Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
it seems a long time since we have seen a proper match. This is
officially our 124th anniversary and although we’ve only played here
at Gorton Street for the last 74 years we’ve always had our home in
this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Mini’s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and I’m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, £40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects, that we hope will be complete
by Christmas.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. We’d not be able to operate without their contributions. I can’t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
‘Walking Rugby’ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those who’d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.
Once again, welcome to the club and please enjoy your day. Our clubhouse
bar is CAMRA award-winning and (for those over the age of 18)
I’m informed has a fine selection of match refreshment, especially
with our new friends from the First Chop Brewery.

A warm welcome to all our members and visitors at Eccles RFC today. After
17 long months of repression, it's great to finally have competitive Rugby
and supporters back at Gorton Street.
Our 1XV men will be looking to get their season off to a positive start by
defeating Burnley in the first round of the Lancashire Plate whilst our 2XV
will entertain the gentlemen of Littleborough in a pre-season warm up. I
wish good luck to all the players, especially our own homegrown former
colts stepping up for their first taste of senior rugby. I look forward to seeing
you in the bar after the match, where you can enjoy a glass of first class ale
from our match sponsor and local brewer First Chop.
Speaking of which I’ll take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers
whose exemplary efforts made last weekend’s 10th Eccles Beer & Gin
Festival an outstanding success. The Eccles Cup tournament provided an
entertaining afternoon of attacking rugby and I extend my appreciation to
Leigh, Vale of Lune and Bolton who accepted the challenge and made a
huge contribution to the day. The competition was a timely reminder of what
we’ve all been missing. Eccles claimed the Bowl and Leigh lifted the Cup (a
polished stainless steel bucket and £215 in donations for their charity) in
an exciting final with Vale that was decided in extra time with a dramatic
long range 'golden points' penalty kick! Pure Theatre! It was disappointing
that so many invited clubs were unable to assemble a team and pulled out
at the last minute. I hope the North West rugby community is able to quickly
recover from the damage done by COVID and (overcoming GMS) begin once
again to attract players back to the game.
Here at Eccles, with the support of our sponsors, we’re going to great
lengths to make membership of our club attractive and represent great
value for our community. We have 18 teams for boys, girls, ladies and men,
starting at U5s all the way up to Vets! I hope you enjoy your match experience
today and you keep returning throughout the season to support our
teams. Regardless of age or ability, all players appreciate encouragement
from the touchline.
This season we are celebrating 124 years at Eccles RFC and 100 years
playing in blue and white hoops. But the club, and indeed rugby, only continues
exist if there are players, referees, volunteers, supporters and sponsors
willing to commit to its existence. All things prosper with effort. Let’s get
stuck in!

Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to everyone attending Gorton
Street today.
Well, after an extremely long and difficult time for us all, as Covid-19 put
a halt to rugby and life as we knew it, we are finally able to welcome back
competitive rugby as the 1XV take on old friends Burnley in the first
round of the Lancashire Plate.
Eccles will be fielding three Senior male teams today, as the 2XV host
Littleborough 2XV at Gorton Street, while our 3XV make the short journey
over to Trafford MV to play in what we hope will be the first of hopefully
many games this season. I wish all our players and teams good luck as
we look to build and learn from mistakes made during the previous two
weekends to ensure we are ready for the start of the league campaign
next Saturday.
Over the course of the season ahead, the club will be looking to maintain
its development of rugby for all, offering a training and playing experience
for everyone who wants to take part in the game we love. The provision
of both competitive and social fixtures for Male and Female players
with different aspirations is something we see as being vitally important
for the continued growth of our club. Walking Rugby and Touch Rugby
keep so many people actively engaged and have proven to be a useful
tool for the recruitment of new faces. Cultivation of Homegrown talent
through our Mini, Junior and Colts sections will remain central to our
future senior success, encouraging participation rugby at whatever level
/ format players want, for as long as they want.
I’m sure the 2021/22 season will have many exciting and disappointing
days in store up its sleeve for all clubs, but to have our game and
everything it offers back, after such a long time, should make us all feel
like Trophy Winners.
Finally a huge thanks to all the spectators, sponsors and club volunteers
involved today. Without you, days like today wouldn’t be able to happen.
Thank you and please continue in your fantastic efforts to support the
game.

