DOGS AT THE CLUBHOUSE
Per the Lake Ashton CDD Amenity Policy, dogs and all
other pets (with the exception of service dogs) are not
permitted at the Amenity Facilities. If you are planning
on coming to the amenities for any reason please keep
this policy in mind. If a service dog is in the amenities
without a vest on, Security or Staff will assume it is a
pet and will inform you of this policy, so please be
patient as they are simply following protocol. The
Amenity Policy also states that patrons are responsible
for picking up after all pets and disposing of any waste
in a designated pet waste receptacle. Please keep this
in mind when walking your dog around the amenities.
Doggy bags and a throw-away station are located on
the pathway on the West side of the Clubhouse Tennis
Courts.

Coffee and may be donated to local charities if not
claimed.

Friendship is one of the many reasons Lake Ashton is
"Simply the Best". It is what helps you through the hard
times and makes the good times lasting memories. There
are many avenues available to facilitate the growth of
existing friendships and assist in the formation of new
friendships, as seen in this edition of the LA Times. With
the community at build-out and new residents always
moving in, there are many new people to meet. Be sure to
reach out to new neighbors and welcome them to the
community! You never know why a person moved to Lake
Ashton but you may make that decision the best one they
ever made! Love one another, treat each other with
respect, and live each day to its fullest.
There was a Joint Board of Supervisors meeting on
January 20 where the Joint Amenity Facilities Policies was
approved and is now posted on lakeashtoncdd.com.
Starting again in March, articles will be included in the LA
Times each month highlighting a different section of the
policy so residents become familiar with the policies.
Please contact Community Director Christine Wells
at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions.
At the January meeting, LACDD Supervisors approved the Restaurant lease, with changes. Residents should
stay tuned to email blasts for more information regarding the opening date for Charm City at Lake Ashton.
Quotes to repair some of the Restaurant refrigeration equipment, in addition to a quote to purchase
replacement AED units were approved. There is an AED unit in the Clubhouse hallway near the restrooms and
on the Roving Security golf cart. Supervisors and Staff continually evaluate cost
savings measures at the Clubhouse. An update is given at each Board of
Supervisors meeting under the Community Director report. A wrap up report of
additional actions taken was sent out January 24 via email blast.
The first Annual Club Expo was held in the
Clubhouse Ballroom on January 17. It was a
huge success with many positive comments
from facilitators and residents. Due to the
overwhelming success of the Club Expo, this
will become an annual event at the Clubhouse
so that all Lake Ashton Clubs, Groups, and
Organizations will have a chance to be part of
it. Thank you to all the facilitator volunteers that came out to make this a success!
It was great seeing everyone working together.
׉	7cassandra://RH4XV9ijjxfVO5UF-9yUT79hP3BDbQr2sWzF7YFRdqk1`cڻH$s_׉E	THANK YOU,
DAVID
HARRISON!
Those who have ever
attended a Monday
Coffee most likely have had the pleasure of hearing a
Blast from the Past presentation, where David took
everyone 40 years back in time to reminisce about
special events, superstars that turn 40, those that
have passed on, and even the number 1 song for the
month. If you are lucky you may have even had the
chance to hear him sing a number 1 song. David
retired from giving the "Blast from the Past"
presentations at the end of 2022 after 14 years.
Although he will not be doing Blast from the Past
presentations any longer at Monday Coffee, residents
can still say hi to him at the Clubhouse
Activities Office on Thursdays from noon - 2 pm.
David, thank you for all you do for Lake Ashton!
THANK YOU!
A special Thank you! to the
Lake Ashton Performing Arts
Corporation (LAPAC) for their help
with the Rockin' New Year's Eve
Party at the Clubhouse. Thank you
to: Mark Graham and David Greer
for their help from start to finish
for this event. They did everything
from hanging balloons to building
our set and everything in
between. The amazing artist Patty
Wallner hand painted/created the
Times Square set, graffiti wall, and
the trees in "Central Park". Marlon Nettleton, our
"MC" for the night. Lynn Shelton, our Times Square
Ball curator and design coordinator. Cheryl
Winchester for securing/organizing the resident street
performers and thank you to the street performers
themselves! Mary Harrison and Gail Prowant for
creating our amazing street signs and everyone else
that had a hand in this event. You all are so
appreciated. There were many volunteer hours
invested in making this event a success and we thank
you all.
BEST WISHES TO YOU,
MARY BOSMAN!
Mary began her tenure at Lake Ashton working for
the developer at the Clubhouse. She took on many
responsibilities and ultimately became the Community
Director for LAIICDD. She has truly put her blood,
sweat, and tears into making Lake Ashton "Simply the
Best" Mary has been an integral part of the Lake
Ashton community for
over 17 years and we
are all going to miss
her tremendously. We
wish her an enjoyable
retirement with many
more happy memories
to come! Thank you for
all you have done for
Lake Ashton! Your
work will definitely

