On Sept. 7, Mike Harrison
not only recorded a double
eagle, but registered one of
the rarest of shots when
he started his round at Bay
Pointe Resort and Golf Club
(Brandon, Miss.) with an ace
on the 225-yard par-4 opening
hole. Harrison is a member at
Bay Pointe and used his driver
for the albatross.
Jim Mire had a very
exciting round on Oct. 20 at
LaTour Golf Club in Mathews,
La. Mire (Houma, La.) recorded
a double eagle on the 452-yard
par-5 third hole. He is a
member at LaTour and
completed the hole with two
shots. After his 285-yard drive,
he holed out from 167 yards
with a 6-iron while playing
with Jerome Mire, Jack
Henderson, Monty Logue
and Raymond Richard. This
was Jim's first-ever albatross.
He has been playing golf for
22 years.

WHAT A YEAR!
Yancy Methvien accomplished the title
of World’s Most Avid Golfer by playing
an astounding 911 rounds of golf in 2019
By John Price
How many rounds did you play last year?
Fifty? One-hundred? Two-hundred?
On Planet Earth, there was only one person that
recorded 911 rounds and that accomplishment belongs to
Yancy Methvien.
The Springfield, La. native and Brookhaven, Miss.
resident just didn’t play because he had time on his hands.
The United States Coast Guard and Mississippi Air
National Guard Veteran had two primary goals when he
started this extremely ambitious goal about a year ago —
to raise awareness about his fellow veterans that suffer
from Post Traumatic Syndrome Disease (PTSD) and to
raise awareness for the Veteran Golfers Association.
The VGA has chapters in Louisiana and Mississippi. Both
chapters host tournaments for five months out of the year
and Veterans and their families can qualify for a prestigious
national tournament located as a top-flight golf facility (this
year’s National Tournament is at Trump Dural near Miami).
PTSD affects hundreds of thousands of veterans and sadly
an average of 22 veterans per day take their own lives.
Methvien, 43, plays in the VGA Louisiana and VGA
Mississippi events and also suffers from PTSD.As stressful
as the game of golf may be, he found that playing golf
allowed him to get his mind off the often heavy burdens of
everyday life and has been improving his PTSD symptoms.
He is hoping that fellow veterans suffering with the disease
perhaps take up the game of golf or play more golf in
order to get a positive impact on the disease like he has.
“You know I did this because I wanted people to feel
something about what I’m doing,” said Methvien.“I just
want anyone to know that is suffering with PTSD that you
are not alone.”
To drive home that point as much as he could,
Methvien wore golf shoes with a giant number ‘22’ on the
right foot and the phrase ‘You Are Not Alone’ for his
911th round, which was at his home course of Brookhaven
(Miss.) Country Club on Dec. 28.
Yancy Methvien (second from left) poses for a picture with
Bill Caldwell (far left), Andre Caldwell (second from right)
and Cody Nunn just before teeing off on Dec. 14 at Carter
Plantation in Springfield, La. The round was Methvien’s
789th of the year and set the World Record for most
rounds played in a calendar year. Methvien, who
finished with 911 rounds for the year, walked them all
and is a Springfield, La. native.
To accomplish an average of 2.5 rounds per day every
day for an entire year is anything but easy. Methvien had
some challenges like anyone would have but seemed to
take on all obstacles that came his way. He had to battle a
nagging hip injury daily that resulted from a dislocation
back when he was in college and then again in the military.
"There were occasions where I had to stop and stretch
or move certain ways so I didn't get the sharp pains,” he
recalled about the hip issue.“It is a daily issue and
something you just have to deal with. When you think

about it now, there were so many things that could have happen to derail
me like a bee sting or snake bite or something like that.”
One issue that did almost sideline Methvien was a staph infection early
on in his quest. At the end of February as the result of wearing a face shield
to block the wind, he got an infection inside his nose and on his neck that
required taking anti-biotics for just over a week to reduce
the swelling and pain.
Despite that potential set-back, Methvien just kept
charging on and racking up rounds in the winter when
most golfers take a break.
“If there is a test put in front of Yancy, he's going to pass
it,” said Cody Nunn, the VGA Louisiana Assistant Director
that carried Methvien’s bag for the record-breaking 879th
round at Carter Plantation on Dec. 14.“At the VGA, we
always say it is more than just a game and when you fully
connect the dots of what Yancy is doing, you will see what this record and
the VGA is all about. Me carrying his bag made this even sweeter. It was like
a higher being aligned all this together. It's a whole lot more than golf.”
Methvien served the United States until retiring in 2015 and has lots of
achievements including for his assignments for post 9/11 work. In fact, his
most productive day on the golf course was Sept. 11 when he played 91
holes (five 18-hole rounds plus a one hole) at Middlefork Country Club
(Meadville, La.), which is about 30 miles west of Brookhaven.
A total of 847 rounds were played at his home course of Brookhaven
Country Club, which is where his last round of 2019 was played on Dec. 28.

