By Reagan Seye 3. This is when I start finalizing details. Notice the difference between how dark the pencil looks when I’m adding in final details and when I added the details that might make it to the final sketch. When it comes to drawing this specific hairstyle, I use small curved lines that vary in length. Drawing using only curved lines or angular lines doesn’t look natural unless it’s a deliberate part of your style. But using a mix of curved and angular can be a good mix making someone look more natural in a drawing. They kind of look like wifi signals. When I finish drawing a certain part of the drawing like the skirt for example, I shade it in to add contrast between the clothes. People say you should only shade in one direction but in my opinion, it depends on what you are trying to do. If you color in a drawing using contrast with colors can also make your art look more unique. I don’t have much experience with color theory but it can play a big part when it comes to coloring characters and many other creations. But in this case, I’m only sketching a person, not coloring them. 4. Drawing other details like hands come with practice. I do use square and rectangular shapes to draw hands, and my art style is cartoony so, I don’t worry about a bunch of detail. It really does depend on what your art style is. Drawing people, animals, and everyday objects comes down to simplifying things into basic shapes. A part of the reason why it may look easy to draw when you watch someone else is because they are confident about their art style. I decided to make this drawing and show the process so anyone that wants to read this and learn some techniques I learned to improve my art. 1. When I draw people, I start with a line called the line of action which is the line next to the human in the first picture. (I drew two different lines but one of them I actually used to draw a person.) I use a circle to draw the head and many other rounded shapes to draw the rest of the body. I use round rectangles and triangles to draw the torso and arms. I try to do this very quickly since this is the rough drawing. I try not to slowly make the shapes and make them perfectly shaped, because trying to immediately make a drawing perfect when it’s just being started will only mess it up. Understanding anatomy only gets easier the more you practice if you want to get better at drawing people. I have improved since when I first started drawing people, but I still have a lot to learn. Even with drawing a circle for the head, making a bunch of small separated, dashed lines to make a perfect circle isn’t the purpose. Perfecting the drawing comes at the end. 2. After drawing the rough drawing I lightly erase so it’s only slightly less visible. I lightly draw how I want the face, clothes, and whatever else I would like to be added to look. I also use shapes to draw facial features. When it comes to drawing people, you want to make it look like there’s movement whether you make it look like they are jumping, or make it look like their skirt is blowing in the wind. Clothes really help it look like there is movement because clothes can flow and move in all different directions. Making it look like there is movement can also be posing people like they are walking or making gestures at objects. Dramatize how a person looks so they look lively, even if they are just walking around. WIth one of the best teams Parker has seen in years, they hope to pull out on top. Their team is coached by Mr. Volkman. How do you encourage your teammates after a loss? NC: If we lose the first set in a game, I tell them that we have two more sets that we can still come back with. You really just have to shake off the negative attitude that “if we lost the first, we will probably lose the rest,” because it’s not true. I’ve noticed that with our team a lot and I think we just need to get in the right mindset that we still can win a game after a loss of a set. What are some important things to look for in a volleyball player? NC: There are things you should look for like passing and serving ability, but you should really look for a positive attitude and good sportsmanship from the player. I believe a bad attitude can really throw off the way someone does something. If a player can encourage other players, or can tell them that a loss of a point is ok, that is very important in my opinion. What hobbies do you have? NC: I’m currently in PJH theater and percussion in (PJH) band. I enjoy singing and songwriting in my free time and play guitar, ukulele, and piano. Who is your favorite athlete? NC: My favorite athlete is Jordyn Poulter. She is a setter just like me and went to the University of Illinois and played on their volleyball team from 2015-to 2018.
