty of food and beverage options for guests to enjoy. At the “Soda Garten,” local breweries offered craft soda samples. Visitors also enjoyed unique menu items from some of Colorado Springs’ favorite food trucks. No birthday celebration is complete without birthday cake! After National Miss Colorado Teen Cynthia Morin led the crowd in singing “Happy Birthday!” to Colorado, CSPM passed out more than 300 slices of birthday cake to eager guests. CSPM’s SOU project team has made numerous changes and improvements to the SOU digital interface since opening the exhibit in January. Based on user feedback and observations from staff and volunteers, the museum has improved the visitor experience by increasing the visibility and “click-ability” of SOU theme buttons, streamlined the photograph-advance feature and reformatted the opacity function for the historic maps application. Let the museum staff know what you think of the changes, as program refinements will continue based on your feedback. And, did you know that you can connect with the Story of Us from your home and school computer, tablet or smartphone anytime and anywhere?
