Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
it seems a long time since we have seen a proper match. This is
officially our 124th anniversary and although we’ve only played here
at Gorton Street for the last 74 years we’ve always had our home in
this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Mini’s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and I’m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, £40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects, that we hope will be complete
by Christmas.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. We’d not be able to operate without their contributions. I can’t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
‘Walking Rugby’ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those who’d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.
Once again, welcome to the club and please enjoy your day. Our clubhouse
bar is CAMRA award-winning and (for those over the age of 18)
I’m informed has a fine selection of match refreshment, especially
with our new friends from the First Chop Brewery.

A warm welcome to all our supporters and visitors at Eccles RFC today. We’re now
into the second month of the new season and all our Mens, Ladies, Colts, Junior
and Minis teams are in the full swing of competitive league games and cup
competitions each weekend. Although the long suspension of activity during the
Covid lockdown feels like a distant memory, around the Lancashire Rugby
Community it still appears that Senior Rugby is still struggling to recover and find
its feet with many players not returning to their previous regular weekly commitment.
Here at Eccles, with enormous effort behind the scenes, we’ve succeeded
so far in fielding two Mens teams (and occasionally three) to fulfil our Mens
Rugby fixtures. This is not the case for all clubs in this region. Our original opponents
today would have been Burnley RUFC who, as a result of player loss leaving
them with a squad unable to compete, have been demoted from the ADM
Premier to the ADM 1st Division to take over similarly demoted Broughton’s
fixtures.
So, as a replacement for the Burnley fixture, I am delighted that our visitors from
across the border have been able to accept our invitation, at very short notice, for
this international friendly fixture!
"Helo a chroeso i chwaraewyr a swyddogion Clwb Rygbi Wrecsam"
Wrexham RFC will arrive by bus and I assume they’ll be looking forward to a good
drink after the match! So, it’s just as well we have a brewery next door! Perfectly
timed, this weekend our clubhouse bar is hosting a 'Tap Take Over' for our sponsor
First Chop. Although I predict it’ll be lively post match Saturday evening in the
club I trust there will be some beer remaining on Sunday when our Ladies
welcome Sale 1861 to Gorton Street and our Junior Colts will be entertaining
Clitheroe. I hope everyone enjoys the variety of First Chop ales on offer and, as
always, I encourage you to share your opinions and photos on social media.
The coronavirus pandemic has hit community rugby hard and many clubs across
Britain are suffering from missing names from team sheets and facing uncertain
prospects. Here at Eccles we will continue to believe in cultivating our own Homegrown
talent and look to our well established thriving mini & junior section to
provide our future 1XV players. This would not be possible of course without the
continued dedicated commitment of our volunteers. Donating your time to
support the club's growth can be very rewarding so if you’d like to get involved and
put something back in to your community please do step forward.
Whichever team you’re supporting this weekend, I hope you enjoy your match
experience at Eccles and you keep returning throughout the season. All things
prosper with effort. Let’s get stuck in!

Hello and a very warm welcome to everyone visiting Gorton Street
this afternoon but especially to our travelling opposition and their
supporters from Wrexham RFC and Sandbach RUFC.
Today will see a mixed bag of Eccles RFC players representing the
club against a Wrexham team in a very similar position, in a
cross-boarder friendly after Eccles’s 1XV fixture against Burnley
was scrapped in unfortunate circumstances following Burnley’s
withdrawal from the league due to a lack of players. I do wish Burnley
all the best in their rebuilding process and hope to see them
back competing very soon. I’m looking forward to seeing what the
Welshmen bring to the Gorton Street turf in this ‘international’ and
enjoying a chat over a pint after the match.
We also welcome Sandbach 3s from down the M56 today to take
on Darren Thomasson’s Men. Everyone at the club is delighted to
see a 3XV team being reformed, albeit on a monthly basis at present
due to player availability. Our 3s will be looking for a better
outcome after their last run out saw a defeat to local neighbours
Trafford MV.

