Sen. Lewis supports passage of major climate bill
A
mid alarming reports by
the UN’s Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change,
Senator Jason Lewis joined his
colleagues in the Massachusetts
Senate on April 14 to pass
a major climate bill, An Act driving
climate policy forward. The
bill addresses climate change in
three primary areas – clean energy,
transportation and buildings
– with the aim of achieving
the Commonwealth’s ambitious
goal of reaching net-zero
greenhouse gas emissions by
2050, which the Legislature codifi
ed into law in 2021.
“Massachusetts is a national
and global leader in combating
climate change and shifting our
economy away from dirty fossil fuels
to clean, renewable sources of
energy like off shore wind and solar,”
said Lewis. “But the scale and
urgency of the climate challenges
we face demand that we rapidly
expand our burgeoning off shore
wind energy industry and accelerate
eff orts to green our transportation
sector and buildings.”
The bill now heads to a Conference

According to reports, the
A
n elderly Malden man who
was enjoying a late-night
meal in Boston's Downtown
Crossing shopping hub was assaulted
and lost his food when
a small group of juveniles attacked
him recently.
The attack was reported as
part of an online report detailing
a recent surge of teen-based violence
and vandalism in one of
Boston's busiest and most visible
shopping and dining hubs.
In this incident, taking place
earlier this month, a Malden
man, 81, whose identity was
withheld, was munching on
a hamburger in a Downtown
Crossing fast food establishment
when he was approached
by a group of four juveniles,
identified as between 12-14
years old.
The three girls and a boy entered
McDonald's at 329 Washington
St., said nothing, but
ripped the hamburger out of
his hand, slapped the man on
the head and then sprayed
whipped cream from a dispenser
into his face and on his chest,
according to reports.
Police responded to the
scene, according to reports,
but though shaken up, the Malden
81-year-old did not require
medical attention.
According to the online reDowntown
Crossing area has
seen multiple incidents of assaults
both physical and verbal,
particularly by young teens
ages from 12-14, particularly by
female suspects.
In one other recent incident,
Boston Police are investigating

port, the same foursome of alleged
assailants of the Malden
senior showed up at nearby Silvertone
Bar and Grill, 69 Bromfi
eld St., where they allegedly requested
alcohol but the owner
noticed they were clearly underage,
just in their early teens.
The owner asked them to
leave when they apparently
started shouting a protest slogan
and demanding the staff
also say it, according to the police
report.
After they were escorted out,
all the while allegedly screaming
a variety of “racial slurs” and spitting
at employees and the 15 or
so patrons, they allegedly threw
a soda bottle at the glass door,
along with other things, breaking
the glass door, which caused
four young girls ages 12 and

after they allegedly kicked,
punched and spit at police

of 10-12 juvenile girls had attacked
and beaten. Two of the
girl suspects also kicked at and
damaged a cruiser while in custody
inside.
The incident was reported as
a hate crime and the Civil Rights
Unit of the police was alerted.
Two days later, police say the
same group that attacked the
Malden man were seen again at
the Black Seed Cafe, 131 Tremont
St. There, two took turns

