Time has done funny things in this last year. It feels as if
all our rhythms of life have been upended and we have
had to manage time in a very different way. At moments
time has seemed like it is never ending, each day
spanning into the horizon as we adapt to how to be very
much more local and centred at home. The rush of life
curtailed and stopped. Time has on other occasions felt
earth shatteringly short as more and more has been
crammed into the 24 hours available during the day. I
know some parents who wake at 5am to work for three
hours, before then home schooling for the next 6, and
then picking up work again late into the evenings. It has
for some felt like ground hog day. Time means different
things to different people and circumstances and for all
people that in itself has been fundamentally changed in
the last year.
As this April 2021 and Easter comes around again it is a
passage from Ecclesiastes that I have been pondering.
(Ecclesiastes is bang on half way through the bible if you
open it in the middle - it will be somewhere near there!)
Ecclesiastes addresses the subject of time, and what
God’s time might look like
In Chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes the writer speaks about time.
That there is a time for everything. A time for different
seasons. A time for different actions. A time for different
emotions. It speaks of a time of mourning and a time of
4
׉	7cassandra://n7nnX0THDh7GZiqSeWfRYIZBjTOvcearDjU-eOylQh04H`̵`m<Dh׉Erdancing, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to
search and a time to give up. It speaks of a time to heal.
Ecclesiastes doesn’t shy away from the hard and
challenging messages either, it controversially perhaps
speaks of a time to tear up, a time to die and a time for
war.
More and more I am convinced as I listen to different
people about their experiences of the last year, I am sure
that as a world, as a country and as this small community
of Fishponds, as a church that we need that time of
healing more than ever. And yet what does that look like?
What does healing look like?
It may well as we emerge to less restrictions look like
being able to see people who we haven’t for over a year.
It may mean a gentle walk to the shops for the first time in
months. It may mean emerging slowly and taking our time
to see how the world has changed and who we are now
as a people. It may mean time to look back and reflect
and remember, to pray and to contemplate what God
needs of us now in this time? –Does that look like it used
to? Do we want it to? Does it need to?
To seek healing can mean making peace with friends and
family and neighbours, where perhaps fractious
encounters and conversations (online and off!) due to
heightened anxiety and stress has led to broken
relationships. It might look like making time for
conversations that are more in depth and less fleeting
than before. Checking in and saying not just “How are
you?” – but - “How has it been for you”. A time of healing
will no doubt involve a lot of listening. A lot of grieving. A
lot of catch up and a lot of time to reflect on who now we
might be.

It is a time of
tension between the cross and the empty tomb. It is a
time of mourning and a time of celebration. It is the place
and time when Christians believe that God completely re
set the way of the world through breaking the power and
fear that death holds over humanity, and making us a
resurrection people. A people who believe that death in
the light of Jesus resurrection has been transformed. It is
ultimately a time of healing.
I hope and pray that in this time – between the wisdom of
Ecclesiastes and the place of Easter
- that as churches
we will know that Easter message, proclaim the greatness
of the empty tomb and take the time to know the healing
power and might of Jesus Christ who conquered the
grave in God’s name.

Come, still your hearts, let troubles go
For you believe in Me,
And I am with you, I will show
The way ahead of thee.
My Father’s house has many rooms
You know my words are so!
My Spirit and my Word illumes
The way that you shall go.
I am the Way, the Truth, the Life
Believe and you shall see
The way through tempest and through strife
To My eternity.

DIOCESE OF BRISTOL
Transforming Church. Together
Our world is constantly changing with many
opportunities and challenges, affecting our daily
lives and our relationships with others.
The Diocese of Bristol wants to ensure it shares God’s hope
by meeting everyone’s spiritual needs, inspiring worship,
transforming lives and providing support where it is needed
most.
Together we want to become a better church. Together we
want to be a force for good, and be open and welcoming to
all.

participating in Transforming Church. Together, a process
of developing a new vision and set off priorities for the
diocese over the coming years.
WHAT IS TRANSFORMING CHURCH?
The Church of England in our region is shaping a new vision
and set of priorities for the coming years. We want to
understand what we do well, what we can change for the
better and create a positive way forward together.
We will listen carefully to understand what each other think
and feel about God and the Church of England, but also
about our communities, society and the world.
The aim is to be relentlessly inclusive in our approach and
we are committed to listening to voices that we don’t often
hear, opinions that we find difficult and those that challenge
the status quo.
Who is it for?
Transforming Church. Together is for everyone in the
Diocese of Bristol, both within and outside the church.
We aim to be relentlessly inclusive in our approach and we
are committed to listening to voices that we don’t often hear.
We want to engage with and understand the perspectives of
people inside the church, those who relate to it and those
who may never have given it a thought.
Why are you doing this now?
This work begins in a complex world that is experiencing
seismic changes. Covid-19, Brexit, racism, growing
inequalities, the climate crisis, ongoing digital revolution,
approaching recession and debates over human identity are
disrupting and changing society and communities.
At the same time, we know that numbers of regular
worshippers are declining and the role of the Church of

With every gift, we help
people like Rose and
stop this climate crisis
In Kenya, extreme weather is making it
harder and harder to survive. For
communities fighting the climate crisis,
every last drop matters and every last
one of us can help them thrive. The
coronavirus pandemic has only
increased the urgent need for families to
access a reliable source of water.
The devastating climate crisis robs
people of the water and food they need
to live.
Rose walks for six hours to fetch water
for her grandchildren. She tries hard to
give them the kind of life she
remembers from when she was a girl:
when the rivers flowed with water and
the crops bore fruit.
Rose and her grandchildren shouldn’t
have to go hungry. A simple earth
dam, built with the help of Christian
Aid’s partners and your donations, could completely change
her life.
This Christian Aid Week, you can be one of the hundreds of
thousands of our supporters who give, act and pray to stop
this climate crisis driving people like Rose to hunger.

