challenge of change
Time for a change
I have had my walking boots for a few years now, and they
have been faithful companions. We have walked many miles
together during that time, on my daily walks as well as on
holiday. They are partly responsible for my physical recovery
after Covid-19, so they have a place in my heart. They fit me
very well, and we have adjusted to one another. But they are
very thin now on the soles and heels, and it is reluctantly
time for a change.
So, one recent Saturday I bought a new pair. They are clean
and smart, and fully waterproof. The soles are strong and
new. There are no signs of wear and tear. But I know that
change is never easy. They will take some time to wear in.
They may rub and I may get a blister or two. Occasionally I
will long for my old boots, and wonder, ‘Did I make a
mistake?’ Hopefully, they will become as much a part of me
as my old ones as we tread the miles together. But there is
always a risk with something new, Isn’t there?
Change is never easy in whatever form it comes. But change
is inevitable because life does not stand still, and we have to
keep adjusting and adapting and being open to fresh winds
of the Spirit. Never more so than in these present,
troublesome days.
Strangely enough as I have been meditating on this, my
reading this morning (Isaiah 9) contained a reference to
‘Every warrior’s boot used in battle … will be destined for
burning (v5).’ Oh dear. I’m sure like me, warriors were fond of
their boots too and found it hard to part with them.

JULY PRAYERS
✤We continue to pray for our country and its struggle to contain/
manage the Covid pandemic. Please sustain us, in what is
hopefully the last stage of the lockdown, and continue to
sustain us if this is further prolonged.
✤We pray for all who engaged in the entertainment, hospitality
and airport sectors of our economy, asking that support might
continue, so jobs do no permanently disappear.
✤We pray for our friends in the benefice who may have been
feeling very isolated. Help us to keep both our eyes, and ears
open to the quiet voice calling for help.
✤We continue to remember those parts of the world where
there is a shortage of vaccine, and remember that, until all are
protected, none are protected. We give thanks for for the
billion doses of vaccine, made available by the G7 nations, in
support of common humanity,
✤We pray for the Make Lunch and activities taking place at All
Saints during the school summer holidays.
✤ Lastly we pray for Diane Simms, being ordained as Benefice
Deacon on 4th July, and bless her in the ministry with us all.
Pray for Sharon Gleed, as she ends her pastoral placement
with the benefice, and ask that God would bless her in the
next phase of her ordination training and we continue to
remember Sarah Heywood, formerly of All Saints, as she ends
her first year of training at Trinity College.

Celebrating 200 Years with St Marys
It is hard to believe but 200 years ago a
small chapel was opened on the site of St
Marys Church to serve the tiny hamlet of
Fishponds. It was at that point part of the
large Parish Church of Stapleton. It was
called the Trinity Chapel (1821).
Fishponds continued to grow around the
small chapel and the church yard and this
small chapel was then extended and added to and became
St Marys in 1869. So this year in 2021 we celebrate the Bi
Centennial of St Marys (Trinity Chapel) It has been a place of
Christian worship in Fishponds, one that has seen baptisms,
festivals, harvests, weddings and burials for 200 years. This
is a place that speaks of both our deep connections to
people of the past, but also is a chance to celebrate with this
community today and to look forward to what might be the
future of this church in Fishponds.
On the weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of
September 2021 we will have a programme of an exhibition,
tours, music, recitals, cream teas, colouring competitions and
worship. We would love you to join us, celebrate with us.
Save the date in your diaries.

MAKE LUNCH SUMMER CAFÉ at ALL SAINTS
We are planning an exciting initiative at All Saints, Fishponds
this year.
We will be setting up a Summer Café in our Halls during the
school holidays. The aim is to provide a substantial meal for
families during the summer break.
To take place every Tuesday and Thursday on these dates:July
27th, 29th,
August 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th.
Each session will run from 3.00am - 7.00pm.
Our target group is pupils on Free School meals in the local
community, including students at Chester Park, Fishponds
Academy and Bristol Met.
The age range is 5-16 years plus siblings, parents and
carers. We have a catering officer who will coordinate the
supply and preparation of the meals.
We want to provide a welcoming atmosphere, with some
children’s activities such as games and crafts, and the
chance for adults to relax.

