According to a Facebook page created to spread the word about the rally, the rents at 33 Park St., a 1925 brick building with a mix of 36 studio and one-bedroom apartments, have jumped by nearly 50 percent. Rally organizers say studios which were renting for $1,000 a month are now being offered for $1,500 and many long-term tenants have been driven out by the increases. Tenants who are staying put are taking a stand with the rally, which is backed by City Life/Vida Urbana, a Jamaica Plain–based nonprofit organization with a history of promoting tenants’ rights and preventing housing displacement by negotiating with landlords. United Properties manages properties owned by Tsitos, who, according to his LinkedIn page, is a real estate investor with 800 rental units in Malden, Lynn, Everett, Medford and Burlington. The week before Encore officially opened its doors on June 23, the casino held three test nights under the watchful eye of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), which monitored the practice runs to ensure compliance with state laws and gaming standards and regulations. Encore not only passed the MGC’s tests, the casino took in $669,000 during the three-night trial run. Encore now plans to divide that money among six local nonprofit organizations: Malden’s Bread of Life, the Malden YMCA, Everett Community Schools, the Mystic River Watershed Association, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston and the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts. Encore will cut checks for $111,503 for each of the six organizations. “Giving back to the communities in which we live and work is a large part of who we are as a company,” said Encore Boston Harbor President Robert DeSalvio in a press release announcing the donations. “We are humbled that our friends and families came out in droves to support the opening of Encore Boston Harbor and helped us create an opportunity to make a meaningful impact with these worthy local organizations.” Wynn Resorts, which operates Encore Boston Harbor, has highlighted its support for surrounding communities, its charitable giving and projects and goals to benefit the region. Over the next 15 years, Encore will pay $574 million to its host and surrounding communities with $485 million going to Everett, $32 million pledged to Boston and $57 million to be shared among Malden, Medford, Somerville, Chelsea and Cambridge. Wynn has also committed to donating $10 million to local civic organizations over the next four years. While a lot of money is going out to support communities and nonprofit organizations, Encore is also taking in a lot of cash from gamblers and guests. Encore reported earnings of nearly $16.8 million during its first week in business. According to Card Player, a popular online poker magazine, $9.12 million of Encore’s earnings came from gamblers feeding the casino’s 3,150 slot machines. Losses at the gaming tables brought in the remaining $7.67 million. Municipalities and nonprofit organizations were not the only ones to benefit from Encore’s successful opening. J Malden Center has started preleasing some of the project’s 320 apartments, and the openings of the center’s retail shops and Malden’s new City Hall have target dates within the next six months. Across the street, a huge banner on the side of the building has been telling Malden for about 18 months that EXCHANGE was coming first in 2018, then in 2019. And while that change won’t arrive this year, it will, at least be underway soon. Mayor Gary Christenson fielded questions on both J Malden Center and 200 Exchange Street during the Malden Live Q&A with city officials last week. Christenson told viewers who watched the meeting that was streamed on the city’s Facebook page that Malden’s new City Hall will be on the right of the site of the old City Hall. “We just got our first tour of the building, and I think the entire community will be proud of what’s happening up there,” said Christenson. The first tenants are expected at the end of the summer around the same time that pedestrians will be able to start using some of the new sidewalks. “Retailers will start moving in sometime in the fall, and City Hall is aiming for a December or January 2020 opening. From all accounts, we’re very pleased with what we’re seeing up, and we can’t wait for you to be a part of it,” Christenson told viewers. In May, Jefferson Apartment Group announced that Landsmith, a locally owned gourmet coffee shop, and Soul City Yoga, which is based just down the road in Lynn, were the first two businesses to lease some of the center’s available retail space. According to the J Malden Center website, the buildings are not open yet for tours but prospective tenants can look at floor plans, prices and the long list of amenities that include a saltwater pool, a solarium, outdoor kitchens, gaming areas, a fitness center and a rooftop deck with views of the Boston skyline. Rents for the first available studios are around $2,300 a month while one-bedroom apartments are priced from $2,535 to $2,700. Two-bedroom units run from $3,430 to $4,070 a month. This talk will