he members of the Malden
City Council do not have to
look far to see why they needed
to take action.
“When we are sitting at the Finance
Committee meetings we
see many kinds of electric-powered
bikes and devices whizzing
by on the sidewalk, said Ward 6
Councillor Stephen Winslow, of
the meeting room which has
a multi-window view of one of
Malden’s busiest thoroughfares,
“and Pleasant Street is a busy
sidewalk.
Councillor-at-Large Michelle
Luong, at a recent City Council
meeting where the issue of
e-bike safety we discussed, recalled
that the discussion has
been going on for over a year.
“Councillor [Ari] Taylor [Ward

Michelle Luong

on this issue a year ago and the
safety concerns have continued,
Councillor Luong said. “We can
have a meaningful conversation
and a working group that is going
to be able to address these issues,
because eventually somebody’s
going to get hurt and

someone’s going to get killed.
The ultimate tragedies due to
travel on electric-powered devices
have already happened
in other communities, such as

here have been plenty of near
misses, for now. Anyone who
lives in Everett, Malden, Revere
or Saugus or any community in
the state — and probably most
cities and towns across the nation
— has stories. Lots of them.
Most of us have as many stoReverend

ries as there are contained in a
deck of playing cards. Kids —
and we do mean kids, from as
young as 11 or 12 up to high
school age and beyond — zipping
down the streets, with traffic,
against traffic, in the middle
of traffic. Or, buzzing down sidewalks,
both toward and behind
unsuspecting pedestrians. How
many times have you walked
down a street on the sidewalk
and out of nowhere a scooter,
e-bike or, basically, a mini(or
NOT so mini at all) motorcycle
whips by you, with maybe a
credit card’s width between you?
News Analysis
It is not “getting bad — it’s
here — and it’s getting terrifying
at times. What we are talking
about is all the near misses: the
hundreds of times there is not a
device vs. car, device vs. person,
device vs. other device collision
or single crash. This happens
probably every week in every
city and town across the state.
The general consensus is that
the unchecked use of all of the
multitude of the newly termed“micromobility
devices by,
basically, untrained novices, is a
clear and present danger. Many
communities, not just in Massachusetts,
but across the nation,
are dealing with this, and those
who manage them from a municipal
standpoint as well as
those responsible for maintaining
safety are all talking about it.

Something “Hot Wheeled into Ward 8!
Special to The Advocate
M
ayor Gary Christenson
was on hand when Ward
8 Councillor Jadeane Sica introduced
Malden’s First Hot Wheels
Library in Ward 8 outside the Linden
Dunkin’ along the Northern
Strand Community Trail. Councillor
Sica thanked the Linden
Dunkin’/Couto Management
for allowing the placement of
the Hot Wheels Library on their
fence in Ward 8.
The “Take a Car-Leave a Car
concept was the creative idea
of Ward 8 residents John Melanson
and David Giardino, who
put a lot of time and creativity
into the idea. David built the
display from scratch, creating an
individual parking spot for each
car. Children are encouraged
to take a car, leave a car, trade a
car, or just share the fun! A child
does not need to leave a car in
order to take one. Any resident
who has any Hot Wheels or other
small toy cars at home that children
have outgrown are invited
to stop by and “park a few in the
library for another child to enjoy!
John created a Facebook
group just for the Hot Wheels
Library so he can keep track of
the cars as they come and go.
“If your child picks out a favorite
car, snap a picture and share
it in the group, said Councillor
Sica. “If you stop by to donate or

