By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
On March 20, it will officially be Spring at Lake Ashton! This is a time for beautiful flowers blooming, cute
baby animals, and lots of guests in the community! Staff loves to see residents showing guests the
amazing amenities at Lake Ashton and it is even more enjoyable to meet their family and friends,
especially the little ones! While this is the busiest time of year for everyone at Lake Ashton, be sure to
take time out to "smell the flowers" and enjoy your community. There is a plethora of things to do at
Lake Ashton and staff is here to help. Be sure to stop by the Activities Desk to see what fun things are
planned for the month! With many new residents moving in this is a good time for seasoned residents to
show new residents how to enjoy everything Lake Ashton has to offer. Invite a new resident to enjoy a
meal at Ashton Tap and Grill or have a drink by the pool. Suggest that they come to a special event,
fitness class, a movie in the Cinema, or a game of bowling. Book a tee time and enjoy the beautiful Lake
Ashton golf courses with a new neighbor. Whatever it is, help a new resident feel happy and accepted in
their new community by being friendly and welcoming. Remember, a good way to start a new
relationship is by having an open heart, mind, and arms.
Many projects are being worked on in and around the Clubhouse. Ashton Tap and Grill has received a
new paint job and the acoustic panels are in the process of being recovered and will be installed soon.
The column caps along Thompson Nursery Road have been pressure washed and will painted soon. A
new pool lift has been installed at the Outdoor Pool and stop bars have been repainted at the
intersection of Mulligan Drive and Dunmore Drive and
the intersection of Lake Ashton Blvd and Ashton Club
Drive. Supervisors and Staff will be working on
planning for the 2023 fiscal year budget soon. Any
suggested projects or budget considerations can be
sent to cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. Staff is also
working on a special project that will involve the entire
community in adding to the beauty of the Clubhouse.
Stay tuned for more details in the April LA Times.
Ashton Tap and Grill has a new Pool/Bar menu in
addition to new lunch and dinner menus. Stop by to
taste some of the new menu options or enjoy some
best sellers. More details to be released via email
blast. If you do not currently receive news blasts,
email valerie@lakeashtoncdd.com.

WILDLIFE ALERT: WATCH
FOR ALLIGATORS
Alligators and crocodiles are an
important part of Florida's heritage
and play a valuable role in the
ecosystems where they live. Those who
live near lakes and ponds should expect to see
alligators from time to time but they should never be
fed or approached.
If you see an alligator:
• Always give these reptiles a respectful distance -- at
least 10 feet -- and always leave them alone
• If you encounter an alligator outside its natural
habitat, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 1-866FWC-GATOR
(392-4286).
• Alligators are nocturnal animals, more active during
the night. After dark, avoid fresh and brackish bodies
of water, though alligators sometimes lurk in salt
water. Unprovoked bites will often occur at the edge
of the water.
• Never feed alligators; it encourages them to lose
their natural fear of people.
• Small children and small animals like pets are
generally more at risk than large adults.
• Female alligators protect their nests by hissing and
opening their mouths; this does not mean they are
preparing to attack.
• Alligators under 4 feet in length are not considered
a threat to humans.
As long as residents have a healthy respect for
wildlife, including alligators, there are opportunities
to live and let live.

By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director
March ushers in spring for all of us Floridians and after the relatively cool temperatures we had
in February most of us will welcome the consistently warmer weather. We’re excited to announce
new programming to Lake Ashton residents at the HFC. The Cardio Kickboxing classes, the new
Bible Study classes, and the expanded beginner watercolor classes are in full swing. The themed
parties and Karaoke parties will continue as well. Our exercise classes, water sports, crafting groups,
gamers and dance classes are going strong also.
February saw new flooring being installed in the Sports Court, Racquetball Court and Fitness
Center. The inconvenience was minimal, and residents are certainly enjoying the new floors! With
the new basketballs purchased, Monday night basketball could take on new expectations! The dart
boards are sporting new darts and the billiard cues have new rack holders as well. The Ping Pong
players are enjoying their new table weekly also.
The pool area will be taking on a more tropical look soon, as the Lake Ashton Garden Club is
providing the knowledge, plants and TLC to care for and maintain plants in that area. The staff is
excited to be working with these fine ladies and we can all appreciate their expertise and time
donated. If you see them in the HFC, please don’t forget to thank them for their efforts. There will
be a newsletter article highlighting them coming up very soon in the LA Connection.
The Sawgrass Cart path is completed as is all
the irrigation repairs in the common areas.
The bathroom on hole # 6 west, should be
totally completed by the time this newsletter
goes to print.

