Revere Fire Dept. receives $2.5 million FEMA grant
to hire 12 firefighters
Advocate Staff Report
T
his week FEMA awarded
nearly $4 million in grant
funding for fi re departments
and other fi rst responder organizations
in Massachusetts.
Revere was the biggest recipient
of the FEMA grants, with
a $2.5 million award that will
allow the Revere Fire Department
to hire 12 new fi refi ghters.
City and state leaders, as
well as Senator Ed Markey,
were on hand at the Revere
Fire Headquarters on Monday
afternoon to help celebrate
the award.
ā€œThese types of awards in
communities like Revere do
not go unnoticed,ā€ said Mayor
Patrick Keefe. ā€œThe Revere Fire
Department will have the opportunity
to add 12 fi refi ghters
to its ranks, strengthening our
capacity to respond quickly
and eff ectively when residents
need us most. Investments in
public safety have always been
a key priority of mine, and just
in the past month, we are graduating
11 new fi refi ghters from
the academy.ā€
Keefe said the city has consistently
sought to increase
its ranks in the fire department.
In recent years, with the
FEMA SAFER grant and other
grants, he said, the city has
been able to reopen and fully
staff its Point of Pines fi re
station and increase staffi ng
across the city.
ā€œYou need all the help, you
need the equipment, you
need all the assistance that is
possible,ā€ Markey told the fi refi
ghters.
Markey thanked Revere Fire
Chief James Cullen and the department
for their dedication
and commitment to public service.
ā€œYou keep the community
of Revere safe every single day,
and that is why I am so excited
to announce the $2.5 million in
federal funding for the Revere
Fire Department,ā€ said Markey.
ā€œYou are one of the very
few communities in the country
to receive this funding, because
we know that you need
it, and that Revere will use it
in ways to keep this city safer.ā€
Markey also thanked State
Senator Lydia Edwards for her
role in helping to secure the
grant funding.
Cullen said it was a monumental
day for the city and the
fi re department. ā€œI am incredibly
proud to stand before you
and accept the Staffi ng for Adequate
Fire and Emergency Response,
or SAFER grant, as it is
more commonly known,ā€ said
Cullen. ā€œThis funding is a true
game changer for our department,
directly translating into
more fi refi ghters on the job every
day, and enhanced safety
for our members who serve
the citizens of the city of Revere.
An achievement like this
does not happen in a vacuum;
it takes immense dedication
and advocacy, and we
are profoundly grateful for the
leadership that has made this
possible.ā€
Revere Fire Captain Kevin
Oā€™Hara said the support and
advocacy of Keefe, Markey and
Edwards is helping the department
reach its staffi ng goals.
ā€œI am here not just to celebrate,
but also to thank all of
our hard workers in the Revere
Fire Department,ā€ said
Edwards. ā€œI want you to know
that an investment of this size
that adds to the personnel of
this department isnā€™t just for
Revere. I am keenly aware of
the mutual aid that this department
provides to the region,
so investing here is also
investing in helping out folks
in Winthrop, Chelsea, and East
Boston.ā€

Guarino-Sawaya said one
possibility would be to issue
eligible seniors a placard identifying
them as participants in
the program. The cityā€™s parking
and planning departments
could then determine how
such a system would work
through the proposed feasibility
study.
Planning and Community
Development Chief Tom
Skwierawski said conducting
a study would be a reasonable
fi rst step. He noted that
ā€œFirefi ghters and other fi rst
responders are everyday heroes,
helping their neighbors
and communities when they
need it most,ā€ said FEMA Administrator
Cameron Hamilton.
ā€œThrough this grant funding,
FEMA is building the capability
of these local organizations
to respond to disasters and
emergencies. By empowering
fire departments to get the
staff , training and equipment

the resilience of American
communities nationwide.ā€
neighboring Everett recently
implemented a similar program
and could provide Revere
with useful information
about its impact.
ā€œI think our peers next door
in Everett just started doing
this, and I think we are in
many respects pretty similar
with them in regard to population
and percentage of seniors
representing the total population,ā€
Skwierawski said.
He noted that Everett has
more parking meters than
Revere, making the comparison
imperfect, but said the
FEMA administered these

city could learn from Everettā€™s
experience after the program
has been in place for a year.
Skwierawski also said Revere
may benefi t from waiting before
immediately adopting
a new policy so offi cials can
evaluate the impact of the relatively
new 15-minute parking
spaces on Broadway and Shirley
Avenue.
ā€œIf we were to have a year of
that program under our belt
and understand how it is affecting
our revenues, and then
in addition to that in that time,
we could look at Everett and
see how it is impacting their
revenues ā€¦ I think it is worth
exploring,ā€ Skwierawski said.
He added that the city and
Parking Department want to
consider the concerns of senior
residents while also examining
the potential fi nancial and administrative
issues involved in
implementing the program.
The feasibility study could
provide the city with a clearer
picture of how a senior parking
program might operate
and what impact it could have
on parking revenue and local
businesses.