Yancy Methvien is presented with a
proclamation from the Mississippi
House of Representatives shortly after
finishing the final hole of his 911th
round at Brookhaven (Miss.) CC.

Lake Charles area
It is no secret that Lake Charles is the fastest growing
city in the state of Louisiana.
Since the addition of The Golden Nugget in 2014 and
the opening of The Country Club at the Golden Nugget
in 2015, the Lake Charles Metro Area has seen steady
growth in the
petrochemical,
gaming and
hospitality
industries.
The area’s golf
scene has also
dramatically
improved as the
city’s two high-end
casinos (L’Auberge
and Golden
Nugget) each have
top-flight resort
courses on
property.
The Country Club at The Golden Nugget
The Country Club at the Golden Nugget, Contraband
Bayou Golf Club — opened in 2005 and owned by
L’auberge Casino Resort — coupled with The National
Golf Club of Louisiana in nearby Westlake, Gray Plantation
(a charter member of the Louisiana Audubon Golf Trail)
and the public Mallard Cove Golf Course, Lake Charles
has a golf scene that that rivals much bigger cities in
Louisiana like New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
“It’s a great time to be a golfer in the Lake Charles
area. The area offers all different types of play from links
style to a tree-lined country club all at different price
points,” said Danny Engel, a 34-year-old Moss Bluff (city just
north of Lake Charles) resident that has been playing golf
for almost 24 years.“A new course is being built (the new
Mallard Cove Golf Course) and over in Westlake, they are
building a new clubhouse and the Korn Ferry Tour is
coming here so as you can see it a great time to be a
golfer in Southwest Louisiana.”
Lake Charles is the fifth largest city, but that ranking
may move up to fourth when the 2020 census is complete.
Behind New Orleans and Baton Rouge is Shreveport and
Lafayette in those rankings. Lake Charles does have one
private facility in Lake Charles Country Club, which has
been open since 1919.
The Country Club at Golden Nugget was named
one of Golf Digest’s Top 10 New Golf Courses in 2015.
The facility was also recently named as a host of a March
26-29 Korn Ferry Tour
stop in Lake Charles.The
Todd Eckenrode Design is
a par-72 resort layout
featuring spacious
fairways, but a back-tee
yardage of 7,007 yards.
There are only a few holes
where water doesn’t
come into play. A pair of
par-5s (Nos. 5 and 18) are
the toughest holes on the
course according to
handicap. Both nines start
out with easier holes as
the first hole is a
relatively short par-5 with two large hazard areas on the
right to deal with and the 10th hole is drivable par-4 with
an enormous fairway but a two-tiered green. Both holes
feature no water. This course is always well manicured and
there are discounts for players that stay at the Golden
Nugget, which is a few steps away from the resort’s pool
and lazy-river area.
Contraband Bayou Golf Club derives its name for
the body of water that runs on the north side of the
course and then east through Lake Charles. This resort
course borders The Country Club at the Golden Nugget.
In fact, the two courses share the Contraband Bayou Golf
Club driving range since there is no room for one next
door at Golden Nugget. The Tom Fazio par-71 design
captures south Louisiana perfectly and from the back tees
plays at 7,077 yards. The course itself is protected by lots
of water but lots of fun if you play the correct tee box.
This facility has garnered lots of national and regional
accolades. There are reduced rates if you stay at the
L’auberge Casino Resort.