So says the Royal
Horticultural Society (RHS).
In an effort to restore the
plant’s reputation, the RHS
has been showcasing the
species at its flagship
garden in Wisley, Surrey. It
hopes to set a new trend,
and to get people to stop
seeing ivy as ‘the enemy.’
At Wisley you can now see
390 varieties of ivy, with a
vast array of leaf shapes,
sizes and colours. The RHS
EASY
wants people to see that ivy
can be an attractive and
even eco-friendly addition to
your home.
RHS experts say that ivy is
a ‘super plant’ that not only
has insulating benefits, but
also offers habitats for a
variety of wildlife, as well as
being a food source for birds
and pollinators during
months of the year when
there is very little else for
them to eat.

YOUR CUP OF TEA!
Now here’s something that will send you straight to your kitchen
to put the kettle on: the Great British cup of tea may not taste
quite so good in the future.
It seems that extreme weather and rising temperatures could
lead to inferior leaves in the future, according to Christian Aid.
Kenya, the world’s foremost exporter of black tea, is now
affected by erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, and rising
temperatures. India, Sri Lanka and China, also major tea
producers, face climate change problems as well.
Climate change has been predicted by some as likely to cut
production in Kenya’s best tea-making areas by as much as a
quarter by 2050. Even areas of only average growing conditions
could see production fall by 39 per cent.
As one tea farmer in Kenya’s Western Highlands, explained:
“We cannot predict seasons anymore. Temperatures are rising,
rainfall is erratic, often accompanied by unusual hailstones and
longer droughts. If this continues, it will make growing tea much
harder.”

Doubting Thomas
If you have ever doubted aspects of your Christian faith, St
Thomas is the saint for you. His feast day is on 3rd July.
Thomas, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples, was deeply devoted,
but also very honest whenever he got confused. When
Jesus spoke of going to his Father (John 14), Thomas was
not afraid to ask Him where His Father was. As for the
Resurrection, that really baffled Thomas. He demanded to
see the risen Jesus for himself - and touch the wounds in
His hands and feet. When Jesus appeared, Thomas’
immediate response was one of worship: “My Lord and my
God” (John 20).
Thus, Doubting Thomas’ honest doubts, turned to honest
faith, have become a reassurance for thousands of us down
the centuries who also sometimes doubt Jesus. In Doubting
Thomas’ complete affirmation of faith, after meeting the
risen, crucified Christ, we can find support for our own faith
in Him.

sustainable living by Martin Hodson and Margot
Hodson BRF £8.99
How should we look after the world we inhabit?

The Treasures of English History – witnesses to the
history of a nation.
By Matthew Byrne, Shire Publications, supported by
National Churches Trust, £17.00
This book will be a sheer delight for anyone who enjoys
the magnificent artefacts to be found in our metropolitan
cathedrals and remote parish churches.
The wide range of stunning photographs include 16th
century carvings on the choir seats of a village church to iridescent stained
glass windows commemorating the Second World War, to ultra-modern art in
Liverpool cathedral.
It is a rich selection of the best of our national church sculptures, stained-glass
windows, church furniture and architecture. Together these artistic treasures
trace the changing attitudes towards theology, politics and social life of Britain.
If you can’t get out and about this summer as much as you would like, this
book will provide you with a ‘virtual’ tour of many beautiful buildings.
God’s Treasured Possession – walk in the footsteps of
Moses. By Terry Virgo, IVP, £7.99
Do you know how God sees you? Using the story of Moses,
Terry Virgo explores how his life as a timid and reluctant
foundational leader of God’s people can inform and encourage
us in our own Christian walk today.

Well I hope you read that we are having our first Coffee
Morning, it will be lovely to be back, even though we
have to still social distance, but I think it’s safe to say that we are
all use to that now. So hope you will pop in, then if you are early
you can then make your way to St. Mary’s Fair for 11am.
By the time you have received this magazine we would have had
our Summer Fayre so will let you know how that went.
Another bit of good news, is the Horticultural Show is still taking
place but at a different venue, due to the closure of the Methodist
Church/Hall. So hope this is an event that you will show your
support by entering or even going along to take a look.
Half way through the year, time flies and here I am asking for
articles for the August issue. The deadline will be Sunday 11th
July. Articles can be emailed to anita@lavis.org.uk or give me a
ring on 0117 3079117. Take care and stay safe, Anita
