2020VISION
A WHOLE “NEW” FASHION FRONT I ER
0 3 .
Lately we’ve been looking to the past for ways to deal with the present.
Those of us who were too busy for family meals pre-corona-virus are now
cooking at home more than ever. We’re scheduling long, leisurely phone
calls and doing things like writing letters – yes, with a pen and paper and
everything! There’s something comforting about these slower, deliberately
low-tech habits, perhaps because they help us feel connected to the
past. These are things that our parents and grandparents did — and the
activities feel a lot more stimulating than a mindless Instagram scroll [98]
.
This time has made us all exponentially more environmentally conscious,
economically aware, and motivated to employ more sustainable living
habits in our day-to-day lives. With all of this information, and time to
ponder it, we have been given a unique opportunity to create the dialogue,
and really reflect our morals in what we wear. One major way we’re taking
action is through shopping consignment.
0 6 .
Revisiting fashion from decades ago reminds us of a time before the
pandemic, before our lives were so depending on technology and when
fashion was a smaller, slower industry. This reminiscent mindset has lit
the fuse for the recent Vintage and on-line secondhand fashion market
explosion. More emphasis is being put on the classics. Pieces that have
longevity and prove their quality in craftsmanship. As we look ahead—
though many of us will still be in quarantine—we’re feeling inspired by
vintage fashion photos and outfits that seem to have more staying power
than flashy disposable trends. Not only does this prove the very clear shift to
a more sustainable and conscious approach to fashion consumption in the
present, but the resurgence of a “make do and mend” mentality is sure to
reflect the relevance of our choices and over time continue to evolve into
heritage uniquely ours in the seasons to come.

This season we’ve been looking to the past for inspiration more than ever. Everything from drive-in movie
theaters to oversized mod sunglasses are making a comeback. Among that list we also have high-rise retro
styles in all forms and the hottest item yet, the “house dress”. Summer dresses, or “house dresses” dating back
to the bygone era is a look that lasts generations and when paired with boots & booties of all heights it will be
the season’s biggest trend.
These looks are not only both flattering and universally comfortable to wear, but clean and timeless. With
creative re-purposing and impressive panache, a combination of modern and elegant vintage elements
flow seamlessly together evoking a bold, beautiful, soft energy that will captivate any room. Silks float like
wind driven clouds over a wide open prairie, while reinvigorated floral motifs radiate with an iconic vibrant
aesthetic.
It’s about being sexy in a modern way, owning your power, and staying fresh and forever sophisticated no
matter where life’s little turns take you. From a living-room office to a picnic at the park, or a backyard BBQ
to backstage with the band. bright & breezy, casual & cozy, must-have bold patterns, florals and colors emit a
surge of energy and positivity, giving this collection a little something for everyone. Mix and match, let your
creativity get the best of you. There are no rules. It’s all possible.
“Some years are for growing; but this one, this one’s for blooming.”
– Lauren M. Garcia [99]

Thanks to the bad-ass boss babes on the rise and taking the reins all over the country today it’s no surprise
that this “Rockabilly-esque” look is making a serious comeback– be it in the form of cars, clothes or kicks,
this fresh fun take on the rebel rocker look isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Known as the roots of what we
know as modern rock and roll, Rockabilly continues to be a pivotal influence on culture today. She’s bringing
pieces that hearken to times of the wild west with a sharp spur of chic— no lasso necessary.
From denim, leather, wool and fringe galore to prints, studs, velvets and piping, there is nothing vanilla about
this Classy Chassis. Crafting knitwear and free-spirited prints nod to the OG music festival set, while intricate
puzzle pieces of patchwork and embroidery create kaleidoscope patterns halfway between psychedelic revere
and arts and crafts practicality [100]
.
Though this trend is dripping in western influence, one can also revisit the early ‘90s – when the little fringed
skirt goes to town with the right slouchy jacket for the modern cowgirl. What was once just weekend clothes,
are now just as appropriate in Connecticut as they are in Montana, every day of the week.
With sparkle, spunk, sophistication and swagger, she is ready and rearing to let her individuality radiate.

It is during the toughest of economic and troubled times, that we innately seek refuge in a place at which
we are most familiar. Moving away from extravagance and toward well-being. We feel a desire to revert to a
better time, a better place, to reconnect. This is our comfort zone, safe, secure, sure that old glory will endure,
and our faith in God and Country will always see us through. Secure in each other, and our Families. It’s
dependable, it’s something we all know, most grew up with; this is our heart, and the heart of our nation.
This present day “new” Americana, rendered in the most perfect earth tones, familiar fabrics and imperfect
finishes evoke a sense of deeply rooted craft and tradition– with an emotional appeal that will last a lifetime.
Re-purposing old and pairing it with modern pieces give classic looks a breath of fresh air.
Sure and strong in detail, clean lines and natural colorways harmonize giving utility fashion a fresh
sophisticated look. Patchwork, fleece, fringe, canvas, corduroy woven and rich embroidery all thrive, but with
continued seasonless fashion and tight budgets, denim and leather will be the season’s biggest stapled pairing.

What is it about the 60’s folk era that feels so relevant today? The lasting appeal in both music and genre lie
in tradition. Folk is about the stories not the story teller, endlessly recycling tunes and themes, lyrics and, yes,
looks: the leather jacket, the twill gilet, the denim shirt. These clothes nod to something hardscrabble but
honest: “authenticity”, that trait we crave even while sensing its fundamental slipperiness. Culture is not pure
invention, but quotation, a copy of a copy of a copy, a riff, on a riff on a riff, stretching infinitely forward and
infinitely back[101]
.
With details like dry-finish tin cloth, worsted wool and traction-tread heels, this style is the antithesis of
throwaway cheap chic, which makes them particularly attractive when dollars are short. They are nostalgic,
playing into an insatiable appetite for all things retro. During an interview with Vogue, Lucas Nelson’s (son of
Willie Nelson) description of his Dad’s style is truly the essence of what this trend’s about: “I grew up watching
my dad and Neil Young get dressed for performances, and for every day, and there was always a subtle grace
to their style. They’re about looking good but they also care about being themselves and really honoring that.”
“I put on the cowboy boots for special occasions,” He says.
“ I do like to give a shit about what I look like.”

Sturdy black or faded blue jeans, denim jackets, plain shirts and t-shirts, leather jacket, and western boots are

Welcoming back the ten-gallon hats and glinting gold chains; the gaucho ponchos and bolero ties, the Aloha
shirts, silk button-downs, and Ranger-style belts—all of it—are a far cry from the baseball-cap-and-T-shirt
aesthetic that’s dominated the country music or western scene in recent years.
The modern cowboy has fascinated designers long before this current phase, and we’re not just talking Ralph
Lauren’s beloved double denim. The rockabilly movement in the mid-1950s was influenced by the debonair,
peacocking style of Hollywood’s cowboys at the time[104]
and has trickled into mainstream street style today.
Artists across the spectrum from Hip-hip performers like Lil Nas X (featured in image - 86) and Post Malone
(featured in image - 95), to EDM DJ’s like Diplo (featured in image - 87), and of course, from the root of it all,
todays country artists have put their very own 2020 spin on the classic Western look.
Midland (featured in image - 85, 92, 96), a present day country music trio has fully embraced this revolutionary
retro aestheticthey say is so deeply rooted in their genre’s fashionable history: “Country musicians were the
first gangster-looking group of performers. Those guys were dripping in diamonds and gold. They
informed the R&B guys and Motown guys—all that flash came out of Nashville” [105]
.
It’s time to buck up your street style, bronco.
