At the recent Penn New Balance Outdoor Nationals, held at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania, Diagne’s accomplishments — unprecedented for a Malden High runner — led to her attaining New Balance Freshman All-American status in two events. Diagne represented her club team, the MetroCobras of Boston, at the Nationals. At the Nationals, the top six finishers in all events attain All-American status. Idle Hands, Malden’s first microbrewery, is a 100% family-owned craft brewery producing a wide array of Belgian and German-inspired ales and lagers. Originally launched in 2011 as a small nanobrewery in Everett, the business grew organically through the years, relocating to Commercial Street in Malden in 2016 — creating a larger, more inviting facility complete with a tap room. Over the past decade, Idle Hands has been a true community partner, assisting the city with community driven fundraisers and charity events that include regular cleanups in the city, working to bring the community together. A Several Malden juveniles face felony assault charges following investigation into Everett fireworks night melee Special to the Advocate melee involving at least a dozen youths at the Independence Day 250th fireworks celebration held recently at Glendale Park in Everett resulted in several Malden juveniles facing felony assault charges. In was unclear, according to reports, whether the four Malden juveniles, all believed to be 17 years old, were arrested at the scene by Everett Police. It has been confirmed that they were issued summons to appear in Malden District Court to answer charges at an August court date at a dangerousness hearing. The five suspects involved, four Malden juveniles and one other juvenile not identified by city of residence, were charged with offenses including —Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (shod foot), felony —Assault and Battery Causing trol. EPD requested mutual aid, which is standard practice for events of this size, and at least 25 officers from Revere, Chelsea, Somerville, Medford and the Massachusetts State Police responded. There were no reported injuries to officers or spectators. In all, over 2,700 spectators were on hand at Glendale Park. According to reports, at approximately 8:40 p.m., several altercations involving groups of juveniles occurred in and around Glendale Park, causing distress among some attendees. Officers assigned to the event responded immediately, intervened, and brought the situation under condent, Everett Mayor Robert Van Campen issued a statement. Part of that statement read, “Violence of any kind has no place at City events. We recognize that incidents like this are unsettling for residents and families, and we remain committed to providing safe, family-friendly community events through proactive planning and a strong public safety presence. According to Gorham Police reports, Michaela Svetlana Waldrop, of Malden, was traveling as a passenger on a motorcycle operated by Ryan C. Tidwell, 29, of Berlin, N.H., when the crash occurred on North Main Street (Route 16) in Gorham. The crash took place at about 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, just two days before the 250th on July 4. Police said the vehicle was traveling with a second motorcycle at the time, though no further details of the incident were immediately available, as the crash remains under investigation by the Gorham Police Department and the New Hampshire State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit. It was identified as a single-vehicle crash. Under the grant, the City of Malden — with support from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), the Healey-Driscoll Administration’s Federal Funds and Infrastructure Office (FFIO) and the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) — has been awarded $1.584 million in Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant funding from the US Department of Transportation (USDOT). MassDOT has committed to supporting Malden by funding the 20% match requirement with $396,000, bringing the total dollar award to $1.98 million. The USDOT BUILD grant program provides funding for surface transportation infrastructure projects with significant local or regional impact. The eligibility requirements of BUILD allow project sponsors — including state and local governments, counties, tribal governments, transit agencies and port authorities — to pursue multimodal and multijurisdictional projects that are more difficult to fund through other grant programs. BUILD grant funding will be used to complete design plans and other preliminary work before construction begins. Malden is actively pursuing state and federal transportation funding for construction over the next several years.
