Van kinds af aan werd ik al aangetrokken door alles wat de natuur in mijn omgeving te bieden had. Als peuter ging ik met mijn vader mee naar zijn landje (kostgrondje) om daar naar kleine beestjes te zoeken. Ik woon(de) in Nederland en had dus niets te vrezen van gevaarlijke dieren. Op mijn achtste kreeg ik mijn eerste fototoestel waarmee ik de natuur in mijn geboortestreek ging vastleggen. In de zomervakanties reisde ik met mijn ouders door Zuid-Europa waar ik mij vergaapte aan een nog grotere verscheidenheid aan insecten en reptielen. In Nederland ging ik na mijn opleiding in bosbouw, cultuurtechniek en natuurbeheer aan het werk bij Staatsbosbeheer. Daar werkte ik tot aan mijn pensioen in 2021 als boswachter, omgeven door planten en wilde dieren in de natuurreservaten van zuidoost-Nederland. De archipel van de Andaman en Nicobar eilanden in de golf van Bengalen (India) was mijn eerste kennismaking met het tropisch bos. Ik zag er voor het eerst witte koraalstranden met overhangende palmbomen en daarachter dicht ondoordringbaar oerwoud, waar tot dan toe nauwelijks westerlingen voet aan wal hadden gezet. Kleurige koraalri昀昀en, waar je al snorkelend tussen onwerkelijk gekleurde vissen zwom, hebben een diepe indruk op mij achtergelaten. Hierna volgden Indonesië, Papoea, Thailand, Madagascar, nog meer India, en West-Afrika. In Zuid- Amerika reisde ik door Ecuador, Argentinië, Peru en Brazilië. Begin 2020 bezocht ik voor het eerst Suriname, onmiddellijk gevolgd door nog 3 bezoeken in de daaropvolgende jaren. Ik was meteen verliefd op het land. Dat kon natuurlijk ook niet anders in een land dat voor meer dan 80% uit ongestoord tropisch bos bestaat en een ongeëvenaarde rijke natuur bezit. From my 昀椀rst trip to the tropics in 1977, I have been touched by the enormous diversity of 昀氀ora and fauna you can 昀椀nd in the forests. Besides my love for travelling, this started my passion for nature photography. Since childhood, I was drawn to everything nature had to o昀昀er in my surroundings. As a toddler, I went with my father to his vegetable garden to search for small animals. I live(d) in the Netherlands, so I had nothing to fear from dangerous animals. At the age of eight, I got my 昀椀rst camera with which I started capturing nature in my native region. During summer holidays, I travelled with my parents through southern Europe where I marvelled at an even greater variety of insects and reptiles. In the Netherlands, after studying forestry, agricultural engineering and nature management, I went to work for the Dutch Forestry Commission. There I worked until my retirement in 2021, as a forester ecologist surrounded by plants and wildlife in the nature reserves of south-eastern Netherlands. The archipelago of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal (India) was my 昀椀rst introduction to tropical forest. There for the 昀椀rst time I saw white coral beaches with overhanging palm trees and behind them dense impenetrable jungle, where until then, hardly any Westerners had set foot. Colourful coral reefs, where you swam among unreal coloured 昀椀sh while snorkelling, left a deep impression on me. Of course, this could not be otherwise in a country that consists of more than 80 per cent undisturbed tropical forest and has an unparalleled rich nature. J Bijen (Melipnini) Stingless Bee´s ap Smits heeft 41 jaar als boswachter ecologie bij het Nederlandse Staatsbosbeheer gewerkt. Sinds januari 2021 is hij met pensioen. Beroepsmatig was inventarisatie van 昀氀ora en fauna zijn dagelijks werk. Reeds in 1977 ondernam hij zijn eerste reis naar de Tropen. Dit waren de Indiase Andaman en Nicobar eilanden in de Golf van Bengalen. Daar maakte hij kennis met de enorme biodiversiteit van de tropische regenwouden. Vanaf dat moment heeft hij vele tropische (bos)gebieden van de wereld bezocht. Thuis in Nederland ontwikkelde hij tijdens het werk zijn passie voor insecten, am昀椀bieën en reptielen. Vooral de steekinsecten (Angeldragers) zoals mieren, bijen en wespen trokken zijn aandacht. De vaak bijzondere manier van aanpassing aan hun leefomgeving nodigde uit tot verdieping. Tijdens het inventarisatiewerk moesten er vaak foto’s worden gemaakt van o.a. kleine beestjes. Trekmier (Eciton burchellii) Army Ant Soldier J ap Smits worked for 41 years as a forester specialised in ecology at the Dutch Forestry Commission. He has been retired since January 2021. Professionally, inventorying 昀氀ora and fauna was his daily work. As early as 1977, he undertook his 昀椀rst trip to the Tropics. These were the Indian Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal. There he was introduced to the enormous biodiversity of the tropical rainforests. From then on, he visited many tropical (forest) areas of the world. At home in the Netherlands, while working, he developed his passion for insects, amphibians and reptiles. Especially stinging insects (Aculeates) such as ants, bees and wasps attracted his