The year is more than half over already, but there are many more fun things to come! Be sure to check out
the Events section on page 22 to read more about upcoming neighborhood activities including a Rock the
Block Neighborhood Party and a traditional Oktoberfest featuring authentic German food and music. The
back cover this month features the 2nd Annual Camp Lake Ashton week-long event. All activities are once
again FREE OF CHARGE for everyone that signs up due to our amazing sponsors. This is a great chance
to enjoy time with friends and neighbors and who knows, you may learn something new by joining in on
the fun. There is never a shortage of fun at Lake Ashton! In addition to activities at Lake Ashton, residents
have the chance to explore parts of Florida by signing up for Small World Tours day trips. Residents will
have the opportunity to travel to Seminole Hard Rock Casino in August and to Ruth Eckerd Hall in
Clearwater for The Price is Right in October. Visit the Clubhouse Activities Desk for more information.
Small World Tours will present trips for 2022 in October, so stay tuned for more information to come.
Supervisors met on July 19 and a wrap up report was sent out via email blast on July 22. Residents who
did not receive this report are encouraged to reach out to Christine Wells, LACDD Community Director, to
receive a copy. The budget hearing is set for August 16 in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Lake Wales residents
should have received a mailed notice to inform them of the proposed increase for Fiscal Year 2022
(September 30, 2021 - October 1, 2022). Please note the assessment amount is not final and will be voted
on at the budget hearing. It will not surpass a total of $1969 for the year (an increase of $94). If you live in
Lake Wales and did not receive this notice or have
questions regarding the notice please contact
Governmental Management Services at 407- 841-5524
and identify yourself as a Lake Ashton resident and they
will be happy to assist.

The Board of Supervisors met on Friday, July 16th. A recap of this meeting
was sent out via Constant Contact email on July 19th, but if anyone has any
questions, please don’t hesitate to ask one of the LA II CDD Board members.
They work very diligently to get you the answers you need. Their next meeting
will be on Friday, August 20th at 9 AM in the HFC Community Center.

August will be a busy month at the HFC with some very exciting events. Three
seminars will be held. August 12th will be the “Hospice and Grief Support Seminar”. On August 19th,
the “Physical Therapy Forum Seminar” will take place and on August 26th, “Choosing Your PCP (Personal
Care Physician) Seminar” will be provided. These seminars are all free of charge to Lake Ashton
residents. We end the month with a big Aloha Paradise Party on the 27th. This will be an evening to
remember with Hawaiian food and beverages, décor, and music.
August is one of our warmest months, so make sure to always stay hydrated. Beer and other alcoholic
beverages contribute to dehydration, so water or other beverages with electrolytes are the healthier
choices when outside or exerting yourself. Our September Lake Ashton Connection will be available at
the HFC on Wednesday, August 25th.

Are you new to Lake Ashton Community, or unsure how to get involved with a group
or activity? By taking part in your community, you can create a strong support group
of those who share your common interests and values. Being an active member of
your community is key to creating lasting bonds and friendships. If you’d like to get
involved but aren’t quite sure where to start, here are some ideas:
Enjoying Your Community
1. Read Up: Check the monthly LA Times newsletter, calendars, and email blasts.
Extra copies of the newsletter and calendars are located at both Activities Desks and
are also sent out via email blast. These are the easiest ways to see the available
groups and activities that Lake Ashton has to offer.
2. Ask Around: Don’t be afraid to ask any residents you run into throughout the day
about something you see they are involved in. You can also stop at either Activities
Desk and staff will be happy to help you connect with group leaders or suggest a fun
activity to try.
3. Attend Monday Coffee: Join staff and residents in the Clubhouse Ballroom every
Monday (except holidays and CDD Meeting days) at 9 a.m. to discuss updates on
activities, facility maintenance, and other community news. Enjoy coffee and
refreshments for $2 with your neighbors. The fourth Monday also features a Pancake
Breakfast from Ashton Tap & Grill.
4. Ease into It: Start small. You don’t have to bite off more than you can chew when
it comes to community groups and activities. Create small goals that are attainable,
such as finding one or two activities per month.
5. Do Your Part: Dedicate time towards volunteering and contributing to Lake Ashton
groups and activities in addition to other community non-profit groups. Volunteer
opportunities are often listed in the LA Times Monthly Newsletter and sent out in
email blasts. This is a fantastic way to meet those in the area and give back.
6. Your Turn: If you don’t find something that you love, create your own group or
activity! If you have the time, this is a great way to display your originality and
creativity. The key is to find what you are passionate about and share it with others.
The Clubhouse and HFC Activities Desks are more than willing to help! Clubhouse
Activities Desk: 863.324.6032 HFC Activities Desk: 863.595.1562
Facilitator volunteer opportunities are available for the following groups:
1. Adopt-A-Road
2. Caregivers Support Group
3. Recycling Cans for Literacy
4. Widows and Widowers Connection
These groups are no longer active due to needing a facilitator to coordinate meetings
and activities. To get more information regarding these opportunities please reach out
to LACDD Community Director Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com.