It’s easy to look back after 17 years and recall some great times with many great people at Lake Ashton.
Laughing (a lot), crying, and plenty of feelings in between have been shared! Years of austerity and years a
bit more comfortable for LA II CDD have proven interesting to say the least. The success of the LA II CDD
over the years has been in large part, to its commonsense leadership by our Board of Directors. Some
names have changed but the underlying vision to bring an enhanced quality of life to residents without
breaking the bank/raising assessments has remained the same. Our loyal staff and volunteers have
contributed in many ways to the ongoing success of operations and activities. I have two parting
requests…please be kind and respect one another and help my successor out whenever possible. I will
certainly miss Lake Ashton staff and of course, you residents! If you’re traveling through South Carolina,
look us up…you’re always welcome!
Happy Valentine’s Day! The HFC will be
hosting several activities this month to
promote caring. Dances, seminars, and the
introduction of new PT, OT, ST, and other
services will be among them. The new roof
on the HFC will be completed by the time
this goes to press and I’d like to thank all
our wonderful staff and residents who
endured gracefully, the unavoidable
inconveniences during that time. The cart
bridge by the driving range will also have
been completed. Maintenance will have
their canopy up to preserve the pipes,
heaters, and pumps from sun damage at the
HFC also. The finalizing of the Joint
Amenities Policies document has been a
long, and sometimes tedious effort to
complete, but it has recently happened.
Always the goal was to unify Lake Ashton
and clarify how the Amenities run smoothly.

graduating this year is 135, of which 50 have no
family! Make sure and sign the banner of
congratulations. Any donation large or small is greatly
appreciated. Checks, gift cards or domestic items can
be dropped off at the Clubhouse or HFC Activities

What to expect
We’ll meet with you for an in-depth conversation to get to know you and your unique
situation. We’ll then gather the necessary documents to analyze your financials, including:
current investments, risk exposure, tax liability, fees and charges. We’ll then invite you
back to share our findings on where you are now, and where you’re headed. From there,
one of three things will happen:
1. We confirm you’re on track and advise you to stay the course.
2. We find that you could better your situation and feel we could offer alternative
strategies that better address your needs.
3. We find gaps in your current plan, but don’t feel we are the best fit. We’ll be happy
to recommend another advisor who can help.

The Great Horned Owl is
bird more likely to be heard
than seen in Lake
Ashton. Residents outside at
dawn and dusk may actually
glimpse one of these majestic owls. They occur in
most of North America and are known as the
"hoot owl." Not all owls actually "hoot," but the
Great Horned does. The male's higher voice calls
out and the deep-voiced female replies. In the
hawk and owl world the females are larger than
the males. Great Horned Owls have nested in
Lake Ashton and are agreeable neighbors helping
with rodent control. They are a striking bird with
piercing yellow eyes, brown, black and white
mottled feathers and "ear tufts" which aren't ears
at all. Asymmetrically placed ears and a facial disk
help these owls triangulate sounds to find their
prey at night. Seen in flight, they resemble a barrel
with wings.
Scene About Town
Many Lake Ashton residents enjoy fishing in the
community's ponds. Because of the frequency of
herbicide and fertilizer treatments that may cause
run-off into the ponds, the district has a catch and
release policy for all fish caught in ponds in Lake
Ashton. Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, channel catfish,
and Tilapia are the most common fish species in
ponds. Largemouth Bass are fun to catch and are a
popular sport fish in the community. These fish are
predators that need a lot of small fish to eat in
order to stay healthy and grow. A Bluegill is an
example of a prey species. Tilapia is an invasive
fish native to Africa. This species is a warm-water
fish that cannot survive in water temperatures
below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Residents may
notice dead Tilapia along their pond's shore line
during cold spells. Email Matt with any questions
or concerns at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.
Send a picture of any fish caught in ponds or lakes in
Lake Ashton, along with your name, the lake or pond
that it was caught in, as well as the type
of fish caught and any measurements (length and/or
weight) to valerie@lakeashtoncdd.com to be featured in
the next edition of the LA Times. We would like to see
your smiley face as well, so have someone snap a pic of
you or take a selfie with your fish!