attention. Their often peculiar way of adapting to their habitats invited him to delve deeper. During inventory work, photos of small critters, among others, often had to be taken. This soon led to a hobby of nature and macro photography. Dit was tijdens de PGF reis Suriname-anders o.l.v. Peter Grobben. Op deze reis maakte ik ook kennis met Dick Lock die als kenner van de Surinaamse herpetofauna (slangen, hagedissen, padden en kikkers) een deel van de reis begeleidde. In deze zelfde periode nam Dick Lock zijn initiatief tot het oprichten van Snake Patrol Suriname. Ik vond dit een geweldig initiatief en ben Dick daarna via social media blijven volgen. Nu mijn interesse in Suriname was gewekt, leidde het contact met herpetoloog Dick tot het ondernemen van een gezamenlijke expeditie naar de Boven Tapanahony rivier (district Sipaliwini) in 2022. Voor mij is het altijd een droom geweest om een expeditie naar een “ Witte vlek op de kaart” te maken. Deze expeditie was dan ook een onovertro昀昀en avontuur. Het smaakte naar meer en er zouden snel meer Surinaamse avonturen volgen. My 昀椀rst introduction to Suriname I 昀椀rst became acquainted with Suriname in 2020. This was during the PGF trip Suriname-di昀昀erent led by Peter Grobben. On this trip, I also met Dick Lock who, as a connoisseur of Suriname’s herpetofauna (snakes, lizards, toads and frogs), accompanied part of the trip. During this saame period, Dick Lock took his initiative to establish Snake Patrol Suriname I thought this was a great initiative and continued to follow Dick via social media thereafter. Now that my interest in Suriname had been piqued, contact with herpetologist Dick led to undertaking a joint expedition to the Upper Tapanahony River (Sipaliwini district) in 2022. For me, it has always been a dream to make an expedition to a “white spot on the map”. This expedition was therefore an unbeatable adventure. Ik ga daarom vaak mee met fotoreizen, maar reis ook graag alleen. Er wordt wel eens beweerd dat je kijkend door je cameralens een reis niet echt beleeft. Daar ben ik het niet mee eens. Je hebt contact met de lokale bevolking en leert tijdens reizen veel van de plaatselijke cultuur en de omgeving. Daar worden de details van de dieren en planten die je fotografeert met je macrolens nog eens aan toegevoegd. Als ik thuiskom ga ik vervolgens op zoek naar de naam van de soort op de foto. Die heb je nodig wanneer je de foto publiceert. Je leert tegelijkertijd veel over de soort zelf. Ik laat me graag verwonderen door de rijkdom, variatie en vormen van het planten- en dierenleven. Die verwondering wordt uitvergroot door een macrolens. Urenlang kan ik met mijn fototoestel door het tropisch bos struinen en als het even kan ook als de nacht gevallen is. Bosmeester Bush master Nature photography O n my travels, nature photography usually comes 昀椀rst. I therefore often join photo trips, but also like to travel alone. It is sometimes said that looking through your camera lens you don’t really experience a trip. I disagree. You interact with the locals and learn a lot about the local a and environment while travelling. Added to that are the details of the animals and plants you photograph with your macro lens. When I get home, I then look for the naame of the species in the photo. You need that when you publish the photo. At the same time, you learn a lot about the species itself. I like to be amazed by the richness, variety and shapes of plant and animal life. That wonder is magni昀椀ed by a macro lens. For hours I can wander through the tropical forest with my camera and, if possible, even when night has fallen. Het is voor mij altijd een genot om op reis te kunnen zijn. Niet alleen de enorme soortenrijkdom van de tropen verwondert me als ecoloog, het zet me ook aan het denken over de aanpassingen die plant-en diersoorten door de evolutie heen hebben ondergaan en waarom ze dat gedaan hebben. Dit zegt veel over de omgeving en kan ook antwoorden geven op de vraag waarom soorten uit hun leefomgeving worden verdreven of plotseling verdwijnen. Suriname bestaat voor een heel groot deel uit tropisch bos en is daarom een land waar ik me meteen thuis voelde. Not always holyday T ravelling is sometimes quite tough and sometimes seems more like work than holiday. Being able to travel is always a joy for me. Not only does the vast species diversity of the tropics amaze me as an ecologist, it also makes me think about the adaptations that plant and animal species have undergone through evolution and why they did so. This says a lot about the environment and can also provide answers as to why species are driven out of their habitats or suddenly disappear. Ik had daar het geluk om bij het vrijlaten van enkele door Snake Patrol Suriname gevangen groene anaconda’s te zijn. Wat een prachtige dieren en ongelofelijk dat je zo dicht bij Paramaribo al kan kennismaken met de overvloedige diversiteit aan vogels en andere