Revere High senior expands free tutoring opportunities
through Connect Me
Student-led chapter pairs young learners with high school and college tutors while giving RHS students
a fl exible way to earn community service hours
Special to Th e Advocate
W
hen Revere High School senior
Ejlal Mohammedsalih
launched a local chapter of Connect
Me last year, she saw an opportunity
to address two needs
at once: younger students looking
for extra academic support
and high school students searching
for meaningful, fl exible ways
to give back. Since then, the program
has steadily grown, connecting
students with free virtual
tutoring while giving Revere
High students a chance to earn
community service hours, develop
leadership skills and build
confidence as mentors. Connect
Me is an international nonprofi
t organization that provides
free virtual tutoring to students
in kindergarten through eighth
grade. Mohammedsalih established
the Revere High chapter
in March 2025 after recognizing
that traditional volunteer opportunities
do not always fi t into studentsā€™
busy schedules.
ā€œI felt like a lot of the high
school students at Revere High
wanted to earn community service
hours, but for certain reasons
they werenā€™t able to,ā€ Mohammedsalih
said. ā€œMaybe they
had stuff going on after school.ā€
At the same time, she knew
there were younger students
who could benefit from additional
academic support. Creating
a Connect Me chapter at
Ejlal Mohammedsalih
RHS Senior
RHS, she said, off ered a way to
bring those two groups together.
ā€œStarting a chapter at my high
school would allow students
not only to get community service
hours, but also the students
that needed tutoring to get that,ā€
she said.
The model is designed to be
simple and flexible. Tutoring
takes place entirely through
Zoom, typically for one hour
each week. Rather than requiring
tutors to be available at a specifi c
time or location, students can arrange
sessions around their own
schedules.
That flexibility has helped
the RHS chapter grow. Mohammedsalih
said the program began
last year with about 20 participants
and has since expanded
to about 30 to 40, including
about 20 tutors from Revere
High School.
Tutoring is not limited to one
subject. Younger students indicate
the subject and grade level
in which they need assistance,
and prospective tutors identify
the areas in which they feel
most comfortable helping. A
middle school student seeking
help in math, for example, can be
matched with a tutor who has indicated
that math is one of their
strengths. The same approach
can be used for science, history
and other subjects, allowing
the program to respond to the
individual needs of each student.
While the immediate goal is
to provide academic assistance,
Mohammedsalih said she has
also watched the experience
benefi t the students doing the
tutoring. ā€œI think itā€™s really cool
just to see growth happen,ā€ she
said. ā€œIā€™ve seen students ā€” like
the high school students that I
work with ā€” grow themselves
through tutoring, like become
more confi dent in themselves.ā€
She said younger students have
also benefited academically,
with some seeing their grades
improve after receiving tutoring.
Although Mohammedsalihā€™s
chapter is centered at Revere
High School, Connect Me itself
has a much broader reach. Tutors
throughout the organization include
high school and early college
students, with participants
located around the world. Now,
Mohammedsalih hopes to make
more Revere families aware that
the resource is available.
Her work establishing the RHS
chapter has largely focused on
recruiting high school students
to serve as tutors. The next step
is reaching more families at Revereā€™s
elementary and middle
schools whose children may
need additional academic support.
ā€œI also do want to let the
younger students in elementary
schools and middle schools
in Revere who need extra help
be able to get this help through
Connect Me,ā€ she said.
For families, one of the programā€™s
most important features
is its cost: There isnā€™t one. Mohammedsalih
emphasized that
Connect Me tutoring is completely
free, removing a potential
barrier for families who may
want additional academic support
for their children but cannot
or do not want to pay for private
tutoring. ā€œItā€™s a completely free
program, so itā€™s a really great opportunity
and resource that I feel
like a lot of students should take
advantage of,ā€ she said, particularly
for students who need additional
help beyond what they
are able to receive during the
school day.
As a senior, Mohammedsalih is
also thinking about what comes
next ā€” both for herself and for
the program she built at Revere
High. She plans to attend a fouryear
college or university in Massachusetts
and study biochemistry.
Before graduating, however,
she wants to ensure the RHS
Connect Me chapter continues
after she leaves.
Mohammedsalih is already
working with current chapter
members to identify a sophomore
or junior who could step
into a leadership role and continue
growing the program.
That succession would allow the
chapter to become an ongoing
student-led resource at RHS ā€”
one in which older students help
younger students succeed while
gaining valuable experience
themselves. For Mohammedsalih,
that combination has been
at the heart of Connect Me from
the beginning: making tutoring
more accessible for younger students
while giving high school
students a practical way to serve
their community.
RHS students interested in becoming
tutors can learn more
through the RHS Connect Me
chapter. The program off ers fl exible
scheduling, community service
hours and leadership experience.
Families of students in
grades K-8 can also explore Connect
Me as a free option for additional
academic support. More
information about the Revere
High chapter is available on Instagram

