Our family was blessed with Kate coming to stay with us over the Christmas break. Kate’s Mom, Dad and younger brother (5th grade) live in Ukraine and could not afford to bring her home. At that time the war had not started and Kate shared the hardships her family goes through living in Ukraine. Her Father is a doctor and her Mother has a good job as well but they still live without a lot of comforts that we take for granted in the States. Once the war broke out, Kate’s family traveled to the Poland border but her Dad was not allowed to leave and has continued to help the ill and injured in his capacity as a Doctor thru all the battles going on thru Ukraine. He is 3 hours from the border and talks with Kate as much as he can to help her know he is safe. Kate’s Mom and brother were able to meet up with her Uncle and are secure in Switzerland. Kate struggles with the devastation of her Country and the friends she has back home. Bluefield State College recently held a fundraiser to help Kate share her struggles and to let the community understand how they can help. As you have all been watching and seeing the Ukraine people defend their Country against Russia, there are an overwhelming amount of places that you can donate to help. How Come Back Alive Helps Our fund supports the Armed Forces of Ukraine through financing purely defense initiatives. Since 2014 we have provided around 1000 thermal imagers and over 250 UAVs. In addition to the material support, we increased technological capabilities of the Army through providing 1,500 tablets with Armor software aimed at stopping the artillery. Come Back Alive also organizes trainings to equip our military with crucial skills. In 2015 we launched trainings for medical workers, artillerists, snipers, minesweepers, and defense analysts. After coming back from the front line, our military members have access to sport rehabilitation and veteran business opportunities. Our organization does not use funds for purchasing arms. Our mission is limited to supplying technology, trainings, and accouterments to help save lives of Ukrainians and help our warriors defend Ukraine. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) echoed NAHB concerns that rising lumber prices are hurting housing affordability and the Biden administration needs to act swiftly to enter into negotiations with Canada on a new softwood lumber trade agreement. In an exchange with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on the Biden administration’s 2022 trade policy agenda, Kern cited NAHB data in stating that the “most recent (lumber price) spikes have added more than $18,500 to the price of an average new single-family home and nearly $8,000 to the price of a multifamily home. These volatile price increases are pricing families out of the American dream of owning a home and beginning to affect the economic practicality for investment in new projects.” While questioning Ambassador Tai, Hern added that “this is obviously having an increasingly negative impact on housing affordability and we still don’t have a softwood lumber agreement with Canada. As best as we can tell, we aren’t even at the negotiating table on this and despite many assurances that both sides are eager to resolve this problem. Could you explain what the progress is and how we are going to resolve this critical issue?” Ambassador Tai responded as follows: “Our dispute with Canada over softwood lumber and how they produce theirs has been one of these longstanding problems in our relationship and it goes to a fundamental incompatibility between our economic systems not unlike what we have with dairy. So this is an issue that is baked into our close and important relationship with Canada economically over time.” Tai added that “it’s our view that our trade remedy laws are working as they should. Nevertheless, in recognizing the disruptions in the market, I frequently discuss softwood lumber issues with my Canadian counterpart. We as an administration are open to resolving our differences with Canada over softwood lumber. But that does require both of us to come to the table with a willingness to address the underlying difficulties in the compatibility of our systems. That door is always open, but it does takes two to tango.” Rep.