POLIC Y HIGHLIGHT
This month outlines the policy regarding use of the
Lake Ashton Golf Course Tract, including the
Pathways, Bridges, and Ponds that are located within
its boundaries. As a shared amenity, all Lake Ashton
residents share use of the land, Pathways, Bridges,
and Ponds. Each CDD is responsible for the
maintenance of these areas in their corresponding
property boundaries. For example, LACDD is
responsible for maintenance of the Pathways,
Bridges, and Ponds located in the East Golf Course
and LAIICDD is responsible for maintenance of the
Pathways, Bridges, and Ponds located in the West
Golf Course. The Golf Club is owned by LAIICDD.
Operation of the Golf Club is run by Indigo Golf
under the supervision of LAIICDD. The land that
makes up the East Golf Course is owned by LACDD
and leased back to the Golf Club. The land that
makes up the West Golf Course is owned by
LAIICDD. The full Joint Amenity Facilities Policy can
be found online at lakeashtoncdd.com or
lakeashton2cdd.com under "Additional District
Documents". Contact Christine Wells
(cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or Mary Bosman
(mbosman@lakeashton2cdd.com) with questions.
X. GOLF COURSE
1. Cart Paths and Bridges i. All Pathways/Bridges
within the Golf Course are shared equally between
golfers, golf carts, pedestrians and bicyclists. Use of
the Pathways/Bridges by Non-Golfers during hours
when golf is being played creates potential safety
hazards; therefore, all users of the Golf Course must
exercise extreme caution when golf is being played.
ii. To reduce danger and likelihood of being struck by
a golf ball, Non-Golfers should walk or ride in the
opposite direction of play (starting on Hole 18 and
ending on Hole 1), pause as golfers (“Golfers”) are
about to hit, and only continue once the Golfers have
struck their balls. Golfers should wave Non-Golfers
through if the approaching Non-Golfers are fast
moving or can pass by quickly. iii. Non-Golfers must
stay on the Pathways/Bridges or Pond banks. NonGolfers
are encouraged to monitor the daily email
circulated by Pro Shop staff members announcing
course conditions, closures, and starting times for
the groups on each course. In doing so, Non-Golfers
can identify periods when no golfers are on the
course. One course is normally closed on Monday
and League play (Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday) does not start until 9:00 a.m.; however,
Non-Golfers should check the conditions of each
course before use. Additionally, it is generally safer
to walk before 8:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m., when
golfers are less likely to be present. iv. Pathways
adjacent to Ponds and bridges can be dangerous.
Golf Carts should operate at a safe speed and always
use headlights after dusk. Extreme caution should be
taken when traveling through standing water on
Pathways. v. Pets are permitted to be walked and
exercised on the Pathways/Bridges. At no time
should they be in the fairways or within thirty feet of
a green. Pets must be on leash or in a Golf Cart at all
times. Pet owners are responsible to pick up after
their pet. vi. Use Golf Course At Own Risk: All
Individuals who enter the Golf Course and/or utilize
Pathways/Bridges and/or Ponds, including as a NonGolfer
pedestrian or within a Golf Cart, shall do so at
his or her own risk as further provided in Section XII
herein and assumes all risks associated with entering
property used for playing golf, including but not
limited to errant golf balls and golf clubs.
2. Ponds within the Golf Course i. The Districts
encourage a “catch and release” policy for any fish
caught in the Ponds because of the frequency with
which the Golf Course is treated with herbicides and
fertilizers which may produce run-off into the Ponds
within the Golf Course. ii. Non-Golfers using the
Ponds along the Golf Course must exercise extreme
caution when Golfers are present and playing golf
because of the risk of being hit by an errant golf ball
or golf club. Non-Golfers using the Ponds should
position themselves away from the flight of any
Golfer’s shot and be aware of Golfers hitting. Golf
Carts being used by Non-Golfers using the Ponds
should be parked away from play and off the
Pathways/Bridges. iii. See Section XI.xiii. for
additional rules regarding Ponds.