Gray Plantation Golf Club
This year marks the 10th anniversary of The National Golf Club of Louisiana, which is the only golf course in
Westlake, a city just west of Lake Charles. The public par-72 layout is challenging but fair and plays anywhere from
5,297 yards to 6,946 yards depending on which one of the five tee-box complexes you play. The new clubhouse is
expected to open in the fall of 2020 and it will feature a 140-seat restaurant, pro shop, offices and a back patio
overlooking the 18th green.
The course’s front nine starts and ends with a par-5.According to NGCL Head Professional Joey Wancewicz, the
fourth hole — a par-4 that plays between 302-394 yards — might be the toughest hole in Calcasieu Parish. There is
water left and right, the fairway isn’t very wide and there are bunkers protecting the green. On the back nine, the
facility has its version of Amen Corner with Nos. 14-16.The last hole of that stretch being the toughest hole
handicap wise on the course. The course features 14 lakes and 65 bunkers.
Gray Plantation Golf Club opened in 1999 and is the only Lake Charles course part of the Louisiana Audubon Golf
Trail, Gray Plantation has gotten national accolades for its par-72 layout, which plays at just over 7,000 from the tips.
The course features pine trees, 60 acres of lakes and marshlands. The Rocky Roquemore design has water coming
into play on 12 holes and features over 90 bunkers. The facility
is known for its visually appealing par-3 holes. Two of the
course’s four par-3s feature island greens.The raised-plantation
clubhouse is a perfect backdrop for the 18th hole.
Mallard Cove Golf Course is Lake Charles’ only municipal
course and was opened in 1976. It has played host to a few
professional tournaments on the Adams Golf Tour Series a
handful of years ago. Located on Chennault AirPark and very
convenient to the I-310 loop, Mallard Cove is known for its
great affordability especially on its twilight rates.
The oldest course in Lake Charles is Lake Charles
Mallard Cove Golf Course
Country Club, which celebrated its 100th year in existence last
year. LCCC is located just down the road from Gray Plantation
and its a tight course that is not as long as the modern courses.
Despite those attributes, the facility still attracts members and guests alike as the Louisiana Golf Association had its
annual four-ball championship here. The course is always well-conditioned and has some great views being situated
on Prien Lake.

in North Mississippi
By John Price
During a week-long trip to North Mississippi with a
bunch of golf writers in the fall, we visited five distinct and
different courses. While there are lots of options, the five
facilities we played I would all put on a must-play list while
in this part of the state.
We started off at
Cherokee Valley Golf Club
(Olive Branch), which is a
family owned and operated
public course that is fun and
challenging. CVGC features
11 lakes and 52 bunkers on
gentle rolling hills. On the
surface that may seem
intimidating, but with wide
fairways and clean roughs, the
tract feels more like a resort
course. From the tips, the
course plays at 6,751 yards
and can also play as short as 4,422 from the forward tees.
There is a three-tiered driving range, two practice putting
greens and a chipping green. The lodge-style clubhouse has
views of Nos. 9 and 18 from the snack bar or the banquet
hall, which comes in handy for tournaments.
Next up was a trip to North Creek Golf Club
The dual green at
North Creek Golf Club
(Southaven). The links-style course has lots of mounding
and the same owner as Wedgewood Golf Club in nearby
Olive Branch, but the courses are vastly different as
Wedgewood features wooded terrain.
North Creek plays between 6,433 and 4,559 yards
depending on which of the four sets of tees you select.
There is trouble to be found if your club selection if off
or if you find the above-average amount of water on the
course. This facility is known for its unique dual green,
which features a cart tunnel that passes underneath the
green. The course has played host to the NGA Hooters
Tour, the John Daly Make-A-Wish Tournament and many
of the Mississippi and Tennessee junior-tour events. North
Creek also features an island 18th green.
Our third stop was in Oxford at the Ole Miss Golf
Course. This is not your typical college course. The Ole
Miss Golf Course features a tract of just over 7,000 yards
from the tips and 4,849 yards from the forward tees.
Located a couple of miles from the Ole Miss campus,
the public course is carved through a natural environment
coupled with some interesting shot challenges as well as
elevation change common to this part of the state. The
course conditioning is
always top notch as well
the customer service.
Our final two playing
venues (River Bend Links
and Tunica National Golf
and Tennis Club) were in
Robinsonville.
Both are uniquely
different and compliment
each other in more ways
than just being eight miles
apart. River Bend Links is
right on the Mississippi
River and can play at 6,900
yards from the tips. It features a great mix of lakes,
bunkers (grass and sand) and strategically placed mounds.
The Scottish link-style course is known as a a field of
dunes. The former cotton field is also home to numerous
wildlife like deer, fox and turkey.
Tunica National is a championship resort course that
plays as long as 7,204 yards or as short as 5,180 yards
depending on which of the five tees you select.
Most of the holes have generous landing areas and
some of the unique features of this course are holes along
side cotton fields and sand native areas you can drive your
cart through. The back-nine features the only two par-3s
in the first four holes and finishing four holes with a par-4,
a par-5 and two par-4s.
The Golf Academy at Tunica National is one the
best training and practice areas in the state. The huge
clubhouse features four clay tennis courts in a
climate-controlled area.