zoogdier- en plantensoorten. Grote groepen bruine kapucijnapen en doodshoofdaapjes laten zich goed vanaf de wandelpaden bekijken. De rijke plantengroei zorgt voor voldoende voedsel voor talrijke insecten en vogelsoorten waarbij je zelfs bij een eerste bezoek al verschillende zeldzaamheden tegenkomt. Grote hagedissoorten ritselen door het struikgewas en ik had het geluk om bij mijn eerste bezoek al een reuzenmiereneter tegen te komen. Bruine capucijnaap (Sopajus apella) Brown capucin monkey Een nachtelijke kanovaart door de smalle vaartjes vanuit Boutique Hotel Peperpot is echt een ‘must’ en met een ervaren natuurgids zie je dieren die je overdag niet tegenkomt. There I was lucky enough to be at the release of some green anacondas captured by Snake Patrol Suriname. What beautiful animals and incredible that so close to Paramaribo you can already get to know the abundant diversity of birds and other mammal and plant species. Large groups of brown capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys are easy to watch from the hiking trails. The rich vegetation provides ample food for numerous insects and bird species with several rarities being encountered even on a 昀椀rst visit. Large lizard species rustle through the bushes and I was lucky enough to encounter a giant anteater on my 昀椀rst visit. A night canoe trip through the narrow canals from Boutique Hotel Peperpot is really a must, and with an experienced nature guide you will see animals you won’t encounter during the day. Wat een prachtige plek! Naast een fantastisch uitzicht op het Brokopondomeer ervaar je onmiddellijk de enorme diversiteit aan tropische diersoorten. Je maakt er kennis met bijzondere vogelsoorten zoals de geschubde specht en de trompetvogel, maar ook apen zoals de witgezichtsaki’s en brulapen laten zich graag van dichtbij zien. Wanneer je zoals ik geïnteresseerd bent in het wat kleinere grut zoals slangen, kikkers en insecten én je hebt een goede natuurgids die daar ook kennis van en aandacht voor heeft, gaat er helemaal een wereld voor je open. Op Brownsberg kun je een mystieke ochtendwandeling naar het uitzichtpunt maken. Daarbij word je niet zelden begeleid door een koor van luid roepende pijlgi昀欀ikkers. Je kunt een ontdekkingstocht naar een van de nabijgelegen watervallen maken waar je zomaar een zoetwaterkrab tegen kan komen. Als je het aandurft kun je ook onder begeleiding van een gids ’s avonds het geheime nachtleven van het tropische woud beleven. ......................... ......................... Brownsberg O ne of the locations I have visited several times is Brownsberg Nature Park. What a wonderful place! Besides a fantastic view of Lake Brokopondo, you immediately experience the enormous diversity of tropical species. You will be introduced to unusual bird species such as the waved woodpecker and the grey-winged trumpeter bird, but monkeys such as white-faced Sakis and red howler monkeys also like to be seen up close. If, like me, you are interested in the smaller animals like snakes, frogs and insects, and you have a good nature guide who knows and cares about them, a whole new world will open up for you. At Brownsberg, you can take a mystical morning walk to the viewpoint. While doing so, you are not infrequently accompanied by a chorus of loudly calling poison dart frogs. You can go on an exploration to one of the nearby waterfalls where you might just come across a freshwater crab. If you dare, you can also experience the secret nightlife of the tropical forest in the evening with a guide. Dit is waarom ik daar graag naar terugkeer. Zo wandelde ik elke morgen naar de brug over de Kleine Saramacca rivier. In de berm langs de weg vond ik een divers kleurenpalet aan bloeiende planten en struiken. Ik bleef mij verwonderen over de vele vlindersoorten die door deze kleurenpracht werden aangetrokken. In de bosranden kwetterden de vogels en hamerden de spechten. De overvloed aan insecten, bloemen en vruchten in het ongestoorde regenwoud vormde voor hen een gevarieerd en uitgebreid ontbijt. Na een korte rit met een 4x4 kun je naar de basis van de Fredberg waar de tracks naar de top en de baltsplaats van de oranje rotshaan beginnen. Als lie昀栀ebber van slangen en kikkers was de nachtelijke beklimming van de Fredberg een avontuur op zich. ‘s Nachts geeft het tropisch bos veel van zijn natuurlijke schatten prijs. This is why I love returning there. For instance, every morning I walked to the bridge over the Little Saramacca River. On the roadside verge, I found a diverse colour palette of 昀氀owering plants and shrubs. I kept marvelling at the many butter昀氀y species attracted by this array of colours. In the forest edges, birds twittered and woodpeckers hammered. The abundance of insects, 昀氀owers and fruits in the undisturbed rainforest provided a varied and sumptuous breakfast for them. Voordat we vanuit het dorp de rivier op mochten gaan was er de gebruikelijke brie昀椀ng met