explore the life story of Harriet Hanson Robinson, a suffragist and activist who once lived in Malden. While in Lowell, Harriet Robinson contributed to The Lowell Offering, a textile workers’ magazine. Yet it was during her years in Malden that Robinson became more connected to a wider world of abolitionists, woman’s rights advocates, and intellectuals. At 23 Harriet married William Stevens Robinson, a journalist and antislavery activist, and moved to Malden. Robinson was the first woman to speak before the Select Committee on Woman Suffrage in Congress. She and her daughter, Harriet Lucy Shattuck, organized the National Women’s Suffrage Association of Massachusetts. This talk will put Robinson’s life in historical context, providing insight into the broader social movements that surrounded her and the particular challenges she faced as a woman who reinvented herself several times. Jason Lewis and State Reps. Paul Brodeur, Paul Donato and Steven Ultrino are pleased that the recently passed state budget includes major investments in the City of Malden and its fiscal priorities. Under this budget, Malden will receive a total of $51,206,223 in Chapter 70 education funding this year, an increase of $1,908,454 over the last year’s budget. Crucially, the budget fully funds the state’s Special Education Circuit Breaker program, meaning that the program will reimburse districts for high special education costs up to the full 75 percent, as stipulated in statute. Acknowledging the unique budgetary impacts of charter school enrollment and tuition reimbursement on municipal budgets, the state budget allocates $115 million in order to ensure that the state meets its obligations to towns and cities to offset the fiscal impact of charter schools. For the first time in nearly 20 years, the budget will increase the Commonwealth’s contribution into the Community Preservation Act, which will ensure that over $36 million more will be distributed to projects in Malden and all across the Commonwealth and help raise the state’s match up to 30 percent for investments in open space, affordable housing and historic preservation. It would then take a two-thirds vote of the House and Senate to override any vetoes. The conference committee version was hammered out after the House and Senate each approved different budgets. The package raises spending by $1.6 billion, or 4 percent over fiscal 2019. “The strategic investments that are made in this budget reflect the shared priorities of the Legislature,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chair Aaron Michlewitz (D-Boston). “By incorporating the input from our colleagues, this document has been made stronger. I am proud that key services in the areas of education, housing, homelessness and the environment will see significant funding increases in this budget.” “This consensus fiscal year 2020 budget strikes a balance between maintaining fiscal responsibility and making targeted investments that benefit our commonwealth’s economic well-being,” said Senate Ways and Means Chair Mike Rodrigues (D-Westport). “I was the sole vote against the acceptance of the conference committee report because I was concerned the report’s language on offshore wind procurement left key terms undefined,” said Sen. Mark Pacheco (D-Taunton). “I brought my concerns to the Senate floor and I hope the administration was listening. The conference committee report also did not contain language for the reauthorization of simulcasting, which will end at the close of business on July 31st. Charlie Baker’s amendments to a House and Senate-passed bill that would allow public sector unions to charge non-members for the cost of some services and representation. The bill was filed as a response to the Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that public employees cannot be forced to pay fees or dues to a union to which he or she does not belong. Freedom of speech advocates hailed the decision while labor advocates said it was an unjust attack on unions. In his message to the Legislature, Baker said his amendments would protect the privacy rights of public employees and correct statutory inconsistencies. “Although a portion of this bill addresses issues raised in the Janus decision … other provisions in the bill go beyond what the Janus decision required,” said Baker in a message to the Legislature. “These provisions would jeopardize the privacy rights of public employees and prevent the commonwealth and public sector unions from negotiating certain terms and conditions of employment.” “The House and Senate engaged in a serious debate regarding the substance of the governor’s amendments, and ultimately decided on a bipartisan basis to overwhelmingly support language which did not include them,” said Rep. Paul Brodeur (D-Melrose). “Ensuring that we do everything we can in Massachusetts to protect workers’ rights continues to be a top priority. I’m eager to have these worker protections become law.“ “The governor tried to strike a balance,” said Paul Craney, spokesman for the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance which was in favor of the amendments.