SOCIAL EVENTS
Last weekend Eccles RFC held its 10th Beer & Gin Festival and many of us still
have the hangovers to prove it! This annual event didn't happen last year due to
the Covid restrictions in place at that time, so this year's festival was celebrated
in style by all with more beer sold than ever before.
The organisers owe a huge vote of thanks to the event's main sponsor, First
Chop, a local brewery, growing its business and its reputation just a few hundred
yards from our Gorton St Ground. First Chop have also agreed to sponsor a
number of First XV fixtures during the forthcoming season, so please, when
visiting the bar, sample some of their very excellent products and drink to our
sponsor's good health! If you are in need of a laugh, I would also urge you to
check out the 'Beer Run’ promotional video, which was produced by our own
director extraordinaire Chris Gaffey.
Our appreciation should be expressed to the event organiser 'Sergeant Major'
Martin Parkinson, who ran the event with military precision, barking out his
orders to his troops, who totally ignored him and instead ensured that everything
ran smoothly, like a well oiled machine! Talking of well oiled, Festival goers over
the 3 days were able to enjoy a huge selection of local ales, with every Salford
brewery represented. We began the festival with 21 firkins of real ale and cider
in the cellar, plus kegs of lager and we were left with the equivalent of 1 firkin,
just 5% in reserve. Well done Martin!
During the afternoon, our boys performed well in the inaugural Eccles Cup '100
Years of Hoops' competition, winning the Eccles Bowl, after loosing narrowly 5-7
to the tournament winners Leigh RUFC in the previous round. Well done all and
thanks to all who organised and participated in entertaining us during the day.
This pre-season competition featuring local clubs, looks set to grow and we hope
will become a traditional part of club's warm ups in the coming years.
Continuing the homegrown theme, our very own Moonlight Rumours provided
the musical entertainment on the Saturday afternoon and evening. With two of
our ex players amongst their ranks, they received a great Eccles welcome, from
a crowd numbering almost 300 who enjoyed the band's polished renditions of
numerous modern classics. Well done Dan, Ant and the boys!
Again, many thanks to our sponsors and a huge tribute to our volunteers,
without whom these events simply couldn't happen, you deserve a medal.
Finally, our thanks to all who attended and helped make this event such a memorable
success. We look forward to keeping you in touch with news of future
Club events and plans, as we go forward into the forthcoming season.

2021/22 can’t come soon enough for
our mighty Mini & Junior Section.
Festivals, trips, tours and more could
make it our most exciting season to
date! Our huge network of volunteers
welcome all
children and families
interested in joining the best rugby
family Salford has to offer.
Dressed to Impress - This September,
all Eccles Mini and Junior members
will receive a brand new Eccles playing
kit. Our club ethos of ‘Rugby for All’
has ensured that our entire junior
family will wear the same shirt, shorts,
socks and beam with pride.
No zoom and gloom - Straight off the
back of our lockdown success in the
Ecclesathalon, our Junior teams
enjoyed weekly online training
sessions,
competitions,
challenges
and even fancy dress! Following this, a
short and sweet 2020/21 playing
season was signed off in style in the
spring as we welcomed local opponents
to Gorton Street in May. Our
teams enjoyed 5 weeks of competitive
fixtures as our players, coaches and
management team embraced the
return of REAL rugby!
Following the success of the Girls
Mini Warrior events, we hosted a boys
‘JUNIOR BARBARIAN’ event in July.
Age-Grade Players from U7- U16 and
new recruits enjoyed a day of specialist
coaching, a free branded t-shirt
and an assault course challenge.
This, alongside our presentation
events over the Summer months,
have repeatedly demonstrated how
Eccles Junior rugby is about fun,
festivity and friendship.
This August, the club will be appointing