MATE GO FOR BROKE (N!)
IN A SPONSORED HALF MARATHON FOR
CHRISTIAN AID AND SELF INJURY SUPPORT.
Well….so it comes to this. After 5 years of plodding up and
down the cycle path and around the Frome Valley just for
fun, it felt the right time to try and run a half marathon –
which I have never done before in my whole life. That’s a
whopping 13 miles! It’s not an organised one – like the
Bristol half marathon (most of those happen on a Sunday so
a bit awkward!) but just me and a mate (Flo Weston) running
that 13 miles up the cycle path from Bath to Bristol on
Monday April 19th 2021. So you will have to trust us – and
Strava! Anyhow it would seem odd to run this and not do it
for charity.
There are so many charities that I could support – but one of
the first that I was aware of as a child was Christian Aid. I
was taken out to post those envelopes through letter boxes
and then sent back to collect them a week later. I have since
then always had a bit of a soft spot for this charity. It is also
Christian Aids 75th Anniversary – so if I could get 75
donations that would be wonderful! It resources people
locally in communities to make long term and sustainable
change. It works in countries regardless of creed or colour. It
is a rather wonderful thing and also close to the hearts of
many in St Marys and All Saints. Like lots of charities this
year – the pandemic has made it more than difficult to
fundraise. So if you want to, if you used to bake or buy a
cake each month at All Saints or you went along to the
quizzes at St Marys or if this is the easiest way to do
something for someone else in the world right now then
please do think about sponsoring me.

׉	7cassandra://vYDP7fpdy9hsmlwiPvcI9z0YYGixiqNHZz_hNgUriKM/`̵`m<Dh׉EThis year Christian Aids focus is three fold – KENYA, COVID
REPONSE AND CLIMATE JUSTICE – an incredible country,
an immediate need and a long term essential.
Alternatively if you want to support a local closer to home
charity then Flo (my running buddy) is running for – Self Injury
Support – SIS - A local mental health team, who provide
support and training to those who are affected by self-harm.
They are very close to the ground and local in Bristol
supporting a 24 hour helpline for people. It’s also a brilliant
charity. Flo says this
“Despite the rhetoric around the importance of mental health,
charities supporting individuals and their families are
struggling to secure funding amid all the change and
uncertainty. I have been involve with Self Injury Support for 3
years and they are quite simply amazing at what they do. Just
as important to me as raising money, is raising the profile of
SIS in the hope that more people will be able to access their
fantastic resources.”
So if you want to give, to both or either of these charities - we
would be both delighted and humbled. We would also value
your prayers. If you have people you know who would like to
support either of us or both then please do share this “Good
news”.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!
April brings us to Easter – the crucifixion, death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ - the triumphant highlight of
the Christian year.
As St Paul pointed out, unless Jesus really did rise again,
our faith is useless, and we may as well forget any hope of
heaven or eternal life.

able to receive the Christmas gifts
that were so kindly donated by many
off you during our Nativity Trail in
December.
John delivered them all on your behalf and received this
following letter from them.
I would like to thank you and your fellow collectors for
your recent donation on behalf of everyone at
Barnardo’s, not least the children and families who will
benefit from your generosity.
Barnardo’s supported 358,800 children, young people,
parents and carers in 2019/2020 across the UK.
Through our diverse local services we help the most
vulnerable children and young people to transform
their lives. We do this because we believe in children.
Donations such as yours go a long way to making a
lasting difference to the lives of children, young people
and families, and we are extremely grateful for your
support in what has been an extremely difficult year.
Thank you again for choosing Barnardo’s.
For young people from year 7
and upwards. To meet to talk, learn,
pray and have fun together.

10Publishing, £2.99 (discounts for packs)
We don’t like to think about death. It’s morbid and
uncomfortable because if we’re honest, deep down, many of
us are fearful about what will happen when our time comes.
But what if there was one who could take us through the
door marked death with confidence? The story of Easter
contains the greatest news – the answer to our biggest
problem that will bring peace, assurance and freedom.
Easter means that death can be the doorway to the beginning of the most
wonderful experience of our lives.
Stuck in the Mud? – stories of Hope for When You’re Stuck
by John Prockter, Monarch, £8.99
At times of difficulty or transition we can often feel unable to
move forward.
Framed around 12 real-life sticking points in John Prockter’s
life, this book offers hope in a faithful God and a pathway
through difficult times. This could be helpful for those wanting
to engage in the ups and downs of discipleship.
Slow Down, Show Up and Pray by Ruth Rice, Authentic, £9.99
Looking after our mental health has never been so important. Many of us
want to find simple ways to help our wellbeing that we can fit into our
everyday life.
After suffering her own mental health crisis, Ruth Rice set
up the Renew Wellbeing charity, which helps churches to
open safe spaces to help communities attend to their
mental and emotional health. Packed full of personal
stories, resources and practical guidance, this book will
enable you to maintain your own wellbeing. Be present.
Be prayerful. Be in partnership.

Happy Easter to everyone, I hope you enjoy any Easter
Eggs that you may get. (I’m hoping!)
It will be good to be able to celebrate Easter this year in
Church, even though it will still be done with socially
distancing in place. We still have to do our bit in taking
care and staying safe, then in no time we will be able to
get around more freely.
So as Easter is here, I guess I’ll send you on an Easter
Egg Hunt. Throughout the magazine I have hidden or tried
too, coloured Easter eggs, how many can you find. Will let
you know how many next month.
The deadline for the May issue will be Sunday 11th April
or earlier. Email your articles to anita@lavis.org.uk or call
0117 3079117.
