On that morning, the United States was struck by a coordinated terrorist attack that claimed thousands of innocent lives and left an enduring wound on the world’s conscience. The World Trade Center in New York became a symbol of both the terrible consequences of hatred and the extraordinary courage of ordinary people. The attacks were not simply an assault on buildings. They were an assault on human life, security, and the belief that people should be able to live without fear. Among those who died were office workers, firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, passengers, and people from many different countries and backgrounds. Each person had a family, friends, hopes, and a future that was suddenly taken away. Yet, amid the devastation, September 11 also revealed remarkable acts of courage and compassion. Firefighters and police officers entered the burning towers while others fled to safety. Emergency workers continued their efforts despite overwhelming danger. Strangers helped one another through streets filled with confusion and grief. These acts remind us that even during moments of profound darkness, humanity can respond with courage, solidarity, and compassion. The passage of time must never turn tragedy into a mere historical statistic. The lives lost on September 11 deserve to be remembered individually and collectively. Their memory should encourage us to reject hatred and violence and to value the dignity of every human life. Remembering September 11 does not mean remaining trapped in grief. The assault and threats took place in October 2025 outside of Malden District Court, which is located at 4040 Mystic Valley Pkwy. in Medford. Bethany Abigail Terrill, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of influencing, impeding or retaliating against a federal official by simple assault in U.S. District Court in Boston. U.S. Senior District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV scheduled sentencing for Dec. 16, 2026. Terrill was arrested and charged by criminal complaint in October 2025 and later indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2026. The charge of influencing, impeding or retaliating against a federal official by simple assault provides for a sentence of up to one year in prison, one year of supervised release and a fine of $100,000. According to the charging documents, federal agents were supporting Immigration Enforcement and Removal Operations in effecting the administrative immigration arrest of individuals in Malden. The agents encountered Terrill outside of Malden District Court for reasons unrelated to the agents’ activities. Terrill physically interjected herself into the middle of agents while they were effecting an arrest. Terrill was verbally abusive, attempted to physically interfere with the arrest and ultimately made threatening statements to kill the federal officers on the scene. Specifically, Terrill approached the agents, screaming at and pushing through them to capture a video recording on her mobile phone. Terrill screamed, “ICE is here, ICE is here” and “You guys are monsters, this is insane.” She continued, “Sir, what’s your name? What’s your name?” As she continuously pushed into agents, all while filming them, she added, “I can try to help you” and “I am an American civilian; I have a right to be here.” Agents, who were identifiable by their badges, agency placards and clothing, told Terrill to “back up” several times. Terrill repeatedly attempted to push past the agents and did not comply with any commands. We can only hope T oday, the city of Malden has more residents — close to or over 70,000 — than it has ever had in its nearly four centuries of existence. Malden also now has on its rolls the most registered voters in municipal history as well — 38,625 in all — close to half of its total population. It may have gone unnoticed in the recent September 1 State Primary Election, but voter turnout in that election was the highest for a state primary in the city of Malden in OVER 20 YEARS, dating back to the early 2000s. Want more numbers? How about the fact that voter turnout September 1 also topped every municipal primary election dating back to the early 2000s? The September 1 State Primary turnout even very nearly equaled the final Malden municipal election of 2021, which included another contested mayoral vote. (Advocate Photo) this past March 31 Special Election, the pivotal Proposition 2 1/2 Override Election, where this city’s voters chose not to back the tax increase. Maybe it was just a crest of a voter wave, destined to roll back softly in the other direction the next time an election is held. Maybe it was just a blip on the proverbial voter radar, an inexplicable anomaly. Or, how about just giving our city’s voters a round of applause for coming to the polls in greater numbers than usual? We will even settle for the dialed back golf clap on this one. But at least acknowledge it, since, as we all know, numbers don’t lie. Malden’s state primary voter turnout was certainly not eye-opening or mind boggling. But it was more than the others mentioned above! All told, some 7,950 voters cast ballots on September 1 in Malden’s 2026 State Primary Election. That represents 20.5% of this city’s 38,625 registered voters, a historical high for city rolls, as we already stated. In the landmark Prop. 2 1/2 override Special Election last March, just 15% voted. No more than 17% of registered voters in Malden voted in the 2024, 2022, 2020, 2018, 2014, 2012, 2010 and 2008 State Primary Elections in Malden. In the last final Municipal Election in Malden in 2025, just 15% of voters marked ballots. A 35% rise in voter turnout from both the Prop. 2 1/2 Special Election and that city election alone — from 15% to 20.5% — is a 35% rise, no questions asked. (Advocate Photos) black clouds of acrid smoke poured from the fire for about an hour Monday morning while Malden firefighters battled the blaze, working to keep it from spreading amidst the dense fit of trailer residences. The fire started just before 10 a.m. at Town Line