After a strange year defined by
the ever-changing rules of the
Covid epidemic, we are looking
forward to finally playing some
competitive Rugby again next
month.
We worked hard to keep momentum
by training with every opportunity
the RUFC return-to-rugby
schedule afforded us. We genuinely
hoped to restart matches in
December, and had fixtures
setup before the second, harsher,
lockdown hit.
When we emerged from restrictions
at Easter we had a brief
training window before we
entered our short, 1 month
season of friendlies.
Our fixture secretary set us a
hard task with our May matches,
3 strong Cheshire teams and the
Lancashire champions. We only
managed one win, over Altrincham
Kersal who we are pooled
with in the Halbro Colts league.
However, our best result was
surprisingly a defeat, losing 14:9
to regular Lancashire champions
Warrington. We were winning at
half time, and only poor luck in
the dying minutes cost us a
famous victory.
A shortage of backs led us to two
defaults against strong Cheshire
teams, with a 13:33 loss to
Crewe where we fielded 13
forwards and only 2 backs, and a
36:7 loss to Cheshire champions
Lymm.
We have many dual code players,
and May overlapped with
traditional league season leaving
us short in many key positions.
The positive from this was
it gave us a chance to play our
last two matches with several
U16 players who stepped up
fantastically to the challenge of
colts’ rugby.
The summer break also gave us
a fresh opportunity in the shape
of the request to appear as a
rugby team in a forthcoming
Netflix/BBC joint production. Our
lads rehearsed with the Actors
during the July/August off
season, learning how to produce
tackles that while looking hard,
allowed the Actors to live and
fight again. This culminated in
an intensive 3 days of filming in
the August sun, where the
biggest continuity challenge was
the sunburn on the boys’ arms!
The Halbro Colts league will be
starting in September, with five
matches in a ‘conference’
format, the results of which will
determine of final seeding in the
10 match colts league. Together
with league and county cups, the
lads finally have a proper
programme of competitive rugby
to look forward to.

Good afternoon and a warm welcome
from our Women and Girls section at
Eccles RFC. Whilst we have been
enjoying the Men’s 1XV prompt return
to rugby, we have spent our weeks
preparing hard for our first preseason
friendly on Sunday September 5th.
Though we can’t wait to adorn our
much loved navy and white hoops,
we’re utilising the extra sessions to
further refine our craft, whilst
introducing some newer players to the
tricks of the trade.
During a turbulent two years for the
Women’s Rugby landscape in
Manchester, we have returned to
rugby with a renewed vigour; building
a team and streamlining our vision.
We have created an environment
where learning and progress is the
cornerstone to our success. We have
successfully embedded a culture
whereby young players feel valued
and empowered to contribute to the
group. Despite being young in years,
we have a group of extremely experienced
players who have developed
since their time in our #homegrown
junior section. Leah Christian is the
epitome of our player development
programme, showcasing not only a
secure rugby knowledge and ability,
but a maturity beyond her years as
she consistently drives the standards
of those around her. Leah and other
young players such as Bonnie Fleming
and Georgia Cunliffe have strengthened
our squad in recent years, opening
the door for new players to join us
and learn in a supportive yet competitive
environment.
As a direct result of the group's collective
efforts to create something truly
unique, we have seen a rush of new
players joining our training sessions
and bolstering our playing squad. We
now have a wealth of players, each
contributing their own talent and
strengths to what is easily the most
exciting first team we have had in
years. As we prepare for our upcoming
fixtures, we’re excited to be able to
show our dedicated supporters the
fruits of our labour, and we look
forward to seeing you up on the balcony
cheering us on.