For the Weekend 15th to 17th October we will be celebrating local brewing with
the support of our club sponsor First Chop, who are based just a few hundred
yards from our ground on Gorton Street, Eccles.
Saturday 16th – 'Tap Takeover'
All hand pumps on our bar will be dedicated to beers from our club sponsor,
First Chop. This will offer a wide range of beer types, some of which are not
normally available on a hand pull. The proposed line up will be as follows:
1. CAL - a west coast IPA dry hopped with citra, a lovely pine filled beer with hints
of grapefruit and a refreshing bitter finish.
2. ACE - a malt forward lager with assertive bitterness from the finest German
noble hops, rounded out with subtle sweetness from the Vienna malt.
3. Oola – cherry stout-a lovely creamy oatmeal stout but with the added red
berry and cherry aroma from fresh cherry puree, decadent and very moreish.
4. AVA – a traditional golden ale with a continental lager kick. A mashup of the
finest Marris Otter pale malts from the UK and Slovenian Bobek Hops cultivated
in Alpine waters to create a real thirst quencher for those late summer days.
5. USA - a west coast IPA; pine, resinous, off caramel colour with subtle sweet
caramel flavours.
6. Cascade (single hop) - Earthy grapefruit vibes and a traditional English hop
aroma.
7. JAM - a lovely pale ale with slight caramel sweetness, packed full of fruity
American hops giving intense fresh mango flavours.
Please note : The more you drink of the first 4 beers the quicker the remaining
3 beers will be brought on line. So drink up and support the club!
Sunday 17th – Eccles Jnr Colts v Clitheroe (KO 12:30pm), Eccles Ladies v Sale
(KO 2pm)
With Junior fixtures in the morning, a mid-day Colts game (v Clitheroe KO
12:30pm) and Ladies game (v Sale KO 2pm) in the afternoon, the club bar will
be open to offer eager thirsty Sunday supporters the opportunity to try the
remaining First Chop Beers.
Look out for special promotions to be held on the day.

Spotlight on U11s
Match report:
The whole of the u11s family from players, coaches and parents were
looking forward to our first game of the season to Preston Grasshoppers.
The first quarter of the match was evenly contested. Both sets of lads
using the ball well in attack as well as defending their try line. Eccles just
needed a pep talk at the interval to remind the players of the good things
they had learnt in training at the breakdown and to be more proactive.
The second quarter saw Eccles pulling ahead in the game for the very
first time in the match with some good line breaks from Seb and Max.
Mackenzie’s power proved a vital weapon to the Eccles attack in this
quarter.
During the third quarter of the match we began to tire due to not having
any subs to bring on as a fresh pair of legs. The lads tackled frantically
and competed for every breakdown. Vincenzo and Leo for their size did
very well in the rucks. Jesse’s tackling was superb. In this quarter the
Hoppers pulled back to even.
Mark Plumbridge rallied the lads during the last break before the last
quarter. The lads gave everything they possibly could in the 10 mins.
Caleb drew two defenders before off loading in a tackle which created a
try for Max. In the dying minutes we defended our try line magnificently
and forced a mistake from Preston. The game was won by Eccles by a
single try. A special mention to Theo who played his very first game of
rugby and was brilliant. Both Theo and Seb won parents player of the
match.
Thank you to all the players, spectators and coaches from both teams to
help create a fantastic spectacle and enjoyable experience for everyone
involved.
Our U11s team is growing and improving each week. If anyone knows of
any players who would love to give rugby a try, please get in touch with
coach Pietro.

Eccles RFC Senior Colts line up with Fleetwood RFC Senior Colts
before their Lancashire Cup fixture at Fleetwood on 26-09-2021
Eccles Senior Colts September Review
At last! A return to Rugby!
After our covid ‘year off’ the U18s were delighted to finally get a chance
to play competitive Colts Rugby.
The season this year is split into 2 parts, an initial 5 match Prelim
League, followed by a 10 match home & away conference. Clubs will be
seeded into conferences based on their Preliminary league performance.
We also have county and league cup competitions to look
forward to.
We started well with a great home win against a strong Sale team and
came back to snatch a late win against Rossendale with 3 tries in the
last 9 minutes. The only blot on our record so far was an away defeat at
Kirkby Lonsdale where we were only 13 against a squad of 22. But at
least the lads got the full Rugby Travel Experience – the less said about
the coach trip back the better….
We also started our Lancashire Cup campaign with a 19 - 57 away win at
Fleetwood. Next round will be a home fixture against Littleborough in a
month’s time which I’m sure will be a far tougher test.
However, the season has been overshadowed by the tragic loss of Gail
Russell, mother to our stalwart prop, Harvey. Gail was a fixture on the
Eccles touchline, normally with her husband Craig and Harvey’s twin
brothers, Daniel & Robert. Gail was always keen to help the team and
nothing was too much trouble. We never wanted for half time oranges
with Gail and she was always first to volunteer for any task. Gail sadly
passed away on the 9th of September.
Report by Andy Connell, Eccles U18 Colts Manager.