known as the blazing star or gayfeather. Like many
Native Plants, it is quite happy to receive little care
once established. It prefers full sun and welldrained
soil but does well in sandy conditions. The
liatris can grow to a variety of heights. It’s best to
cut back in mid-summer to reduce its height. You’ll
see blooms from July-August. It’s an excellent plant
to dry for flower arrangements. This “star” is also
easy to grow from seed. The liatris is a great flower
for beginners. It’s easy to grow once it’s watered
until it’s first established. Like many native flowers,
the blazing star attracts both bees and
hummingbirds. Just space between 12-15 inches
and enjoy these showy plants.

Harper's Weekly. One image, known as "The
Scourged Back," which shows Peter’s bare back

BIGGER THAN AFRICA
2018 | NR | 1H 30MIN
When the slave boats docked in
the Americas, Cuba and the
Caribbean, hundreds of cultures
and religions came with the Africans but only one
survived the plantations. To date, the most
pronounced African Culture of the Diasporas
remains the culture of the Yoruba. From Brazil to
Trinidad, the United States to Cuba, Haiti and the
entire Caribbean, this West African culture
dominates all other Cultures of Africa and could
be said to have survived the plantations for
hundreds of years. Bigger Than Africa follows the
trans-Atlantic slave trade route from West Africa
to six different countries — USA, Nigeria, Brazil,
Republic of Benin, Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba
— to explore and find reasons for the survival of
this particular West African Culture.

LAMGA
By David Kubissa
The LA Men’s Golf Association kicked off another
season of league play on January 4 with more than
140 golfers signed up to play and even more joining
as this article goes to press. Despite a couple of
chilly and foggy mornings, the 2023 season has
jumped off to a hot start with more creative games
to come in February.
This will be another year of the Red Hoagland
Hyundai Challenge. Last year’s winners, announced
in late December, were in order of finish: 1. Jim
Simpson; 2. Donn Yasz; 3. Paul Panone; 4. Dan Baun.
They won gift certificates to the Pro Shop, all
donated by Red Hoagland Hyundai.
As the new season unfolded in January, the LAMGA
Board of Directors plunged headlong into planning
mode for the 2023 LAMGA Member-Guest
Tournament, taking place from March 9 – 11. Much
of the work in the early stages involves not only
tournament logistics but also ensuring sponsor
support.
Last month’s article saluted major sponsors, such as
Red Hoagland Hyundai, that have generously
supported the tournament in the past. This month
we want to acknowledge a few more auto
dealerships: Hill Nissan; Lakes Wales Chrysler,
Dodge, Jeep, Ram; Ridge Quality Motors; and
Winter Haven Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram.
Look for more Member-Guest sponsors in this
monthly article throughout the year, and keep them
in mind when shopping locally for goods and
services. For a full sponsor list, check out the
LAMGA website, Lake Ashton Living and Talk of
Lake Ashton.
LA NINERS
By Marti Schmidt
There’s lots of golf happening in February here at
Lake Ashton. SAVE THE DATES: February 2-3
Couples Club Championship, and February 20-21
Niners Pick Your Partner Ringer with lunch. Looks
to be a super fun time. Let’s see if we can get
enough ladies signed up for the Ringer to play the
entire course that day! Despite the rain delay and
cooler weather on Day Two, the LA Ringer
Tournament in January was great. Would love to see
more Niners sign up and play.
Rules, Rules, Rules - let’s talk about 90-degrees (not
the temperature ladies, the GOLF rule). It’s rather
important for the fairway turf that you drive on the
cart path or rough MORE than the fairway. So, the
90-degree rule was made to keep you OFF the
fairways and more on the path. In winter, there are
more golfers using the courses, and the grass can
take a beating. So, do NOT drive your cart down
the fairway to your ball. Please, drive down the cart
path or rough towards your ball, then turn 90degrees
towards it. We own the golf courses, so
let’s take care of them.
The Niners need you for Vice President or Treasurer
to start after the winter season – any takers? Still
have questions? Ready to join? Want to be on the
Board? Contact Janet at jan.mutz@gmail.com for
more info!

