We were joined by hundreds of our closest friends—together Letter from the Executive Director with hundreds of new friends--all who witnessed the power of working together to build homes, communities, and hope. Our year together reminds me of a prayer I came across recently: God who gives sight to the blind, give us eyes to see our brothers and sisters clearly. With eyes wide open, help us to know what it means to truly love our brothers and sisters. Amen. The year brought two unique build opportunities with St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and Lincoln Berean Church. Both congregations put God’s call to serve into action by each exclusively sponsoring an entire build project in their parking lots. Church members, Sunday school kids, and bible study groups joined together to raise the funds, build the homes, watch the houses being moved to their final lots, and celebrate the blessings a decent, affordable home provides a family. Beginning in March, we gathered to celebrate the beginning of our organization’s milestone build of its 150th home. It all started with the passion of a handful of community members and faith leaders who 29 years ago saw the need for decent, affordable housing in Lancaster County. Through the determination and labor of thousands of volunteers in wind and cold, heat and sunshine; and support from donors and community organizations and companies, more than 700 individuals have been able to build strength, stability, and selfreliance through affordable shelter in Lincoln and Lancaster County. As we reflected on this milestone build, momentum didn’t stop. As I write this letter we are currently building house number 155. Another big change this year, was the building and moving of our administrative office. We’d outgrown the usable office space at the old office, making it hard to have private conversations with homeowners; the building needed technological updating that would have been very costly; and the warehouse areas were no longer conducive to efficient home building. No funds donated for the purpose of homebuilding were used for the new office build. We sold our previous office building and used those funds for the materials and subcontractors needed to construct our new facility. The lot we built on was donated to Habitat Lincoln, and our construction crew volunteered extra time to build the office. Many of our partners and group volunteers also helped build the office and offered inkind donations. We are excited for the opportunity our new office space provides. It allows us to operate efficiently and effectively as a team. We also see the future possibilities of growing our impact, homeowner education and training, and ultimately serving more families in need of decent shelter. There was no backyard in which to play, unsafe sidewalks to ride bikes and lots of transient people walking by on the streets or loitering in the alleys. The apartment had many cracks in the walls and near the windows causing cold air to leak in and moisture to fill the cracks. The floor took on water whenever it rained. Claudia put plastic wrap under all their furniture to try and protect against water damage. The bathroom had large spots of mold and worsened due to the shower exhaust fan not working properly. Summertime brought ants and bugs into the apartment to the point that no food could be left on counters or in cupboards. Claudia wanted a safe neighborhood for the girls to play, a yard to spend time together and peace of mind knowing they were safe. For Rosie and Karen - they wanted separate rooms so they could play with their friends and have a quiet place to study and read. Both express interest in becoming teachers. And for fun, maybe a basketball hoop! On Saturday, March 11, 2017, Claudia's dreams started to become reality, as we gathered for a ground-breaking ceremony on her future home, our 150th home build. Joined by our closest friends, supporters, construction volunteers, current and former board members, neighbors, and Habitat homeowners. We celebrated this special milestone achievable through thousands of hours of volunteer labor and generous donations. As we gathered on what would become Claudia’s front lawn, attendees rejoiced in the blessings we’ve seen as an organization over the past 29 years with the voices of the Lincoln Continentals, an acapella group, singing praises of thanks. The program was comprised of special guests including Lt. Governor Foley, Mayor Beutler, former executive director Michelle Williamson, then board president Lanny Nissen, and Claudia, Karen and Rosie. Together, shovels turned over dirt, marking the beginning of a future full of opportunity. The lot for Build #150 was sold to Habitat Lincoln by the owners, Lois Watts and her late husband, Darrell. For many years, they used the lot as a large garden; bringing an abundance of life and prosperity in the form of vegetables, fruits, and flowers. No longer able to continue a large garden, Darrell and Lois wanted the land to continue to be a blessing and sold it to us. The land rich in providing an abundance of blessings will continue to bestow riches to Claudia’s family. It was wonderful to have Lois and her family join us for the morning ceremony. The neighbors on St. Paul Ave embraced the idea of a Habitat home in their neighborhood. They looked forward to being part of neighborhood that helped someone realize their dream of affordable homeownership. Many of them attended the groundbreaking ceremony, a BBQ block party event, and the home dedication ceremony. In fact, a neighbor a few houses down the block are not only fluent in Spanish but had visited Claudia’s hometown in Mexico. Huddled together with volunteers, we blessed the work that was about to take place, and read aloud a proclamation from Governor Rickets celebrating our milestone build in conjunction with Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial. We were excited to see so many friendly faces throughout the build process who wanted to celebrate and honor building our 150th home, including Home Builders Association of Lincoln; which raised extra funds in honor of Build #150. And Lincoln Modern Quilters who made a beautiful quilt celebrating Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial and raffled the quilt to raise money in honor of Build #150. Build #150 brought on many new partners including: White Castle Roofing, Sentry Electric, Husker Electric Supply, Crescent Electric Supply, 3E Electric Supply, Comforttechs Heating & Cooling, and Window Option Specialists; all who donated in-kind materials and labor making this build one-of-a-kind. A few months later, on a beautiful, sunny August morning, we all gathered one last time; this time to thank God for our blessings and to ask for this new house to become a place of safety and love for Claudia and her family. Volunteers, subcontractors, donors, board members, friends, and neighbors rejoiced in the moment when Claudia was handed the keys to her new HOME. The need for affordable housing in our community continues to grow, and so does our resolve to respond to this challenge. But we can’t do it alone. These homes were built on location, one at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and the other at Lincoln Berean Church. Each church exclusively sponsored the build in their parking lot through generous donations from their congregations. From the wall raising to being moved to their final lots, the congregations were a part of the whole process including the transformation of turning a house into a home. St. Marks United Methodist Church raised the walls on their parking lot build on Saturday, April 9, 2016, joined by Habitat homeowner Nyabuony and her family. Nyabuony lives with her three children and granddaughter, as Nyabuony is her legal guardian. After losing her husband in 2012 and oldest daughter in 2013, Nyabuony struggled with finding a way to earn enough income to raise a family as a single mom. Now, as a Habitat homeowner, her children have a place to call their own and a stable environment to grow up in. It would not have been possible without the support of St. Marks United Methodist Church and the thousands of volunteer hours that went in to making their house a home. Nyabuony closed on her house on November 10, 2016. In early 2017 the second parking lot build began at Lincoln Berean Church. Habitat homeowner Anna, was truly blessed to be able to purchase an affordable home from Habitat for her and herfamily. Anna is divorced, and her focus is having a safe place to play and spend time together when they are under the same roof. As a mom helping to raise four children, she has worked diligently to provide a loving and safe environment for her children. Through the generosity of St. Mark's United Methodist Church and Lincoln Berean Church, Nyabuony and Anna are able to live their dream of homeownership, while providing safe and affordable housing for their families. The congregations donated physical labor, resources, time and money to build homes for these families to cherish.