~ Malden Musings ~
Lana & Milo Meet Vinyl Records
By Peter Levine
I
n the “fill my heart with song
department, in three parts...
1. The Newport Jazz Festival
has once again come and gone.
My one time attending was
many years ago and — to be
honest — I remember very little
from the day (“bad ice cube
day?). We started the Saturday
morning at Mike’s Café, made
Newport halfway through Mel
Torme’s first set and jetted back
to Malden for last call at the
Roadside. I recently broke out
my pristine copy of Newport
1958 Mahalia Jackson vinyl record
and have been wearing it
out ever since. The “Queen of
Gospel performed a legendary,
star-making set at the festival
that year highlighted by
powerful renditions of my faves,
“The Lord’s Prayer, “An Evening
Prayer and “Didn’t It Rain.
2. Malden/Mahalia connection...mid-1960s,
Preacher Jack
is a Mahalia fanatic. Jack was
famous for his unhinged boogie-woogie
performances but
was also an accomplished pen
and ink guy. Long story short,
he pens a 10x12 portrait of Mahalia,
finds an address in a fanzine,
sends her the drawing firstclass
postage. Six months passed
without a thank you note from
the “little girl with the big voice
(which quite a few artists did in
those days). Jack is in Malden
Square, walks into Woolworths,
picks up a copy of Look Magazine
with Mahalia on the cover
and opens to page 12. Jack
stood gob smacked for what he
described as feeling like “eternity
when he spied a photo taken
in Mahalia’s living room with
Jack’s pen and ink matted and
framed on the wall going up the
stairs to the bedrooms. He kept
that Look Magazine on him for
decades until it finally evaporated
into thin air. True story.
3. Which brings me to my
grandchildren Christian (16),
Lola (13), Lana (6) and Milo (4),
who are now the proud owners
of their very own turntable.

Although it was just a “hello,

â— This is a Public Service Announcement
brought to you
by the good folks (me) at Malden
Musings: It is now safe once
again to travel down Highland
Ave. without fear of losing your
muffler or blowing out a tire,
but continue to avoid Pleasant
Street, Canal, Broadway, Lebanon
from basically Melrose
to Malden for that matter, and
most of Salem Street. No need
to thank me.
In the “she gives Malden a
bad name department, I present
to you... the (late) middle-aged
woman driving for Uber in the
“USA 250 sweatshirt and unflattering
activewear parked in
the bike lane on Exchange Street
who, when alerted by a passerby
that she was parked in said
bike lane, told the passerby to
“mind their own expletive deleted
business accompanied
by the one-fingered salute. Because
of her ill-mannered and
entitled “Karen response, she
will bypass GO and immediately
be enshrined in the “Giving Malden
a Bad Name Boorish Behavior
Hall of Fame. So be it, so shall
it be done.
â— Fun facts brought to you by
those of us who love the esoteric
side of pop culture (Paul Sherman?)...
Hal Smith ruled in 1960!
There was a catcher named Hal
W. Smith who hit a Game 7 goahead
three-run home run for
the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh
Pirates. There was also an
All-Star catcher named Hal R.
Smith who played for the Saint
Louis Cardinals and finally there
was the lovable Mayberry town
drunkard of the Andy Griffith
Show, Hal Smith aka Otis Campbell.
How ’bout that!
â— Speaking of PSS, next time
you are there enjoying any of
their fabulous offerings (especially
their pizza pie!), say hello
to MHS Class of 1975’s Paula Cagno,
who is the newest great hire
at that Malden institution. She’s
like wicked nice just like the rest
of her family.
The Development Director
at Bread of Life, Patty “Frankie’s

and asked if I could spread
the word. BOL has a new initiative
— they’ve launched a garden
paver fundraiser: 12x12 laser-engraved
bricks to be placed
at BOL along the bike path in between
their garden planters (and

one-time donation. It’s the next

Free class for people with dementia and their loved ones
Mystic Valley Aging Services offers wellness class at Malden Senior Center
R
esidents are invited to Resiliency
in Motion, a wellness class
presented by Mystic Valley Aging
Services (MVAS). This program offers
adapted fitness and shared
movement for people living with
dementia or Alzheimer’s disease,
together with their family caregivers.
MVAS developed Resiliency in
Motion to strengthen both physical
health and emotional well-being.
The six weekly sessions will be
led by a fitness professional alongside
dementia-trained support
staff from MVAS. Resiliency in Motion
is offered Thursdays, November
5 through December 17, at
noon, at the Malden Senior Center
(7 Washington St.). There is no cost
to attend and participants do not
need to live in Malden. To register,
contact Paula Buccilli at pbuccilli@
mves.org or 781-388-2319.
Each session will begin with