de kapitein of dorpshoofd en een lid van de dorpsraad. Tijdens dit gesprek kregen we de do’s en dont’s te horen waaraan we ons als gasten van het regenwoud dienden te houden. Met een kleine crew van inheemse indianen voeren we de volgende dag per boot stroomopwaarts de rivier op. We passeerden daarbij een aantal stevige sula’s (stroomversnellingen) en op plaatsen waar de Tapanahony rivier versmalde moesten soms omgevallen bomen worden verwijderd die de doorgang versperden. Onze overnachtingsplek bestond uit niets anders dan een open plek op de oever daar waar we uit de boot konden stappen en er net genoeg plaats was om onze hangmatten op te hangen. Dit waren ook de plekken waar we korte uitstapjes maakten om de natuur te verkennen. Hier toonde het ongestoorde regenwoud haar geheimen pas echt. Vogels, am昀椀bieën, reptielen en vele insecten in alle soorten en maten. Ons voedsel bestond voornamelijk uit vers gevangen vis, fruit en versgebakken cassavebrood dat we in het dorp hadden ingeslagen. Het was een bijzondere ervaring om op plekken te komen waar voorheen alleen de inheemse bevolking ons voor was gegaan. Ver van alle gemakken die ik in Nederland gewend was om me heen te hebben, moest ik mijn lot nu in handen leggen van mijn gids en de lokale indianencrew. Ik verkeerde in een totaal andere wereld die ik vreemd genoeg niet als bedreigend ervaarde. Op eerdere verre reizen naar Azië, Afrika en Zuid-Amerika had ik al kennis gemaakt met tropisch regenwoud. Ook had ik al eens in een hangmat de nacht in het regenwoud doorgebracht. Deze tocht diep in het Surinaamse binnenland was anders en overtrof al mijn eerdere ervaringen. Een droom was werkelijkheid geworden. y Tapanahony adventure began with a 昀氀ight from Zorg en Hoop airport in Paramaribo to Pelelu Tepu, a village of indigenous Indians on the Tapanahony River in southern Suriname near the border with Brazil. Before we were allowed to go up the river from the village, there was the usual brie昀椀ng with the captain or village chief and a member of the village council. During this talk, we were told the do’s and dont’s we needed to adhere to as guests of the rainforest. The next day, with a small crew of indigenous Indians, we sailed upriver by boat. In the process, we passed a number of strong sulas (rapids) and in places where the Tapanahony River narrowed, fallen trees that blocked the passage sometimes had to be removed. Our overnight spot consisted of nothing but a clearing on the bank there where we could get o昀昀 the boat and there was just enough room to hang our hammocks. These were also the spots where we made short trips to explore nature. It was here that the undisturbed rainforest really showed its secrets. Birds, amphibians, reptiles and many insects of all shapes and sizes. Our food consisted mainly of freshly caught 昀椀sh, fruit and freshly baked cassava bread we had stocked in the village. It was an extraordinary experience to be in places where previously only the indigenous people had gone before us. Far from all the comforts I was used to having around me in the Netherlands, I now had to put my fate in the hands of my guide and the local Indian crew. I was in a totally di昀昀erent world that I strangely did not experience as threatening. On previous distant travels to Asia, Africa and South America, I had already been introduced to tropical rainforests. I had also spent the night in a hammock in the rainforest before. This trip deep into the Surinamese interior was di昀昀erent and surpassed all my previous experiences. Je hebt daar niet zelden kans om een tapir of boshert tegen te komen. Voor een Puma of jaguar moet je wat meer geluk hebben. Het is dagelijks mogelijk om een boottocht over de Kabalebo rivier te maken waarbij je de oevers en bosranden af kunt speuren naar reuzenotters, apen, kaaimannen, luiaards en de vele vogelsoorten waaronder de zeldzame harpijarend die hier met regelmaat wordt waargenomen. Met de boot kun je ook enkele bijzondere plekken langs de rivier bezoeken zoals de Moi moi waterval. Na een korte wandeling opent het bos zich plotseling en zie je de waterval in volle glorie voor je verschijnen. Je kunt er een heerlijk verkoelend bad nemen of als natuurfotograaf mooie plaatjes schieten. De poel onder aan de waterval herbergt een dwergkaaiman die hier al jaren zijn eigen paradijsje heeft gevonden. Ik heb de Moi moi waterval meerdere malen bezocht om dit bijzondere reptiel op de foto vast te kunnen leggen. De natuur is voor mij zeker een reden om vaker naar Suriname terug te keren. Er valt keer op keer nog veel te ontdekken. From here you can take walks or a canoe trip with a local guide. I loved walking down the runway in the 昀椀rst light of morning with the camera at the ready. You often have the chance to encounter a Tapir or Red Brocket. You have to be a bit more lucky to spot a Puma or Jaguar. It is possible to take a daily boat trip on the Kabalebo River where you can search the banks and Forest edges for Giant River Otters, Red Howler Monkeys, Caimans, Sloths and the many bird species including the rare Harpy Eagle that is regularly sighted here. By boat you can also visit some special places along the river such as the Moi Moi waterfall. After a short walk, the forest suddenly opens up and you see the waterfall appear in all its glory in front of you. There you can take a nice cooling bath or shoot nice pictures as a nature photographer. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall is home to a Caiman who has found his own paradise here for years. I have visited the Moi Moi waterfall several times to photograph this special reptile. The Surinamese nature is certainly a reason for me to return more often. Een zeer toepasselijke naam voor deze moderne glamping op een voormalige plantage aan de Surinamerivier. Je kunt er nagenoeg alleen per bootje komen. Overnachten doe je in een ruime tweepersoons tent. De ontvangst is allerhartelijkst en de accommodatie is netjes en erg mooi gestyled. Seliba is van alle gemakken voorzien zoals een zwembad en hottub voor de gasten die graag ‘chillen’ en wat meer van luxe houden. Voor de meer avontuurlijk ingestelde mens of natuurfotograaf zoals ik heeft Seliba nog veel meer te bieden. Er liggen een aantal fantastische tracks waar je onder begeleiding van een gids zowel een dag- als avondwandeling kunt maken voor de complete Surinaamse wilderniservaring. Mijn bevriende vogelaars waren niet bij het zwembad weg te slaan omdat ze daar goed overzicht hadden over het open bos waar zij de ene naar de andere bijzondere vogelsoort konden spotten. Ikzelf had meer interesse in de wandeltracks vanuit Seliba waar ik zowel tropische insecten evenals am昀椀bieën en reptielen kon fotograferen. Dat glampingbeheerders Jordy en Fenne zelf ook lie昀栀ebbers en kenners zijn van de Surinaamse (herpeto) fauna maakte onze ontdekkingstochten alleen maar interessanter. Kortom, een plek die je niet kunt overslaan als je van de Surinaamse natuur wil genieten. he name Seliba means ‘along the water’. A very appropriate name for this modern glamping on a former plantation on the Suriname River. You can get there almost exclusively by boat. You spend the night in a spacious two-person tent. The welcome is warm and the accommodation is neat and very nicely styled. Seliba is fully equipped, with a swimming pool and hot tub for guests who like to chill out and are more into luxury. For the more adventurous or nature photographer like me, Seliba has a lot more to o昀昀er. There are some fantastic tracks where you can go on both day and evening hikes with a guide for the complete Surinamese wilderness experience. My birdwatching friends were all over the pool as they had a good overview of the open forest where they could spot one special bird species after another. I myself was more interested in the hiking trails from Seliba where I could photograph tropical insects as well as amphibians and reptiles. The fact that glamping managers Jordy and Fenne themselves are lovers and connoisseurs of the Surinamese (herpeto) fauna only made our explorations more interesting. Galibi is een door het gelijknamige natuurgebied omgeven dorp waar de Marowijne de Atlantisch Oceaan in stroomt. Het dorp staat bekend om zijn met palmen begroeide witte stranden. De mooiste van Suriname en sinds mensenheugenis in gebruik door een aantal soorten reuzenzeeschildpadden die er hun eieren komen leggen. Beide zijn voor veel bezoekers een aanleiding om het inheemse Caraïbse indianendorp te bezoeken. Het rustieke dorpje is uitsluitend met de boot te bereiken. In ons geval was dat de schoolboot die op dagelijkse basis de dorpskinderen in drie kwartier naar en van school in Albina vervoert. Ons onderkomen voor een aantal dagen was de Myrysji lodge. Een eenvoudige accommodatie aan de uiterste punt van het Christiaankondre deel van het dorp. Nog geen 20 passen van het strand. I I su magazine su magazine Van daaruit ondernamen we bootexcursies naar de legstranden van de zeeschildpadden en naar de Tijgerbank, een brede begroeide zandplaat voor de kust. Tussen februari en juli komen de reuzenschildpadden voornamelijk ’s nachts aan land om hun eieren in een zelf gegraven kuil te leggen. Tijdens het heetst van de dag spendeerden we onze tijd tussen de hutten en kostgrondjes van het dorp en zochten verkoeling tussen de enorme mangrovebomen met prachtige doorkijkjes naar zee. Als bezoeker is het dorpsmuseumpje zeker aan te raden. De enthousiaste beheerster woont naast het museum en vertelt je over de bijzondere artefacten die er te zien zijn en het dorpsleven. Galibi is a village surrounded by the nature reserve of the same name where the Marowijne 昀氀ows into the Atlantic Ocean. The village is known for its palm-covered white beaches. The most beautiful in Suriname and used since time immemorial by several species of giant sea turtles that come to lay