Estates, which is at 685 Broadway, behind the Town Line Luxury Lanes bowling/Mixx entertainment complex. The flames started in one home and spread to an adjacent residence. The trailer home where the fire started is a total loss but the home next door was saved with minor fire damage. There, at the second trailer home, a husband and wife were able to get out safely as well. According to reports, the woman who was able to escape the fire in the unit that was destroyed told firefighters that she “heard a bang” before smoke and flames filled the rooms in her home. “The whole sky was black, smoke was really pouring out there,” neighbor James Hogan told a reporter at the scene, according to an online report. “Then the calvary came, ambulances, the fire department, police— they all got here so quickly. It was great to see.” The trailer home where the fire started is a total loss; there was no official estimate of damage caused by the blaze, though these units are customarily valued from $175,000 to $225,000 in a community like Malden. According to reports, a Malden Malden firefighters worked to break apart parts of the trailer residence unit’s roof to get better access to fight the blaze on Monday. As of Advocate press deadline on Wednesday, the cause of the Sept. 7 fire was still undetermined by the Malden Fire Investigation unit. *** Fire at Devir Street apartment complex in Malden displaces residents on Sept. 2 A kitchen fire spread quickly in an apartment in the Park Place Apartments in Malden on the afternoon of September 2, causing its residents to flee into the street. Malden fire officials said no one was injured as a result of the fire, but four residents of the apartment were displaced as a result. According to Malden fire officials, crews responded to the blaze at 92 Devir St., in the southern end of the Edgeworth neighborhood, shortly after 4:30 p.m., with the fire in the kitchen of an apartment. According to reports, firefighters extinguished the flames using a line and a fire extinguisher, limiting the damage. The cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Advocate press deadline. Serving riders on the Orange Line, Commuter Rail and several key bus routes, Ruggles is one of the most used stations in the network, and the MBTA has spent the last few years making improvements to provide riders with a better travel experience. During this service change, crews will make concrete repairs at platforms, along stair walls and at the Ruggles Street Bridge. The MBTA will also maximize the unencumbered access to the Orange Line track area by accomplishing many other piggybacking projects. This work includes the following: ● As part of the Jackson Square Station Accessibility Improvements project, crews will upgrade the station platform, perform electrical work in the track area, work on the platform ceiling and perform expansion joint repairs in the track area. ● Critical Orange Line signal modernization will continue to take place between Forest Hills and Roxbury Crossing. ● Crews will make repairs to the staircase at the north end of Green Street. ● The MBTA’s Maintenance of Way team will perform spot tamping as needed within the Forest Hills yard facility. Alternate travel options More info on service changes and alternate travel options is below: ● Free and accessible shuttle buses will make stops between Back Bay and Forest Hills. ● Riders are encouraged to consider the Commuter Rail for fare-free service between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay and South Station. The trip between Forest Hills and Back Bay on the Commuter Rail is approximately 10 minutes. ● Riders using shuttle bus service should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling to Downtown Crossing from Forest Hills should budget at least an additional 30 minutes of travel in addition to their regular commute. ● All shuttle buses are accessible to riders with disabilities; however, some buses used during weekday periods will be lift-equipped, coach-style buses. This work cannot be performed during the overnight hours when the MBTA does not operate, and it would be extremely inefficient and costly if planned during single weekend outages. Closing a section of the transit system for multiple days is the most efficient way to perform the MBTA’s routine maintenance, revitalization efforts, inspections and upgrade work, and combines the efforts of multiple contractors and the MBTA workforce around the clock 24/7 to maximize productivity. He’s enrolled in original Medicare. Can you help me? --Caregiving Connie Dear Connie, Taking care of a parent after a stroke is hard enough without having to figure out Medicare too. The good news is that understanding the program can make life a lot easier. Knowing what’s covered – and what isn't – can help you plan ahead, avoid costly surprises and make sure your father gets the care he needs. Here’s a practical guide to get you started. Medicare basics One of the best places to start is the official “Medicare & You” handbook. It explains benefits and services in plain language. Medicare mails an updated copy every fall, but you can also view it online at medicare.gov/medicare-and-you. For questions, call Medicare at 800-633-4227 to speak with a representative. They can clarify coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, home health care, and more. Your state’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is another great resource. SHIP counselors provide free, one-on-one counseling to help you understand your coverage, identify cost-saving programs, and answer questions about Medicare. Find a counselor near you at shiphelp.org or 877-839-2675. Caregivers should also create a secure Medicare account at medicare. gov/account/login. Once your father’s account is set up, you can review his coverage, track claims, check the status of medical services and prescriptions, and see which preventive benefits he’s eligible for. It’s an easy way to stay organized and keep all of your father’s Medicare information in one place. Choosing providers Medicare also lets