Richard “Dick Young. They are
doing the (deity of your choice)
work for an outstanding organization.
Apropos
of nothing... Richard,
you are still missed every single
day in the Parking Department.
As Peter Falk’s iconic TV character
Columbo would say, “Just
one more thing, sir — there are
eight million stories in the Naked
City, this will be one of them... After
reading the June 25 edition
of the Jewish Journal’s wonderful
tribute to the late, great Eddie
Andelman (written magnificently
by Rich Tenorio, btw) my
admiration and love for Eddie
and “The Sports Huddle was
rekindled once again. Must listen
radio back in the day every
Sunday night — my brother
Frankie and I had our trusty vintage
Stewart portable AM radio
with the tan faux leather casing
tuned in for three glorious hours
of mishigas. His famous all-night
session with Captain Lou Albano
is stuff of legend. Lou bragged
for three straight hours! About
his then 32-inch waist (LOL)!
How Sophia Loren chased him
for years! And had Celtic Nation
laughing out loud when he proclaimed
Larry Bird the cheapest
man at Daisey’s! My brief Eddie
Andelman encounter along
with childhood bestie Jimmy
Damiano and brother Frankie
was classic Eddie Andelman. It’s
1972 and Ross Tuxedo is located
on Exchange Street approximately
where Fitzgerald Park aka
Ed Emberley Park currently sits.
Eddie and his wife, the original
“Fabulous Judy, were making a
special promotional appearance
on our very own Exchange Street
at the go-to tuxedo destination
on the North Shore, “Ross Tuxedo.
We got in the door early with
a little help from the boss’ daughter
(Deby), who happens to be a
very close friend of ours. Fast forward
15 minutes and we started
yakking it up with Eddie. Jimmy
said to Eddie he is very unhappy
with the Sparky Lyle for Danny
Cater trade that recently transpired
between the Yanks and
the Sox. Eddie felt the same way
and all four of us yukked it up at
the expense of — once again
— the incompetent, amateurish
Yawkey front office. All of us became
fast friends, bonding over
the continued misery of the Boston
Red Sox aka the original Bad
News Bears! Insert smiley face.
Postscript: The first annual Billy
Settemio Memorial Bocce Tournament
was, not surprisingly,
a standing-room-only affair.
Of course it was! Billy had that
way of bringing people together,
and as his daughter Amanda
so beautifully reminded me, the
turnout was a testament to Billy’s
character and to the love he so
freely shared with others. There
was plenty of bocce, plenty of
laughs, plenty of booze — and
I’m sure, more than a few memories
of Billy floating around the
Italian American that day.
Mayor Gary Christenson and
Sal Gennetti announced that a
bench in Billy’s memory will be
included at the new Butch Gennetti
Park on Pearl Street as construction
moves forward. Somehow,
that just feels right. Don’t it?
Billy spent so much of his life in
and around this neighborhood
and that park, and now there’ll
be a place on Pearl Street where
Maldonia can sit a spell, take a
breather, tell an old Billy story
and remember the guy who always
seemed to have time for
everybody. And on a personal
note, I fully intend to be the
first one sitting on that bench
— Schlitz in hand — the beer of
separate warm-up activities for
caregivers and participants before
coming together for a joint
class designed to build balance,
strength, mobility and confidence.
This approach provides
caregivers with peer support
while creating opportunities for
shared connection. MVAS will
partner with Coach Julio Salado
of Fitness Foundry for Resiliency
in Motion. He is a certified trainer
with extensive experience in fitness
coaching for older adults. Resiliency
in Motion combines evidence-based
activity with person-centered
dementia support,
promoting healthy aging and social
engagement for people living
with dementia and those who
care for them.
This program is supported by a
grant from the I’m Still Here Foundation.
choice
for Billy and me back in
1975. I can’t think of a more fitting
way to christen it.
More on the bench and Butch
Gennetti Park as details become
available. Until then, raise a glass,
roll a bocce ball and (please) always
keep Billy’s memory alive.