their eggs there. Both are reasons for many visitors to visit the indigenous Caraib indians village. The rustic village can only be reached by boat. In our case, that was the school boat that transports village children to and from school in Albina in three quarters of an hour on a daily basis. Our accommodation for a few days was the Myrysjilodge . A simple accommodation at the far end of the Christiaankondre part of the village. Less than 20 paces from the beach. From there, we undertook boat excursions to sea turtle laying beaches and to Tiger Bank, a wide overgrown sandbank o昀昀 the coast. Between February and July, the giant turtles come ashore mainly at night to lay their eggs in a self-dug pit. During the heat of the day, we spent our time among the village’s huts and boarding grounds, seeking coolness among the huge mangrove trees with beautiful vistas out to sea. Even ten oosten van de riviermonding ligt de grote watervlakte Bigi Pan, wat ‘groot meer’ betekent. Met een totale oppervlakte van ruim 135.000 ha is het een van de belangrijkste watervogelgebieden van Suriname. We overnachtten in Mantje’s Bigi Pan Lodge, een van de kunstmatig aangelegde houten lodges in de lagune. De tweepersoonskamers zijn eenvoudig maar schoon. Een kok, gids en bootsman zijn bij de reis inbegrepen. Je komt er met de boot via het aanvoerkanaal vanuit Nieuw Nickerie. De bijna twee uur durende boottocht begint bij de start al met een uitdaging I I su magazine su magazine omdat de boot over de dijk het kanaal overgeheveld moet worden. De oevers van het kanaal zijn rijk begroeid waardoor je met een beetje geluk al de nodige bijzondere vogelsoorten kunt waarnemen. Wij verbleven twee nachten in de lodge van waaruit we verschillende boottochten door de moerasbossen maakten. Bigi Pan herbergt zowel stand- als trekvogels, a昀栀ankelijk van het seizoen en de getijden. Een van de hoogtepunten was de Amerikaanse oehoe die er gedurende het hele jaar in de dichte moerasbossen leeft. Visarenden en de slakkenwouw laten zich met regelmaat zien. Flamingo’s, rode ibissen en rode lepelaars komen in groepen voorbijgevlogen tussen slaapplaats en foeragegebied. Na zonsondergang kun je tijdens een boottocht door het kanaal slangen spotten die zich ophouden tussen de dichte oevervegetatie. Just east of the river mouth is the vast expanse of water Bigi Pan, meaning ‘big lake’. With a total area of over 135,000 ha, it is one of Suriname’s most important waterbird areas. We stayed overnight at Mantje’s Bigi Pan Lodge, one of the arti昀椀cial wooden lodges in the lagoon. The double rooms are simple but clean. A cook, guide and boatman are included in the trip. You get there by boat via the feeder canal from New Nickerie. The nearly two-hour boat trip starts with a challenge at the start as the boat has to be lifted over the embankment into the canal. The banks of the canal are richly vegetated so with a bit of luck you can already observe the necessary special bird species. We stayed two nights at the lodge from where we took several boat trips through the swamp forests. Bigi Pan is home to both resident and migratory birds, depending on the season and tides. One of the highlights was the American eagle owl that lives there throughout the year in the dense swamp forests. Ospreys and the snail kite show up with regularity. Flamingos, red ibis and red spoonbills 昀氀y by in groups between roosting and foraging areas. After sunset, on a boat trip through the canal, you can spot snakes hiding among the dense riparian vegetation. Bigi Pan is one of Suriname’s natural gems and de昀椀nitely worth a visit. Bijzondere natuur aan de Corantijnrivier O p onze route naar de Wonotobovallen in de Corantijnrivier in Natuurpark Wannawiro en Avanaverovallen in de Kabaleborivier deden we het inheemse Arowakken dorp Apoera aan. Het dorp grenst aan het aan de overzijde van de rivier gelegen Guyana. Er is geen brug dus alle verkeer gaat per boot. Je kunt Apoera ook via de zuidelijke Oost-West-wegverbinding van Paramaribo via Witagron bereiken. De meeste bezoekers doen het dorp echter met de boot aan. Er zijn in Apoera enkele eenvoudige accommodaties waar je gewoon in een bed kan overnachten. Vanuit het dorp kun je uitstapjes naar het omliggende regenwoud maken. Er is een verlaten spoorwegwerkplaats van de enige ooit in Suriname aangelegde transportspoorweg vanuit het Bakhuisgebergte naar Apoera. De spoorlijn is nooit echt in gebruik genomen en wordt inclusief de werkplaats langzaam door de natuur overgenomen. Een van de meest interessante uitstapjes was een boottocht over de Corantijn naar wat eilandjes in de rivier en de Kaboerikreek. 