U.S. Kids Golf Gulf Coast Tour Director Jimmy Headrick
received another award this fall.
The Slidell, La. resident was named 2019 Tour Director
of the Year by U.S. Kids Golf, which has 78 local tours
in the United States. Last year’s World Championship
in Pinehurst, N.C. had 1,550 participants representing
52 countries, marking the largest junior golf championship
ever held.
Locally, Headrick took over the Gulf Coast Tour in 2015 when it was on the break of
folding (and called the Southeast Louisiana Tour) because of lack of participation. Having over
40 years of experience on the Gulf Coast, he has built the local tour to one of the top ones in
the country in just four short years. The Gulf Coast Tour includes a three-state area of Louisiana, Mississippi and
Alabama.
In addition to a U.S. Kids Tour Director, Headrick is also on the staff at Diamondhead (Miss.) Country Club and also
the golf coach at Holy Cross High School in New Orleans. He has been a PGA member since 1979 and won numerous
awards from the Gulf States PGA Section. In 2018, U.S. Kids Golf honored Headrick with the National Award for Junior

Methvien, who is not-anti cart,
walked all of his rounds last year for
a grand total of 4,701.4 miles, which is
more miles than if you walked from
New Orleans to Anchorage,Alaska.
There were less than 15 days
Methvien didn’t play golf in 2019. His
best score during the record-playing
feat was a 63. He is the son of Alice
Monroe and Wayne Methvien. Both of
them were on hand to witness his
record-breaking round of 879 and the
final round of 911.
Long before Yancy went through
six pairs of golf shoes and over 600
golf balls, he had to get a plan
together for nutrition/body
maintenance. In 2017, he weighed 203
pounds and got down to 181 on Jan.
1, 2019. During round 911, he weighed
146.8 pounds. Methvien credits John
Paul ‘JP’ Guidry for staying relatively
injury-free and getting the right things
in his body. Guidry, a doctor of
Physical Therapy, is the owner and
founder of Barbells and Birdies and
Guidry Golf and Sport.
“I lost 20 pounds really fast at the
beginning and then found out I may
have underestimated this part of the
challenge especially in the summertime,”
Methvien said.“JP Guidry
helped out and recommended a great
plan for me.The winter was much
better as I got in a few cheat days.”
During his feat of playing 16,398
holes in a year, Methvien had three
double eagles, but no hole-in-ones. He
came within an inch of one 35 times
with 20 of those times coming in the
months of September and October.
He started playing golf in the later
part of 2006.
“What I did is overwhelming
sometimes when I stop and think
about it, but it was just another
mission to me,” Yancy said.“To see
emotion in people's faces when
shaking their hand was special to me.
The heavy lifting is done so now I can
make myself more accessible.”
Methvien has lots of goals for
Yancy Methvien poses for a picture with some of his VGA buddies on the 18th
green at Carter Plantation (Springfield, La.) just after playing his then-record
879th round in 2019.
Brookhaven
Country Club,
which was
established in
1935, has
honored
Methvien with a
plaque near the
first tee honoring
his 911 rounds in
2019. A nice touch for someone that
spent so much time on that course in
a 365-day span and will likely play a lot
more rounds there in the future.
2020 and beyond, but right now they
don’t include setting any more world
records anytime soon.
“I can’t wait to get out of bed an
not feeling like I’ve been run over by a
truck,” he said a couple of days after
playing his 911th round.“I want to do
lots of things that continue bringing
awareness to PTSD and how golf can
help with that as well as promoting
and playing in more VGA events. To be
honest, I've just barely got my toes in
the water in regards the awareness
that can be brought to just those two
things.”