Malden Today, Tomorrow and Yesterday – Chris Simonelli fundraiser
By Peter F. Levine
The kid is popular. Chris drew
I
t is said in Malden today, tomorrow
and yesterday...
Speaking of Chris Simonelli’s
April 8 well-attended fundraiser...I
saw an amazing cross section
of Malden enjoying Albert’s
sensational raviolis and listening
to some inspiring speakers.
Neal Anderson crushed it!
Nearly stole the show. Put a mic
in this guy’s hands and watch
out! Sparks fly! Great job, Neal.
Joey Simonelli, Chris’ son, may
have more charisma than his
pops – a standup guy whose altruism
credentials go toe to toe
with his Councillor father. Keep
up the great work, Joey, and
thank you.
Cathy Leblanc from Ward 5
was in the house. I do not mean
to imply this young lady is only
about Ward 5. Cathy is Malden.
All Malden. Cathy has never
held public office, but she
cares. A great deal. Cathy is active.
Cathy is passionate. Cathy
always fights the good fight.
Thank you for that, Cathy.
an atypical, diverse crowd for a
fundraiser in April with no election
within sight. Who does
that?! Who packs a hall with people
of all kinds of different ethnic
backgrounds? All kinds of
disparate political positions? All
kinds of different socioeconomic
backgrounds? Chris does!
Chris took center stage and
was his usual off the cuff, affable
self. First time I heard him
talk of the demons that he possessed
years ago – how with
the help of friends and family
(funny son Joey story of tough
love), he was able dropkick all
that foolishness into the distant
past. It’s a great, courageous story.
One that should be celebrated.
One that I know he is proud
of. We are all proud of his story.
There are second acts in life for
sure. Chris is proof.
Former MHS Principal Brown
is an enthusiastic CS supporter.
We miss you, Dana. Please
come back. Malden High School
needs you, badly.
Chris talked and talked and

talked. I kid. Chris is engaging.
Never dull. His actions speak
louder than his words, though.
His plans to beautify the Ward
7 neighborhood are long overdue.
He was the impetus for the
skate park years ago. He’s got
plans to upgrade the park and
make it a showcase on the North
Shore – a Resource/Multi-Cultural
Center is being planned
as we read together. Youth programming
and events, road and
sidewalk upgrades, upgrades to
Lincoln and Kierstead Park! Forgetaboutit!
Gonna be a busy
summer for Mr. Simonelli.
Oh yeah, the city plans to
name the skate park after Chris.
Well deserved.
Ward 5 Councillor (for life,
hopefully) Barbara Murphy
looked on with pride as her surrogate
son Chris thanked her
for her unwavering support
through the good, the bad and
the ugly. Oh yeah, he also plans
on taking on the mess they
made of Willow Street. Forgetaboutit!
Albert
Spadafora will soon be
inducted into the Malden High
School Alumni Hall of Fame – a
great day in Malden history. He
is being celebrated throughout
Malden and his home away
from home, Edgeworth. His
son, Craig the Councillor, isn’t
used to sharing the spotlight.
I know my old friend can use
some spotlight right about now,
although when I saw him at
Chris Simonelli’s SRO fundraiser
at Anthony’s on Canal Street
he looked as happy as a clam
– Craig and pops Albert playing
host at the old barn to the
many friends and family members
that filled the upstairs banquet
room for Chris. Once again,
I had 20 hard-hitting questions
for Councillor-at-Large/Council
President Spadafora. Never one
to back down from a challenge,
Crag kindly replied:

