MGH Care Van brings free
primary, preventive health
services to Revere residents
By Barbara Taormina
T
he Commission on Disabilities
hosted guest speaker
Jared Craig, Mobil Operations
Manager of Massachusetts
General Hospital’s Community
Care Van, a mobile health
program. Craig presented an
overview of the program’s mission
and the free and low-cost
services it brings to Revere.
The MGH Care Van is part
of the three-van fleet, with
Brigham and Women’s Hospital
and Salem Hospital also
operating vans. The program
was launched during COVID to
provide vaccines and care to
those having trouble accessing
care. Since then, it has expanded
to off er free primary
and preventive care to communities
stretching from Mattapan
to Salem.
“We focus on areas where
there have been historic diffi -
culties getting access to care,”
Craig told the commission.
Craig repeatedly stressed
that the van is free — “What
we provide is free to anyone
with or without insurance,”
he said, adding that the goal
is to bridge the gap between
not having a primary care
health provider to having primary
care.
Craig explained that the van’s
multilingual and multicultural
staff focuses on screening
and educating residents about
chronic conditions, such as
high blood pressure and diabetes.
The van also dispenses
blood pressure cuff s and glucose
monitors to help people
with selfcare. The van devotes
several days a week to assisting
people with substance abuse
disorders, said Craig, explaining
that the ultimate goal is to
get them into rehab.
The van also provides care
for pregnant women and postMGH

In addition to 48 one-, twoand
three-bedroom units, the
building will also have eight
group living units on a lower
level. Site work is underway on
the seven-story building and
construction is expected to be
completed in fall, 2027.
According to Councillor-atLarge
Joanne McKenna, the
project has been in the works
for three or four years. “Three
years ago, they asked me if I
would be in favor of the project
and I said yes, it’s aff ordable

who wasn’t sure why the project

According to Craig, the van
operates 20 to 24 hours a
week, although that number
can jump as high as 90 hours
during the summer. Last year,
6,200 people sought and received
care from the vans.
The vans have reached 40,000

turn to the new building once
it is completed. NSCS collaborated
with The Neighborhood
Developers to redevelop the
site to provide additional affordable
homes. The existing
building is being prepared for
demolition, and the project is
scheduled to be completed in
September 2027.
The new building will support
NSCS with community
space for the organization
to provide supportive services
and classes for community
members.
The project received a $23
million tax-exempt bond from
MassDevelopment, along with
$21 million in federal low-income
housing tax credits,
among other public funding
sources.
The 110 Ocean Ave. site is
less than a mile south of Wonderland
and about one-third
of a mile south of the Revere
Beach T station. The new building
will stand immediately next
to two other residential developments
that opened in 2021:
the 200-unit, two-building Ryder
Revere Beach and the 75unit
900 building. Both were
built on vacant lots.
But Criag said van staff often
move indoors; for example, to
the lobby of a housing authority
building. “If we need to, we
will bring everything off the
van,” said Craig. “It’s not an issue
to us.”
“It’s great to see how much
this increases accessibility for
people with disabilities at the
housing authority,” said DeCicco.
“Different
services are out
there but getting to people is
where the gap is,” said Commission
Vice Chair Pauline Perno.
Craig said Revere and Chelsea
are where the van and services
are most needed. “We
want to meet people where
they are at,” he said.
“The state of healthcare and
accessing what you need is
horrific; you need someone
helping you,” said Perno. “I applaud
the work that being
done because, God knows, it
needs to be done.”
Perno and commission
member Jason Barone said
communication is essential.
Perno noted she had no idea
the care vans existed until
her daughter began working
on one. They asked about
van schedules and locations.
Craig said the van schedules
are posted on the Massachusetts
General Brigham website
and fl yers are available in
multiple languages. He said he
would send dates and times
the van would be in Revere to
the Commission and the Public
Health Offi ce.

season and qualifi ed the quartet
for the 2026 Nike Indoor
Nationals in New York City.
They are also likely to qualify
for the 2026 New Balance
Indoor Nationals in Boston
pending review.
Coach David Fleming
praised the group’s execution.
“The guys ran incredibly
fast,” Fleming said. “Oliver got
us off to a blazing start. As
usual, he turned on the jets at
about 30-40 meters and got us
the early lead. Joey ran a great
second leg. You could see how
determined he was to keep
us in front. Edwin, who keeps
fi nding new gears, was able to
extend the lead and hand off
to Jeremy. And, when Jeremy
gets the baton with a lead, it’s
all over. It was just a matter
of how fast. I could see with
about 100 meters to go that
it would be a fast time. With
a big lead, it’s a credit to Jeremy
that he pushed all the way
through the finish line. The
combined eff ort helped them
take almost two and a half seconds
off their record.
They work so well together,
according to the coach,
and everyone knows their
role. “They take pride in their
smooth handoffs,” Fleming
said. “I can’t wait to see how
they do at the All-State Meet.”