SAVED BY THE ‘BELL’: Malden High holds off late surge to

nobody, not nohow! It took the
host Malden High Golden Tornado
football squad about 11 minutes
and 50 seconds of the fourth
quarter — which lasts exactly 12
minutes.
After building what looked like
a safe, 2-touchdown lead entering
the final quarter, Malden saw
the lead — and nearly the game
— slip away. Lowell Catholic dug
into its special teams bag of tricks
and scored two quick touchdowns.
Both of the scores were
aided and abetted by some exquisitely
executed onside kicks
following, one to start the fourth
quarter and second after the
Raiders had scored to cut the
Malden lead to 22-20 with about
eight minutes left to play.
Jayden McGuffie scored his
3rd TD for Malden’s eventual
game-winning points. Malden
did snap out of its second-half
nap with another great run by
Guess Who? Jayden McGuffie,
who busted free up the right sideline
in front of the Malden bench
for a 55-yard touchdown sprint,
his third TD of the night, to make
it 28-20, Malden with 4:28 left on
the clock.
It turned out to be the eventual
game-winning points. At that
point, Malden needed one big
stop to clinch its second win of
the season. That philanthropy
thing came back again, unfortunately.
Lowell
Catholic ate up most
of the rest of the clock in its final
drive of the night, using a miraculous
catch by Teddy Chege to set
up the Raiders with a first down
at Malden’s 20-yard line with 1:18
left to play. All that was left was
Janzel Trinidad’s TD run on the
last clocked play of the game and
#17 Bell’s last-second heroics.
This one was slow-paced early
with a scoreless first quarter,
as both teams traded turnovers.
It turned quickly into an “All-Malden
and “All-Jayden second
quarter. McGuffie scored on both

his first TD, for a 14-0 Tornado

Nathan Schonton then scored his
first touchdown of the year on a
34-yard completion from junior
Josh Bly to make it 20-0, and McGuffie’s
second conversion made
it 22-0, which stood as the halftime
score. The third quarter was
scoreless until Lowell Catholic’s
offense woke up from its slumber
to score late on a Trinidad 5-yard
run and Chege pass for two more
points and a 22-8 score.

EXTRA POINTS: Malden Head
Coach Witche Exilhomme was
pleased with the effort and the
win, but dissatisfied with some
of the execution, particularly on
special teams. “We played hard
and came up with some big plays
when we really needed them, on
both sides of the ball, Coach Exilhomme
said. “We needed Jayden

probably his best two-way game

Exilhomme said the leadership of

Granderson, 6-5, 330, had a solid

Dolphins make Malden Youth Baseball history with four
consecutive City Championships
Historic season ends with dramatic 5-1 victory in winner-take-all Championship Game
T
he Dolphins of Malden Youth
Baseball (MYB) celebrated the
organization’s 50th season in historic
fashion, accomplishing something
that had never been done
before in Malden Little League
baseball history. The Dolphins captured
their fourth consecutive City
Championship, becoming the first
Major Division team in the history
of Malden Little League and the
MYB to accomplish the remarkable
feat. Malden Little League, the
predecessor to today’s MYB, began
play in 1953. For more than seven
decades, teams have competed
for the coveted City Championship,
but no Major Division team
had ever won four titles in a row
— until this year’s Dolphins.
The Dolphins finished the regular
season in first place with an impressive
10-2 league record. Their
first-place finish earned them a
valuable bye in the opening round
of the double-elimination City Series
.They also played two games
against Revere Youth Baseball
teams, finishing with a 1-1 record.
Dodgers strike first
After the second-place Dodgers
defeated the Red Sox in the opening
game of the City Series, the
Dodgers faced the Dolphins in the
second game of the double-elimination
tournament. The Dodgers
came away with a hard-fought 2-0
victory, putting themselves in an
excellent position to capture the
championship. The victory propelled
the Dodgers into the finals,
where they would need only one
more win to claim the title.
Dodgers’ pitcher Simon Golden
was outstanding, shutting out the
Dolphins while allowing just one
hit: a single by Dolphins’ rookie
CJ Schuman. Golden recorded 12
strikeouts and allowed only three
walks.
For the Dolphins, Gio Cambriello
started on the mound and
pitched two scoreless innings, surrendering
three hits while striking
out three and walking one.
Nick Cook-Tran relieved Cambriello
and pitched four innings. He allowed
two runs on two hits while
striking out an impressive 10 batters
and walking two.
With the loss, the Dolphins faced

