Since 2013, NOC*NSF and the GEO schools have been organising twice-yearly workshops and clinics, in which we ask a former or current Olympic or Paralympic athlete to share their knowledge with the students. In my view, this represents the ultimate embodiment of the Olympic spirit. I visited a great many of these workshops and clinics over the past few years. Wow! Of course they haven’t heard of the big names of Dutch sport. But that medal says it all. It takes their breath away, just like it takes my breath away to see the passion, the single-mindedness and focus with which the young students, a lot of them from Rio’s slums, take part in these Olympic clinics. For the first time in the history of the Netherlands Olympic Committee we’re not just coming to ‘take something’ from the city in which the Games are to be organised, but we’re also coming here to ‘bring something’ of our own. We’re doing so with the aid of a large number of athletes, every one of whom was happy to take part in these GEO events. Under the general motto of ‘sharing knowledge is multiplying knowledge’, hundreds of children have learned to get just a little bit better at table tennis, judo, volleyball, swimming, korfball, basketball, or running. And they have drawn inspiration from the fantastic stories of the Dutch Olympic and Paralympic athletes, such as Hinkelien Schreuder and Inge Huitzing, who understand better than most that with sport you can win much more than medals. I watched the children stare in disbelief as the Paralympic champion Marlou van Rhijn changed out of her prostheses and put on her blades for the training session she was to give - blades on which she demonstrated incredible sprinting times on the athletics course of the GEO school Santa Teresa. It was simply marvellous to watch from a distance and to see her encouraging and inspiring the children, firing them up with her enthusiasm. conhecimento com as crianças. Most of their students, who are aged 11 to 15, also come from the favelas. Their daily routine includes a full programme of classes, including at least two hours’ sport, and three meals a day. ‘Some of the kids serve themselves three helpings at breakfast,’ observed Herbert Wolff, Head of International Affairs at NOC*NSF, who was closely involved in the project from the outset. ‘You could see that it came from real hunger. That affected me deeply.’ Origins In October 2009, after the IOC had assigned the 2016 Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro, a delegation from the city visited Beijing to learn how the Chinese had tackled the 2008 Games. During this trip the delegation also learned about China’s combination of sport and education at primary schools. The Brazilians were not familiar with this concept, but determined to introduce it in Rio to get young people involved in future Olympic and Paralympic Games. Three years later, in 2012, the first of the new ginásios opened in the district of Santa Teresa. Many of the students come from Rio’s slums. ‘Most of them see no future, no prospect of improving their lives,’ says Wolff. ‘Sadly, they come to believe that they cannot change their lives, that everything will always stay the same. But the GEO schools change everything for them.’ Teaching life skills is one of the main points of emphasis in the education programme, which is provided free of charge. Sport provides an opportunity to apply these skills. The students were selected on the basis of tests in arithmetic and language skills and on the basis of their passion – rather than pure talent – for sport. The GEO project does not focus on training future top athletes but on the personal development of the students, to improve their prospects of success in society. The Dutch connection NOC*NSF and the Dutch Consulate in Rio have been involved in the GEO project since 2012. In the first place, because both parties believe in the powerful potential of combining sport and education. For instance, Elisabeth Willeboordse’s foundation Judo2Inspire gave GEO students an opportunity to visit the Netherlands, and Trinko Keen collected material to boost the development of table tennis at the schools. On the flight back from Rio de Janeiro to Amsterdam, Elisabeth Willeboordse said to herself: ‘I must get involved with this.’ Olympic bronze medal winner and former European titleholder had been to Rio before, of course: Brazil is a great judo nation. But in May 2013 she had seen a different side of the city – the children from the favelas. She was the first in what would be turn out to be a long line of present and past Dutch top athletes who visited the GEO project in Rio at NOC*NSF’s request. She went there to talk about her own sporting dreams and to give a couple of clinics. ‘They gave me an amazing reception. They thought it was fantastic that we were visiting their school. They wanted to touch me and to see and hold my medal. Such a small thing, and you should see those big eyes ... Well, small – that bronze medal from the 2008 Beijing Games is worth a lot to me, of course, but hundreds of people have won gold medals. It was inspiring to see Dutch Olympic medallists giving workshops for days on end to children from the favelas, mostly out of sight of the cameras – to watch them getting the best out of these children and boosting their confidence. I shall never forget the sight of Paralympic athlete Marlou van Rhijn sitting in front of the young athletes – many of whom still view disability as a taboo subject – and changing her prostheses for blades as if it was the most natural thing in the world, enabling the children to get used to the idea. I want to compliment NOC*NSF for not choosing the path of least resistance. The two researchers describe the chosen form of education as a key factor in the children’s development. The clinics given by past and present Dutch top athletes have made an important additional contribution. Looise and Ruijs, research students at the department of Management and Organisational Sciences (USBO), travelled to Rio de Janeiro in the spring of 2015 in the wake of the wheelchair basketball players Inge Huitzing and Irene Sloof, visited the GEO schools, interviewed past and present pupils at the school, and spoke to many other people involved in the project. This resulted in a research paper entitled ‘Een sportieve Nederlandse bijdrage aan de GEO-scholen in Rio de Janeiro’ (‘A sporting Dutch contribution to the GEO schools in Rio de Janeiro’). The top athletes’ visits have an enormous impact, as the research findings make abundantly plain. Meeting the Olympic and Paralympic athletes in person and hearing their inspiring stories about how they reached the top, not to mention having an opportunity to touch an Olympic medal, made success tangible for the pupils. At these moments the top athletes also become role models, who can show students how to turn their dreams into reality. Looise and Ruijs spoke to numerous pupils, and without exception they had loved the experience and said it really motivated them. And those pupils in particular still see the judoka and swimmer as role models to this day. Without such permanent personal contacts, however, the long-term impact on the pupils is limited. Looise and Ruijs therefore recommend providing clinics for a limited number of pupils, which would make it possible to establish more intensive contact with the participants. One could also choose to remain at one school for a longer period of time instead of going to a different school every day. Looise and Ruijs say that it is about choosing whether to reach a large number of 58 > GEO project / friendship, respect and excellence pupils in one go or to have a greater impact in the longer term. It emerges clearly from interviews with a number of former students that they are extremely grateful for the opportunities that the GEO schooling has given them. An unforgettable time, they say. Some have done so well in their sport that they have won scholarships to private schools, while others are now attending mainstream state schools. Those schools, the students say, do not recognise the importance of sport, which they experience as a definite loss. ‘Sport shows you the difference between right and wrong, teaches you the importance of keeping to the rules and respecting each other.