This is quite a sophisticated operation with 3
private exam rooms available to residents
including some aesthetic procedures available
as well as the normal screenings, etc.
As you can see from this partial listing of
projects, the LA II CDD Board and staff are
working very hard to provide the very best for
our residents. Check out our calendar insert
or phone the HFC Activities Desk at

GGAME ROOM REMINDERS
With card tables, poker tables, and billiard tables
available for use in the Game Room, anyone booking
a reservation in the Clubhouse Game Room should
be aware that the room will be available for multiple
activities at the same time. For example, if someone
has reserved the room to play cards or conduct a
meeting, the room will still be available for open play
on the billiards tables. If this does not match your
needs staff will try their hardest to find a room that
will be better suited for what you require. Please

Hooded Mergansers are a fairly
common winter resident of Lake Ashton.
Small flocks can be seen fishing on the
retention ponds of the West Course. They
dive for and enjoy the fish, crustaceans and
aquatic insects the retention ponds have to
offer. The male is breathtaking in its garb that
rivals even the Wood Duck. With a large white
fan-shaped head patch it is a species that
does not go unnoticed. The drake raises its
crest when it wants to impress the ladies. The
females and juveniles sport the same shape
and are brownish overall. These are diving
ducks in the Merganser family. All Mergansers
are diving ducks that have long, thin, serrated
bills to help them catch their prey. North
America has three Merganser species and
Lake Ashton is fortunate to have the smallest
and perhaps most beautiful of these three,
the Hoodies at Lake Ashton each winter.
LIVING WITH WILDLIFE
There are many types of
wildlife at Lake Ashton. During
the spring many young animals,
including sandhill cranes (also
called colts), are seen roaming
around Lake Ashton. At times
residents may see a baby on its
own and think it has been orphaned by its parents.
Generally, if you find a baby animal it is best to
leave it alone. Rarely are animals actually
orphaned; the parent may be searching for food
or observing its young from a distance. Do not
pick up baby animals or remove them from their
natural environment. Instead, report wildlife you
think may be injured or orphaned to the nearest
FWC Regional Office at 863-648-3200. Removing
the baby could be dangerous for the baby as well
as the person removing. Reference https://
myfwc.com/conservation/you-conserve/wildlife/
injured-orphaned/
While some residents may think it is innocent to
throw some pieces of old bread in their back yard
to feed the birds or maybe in a pond to feed the
ducks; it is illegal to feed wildlife and can create an
unfavorable situation. Species with rules related to
feeding include bears, coyotes, foxes, raccoons,
pelicans, alligators, crocodiles, and sandhill cranes.
Feeding wildlife can reduce their fear of humans
which may result in aggression and the need for
the animal to be removed or killed in order to
protect public safety.
Why is feeding cranes prohibited?
• Cranes fed by humans can become aggressive
toward people. In several instances, children
have been attacked by cranes.
• Cranes also have been known to damage
window screens and do other property damage
such as scratching at windows.
• Cranes attracted to people's yards for feed are
put at risk as they walk across roads. Many
sandhill cranes are killed each year on Florida
roads.
• The cranes' diets, which normally are quite
diverse, are disrupted when they eat one food
item (such as corn), consistently.
• Heavy pesticide use in urban lawns also is of
concern. Young sandhill cranes have died from
pesticide poisoning.
16
People may inadvertently put sandhill cranes at
risk when they attract them with feed. This
includes accidental feeding, such as when bird
seed is spilled from bird feeders onto the ground
below. In 2002, the Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission made it illegal to
intentionally feed sandhill cranes (Florida
Administrative Code 68A-4.001(6)). It's never a
good idea to feed wildlife. Florida sandhill cranes
have an abundance of natural foods (insects and
small animals) and they do not need handouts
from humans. Reference https://myfwc.com/

Why does my pond smell?
The bad odor you notice
typically comes from
one of three sources:
rotting organic matter,
water turnover or
certain types of algae.
Ponds with stagnant,
poorly oxygenated
water develop into
temperature layers.
Decaying organic matter
settles on the bottom of
the pond where there is little oxygen, thus
slowing the breakdown process and producing
odor. Windy cooler weather or heavy rain storms
can cause a pond to mix, which brings the bad
water to the surface.