a daunting challenge: They would
have to win three consecutive
games to capture their fourth
straight City Championship. However,
the Dolphins were not ready
to surrender their title.
Dolphins eliminate Red Sox
Their next game was against a
young and talented Red Sox team.
Facing elimination, the Dolphins
responded with a convincing 11-1
victory, ending the Red Sox’ City
Series run after four innings. Logan
Salie turned in a dominant pitching
performance, going all four innings
while allowing just one run
on three hits. He struck out eight
and walked three.
Salie also led the Dolphins offensively,
collecting a double and
a single. Cook-Tran contributed a
double and a single. Ramon Ostalaza
collected two singles and
Gio Cambriello added a triple.
The victory eliminated the Red
Sox and set up a rematch with the
Dodgers. The Dodgers had been
resting while waiting for the winner
of the Dolphins-Red Sox game
and were now just one victory
away from claiming the championship.
Dolphins
rally to force
winner-take-all game
The rematch began with the
Dodgers taking an early 1-0 lead
after two innings. Dodgers scoring
came after Brayden Yin reached
base on an error, advanced to
third on a wild pitch and another
error, and eventually scored on a
groundout.
The Dolphins responded in the
third inning, taking a 2-1 lead. Ostalaza
singled, Cook-Tran was hit
by a pitch, and Cambriello delivered
a clutch single that drove in
both runners. The Dolphins added
another run in the fourth inning
when Ostalaza doubled. In
the fifth inning, the Dolphins extended
their lead with two more
runs, highlighted by a double from
Schuman.
The Dodgers refused to go quietly,
scoring once in both the
fourth and fifth innings. They added
another run in the sixth inning,
but the Dolphins held on for a
thrilling 5-4 victory. The comeback
win forced a winner-take-all championship
game for the City title.
Cook-Tran delivers in
Championship Game
With the championship on the
line, Brayden Yin took the mound
for the Dodgers and Nick CookTran
got the start for the Dolphins.
The Dodgers scored their only run
in the top of the first inning. From
then on, Cook-Tran took control.
The Dolphins pitcher mowed
down the Dodgers for most of
the game, allowing only three hits
over six innings while striking out
an incredible 12 batters and walking
just two.
The Dolphins offense answered
the early deficit and eventually
pulled away for a convincing 5-1
victory, securing the City ChamBASEBALL

Savvy Senior
by Jim Miller
Medicare and Moving:
What You Need to Know
Dear Savvy Senior,
I’m planning to move later this
year to be closer to my youngest son
and his family. I’ve lived in the same
state for decades, so I’m a little nervous
about how this might affect
my Medicare coverage. Will I need
to change plans or take any special
steps to avoid gaps?
--Relocating Rita
Dear Rita,
Great question. A move like this
is exciting, but it’s smart to think
ahead about how it could affect
your coverage. Whether your
Medicare is impacted – and what
you’ll need to do – depends on the
type of plan you have. Here’s what
to expect and steps to take before
and after your move.
Original Medicare
If you’re enrolled in original
Medicare (Part A and Part B),
you’re in the simplest situation.
Your coverage will go with you
anywhere in the United States, so
you won’t need to change your
plan when you move.
That said, you do need to update
your address so you don’t
miss important notices like your
Medicare Summary Notice or billing
statements. The easiest way to
do that is online through your “my
Social Security account at ssa.
gov/myaccount using the “My
Profile tab. If you don’t already
have an account, you can set one
up in just a few minutes. Or, you
can call Social Security at 800-7721213
and have them update it for
you.
Part D drug coverage
If you have original Medicare
along with a stand-alone Part D
drug plan, your move may require
a change. Drug plans are based on
where you live, so you’ll need to
contact your current plan to see if
it operates in your new state.
If it doesn’t, you’ll need to
choose a new plan that does.
You’re given a special enrollment
window to make this switch –
starting the month before your
move and lasting up to two full
months afterward. If you miss that
window, you may have to wait until
the next open enrollment period
(Oct. 15 to Dec. 7), and you
could face a late enrollment penalty
if you go without qualifying
drug coverage.
Advantage plans
Medicare Advantage plans are
also location-based, so a move almost
always means you’ll need to
take action. Check with your plan
to see if it serves your new area. If
it doesn’t, you’ll need to enroll in
a new Advantage plan or switch
to original Medicare.
Like Part D, you’ll have a special
enrollment period that begins the
month before you move and continues
for two months after. If you
move outside your plan’s service
area and don’t pick a new plan,
your current plan will eventually
disenroll you, and you’ll be placed
back into original Medicare.
To compare plans available in
your new location, visit medicare.
gov/plan-compare, which lets you
review both Advantage and Part
D options side by side.
Medigap
If you have original Medicare
and a Medigap policy, you generally
won’t need to switch plans
when you move. These policies
are standardized nationwide,
meaning a Plan G in one state offers
the same basic benefits in another.
Still,
you should notify your insurer
of your new address. And
keep in mind that while your coverage
stays the same, your premium
might change depending on
your new ZIP code.
One exception to be aware of is
Medicare Select, a type of Medigap
plan that uses provider networks.
If you have one of these
(they’re not very common), you
may need to switch plans when
you relocate.
A move doesn’t have to disrupt
your Medicare, but it pays to plan
ahead. Update your address, and
if you have a Part D or Medicare
Advantage plan, review your coverage
and make any needed
changes on time.