Our ladies section welcome newly promoted Sale 1861 to Gorton street for their
first home game of the season. Sale come off the back of a promotion winning
season last time out and have made a great start to their league campaign, they
will prove a real test for our ladies. After a disappointing start against a very
experienced Manchester side. The ladies are hoping that home advantage and
a bolstered squad serves as the final pieces of the puzzle for our first win of the
season.
After two very physical weeks of training lots has been learnt and taught, as our
squad continues to swell the pool of knowledge, talent and experience deepens.
It is testament to our club and our outstanding Womens and Girls section that
the numbers of female players is growing in all sections. Eccles RFC has always
championed our ladies section treating them with the same respect as a first
team men's section this faith and forward thinking has allowed us to grow to a
centre for women's rugby in Greater Manchester.
A special mention this week must go to our recently injured fly half and all round
good guy Georgia Cunliffe. Georgia is a product of our junior section and has
been playing in the 1XV since her 17th birthday. She is a constant source of
good humour and creativity, a real asset to any team and we are very lucky to
have her. Unfortunately she is likely to spend quite some time on the sidelines,
but we want her to know that her 1XV shirt is hung up on the peg waiting for her
whenever she is ready to return. Get well soon G.
If you are ready to take the next step up in your rugby career, ready to try something
new or have been looking at those old boots thinking I've still got a bit in
me then come down to Eccles RFC because Eccles Ladies is the place for you.

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so we’re within the RFU guidelines, and
we’re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

The DofE award is the world’s
leading youth achievement award,
giving 14-24 year olds who wish to
take up the challenge, the opportunity
to strive to be the best they
can be and gain the confidence to
believe anything they put their
mind to is possible.
The programme takes between
one and four years to complete
and is recognised and valued by
employers and universities alike.
Eccles RFC were the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the DofE
award programme to its players.
The scheme was established in
honour of Christopher Tickle who
was posthumously awarded the
DofE Gold Award by HRH Prince
Phillip in 2010. Since 2011, the
club’s young people have achieved
over 100 Bronze awards, over 60
Silver awards and 48 prestigious
Gold Awards – a testament to the
hard work and dedication of the
participants and the Eccles team
of volunteer leaders.
The DofE programme is a journey
of adventure and discovery that
compliments the ethos of Rugby
by rewarding teamwork, endeavour,
physical activity, learning
skills and community volunteering.
To achieve an award a young
person must show persistence,
commitment, progress and
personal development
over
a
period of time. Every activity must
be successfully completed and
assessed. Activities take a minimum
of one hour a week over a
set period of time, so they can be

Eccles RFC 1950
Eccles Rugby Football Club was re-established 124 years ago in 1897 (following
the great Northern Union schism of 1895) and has now worn its iconic Blue and
White hooped shirt for 100 years. The hoops were first adopted in the aftermath
of WWI, when the club had to rebuild with many of its new recruits playing with
injuries suffered in the trenches. In its early days before the First World War,
Eccles RFC played in green shirts and we believe this switch in colours was a
tribute to fallen comrades in the Salford Pals Battalions. Overcoming adversity
and recovering from enforced breaks in activity have been a feature of our
club’s history. Between the wars the club lead a nomadic existence, playing at
numerous grounds in the district before moving to our home here at at Gorton
Street in 1948 when our changing facilities and clubhouse were a pair of
second-hand Army Huts.
According to our club records, it would appear that Eccles' first encounter with
Wrexham did not go according to plan, as the match scheduled for 25th February,
1956 was cancelled, as as were all fixtures for that month. February 1956
was outstandingly cold in England and Wales, one of the coldest ever on record,
with the mean temperature for the month below freezing, apparently falling to
below -15 deg. C. in several places, persistent easterly winds, heavy snowfall,
the sea freezing and cakes of ice piling up on the beach!
1957/57 Season - 29th Sept. 1XV lost 6-14 Away at Wrexham, 2XV Home
won 22-6, 3XV Away lost 12-4. 23rd Feb 1957 1XV Home won 8-0, 3XV
Home won 12-3.
1957/58 Season - 28th Sept. 1XV won Away at Wrexham.
1958/59 Season - 27th Sept. 1XV lost Away lost 8-26, 2XV Home won 12-9.
21st March 1XV Home won 12- 3.
1960/61 Season - 4th March 1XV Away lost 0-28, 2XV Home won.
The fixtures between Eccles and Wrexham seem to end here, although there
may have been matches that were arranged that were not recorded. From what
we can see the two sides seem to be pretty evenly matched back then.

Eccles Rugby Football Club encourage
Spectators to:
• Act as a positive role model to all.
• Behave with dignity and generosity.
• Support your club’s efforts to uphold its reputation.
• Respect Rugby’s values. Discipline and Sportsmanship
define our game.
• Respect the match officials' decisions, even if they
appear to make a mistake. Remember, they are volunteers
and without them there would be no game.
• Encourage all players irrespective of their ability.
Never ridicule a player, regardless of the shirt they
wear.
• Appreciate good performance and achievement
from all players, irrespective of their team.
• Acknowledge effort and endeavour rather than the
desire to 'win at all cost'.
• Support the players. Shout ‘for’ them not ‘at’ them.
• Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials
or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour
affects the players and referee’s performance and
attitude.
• Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the
competitors.
Remember children play rugby for their own
enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