a fee. Any unauthorized individual found using the
Golf Course facilities or playing the course will be
asked to make restitution. If payment is not
received, the individual will be removed and
receive a warning. ii. Tee times are available upon
request through the Pro Shop. Prior to play, Golfers
must report to the Pro Shop. Golfers are asked to
abide by local rules regarding dress, behavior, and
play. Golfers should comply with announcements
on course playing conditions. iii. Golfers are
reminded that they share the Pathways/Bridges
and Ponds with NonGolfers. Golfers do not have
any higher priority for use than any Non-Golfer and
need to be considerate in allowing use by all Lake
Ashton Community members.

SAFET Y
NEIGHBORHOOD WAT CH
2021 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
National Night Out is an annual communitybui
lding campaign that promotes pol icecommunity
partnerships and neighborhood
cama r ader i e to make the Lake Ashton
neighborhood a safer, more caring place to live.
This year the Lake Ashton National Night Out will
be held on August 3. A golf cart parade/caravan
will take place at 7:30 pm starting at the HFC
going throughout the community and ending at
the Clubhouse. All Lake Ashton residents are asked
to keep their outside lights on to signify their
commitment to a crime-free environment! Help
make this National Night Out a special one and
hopefully all of the community will participate!
SAFET Y IN THE SUMMER
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Summer is here, but these tips are pertinent all
year long. It’s never too early to start sprucing up
crime prevention activities at home. Always better
safe than sorry!
• Trim trees and bushes around your home
(windows and doors should be clear and visible
from the street). Lock pet doors unless in use by
your pet.
• Consider purchasing a safe for cash and jewelry
(only give location to trusted people)
• Avoid home-improvement scams (door-to-door
solicitors are not allowed and should never be let
inside your home. Always ask for identification -
check references before agreeing to repairs).
• Don’t announce vacation plans on social media!
Post pictures after you return. You never know
who sees your announcements.
• Let your NW Coordinator and/or Captain know
you will be away so they can keep extra eyes and
ears on your property.

LIGHTNING SAFET Y
Lake Ashton has a lightning detection system to
alert golfers to get off the course, and notify all
residents to go indoors when the potential for a
lightning strike is in the area. When the system
senses a lightning danger, a high-pitched siren
sounds and strobe lights turn on and stay on until
the danger passes. These strobe lights are at
various locations including on top of the
Clubhouse, the backside of the HFC and the boat
dock on Lake Ashton. A low-pitched horn will
sound all clear and the strobe lights will turn off
when lightning has passed. Be safe — lightning
strikes may occur far away from a visible storm.
Get out of pools, do not stand under trees, and
get indoors when the siren sounds. Remember —
golf carts are not safe from lightning.
DRIVE SAFELY!
Polk County Schools start back
August 10. Please use caution when
traveling CR 653 during school
opening and closing times.
All vehicles, including
golf carts, must obey
all stop signs and the
20 mph speed limit
throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, watch
for pedestrians at all
times. Obeying posted
speed limit and traffic
signs can help avert a
potential tragedy.