DUE ON SALE CLAUSE AND IRREVOCABLE TRUSTS
P
eople are often concerned
about a lender exercising the
“due on sale clause contained in
their mortgage allowing a lender
to call in the note and force a refinance
of the property at a much
higher interest rate. So many people
have been locked in at 2.75%
to 3.75% mortgage rates and they
certainly would not want to be
paying today’s mortgage rates
approximating 7.00%.
When trying to protect your
home from a nursing home, you
may very well decide to transfer it
to an irrevocable Trust to start the
five-year look back period. Five
years after the transfer, the home
will be protected as it would not
be considered a countable asset
for MassHealth purposes.
Under 12 U.S.C. Section 1701(j)3(d)(8),
a lender may not exercise
a due on sale clause when
a borrower transfers residential
real estate (with fewer than
5 dwelling units) into an “intervivos
Trust where the borrower is
and remains a beneficiary of the
Trust and rights of occupancy do
not change. An intervivos Trust is
simply a Trust you create during
your lifetime. An intervivos Trust
can be revocable or irrevocable.
Therefore, transferring your home
into an irrevocable Trust should
not lead to a lender exercising its
due on sale provision. Your interest
rate should be protected. We
often will ask the lender to approve
the transfer to the irrevocable
Trust by providing the lender
with a draft of the Trust.
I have yet to see a lender exercise
the due on sale clause when
someone transferred the home
to an irrevocable Trust when
the home was encumbered by
a mortgage. The Garn-St. Germain
federal law passed in 1982
was designed to protect lenders
by having federal law preempt
State law that might have
limited a lender’s right to exercise
the due on sale clause. Subsequently,
Congress enacted 12
U.S.C Section 1701j-3(d) which
carved out 9 exceptions where
lenders cannot exercise the due
on sale clause.
Exception number 8 applies to
intervivos Trusts. So long as the
Settlor of the irrevocable Trust
(who is also the borrower on the
original mortgage taken out),
pursuant to the terms of the Trust,
has the right of use, occupancy
and possession of the real estate
held in Trust and is the current income
beneficiary, Section (d)(8)
should protect against the due
on sale clause as this is federal law.
Consequently, you should not
have to reserve a life estate on the
deed to protect against the due
on sale clause. The downside to
reserving a life estate on the deed
is that if the home is subsequently
sold, the portion of the sale attributable
to the life estate interest
gets paid to the life tenant and is
then back on the table as a countable
asset for MassHealth eligibility
purposes. You can always cite
this federal statute to a loan officer
as many will not be familiar
with this law.