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so we’re within the RFU guidelines, and
we’re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

The Gold Award Team at
Buckingham Palace
The DofE award is the world’s
leading youth achievement award,
giving 14-24 year olds who wish to
take up the challenge, the opportunity
to strive to be the best they
can be and gain the confidence to
believe anything they put their
mind to is possible.
The programme takes between
one and four years to complete
and is recognised and valued by
employers and universities alike.
Eccles RFC were the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the DofE
award programme to its players.
The scheme was established in
honour of Christopher Tickle who
was posthumously awarded the
DofE Gold Award by HRH Prince
Phillip in 2010. Since 2011, the
club’s young people have achieved
over 100 Bronze awards, over 60
Silver awards and 48 prestigious
Gold Awards – a testament to the
hard work and dedication of the
participants and the Eccles team
of volunteer leaders.
The DofE programme is a journey
of adventure and discovery that
compliments the ethos of Rugby
by rewarding teamwork, endeavour,
physical activity, learning
skills and community volunteering.
To achieve an award a young
person must show persistence,
commitment, progress and
personal development
over
a
period of time. Every activity must
be successfully completed and
assessed. Activities take a minimum
of one hour a week over a
set period of time, so they can be
fitted in around academic study,
hobbies and social lives.
To commence a Bronze Award you
must be aged 14+ years, 15+
years for Silver and 16+ years to
start a Gold Award. For more
details on the DofE at Eccles RFC
and how to become involved
check out the club website or
email:baines.mark@virginmedia.com.

Eccles Rugby Football Club was established
in 1897 and has now worn its
iconic Blue and White hooped shirt for
100 years. The hooped shirt was first
adopted by Eccles RFC in the
aftermath of WWI, when the club had
to rebuild with many of its new recruits
running out to play at Stott Lane with
injuries suffered in the trenches. In its
early days before the war, Eccles had
played in green shirts and we believe
this switch in colours may have been a
tribute to fallen comrades in the
Salford Pals Battalions. This team
photograph taken in the winter 1921
is the earliest evidence we have of the
hooped shirt.
Our visitors today, Burnley, were
founded shortly after, in 1926 as
Calder Vale, changing their name to
Burnley in the 2002-2003 season.
Delving into the archives, our club
historian and tractor sponsor Sheila
Thomas, informs us that the first
recorded games between Eccles and
Calder Vale
appear
to be
in the 1932-33 Season.
15th October 1932 Eccles 6 v Calder
Vale 13.
14th January, 1933 Calder Vale v
Eccles.
14th January 1933 Eccles “A” 30 v
Calder Vale “A" 3.
The Eccles 1st XV Captain at this time
was H. Lamb, with our club Headquarters
at
the Rock House Hotel, Peel
Green Rd Barton, and our ground and
dressing rooms located on the other
side of the Manchester Ship canal at
Redclyffe Road, Barton. The Eccles
first team had 31 fixtures in 1932-33
season with opponents including
Halifax Vandals, Leyland Motors,
Winnington Park and Sale "A" to name
but a few.
The
club’s
playing
strength
grew
between the wars and Eccles were
able to field a 3rd team this season.
Later in 1933 an away match against
Blackpool Old Boys resulted in half
the Eccles team remaining in Blackpool
over the weekend who according
to records apparently enjoyed a great
time with a failed attempt to launch a
small pleasure craft near central pier
and one chap being left hung up on a
coat hook in the wardrobe of a
bedroom! Happy Days.

Eccles Rugby Football Club encourage
Spectators to:
• Act as a positive role model to all.
• Behave with dignity and generosity.
• Support your club’s efforts to uphold its reputation.
• Respect Rugby’s values. Discipline and Sportsmanship
define our game.
• Respect the match officials' decisions, even if they
appear to make a mistake. Remember, they are volunteers
and without them there would be no game.
• Encourage all players irrespective of their ability.
Never ridicule a player, regardless of the shirt they
wear.
• Appreciate good performance and achievement
from all players, irrespective of their team.
• Acknowledge effort and endeavour rather than the
desire to 'win at all cost'.
• Support the players. Shout ‘for’ them not ‘at’ them.
• Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials
or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour
affects the players and referee’s performance and
attitude.
• Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the
competitors.
Remember children play rugby for their own
enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