John Preziosa, they called him
the pride of Newall Street (or
does he call himself that? I forget).
Longtime readers of this
column will remember John as
a member of the groundbreaking
interracial hip-hop group
based out of Malden, Top Choice
Clique. After TCC, Coach Prez
had stints as head men’s hoop
coach at Wheelock College, Bunker
Hill Community College and
Bishop Fenwick with an occasional
TCC reunion thrown in.
He was also an assistant coach at
Salem State University and Melrose
High. He is now at Quinsigamond
CC.
I had six questions for my old
friend, Prez... growing up Malden
was the theme:
yesterday (MTTY): Your favorite
restaurant/sub shop/pizza place
growing up on Newhall Street?
Jawn P: Not an easy question.
(I had so many of them!) My goto
place for pizza growing up
was Sal’s (then Verdone’s). I remember
we would get a large
cheese every Friday night for
years. The big draw was cutting
the coupons off the box (10 gets
a free pizza!). I continued to go
there whenever I visited Malden.
Both of our boys (Marino
and Gino) have grown up on
Pisa Pizza though.
MTTY: Favorite Malden Fourth
of July memory (where and
when)?
JP: Green Street Park (Ward
1). Mr. Hennessy was councillor,
and my dad would help. One
year (nine or 10 years old) we
came up with the idea of using
gum to stick the peanuts to the
spoon in the spoon race. My old
man caught on and disqualified
us all from the rest of the day’s
events. I couldn’t defend my
Free Throw championship!
MTTY: Favorite spot in Malden
Square as a youngster?
JP: I loved going to A&B Music
to browse through their 45s. I remember
taking my aunts favorite
Cars/J. Geils records and trading
them in for Blondie’s “Rapture”
record down at Headlines.
MTTY: Must-see TV growing
up?
JP: Donnie and Marie, The Incredible
Hulk, Batman, Happy
Days, This Week in Baseball,
WWWF Championship wrestling
(Bruno Sammartino was a
god in our household).
MTTY: Favorite sports coach
as a youngster?
JP: Paul Russell was my little
league coach as a 12-year-old.
Coach Russell was the coolest
cat in Malden. He would pick me
up for practice in a white convertible
Cadillac. Kenny Mazonson’s
MNBL was big for me as
well. Kenny Petraglia gave me
my first start coaching at Centre
Methodist.
MTTY: Growing up in Malden,
first musical concert you
attended?
JP: A Drum and Bugle competition
at Macdonald Stadium
was my very first concert, I
guess. But my favorite earliest
memory of watching a group
was Mr. Bob Crowley and Richie
Willis in North Shore Acappella
at Cricket’s in Faneuil Hall.
“This is the end, beautiful
friend, this is the end, my only
friend, the end” – one last word
from Prez: “I just completed my
first season as Men’s Head Basketball
coach at Quinsigamond
CC! We finished 7-12 and missed
the playoffs by a game. I’m excitMALDEN:

Almost 62
Dear Almost,
Generally, Social Security retirement benefi ts, as well as disability
and survivor benefi ts, are paid in the month after the month
they are due. So, if you want to start receiving your Social Security
benefi ts in July, your July benefi ts will be distributed in August.
The day of the month you receive your benefi t payment, however,
will depend on your birthdate. Here’s the schedule of when
you can expect to receive your monthly check.
If you were born on the:
• 1st through the 10th: Expect your check to be deposited on
the second Wednesday of each month.
• 11th through the 20th: Expect your check to be deposited
on the third Wednesday of each month.
• 21st through the 31st: Expect your check to be deposited on
the fourth Wednesday of each month.
There are, however, a few exceptions to this schedule. For example,
if the day your Social Security check is supposed to be
deposited happens to be a holiday, your check will be deposited
the previous day. And, if you are receiving both Social Security
benefi ts and SSI payments, your Social Security check will
be deposited on the third day of the month.
You should also know that for Social Security benefi ciaries
who started receiving benefi ts before 1997, their Social Security
checks are paid on the third day of the month.
To get a complete schedule of 2022 payment dates, visit SSA.
gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2022.pdf.
Receiving Options
There are two ways you can receive your Social Security benefi
ts. Most benefi ciaries choose direct deposit into their bank or
credit union account because it’s simple, safe and secure. But if
you don’t want this option, or you don’t have a bank account
that your payments can be deposited into, you can get a Direct
Express Debit MasterCard and have your benefi ts deposited into
your card’s account.
This card can then be used to get cash from ATMs, banks or
credit union tellers, pay bills online and over the phone, make
purchases at stores or locations that accept Debit MasterCard
and get cash back when you make those purchases, and purchase
money orders at the U.S. Post Offi ce. The money you spend
or withdraw is automatically deducted from your account. You
can check your balance any time by phone, online or at ATMs.
There’s also no cost to sign up for the card, no monthly fees
and no overdraft charges. There are, however, some small fees
for optional services you need to be aware of, like multiple ATM
withdrawals. Currently, cardholders get one free ATM withdrawal
per month, but additional monthly withdrawals cost 85 cents
each not including a surcharge if you use a non-network ATM.
To learn more, visit USDirectExpress.com or call 800-333-1795.
When and How to Apply
The Social Security Administration recommends that you apply
for benefi ts three months before you want to start receiving
checks. This will give you enough time to make sure you
have all the needed information to complete the application.
See SSA.gov/hlp/isba/10/isba-checklist.pdf for a checklist of
what you’ll need.
You can apply for your Social Security benefi ts online at SSA.