COOK I NG S A F E TY
By James Schuppe, LA CERT
Kitchen/cooking fires are the
number one cause of fires in the
home. Being watchful and alert while cooking can
prevent burns and fires from occurring or getting
out of hand. Never leave your home while you are
cooking especially when frying, boiling, or broiling
food. Turn pot handles inward to prevent knocking
pots off the stove causing burns or fire. Keep loose
items away from burners including any loose
clothing you might be wearing. And finally keep a
lid close by in case a fire in your pot should occur.
Cover the pot with the lid, smothering the fire.
However, NEVER attempt to put the fire out
yourself if it’s out of control. Get out of the house

UPD A TES
FROM THE
PRO SHOP
By Ron LaVoie, General Manager
Final Membership numbers for fiscal year
2020/2021 are 390 memberships which translate
into 609 golfers. This is 125 more than prior year.
We have 305 yearly members with 155 being
couples and 150 are singles. There were 85 seasonal
memberships, which is 22% of the total
membership. The Associate membership brought in
104 memberships with 39 being couples and 65
singles. Our New Home Membership now stands at
56 with hopes of converting 25% into full members.
Overall dues were up 1.5% over prior year, but
when you factor in the Associate Green Fees the
club is up 8.4%. All the lots are under contract, so
we are hoping to add an additional 25 members in
the next 12 months. Don’t forget about the 2%
discount if you join before August 31st!
As everyone knows the hot, humid, and wet season
is upon us, so extra care must be taken while riding
carts on the course. On days when it is cart path
only all four wheels need to stay on the cart path at
all times. You should not be passing anyone when
you play. When it is not cart path only, please
observe the 90-degree rule and pay special
attention to our consistently wet areas this time of
year. Pay more attention when playing 1, 2, & 9 (125
yards from green) 10, 11,15,16 and 18 fairways on
the west and 1 thru 5, 6,7,12,14 & 17 by the green,
and 15 on the East. Reminder that all par 3’s are cart
path only all the time. Please pay attention to the
morning emails or check with the shop signage
before teeing off.
Golf course maintenance will continue trying to
maintain the course to the standards we currently
have, however many areas become too wet to mow
and they can become ugly to look at while drying
out. Maintenance also is having its challenges trying
to find people to work, so please understand when
some areas are not immediately maintained. Eagle’s
Nest is also having the same problem trying to find
help as Vickie is down to 3 servers, which is why we
have limited hours, and sometimes limited menu
items. Make sure you call before coming over to
ensure they are open, especially days when the
course is closed because they will tend to close
early on those days.
The membership has done a good job of riding two
to a cart, especially our leagues and groups. The
golf shop staff thanks all of you who have helped
make this happen. We cannot maintain great
fairways with four carts in a group, so please
partner-up when playing, or when riding individual
carts, it is cart path only.
Regarding Pro Shop emails, if you have checked all
your folders and contacted the shop to ensure the
correct email is on file, then the final move is to call
Mary at the HFC.
The Golf Committee members are Rolly Geyer,
Mary Lopez, Vickie Andrew, and Bill Bothwell. If you
would like anything discussed at one of the
meetings, please reach out to one of them, or let
Matt or myself know what your concerns might be.
Those non-golfers who would like to receive
notifications on course conditions and closures
should add your name to the email list by
contacting the Pro Shop at 863-326-1032.