LAKE ASHTON PICKLEBALL
ASSOCIATION (LAPA)
By Becky Wilson
The Pickleball Association is comprised of
residents who enjoy Pickleball, from Beginners to
Masters of the game! Residents are not required
to join the Association in order to enjoy the
courts. However, LAPA is a great way to connect
with other players, enjoy the social part of being a
member, and support LA Pickleball! Here are a few
things LAPA does:
• Supplies all balls for the courts
• Plans and orchestrates various fun times with
mixers and social gatherings for members
• Represents its members and works with the HFC
to help the court usage run smoothly
• Purchases needed and desired items (benches,
storage unit, additional wind screens, paddles
that are available for use by beginner players,
bulletin board, etc.) when the HFC does not
have available funds
• Membership gives eligibility to try out and play
on League Teams. The fees are paid by LAPA
and not the individual players. These Leagues
are representative of Lake Ashton in numerous
neighboring communities. They are also fun to
come out and watch!
Those are just some of the benefits of joining
LAPA! If you have any questions, please email
lakeashtonpickleball@gmail.com. If you would like
to join, fill out a short membership form at the
Clubhouse, and pay your dues (check only) —
which are quite reasonable! Membership is $10
per person per year, or $25 per person for three
years. Membership dues run from October 1
through September 30. The Bulletin Board outside
the court fence has a calendar of playing times.
Come on by and take a look! Hopefully this have
given you a little insight into Lake Ashton
Pickleball Association!
WHAT IS THE LA SWIM CLUB?
By Sandy White
A lady at the indoor pool recently confessed she
didn't know what the Swim Club does, so the start
of a new year sounds like a good time to share
this information with LA neighbors.
Almost four years ago, several fitness swimmers
commented that they were bored just doing the
same old laps and didn't like swimming alone. So,
they put their heads together and formed the LA
Swim Club with the goal of working out together
2-3 times a week. The HFC Manager agreed to
reserve the pool and we some swim workout
equipment was donated. Not long after getting
organized, it was discovered that swimmers at
other 55+ communities participated in one or
more of the (now) 31-year-old Florida Senior
Games age group swimming competitions. These
multi-sport events take place throughout the year
in 21 regions, one of which is our Polk Co. Senior
Games. The regional games also serve as qualifiers
for the state senior swimming championships each
December. So, now the club has morphed into two
overlapping groups: a fitness group that does a
printed general workout, and a senior games
competitive group. Both swim under the guidance
of an experienced swim coach. As a result, a
number of swimmers have competed in regional
swim meets, and a few have qualified and
participated in the state championships, and even
the national games. All have come home with
personal satisfaction, and most have brought
home medals, which are awarded by age group to
the top three females & top three males in each of
14 events.
In addition to swimming, there are usually one or
more club socials. Anyone who can swim at least
two lengths of the pool and would like to use
swimming to improve their fitness or aim for the
senior games is welcome to join our club and
workout with us (Mondays at 6 pm, Wednesdays
at 1:45 pm, and Saturdays at 10 am). For more
information, contact volunteer coach Sandy
at sandyw1994@aol.com.