in just four seconds behind Jerchirchir
with a 2:21:05. Two other
Kenyans finished third and

An especially touching moment
on Marathon Monday
took place at the finish line for
Henry Richard, of Boston, who
was running his first Boston
Marathon. Richard, 20, is a college
student and the brother
of the late Martin Richard, who
was killed in the 2013 Marathon
bombing tragedy. At only eight
years old, Martin was the youngest
victim that fateful Marathon
Monday.
A younger sister, Jane, now 16
years old, lost a leg in the tragic
bombing. Henry Richard carried
both his late brother and sister
with him during the race, with
Martin's name etched in marker
on his right arm and Jane's
name emblazoned on his chest
inside his shirt.
Henry was also at the bombing
scene on Patriot’s Day, 2013,
just 11 years old, but emerged
from the tragedy with just cuts
and bruises. "I know Martin was
with me during the race," Henry
told reporters afterward, pledging
to continue to run the Boston
Marathon next year in #127,
in 2023, and thereafter in his
family's honor.
Locally, in the Advocate readership

in the Marathon on Monday,
most of them able to finish the
26.2 mile race.
The top male and overall finisher
in Everett was David Pirman,
39, with a time of 4:15:59.
Everett's top female finisher
was Alexandra Cordoba, 28, at

The top male and overall finisher
in Malden was also a firsttime
Boston Marathon participant.
Patrick Mangan, 30, finished
at 3:15:56, 6,069th overall

impressive accomplishment in

of Peabody, MA requesting that the Court enter a formal Decree
and Order and for such other relief as requested in the Petition. The

Without Surety on the bond in unsupervised adminstration.
IMPORTANT NOTICE

a written appearance and objection at this Court before:

This is NOT a hearing date, but a deadline by which you

cultural events, and generally
making art through hands-on
activities at the center. We also
heard strong support for cultural
events and classes that celebrate
Malden’s diverse communities,
free or reduced-cost programming,
and a welcoming
atmosphere with comfortable
seating in public areas, language
access, and programming for
kids and teens.
We have also learned, by
studying similar institutions in
other cities, that renting out
space is a crucial source of revenue
that will be essential for subsidizing
the community-centered
programs and spaces. In
order to be sustainable, the Center
must be able to accommodate
both uses.
We are currently working to
hone and refi ne the focus of the
building’s programming, whether
that’s geared toward performing
arts, studios, workspace for
community nonprofi ts and cultural
institutions, or some combination
of all three. You can
read more about these options
at mapc.org/maldenculture,
and we will present our consensus
for community feedback at
the Courthouse Arts Festival on
Saturday, May 14 from 12 p.m. to
4 p.m. A full draft of the concept
plan will be released at the end
of May for public comment before
it is fi nalized this summer.
The concept plan is just the
beginning of this project. We
are still working to purchase the
building from the state, which
we hope to do sometime this
fall. We are also working to secure
funding for a more detailed
analysis of the necessary structural
improvements and what
the business model will look like.
The long-term plan is for the City
of Malden to own the building
and contract with a third-party
operator with expertise in managing
this kind of facility.
Once we know more about
how much it will cost to retrofi
t the building, and we have an
operator onboard to manage
day-to-day operations, we can
work on the actual construction.
While we have made great
strides in this project, we recognize
that we have so much
more work to do before we
can open the doors. It is never
going to be too late to get involved
in this project so if you
are interested, please make sure
to check for updates on our
website, mapc.org/maldenculture,
or reach out to Senior Planner