The month of March hosts some interesting yet fun
games: a Las Vegas Scramble, Step Aside
Scramble, and a Throw Out. Lots of laughter is a
guarantee for these days! Here are a few tips that
will help speed up play without any negative
effects on your game.
• Play "Ready Golf"
• Always carry a spare ball in your pocket.
• Decide what club to use before going to your
ball. If undecided, take an additional club - this
avoids making additional trips back to your cart.
• Line up your putt before it's your turn so you are
ready to putt.
• Always record your score (and your teammate's)
at the next tee. Never record your score at the
green.
There will be two open board positions in April,
Vice President and Secretary. If anyone is
interested or has any questions about the Niners,
please contact Karen Ferrande at 207-451-0143.

Best deal this year with Brad
Brad is the most courteous, polite and so knowledgeable about Winter

LA GARDEN CLUB
By Lynn Davis
The Lake Ashton Garden Club met February 9 and
discussed numerous upcoming projects. Many
members provided insightful suggestions on making
the HFC pool area more inviting. The Garden Club
was approached by individuals who frequent the pool
and asked for help. Club members voted supporting
this project. Members who were interested signed up
to help either implement or maintain the plantings.
The interested group members will be called and
hopefully it can be started soon. Also, continual
discussion continues for updating plants around the
pavilion at the Clubhouse. After the meeting agenda,
members learned to use succulents and air plants to
create a lasting visual accent in any potted plant.
Laminated bookmarks were returned to members
from the January meeting. The Club's next meeting is
March 9 at 10 am in the Pavilion. Hopefully, it'll be
time spent to finalize or implement plants for the HFC
pool area and other upcoming projects. New
members are always welcomed. National Gardening
Day is on April 14 this year. Please come join in on
celebration at the Pavilion from 10:30 am to 12:30
pm. It's free and no green thumbs needed!

LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
Unfortunately, due to Omicron, several in person
meetings of LA Rockers had to be canceled.
Despite this, the dedicated LA Rockers have still
been painting up a storm. Welcome Rocks are
always needed and are such a good way to make
new residents feel right at home. Kindness Rocks
are being hidden all around Lake Ashton — the
group’s mission is to spread happiness and joy
throughout the Lake Ashton community. It is
believed that a message (painted on a rock)
received at just the right moment can change
someone's entire day, outlook, and life. In
addition, there have been several online
challenges and Easter Rocks are being collected to
be distributed to the residents and staff of Waters
Edge Nursing in Winter Haven.
Hopefully in person meetings will be able to take
place throughout March. If so, come to the HFC
Community Center on alternate Wednesdays from
2 to 4 pm to meet a great group of people and
learn to paint rocks. You don't have to be a
talented painter — just pick up a small rock, paint
a background, write a message, and hide it for
someone else to find. It doesn't cost anything to
try this since there is no need for first timers to
make a huge investment for supplies - you can
borrow what you need. Please join the group at
the upcoming meetings that will be held on March
9 and 23. To attend, join the Facebook group "LA
Rockers" or contact either MJ Richards
(mjmrichards517@gmail.com) or Alice Mayer
(aamayer1@gmail.com) to let them know you are
coming. Last minute meeting cancellations are
posted on the LA Rockers Facebook page, so if in
doubt, check before you come.

Your opportunity to create unique, one-of-a-kind
jewelry will happen April 12 at 10 am in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. For $40, you will learn how to

to glass fusing in a kiln, instructions on glass cutting,
and equipment usage. The remainder of the class is