By Diane Struble
Baby, it's hot outside! But the Niners are still having
fun playing some alternative games several times
per month. To try to beat the heat, remember to
keep hydrated and visit the Eagle's Nest after your
game. The Niners are always looking for new
members. Join in for a round of golf! Shotgun start
time is 9 am every Tuesday. Meet in the parking lot
for announcements at 9:40. Check with the Pro
Shop for fees. The fall fundraiser for senior orphans
of Polk County will be the first week of November -
more details to come next month. Contact VP Karen
Ferrande at 207-451-0143 if you have any questions
or would like to join the LA Niners.
LAMGA
By Paul Fichtman
July marked another successful, though typically
soggy, month for the LAMGA. The events were wellattended
and everyone is looking forward to an
exciting August, which features the very popular Twoday
(Pick Your Partner) Ringer Event August 25 and 26
that includes breakfast and lunch on Days 1 and 2,
respectively. The Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge
Top Ten Leader Board through the end of July includes
Mike Krigelski - $125.75; Les Jacobsen - $120.10; Jim
Ford - $116.75; Duff Hill - $113.60; Pat O’Neil -
$108.25; Donn Yasz - $106.60; Jack Farmer - $105.47;
Tom Murphy - $104.85; Rolly Geyer - $102.50 and ;
Gary Pagel - $97.50. Thanks, as always, to Red
Hoagland Hyundai for sponsoring this very popular
year-long contest. Continuing the new monthly
tradition, it’s time to recognize the generous sponsors
who support the annual Member-Guest tournament.
This month features the following Dentists and
Personal Service Salons: Boyett Family Dentistry, Forni
Dental, George W. Butz III DDS, Heartland Dental,
Pure Dental Brands – Paul Palo, DDS, Cammeo’s Salon
and Day Spa, Golden Nails, and Posh Salon & Day
Spa. Please support them with your patronage. You
can find a list of all the sponsors on the LAMGA web
site, lakeashtonliving.com, and Talk of Lake Ashton.
The August schedule is comprised of: August 4 – Best
3 Nets; August 11 – Individual Quota Points (field will
be flighted); August 18 – Best 2 Nets; and August 25
& 26 – Pick Your Partner 2 Day Ringer Tournament
(mentioned above). Finally, as a reminder to everyone,
keeping up the pace of play makes golf more
enjoyable for all our members. Here are four tips that
will help speed up the pace of play without any
negative effect on your game.
• PLAY READY GOLF.
• Always carry a spare ball in your pocket in case a
provisional is necessary.
• Line up your putt before it is your turn, so you are
ready to putt.
• Always record your score at the next tee. Never
record your score at the green.

The LALGA is still playing this
summer and the luncheons
after golf have been great.
Thank you to Jackie Tressler
for organizing them. Check
out this cute picture of Mary
Donaldson at the July
luncheon with one of Vicki’s
spectacular beverages.
Cheers!
In addition, the LALGA is preparing for the fall and
the amazing golf tournaments ahead. The first, the
Pink Ribbon Tournament, is well-underway. The
committee is looking for silent auction items. Last
year’s items were incredible. If you have anything you
would like to donate such as a week’s time share,
tickets to events, art work, etc please contact either
Lydia Fichtman or Kim Kutsch. Please keep an eye
out for further information about sponsoring or
donating to the event.
Meet Janis Baun
Janis grew up in a small town in
central Illinois until her father, a
radio engineer, transferred to a
“new” TV station in Madison,
Wisconsin. After high school she
attended University of Wisconsin
Platteville, majoring in Physical
Education. Her love of sports
stemmed from her participation in
youth swimming and diving and continued as an
adult playing volleyball, racquetball and slow pitch
softball. She didn’t start golfing until she was 45 but
has been lucky to have five hole-in-ones all between
2003-2012, so she feels she is overdue for another
one!
After briefly residing in California and Washington
Janis returned to Madison. She worked for 16 years
for the State of Wisconsin as the Recording Secretary
to the State Building Commission. She then
transferred to the UW System, preparing Capital
Budget project requests and usurping them through
the legislative approval process. As a Senior Capital
Budget Analyst she initiated and directed the
implementation of a new automated capital asset
management program which was adopted by the
Department of Administration for implementation by
all other state agencies. She describes her primary
duties as basically writing long, grammatically correct
and excruciating detailed documents that nobody
read. She retired in 2004 and worked a few part-time
jobs, so she could continue to golf.
Janis’s volunteer activities included being a Cub
Scout den mother (should require battle pay), singing
first soprano in her church choirs, serving on the
Parish Board, delivering Meals on Wheels, and
Kiwanis. She also helped establish a new Habitat for
Humanity affiliate in her community and in their fundraising
campaign she organized and ran seven golf
outings, raising enough funds to build a house.
After 18 years supporting two children as a single
parent, Janis met her “prince” Dan and they were
married in 1991. They moved to Prairie du Sac and
lived there for 25 years. Between them, they have
four children and 11 grandchildren. They are hoping
to see all of them on their road trip in July. They are
also looking forward to their river cruise from Prague
to Paris next summer.
Jan and Dan moved to Lake Ashton in late 2017 and
were snow birds for two years before they came to
their senses and became full-time residents. They
enjoy the community activities, dances and karaoke.
Janis especially appreciates all the emails, cards,
flowers and treats she received during her recent
recovery from major surgery. She is anxious to start
golfing again in early August. The LALGA is thrilled
that Jan is a part of the league.

LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
LA Rockers is a group committed to painting and
hiding rocks as “random acts of kindness”. In
addition, the rockers have distributed "Welcome"
rocks to new residents, painted rocks to hide at
special events like the Breast Cancer Awareness
Golf Tournament, donated rocks to local nursing
homes for the holidays, and created rocks for
Memorial Gardens. At the annual July 4th
Fundraiser and Silent Auction, many residents
shared stories of how much finding decorated
“gifts” served to brighten their day or make them
feel comfortable in their new home. Mission
accomplished! LA Rockers meets every other
Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm in the HFC Community
Center. August meetings will be the 11th and 25th.
Newcomers are welcome to come and see what the
Rockers do, and join in on the fun!
LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
Hopefully you all have enjoyed watching the
Olympics, especially the water sports. There was a
new sport: surfing, new swim events, and a name
change from Synchronized Swimming to Artistic
Swimming. These Olympics were certainly unusual
with no foreign spectators allowed (including
parents) and very strict COVID protocols. The final
swim night is August 1 on NBC and the closing
ceremonies will be August 2. (continued on p. 35)

׉	7cassandra://xjOEh874BsmNBJBj1u-6z2COZZKqRSVkY3wUMaqlbiQ7`awrK׉E(continued from p. 34) Do you know that Lake
Ashton has its own Olympic swimmers? (Well, sort
of.) Some members of the LA Swim Club swim in
the Senior Games, which used to be called the
Senior Olympics. So, they used to be Senior
Olympians. Maybe a stretch … but they are
dedicated like Olympians; they aim to swim like
Olympians; and they know the many physical,
mental, & health benefits of swimming. Swimming
is unlike any other aerobic exercise because it
exercises almost all parts of the body with no
constraints from gravity. This makes it ideal for
most people, especially those with osteoarthritis or
foot problems. Swimming also decreases arterial
stiffness, a risk factor for heart issues. One also
breathes differently when swimming. When you run
or bike, your breath tends to be shallow and you
exhale forcefully. In swimming, it’s the opposite and
that is more beneficial. It can even improve your
posture as swimmers backs tend to arch and
stretch in the water. Those looking for a buddy with
whom to swim or an organized workout should
consider joining the LA Swim Club. Please contact
sandyw1994@aol.com.

On July 5 the Lake Ashton Pickleball Association
held a mixed-partner type tournament in which
partners were randomly selected for each game
they played. Players played five games lasting 10
minutes, or until one team scored 11 points. Each
player’s personal point accumulation for all their
games was totaled at the end to determine the
winners. Prizes were $25, $15, and $5 in Ashton
Tap & Grill gift cards. For the men, Earl Schley and
Carl Boast placed first and second, respectively.
For the women, it was Sue Morris and Diane
Holman. Spirit awards were also handed out to
Mark Taylor and Sherry Hynoski. A total of 26
players participated in what was a very fun format
that allowed players of different levels to play
together. Thanks to the participants for coming
out, the organizers, and the support staff for
putting on a very well-coordinated event.
The LAPA officers continue to address the
deficiencies of the pickleball courts that were
brought up and discussed at the last meeting.
President Cal, VP Chuck and Treasurer Lisa met
with the LAIICDD supervisor in charge of facilities
on July 12 to discuss some of those issues to try to
get his support for making needed changes and
improvements. Topics discussed were repainting
and resurfacing the courts and the problem of balls
rolling under the fence. As of this writing,
members are waiting to find out if the meeting was
successful. It is going to take a concerted effort by
all members to make these changes happen by
showing up and speaking up at the CDD meetings