7BOOK CLUB
By Gary Winfrey
All Lake Ashton residents are
invited by the Tuesday Evening
Book Club to a Zoom presentation
February 7 at 2:30 pm in the
Clubhouse Cinema by guest author
Ward R. Anderson about his book
ESCAPE FROM UKRAINE: One
Man’s Journey to the Black Sea.
Mr. Anderson wrote Escape from Ukraine to
protest the 2014 invasion of Eastern Ukraine and
Crimea. Completed in 2020, it was updated and
republished after the invasion of Ukraine in
February 2022.
After graduating from Bucknell University with a
B.A. in History, Mr. Anderson flew fighter/attack
aircraft from the U.S.S. Ranger. As a Naval
Reservist, his NATO deployments in the 1980s
along the Iron Curtain furthered his understanding
of the vulnerability of free border countries.
Anderson lives in Annapolis, Maryland, and as a
seasonal visitor to the Keys, he is a member of the
Key West Writer's Guild.

check the group out. There are several activities and
fundraisers scheduled for 2023. Proceeds for these
events benefit a designated Veterans Charity.
The first event of the year is the Girl Scout Cookie
Drive for the Troops. Last year the group raised
money to purchase more than 300 boxes of GS
Cookies for men and women in uniform. The Girl
Scouts will be making a very special presentation to
LAVA Auxiliary and LAVA to acknowledge this
support. In addition, the Girl Scouts will be collecting
money for the troops to receive cookies this year, and
attendees will also be able to purchase cookies for
personal use … it should be a YUM, YUM meeting!
MR. LAKE ASHTON IS BACK! The fundraiser will be
held on April 15 and a few good men are sought to
be contestants! Funds raised will go to the Veteran
Equine program. Sign up sheets can be found at the
Clubhouse and HFC Activities Desks. This event sold
out when it was held pre-Covid, and the same is
anticipated this year. It is a lot of fun for all!
It’s also never too soon to mark your calendar for the
Craft Fair which will be held again in October. Both
the Clubhouse and HFC have the vendor
applications. Stop by and pick one up.
GENEALOGY CLUB MEETING
By Jane Imparl
Come join the Club for an enjoyable and
productive work session while looking for
ancestors. Bring your laptop/tablet (or use one of
the computers in the media center) and delve into
the online records to look for that long lost great
grandfather or try to knock down that "brick
wall". Some members of the group will be there to
help and coach you if you need it. The Cub meets
Wednesday, February 8 at 2 pm in the HFC Craft
Room. Come and take advantage of the group’s
expertise. For more information, call Jane at
815-545-6655.
Time sure flies when you're having such a good
time. It’s so hard to believe that the first month of
2023 is already history. The LA Rocker community
spent this past month returning to the regular
schedule of meetings/classes every other week.
One of those sessions was devoted to a much
requested dotting class where members learned to
make snowflakes. Leadership is so grateful to have
such a talented group of members, each ready and
willing to share their expertise with the rest. It is
always fun to try something new.
If you haven't yet done so, definitely think about
joining. You don't need to know how to draw or
paint. All you need is the desire to have a good time
and make yourself and others happy. Newcomers
are always welcome and will be lent the supplies
needed for your first meeting. So if you are here
and want to enjoy a lovely afternoon with a great
group of people, please join the meetings on
February 8 and 22. If a meeting has to be canceled,
notification will be posted on the LA Rockers group
page on FaceBook.
Newcomers: PLEASE contact either MJ Richards
(mjmrichards517@gmail.com) or Connie Strassberg
(cbs1949@aol.com) before coming so that supplies
can be prepared for you to use and be able to
contact you if a meeting has to be canceled (not
everyone is on Facebook).
Residents interested in joining a new group should
visit the Clubhouse or HFC Activities Desk to obtain
the contact information for the facilitator of the club,
group, or organization they are trying to join.
Thank you to all the club, group, and organization
facilitators who work very hard to ensure there is a
robust activities schedule for all residents to enjoy.
Lake Ashton is lucky to have a large number of
residents willing to volunteer their time in one way or
another for everyone to live their best retired life. Be
sure to view the calendar inserts in this issue for a list
of recurring activities held at the Clubhouse and HFC.