The Patriots went on the

33-0, behind a dominant
rushing attack and a defense
that kept the Red Devils off
the scoreboard. The Patriots
snapped a two-game losing
streak.
Jose Fuentes rushed for
131 yards and two touchdowns,
while Sergio Peguero

80 yards and a touchdown
as the trio combined for 339
rushing yards and all fi ve Revere

The performance was especially
encouraging considR

the injuries Revere has
dealt with during the early
portion of the season.
ā€œGreat bounce back especially
considering all injuries,ā€
Revere coach Lou Cicatelli
said. ā€œBoys were locked in and
played a great game.ā€
The defense did its part with
the shutout. Elijah Kearns led
the Patriots with eight tackles
and fi ve assists. Cesar Herrara
forced a fumble that David
Cruz recovered, helping set up
another Fuentes touchdown.
ā€œGround game was great,
and the defense played great

Sofi a Correa Muriel scored
off an assist from Amy Lopez in
the victory, while Emily Torres

throughout the lineup.
The Patriots then fell to Everett,
3-1. Bella Coral scored Revereā€™s

Rumney Marsh tour showcases restoration
along abandoned highway in Saugus
(Editorā€™s Note: The following
info is from an article submitted
by the Rumney Marsh Conservancy
highlighting the groupā€™s
tour last weekend in Saugus.)
R
umney Marsh Conservancy
brought the public
onto the abandoned Interstate
95 embankment on Oct.
3 for a free public tour exploring
the highwayā€™s history, decades
of salt marsh restoration
and possibilities for the
marshā€™s future.
ā€œWhen Rumney Marsh was
designated an Area of Critical
Environmental Concern in
1988, removing the embankment
was a clearly stated goal,ā€
said Matt Hallihan, the Conservancyā€™s
founder and president.
ā€œRestoration isnā€™t just theoretical.
Itā€™s already happened
here. We wanted people to
see the results fi rsthand and
understand why that progress
should continue.ā€
Participants listen as retired EPA scientist Ed Reiner discusses salt marsh restoration during
Rumney Marsh Conservancyā€™s public tour of the former I-95 embankment in Saugus on Oct. 3.
(Courtesy photo of Rumney Marsh Conservancy)
Built in the late 1960s for a
highway abandoned in 1972,
the embankment still cuts
through Rumney Marsh. Large
sections have been removed
to restore salt marsh, but substantial
portions remain.
To the Conservancyā€™s knowledge,
this was the fi rst public
tour devoted specifically
to showcasing the completed
restoration areas along the
abandoned I-95 embankment,
bringing decades of progress
into public view. The tour was
led by Ed Reiner, who retired
from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency in 2025 after
nearly 50 years. Now a volunteer
environmental advisor
to the Conservancy, Reiner
spent decades advocating for
Rumney Marsh restoration and
brought fi rsthand knowledge
of the projects and decisions
that shaped the landscape.
Participants used restoration
map brochures to connect
the sites along the route
with the broader marsh. Reiner
discussed areas where highway
fi ll has been removed and
explained why understanding
tidal movement is essential to
evaluating future restoration.
The tour drew curious residents,
local ecologists and
regulators, including longtime
Saugus residents visiting the
marsh for the fi rst time. The
Conservancy plans to build
on that community interest
through public education,
stewardship, monitoring and
advocacy.
Rumney Marsh Conservancy
is a nonprofi t organization
dedicated to protecting, restoring,
monitoring and advocating
for Rumney Marsh and
educating the public about
its ecological and historical
importance. Its work focuses
on the Rumney Marsh Area of
Critical Environmental Concern
in Revere, Saugus and
Lynn. Learn more at rumneymarshma.org.