32 32 I I su magazine su magazine We gingen hier op zoek naar de Hoatzin of stinkvogel, een primitieve vogelsoort die voornamelijk van de bladeren van de mokomoko plant leeft. Deze plant groeit langs de rivier- en kreekoevers. Deze bijzondere vogel kun je maar op enkele plaatsen in West-Suriname vinden. Langs de rivieroever ligt ook de grootste houtzagerij van Suriname waar de enorme stammen van de bekendste Surinaamse houtsoorten zoals ijzerhard, groenhart, basralocus, krappa en walaba verzaagd worden. Voor de vogelaars onder ons een prima plek om wat pleviersoorten te spotten. De natuur in de omgeving is prachtig en Apoera is naast een doorreisstation voor eerdergenoemde locatie ook een uitvalsbasis voor bezoeken aan het Bakhuisgebergte en de Blanche Marie vallen. Enkele dorpjes onderweg zijn zeker de moeite waard om even halt te houden. Er wacht je een gastvrije ontvangst door de inheemse bevolking. ׉ 7cassandra://a_NjV0bS9gIIteoXXomgq_WPcmx45R9zw4W8U2J0qQAN`e> ׉EDrievingerigeluiaard (Bradypus tridactylus), Pale-throutedSloth A lost railway and primitive birds on the Corantine River O n our route to the Wonotobo Falls in the Corantine River in Wannawiro Nature Park and Avanavero Falls in the Kabalebo River, we visited the indigenous Arowak village of Apoera. The village borders Guyana on the other side of the river. There is no bridge so all tra昀케c goes by boat. You can also reach Apoera via the southern East-West road link from Paramaribo via Witagron. However, most visitors arrive at the village by boat. There are some simple accommodations in Apoera where you can just spend the night in a bed. From the village, you can take trips to exploit the surrounding rainforest. There is an abandoned railway work station of the only transport railway ever built in Suriname from the Bakhuis Mountains to Apoera. The railway was never actually put into use and, including the workstation, is slowly being taken over by nature. One of the most interesting excursions was a boat trip down the Corantijn to some islets in the river and the Kaboerikreek. We went here in search of the Hoatzin or stink bird, a primitive species of bird that lives mainly o昀昀 the leaves of the mokomoko plant. This plant grows along the river and creek banks. This particular bird can only be found in a few places in Western Suriname. Along the riverbank is also Suriname’s largest sawmill where the huge logs of Suriname’s best-known woods such as ironwood, greenheart, basra locus, krappa and walaba are sawn. For the birdwatchers among us, a great place to spot some plover species. Nature in the area is beautiful and Apoera, besides being a transit station for the aforementioned location, is also a base for visits to the Bakhuis Mountains and the Blanche Marie falls. Some villages along the way are de昀椀nitely worth a stop. A welcoming reception by the indigenous people awaits you. The sailing took longer than planned. The boat turned out to be too light for our suitcases and heavy photo bags. Moreover, the boat turned out not to be completely waterproof, made water and was therefore too heavy to plan. As a result, we only sailed at half power. Sailing in the dark on this river is not wise so we spent the night in hammocks at an abandoned hunter’s camp. The next day, we arrived at the simple lodge. We all slept on the 昀椀rst 昀氀oor overlooking the falls. We spent the next few days on forest walks and visited a number of waterfalls and fast-昀氀owing sulas . At night, we explored the rich nightlife on and around the riverbanks. On the 昀氀at rock outcrops, reached via a short forest walk, you can get up close to the roaring rapids. The rushing water provides coolness and a special 昀氀oral display. It was quite an expedition to reach these impressive widest and longest waterfalls and sulas over 400 km upstream. 34 It was more than worth it to be able to visit this little paradise in the deep interior of Suriname. I I su magazine su magazine a een overnachting in Apoera vervolgden we onze reis over de Corantijnrivier richting de Wonotobovallen. Het varen duurde langer dan gepland. De boot bleek te licht voor onze ko昀昀ers en zware fototassen. Bovendien bleek de boot niet helemaal waterdicht, maakte water en was daardoor te zwaar om te planeren. We voeren hierdoor maar op halve kracht. In het donker varen op deze rivier is niet verstandig dus overnachtten we in hangmatten op een verlaten jagerskampje. De volgende dag arriveerden we bij de eenvoudige lodge. We sliepen allemaal op de eerste verdieping met uitzicht op de watervallen. Wij brachten de volgende dagen door met boswandelingen en we bezochten een aantal watervallen en snelstromende sula’s. ’s Nachts gingen we op zoek naar het rijke nachtleven op en rond de rivieroevers. Op de vlakke rotspartijen, die je bereikt via een korte boswandeling, kun je de bruisende stroomversnellingen tot dichtbij benaderen. Het opstuivende water zorgt voor verkoeling en een bijzondere bloemenpracht. Het was een hele expeditie om deze indrukwekkende breedste en langste watervallen en sula’s ruim 400 km stroomopwaarts te bereiken. Gelukkig was er ruim de tijd uitgetrokken voor deze rit die normaal zo’n 2,5 uur in beslag neemt. Op de mooiste plekjes langs de