Murphy, Sr.
A longtime resident
of Wakefield
and formerly of
Melrose, passed
away peacefully
at home on Thursday,
September
24, 2026, just two
weeks shy of his 95th birthday.
Jim was born in Boston on October
7, 1931, one of three children of the late
James and Anna T. (Shea) Murphy. He
was raised and educated in Malden and
attended Cheverus School before serving
his country in the United States Army
during the Korean War. Following his honorable
discharge, Jim married his beloved
wife, Arlene Jay, on June 16, 1962, at St.
Mary’s Church in Melrose. Together, they
settled in Melrose, where they raised their
family of five children. Jim went on to work
as a Postal Clerk for the United States Postal
Service in Boston’s Back Bay, a position
he held for 35 years.
A proud Irishman and lifelong sports
fan, Jim had a special place in his heart
for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the
New York Yankees. His Catholic faith was
an important part of his life, and he was a
longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Church
in Melrose, and in more recent years St. Joseph’s
Church in Wakefield. Jim was also a
longtime member of the Melrose Knights
of Columbus, and the Melrose Elks Club.
He cherished the opportunity to return
to his family’s roots in Ireland, but there
was nowhere Jim was happier than at
home, surrounded by his family. He also
enjoyed listening to his favorite Irish music
and never lost his quick wit or wonderful
sense of humor. His outgoing personality
and easygoing nature made him
a welcome presence wherever he went.
Above all, Jim found his greatest happiness
in his family. He was a devoted
husband, father, and grandfather, who
took great pride in the family he and Arlene
built together. He will be lovingly remembered
for his unwavering faith, his
Irish heritage, and his deep love of family
that brought him happiness throughout
his life.
The family would like to extend their
heartfelt thanks to Jim’s caretaker, Nora,
for her compassionate care and caring
presence during his final days.
Jim was the beloved husband of the
late Arlene J. (Jay) Murphy with whom
he shared 41 years of marriage. Devoted
father of Mark Murphy of Salem, Colleen
Murphy and her husband Eric Taitano of
Melrose, Kerry Murphy and her husband
James D. Schena, Jr. of Stoneham, Jerry
Murphy of Mansfield, and the late James E.

Died on August

Monica, California.
She was born
on December 27,
1952, in Malden,

Patty's academic accomplishments
continued at Colgate University, where
she graduated magna cum laude and
Phi Beta Kappa in 1974. She later earned
a Master's in Finance from New York University
in 1978. Her studies also reflected
a lasting interest in French literature, an interest
that remained an important part of

After receiving her master's degree
from NYU in 1978, Patty began her professional
career in New York City as a
CPA with Peat Marwick Mitchell, where
she specialized in expatriate taxation. In
1984, she left the firm and established
a sole practice serving individuals in the
Bay Area. Her work reflected the strong
academic foundation and professional
discipline that marked her life from an
early age.
Patty was the mother of two daughters,
Gabby and Sofie, both of whom live
in Southern California. Sofie and Gabby
spent their early years in the Bay Area
and attended Trinity School in Menlo
Park. They later attended middle school
in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and continued
their education at Torrey Pines and
Concord Academy in Los Angeles. Gabby
graduated from Syracuse University, and
Sofie attended Mills College in Oakland.
A central part of Patty's life was the support
she gave to her daughters. She was
an avid supporter of their equestrian activities
and could often be found cheering
them on at local and national competitions.
She loved her daughters passionately,
and that devotion was a defining
part of her life.
Patty also maintained a lifelong love
of France and French culture. A self-described
Francophile, she returned to
France many times over the years to visit
and live with her adopted family, Josette
and Gile Maillet. That connection grew
from her college studies in French literature
and remained an enduring thread
throughout her life.
She also had two sisters, Jeannie and
Nancy, both of whom died before her. Her
brother, John, survives her and works for
Citgo in Texas.
Patricia Kiernan "PK" Applegate will
be remembered in the many places that
shaped her life: Malden, where her gifts
first became evident; New York, where her
professional career began; the Bay Area,
where she built her own practice; and
California, where much of her family life
centered. Her life was marked by scholarship,
professional accomplishment, steadfast
support for her daughters, and a lasting
attachment to the people and places
she held close.