you compare providers online at medicare.gov/ care-compare. You can search for doctors, hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, hospice providers, and medical equipment suppliers in your area. This is especially useful after a stroke, when your father may need rehabilitation or specialized care at home. Covered services Original Medicare covers many services your father may need, including hospital care, doctor visits, lab tests, and outpatient treatments. It also covers home health care if your father is homebound, under a doctor’s care, and needs part-time skilled nursing or rehabilitation therapy, such as physical, occupational or speech therapy. Medicare also covers medically necessary durable medical equipment and supplies prescribed by a doctor, including oxygen, wheelchairs, walkers and catheters. Shortterm skilled nursing care in a facility may also be covered for up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay. Prescription medications are generally covered through a separate Medicare Part D plan, which helps pay for many outpatient drugs your father may need. Hospice care is covered for patients with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less, as certified by a doctor. It includes nursing care, medications for comfort and short-term respite care to give caregivers a break. However, Medicare generally doesn’t pay for long-term custodial care at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. That means it generally won’t cover ongoing help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom or supervision for someone with dementia. Routine dental care, dentures, eye exams for glasses and hearing aids are also not covered. Cost help If your father has limited income and resources, check programs that help reduce Medicare costs. Extra Help assists with prescription drug expenses, and Medicare Savings Programs can help pay premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. The win started the season right for Malden (1-0-0), which was right back in action yesterday, September 10, in its Greater Boston League (GBL) opener versus Lynn English. The Trustee would be required to submit an invoice. No court of law would allow a Trustee to drain the principal of the Trust in order to pay himself or herself unreasonable Trustee compensation. Since the Settlor/Trustee M assHealth has in the past made the argument that if the Settlor of an irrevocable Trust, who is also serving as Trustee, has the right, pursuant to the terms of the Trust, to receive compensation, that this somehow results in the Settlor having the right to receive principal distributions thereby rendering all of the assets housed in the irrevocable Trust a “countable” resource for MassHealth eligibility purposes. I suppose even if one of the children of the Settlor were to serve as Trustee, MassHealth could try to argue that the child’s compensation could include principal and the Settlor could ask the child to hand over principal to the Settlor. If the child does not, the Settlor could remove and replace the child Trustee with someone else that would be more cooperative. So, the power to replace and remove the Trustee virtually for any reason arguably provides the Settlor with as much power over the Trust as if he or she were serving as Trustee. Pursuant to well-settled Trust law, the Trustee of a Trust is only entitled to fair and reasonable compensawould now be in a nursing home, how could he or she, as Trustee, render services to the Trust in order to be entitled to compensation in the first place? Trustee compensation would result in taxable earned income and would fall under 130 CMR 520.009(c), a Massachusetts regulation that essentially states that such compensation for services rendered to the Trust is not equivalent to the Settlor/Trustee being “benefitted” from the Trust as a beneficiary is so benefitted. The Trustee earned the income as a result of services rendered, which is a far cry from receiving income or principal merely because of the fact that he or she might also be a beneficiary of the Trust. As an example, if the Settlor/Trustee happened to be a carpenter and performed carpentry services related to real estate held in the Trust, and invoiced the Trust for such services, wouldn’t that represent payment for services rendered and not a distribution of principal from the Trust? It would represent earned income and would be taxable to the Settlor/ Trustee. The federal Medicaid law is clear in stating that state Trust law is to govern provisions found within Trust documents. The federal government relies on the body of law with respect to Trusts as it has evolved over the past 200 years within each state in the union. There is no Federal law which does not recognize state laws governing Trusts when determining ownership rights, property rights and other legal interests. One way to avoid ever having to defend such a possible attack on the part of MassHealth is to simply limit the Trustee compensation to the income generated by the Trust. In other words, Trustee compensation can only be paid out of income. That being said, by deduction, Trustee compensation cannot be paid from the principal. Therefore, with respect to the Trustee compensation issue, MassHealth cannot argue that the principal of the irrevocable Trust is somehow a countable asset. Pursuant to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court case Fournier, decided in July of 2021, the Trust document must be read as a whole and there can be no circumstances in which the Settlor of the Trust could receive principal distributions. This case forced MassHealth to significantly reduce its attacks on irrevocable Trusts when no sound legal basis under well-settled Trust law for the attacks exists. Joseph D. Born in Somerville on March 31, 1966, and raised in Malden, Linda built her life around music, art, and community. She was best known as the singer and bassist of The Chelsea Curve, carrying the torch for sharp, melodic pop punk and the mod and scooter scene with her unmistakable voice and stage presence.