route besloten we daarom te gaan wandelen terwijl het busje langzaam volgde. Een goede keuze. De route loopt door ongestoord tropisch bos. Langs weelderig en rijk met bloemen begroeide bosranden en bermen zagen we prachtige vlinders, libellen en orchideebijen. Ook de vogelaars konden zeer tevreden een aantal nieuwe soorten aan hun lijst toevoegen. De rit eindigt bij de Kabalebo rivier waar we overstapten voor een korte kanovaart. Na een kleine 20 minuten varen bereikten we het eiland waarop de Wanawirolodge zich bevindt. Het eiland is omgeven door sula’s waarvan het geluid overal en altijd hoorbaar is. Het is een klein paradijsje omgeven door water en ongestoord tropisch regenwoud. Een familie brulapen volgde ons nieuwsgierig vanuit de hoge bomen rond de lodge. De volgende dagen maakten we diverse uitstapjes naar de omgeving en we voeren langs de rivieroevers op zoek naar vogels en ander waterwild. We bezochten een rots met petrogliefen, langgeleden door de inheemse bevolking in de rots uitgekerfd. Onze in am昀椀bieën en reptielen gespecialiseerde gids Jean-Pierre Veira vond een prachtig gekleurde schildersgi昀欀ikker. In het bos lag een pontonboot op zijn kant. Het herinnerde ons aan recente overstromingen van deze rivier die bij hevige regenval erg onstuimig kan zijn. Later op de avond, terwijl een deel van de groep al op één oor lag , gingen de ‘diehards’ onder leiding van onze gids nog een rondje eiland doen. We vonden verschillende labaria’s (lanspuntslangen), boomkikkers en nachtvlinders waarvan de ogen helder oplichtten in onze hoofdlamp. Ook de grote kaaiman, die er bij de landing op het eiland onmiddellijk vandoor ging, liet zich nu uitgebreid bewonderen. Op een tiental meters van het verblijf aan de rivieroever waren een aantal libellensoorten, waaronder enkele kreekju昀昀ers, druk bezig met het jagen op muggen en vliegjes. Ze jagen meestal vanaf het uiteinde van een takje of waterplant. De laatste zonnestralen hulden het tere insect in een bronsrode kleur. In de Surinaamse natuur hoef je meestal niet ver te zoeken naar dit soort juweeltjes. Fortunately, ample time was allotted for this ride, which normally takes about 2.5 hours. So at the most beautiful spots along the route, we decided to go for a walk while the van slowly followed. A good choice. The route runs through undisturbed tropical forest. Along lush and 昀氀ower-rich forest edges and roadsides, we saw beautiful butter昀氀ies, dragon昀氀ies and orchid bees. The birdwatchers too could very happily add several new species to their list. The drive ended at the Kabalebo River where we changed for a short canoe ride. After about 20 minutes of boating, we reached the island on which the Wannawirolodge is located. The island lies in between Sulas whose sound can be heard anywhere and everywhere. It is a small paradise surrounded by water and undisturbed tropical rainforest. A family of howler monkeys followed us curiously from the tall trees around the lodge. Over the next few days, we made several excursions into the surrounding area, cruising the riverbanks in search of birds and other aquatic wildlife. We visited a rock with petroglyphs, long ago carved into the rock by indigenous people. Our guide specialised in amphibians and reptiles found a beautifully coloured dyeing poison dart frog. In the forest, a pontoon boat lay on its side. It reminded us of recent 昀氀oods of this river that can be very turbulent during heavy rains. Later in the evening, while some of the group was already lying on one ear, the ‘diehards’ led by our guide went for another island tour. We found several Labaria snakes (common lancehead), tree frogs and moths whose eyes lit up brightly in our headlights. Even the large caiman, which immediately took o昀昀 when we landed on the island, now allowed itself to be extensively admired. About 10 metres from the riverbank enclosure, a number of dragon昀氀y species, including some Hetaerina Damsel昀氀ies, were busy hunting mosquitoes and 昀氀ies. They usually hunt from the end of a twig or water plant. The last rays of the sun cloaked the delicate insect in a bronze-red colour. In Surinamese nature, you usually don’t have to look far for such gems. You can just sit on a stone and let nature come to you. Van maart tot en met juli komen hier ook zeeschildpadden aan land om hun eieren te leggen. Hiervoor is het ook mogelijk het uitstapje ’s nachts te maken. Overdag kun je de bootexcursie afronden met een bezoekje aan Paramaribo stad of aan Fabian Esajas, een trotse bijenhouder in Weg naar Zee, die je graag zijn bijzondere Parwahoning van de zwarte mangrove wil laten proeven en je rondleidt in zijn passievruchtengaard of kustbeschermingsproject. Sutopia Resort is ook een goede uitvalsbasis om Natuurreservaat Peperpot te bezoeken. Je kunt er een 昀椀ets huren of door het reservaat wandelen. Ook een kanotocht behoort tot de mogelijkheden. From here you can take an excursion by boat to Braamspunt.
