Office Hours: May 8, 10 am to noon in the
Clubhouse Conference Room
By Christine Wells,
LA (LW) CDD Community Director
May is National Military Appreciation Month and this is a
great time to honor current and former members of the
U.S. Armed Forces, including those who made the
ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom. Lake Ashton
is fortunate to have an impressive Veterans Memorial
used for special ceremonies including the Memorial Day
program on May 29, hosted by Lake Ashton's Veterans
Association (LAVA). See page 22 for more information on
special events that will be held during the month of May
to honor all of Lake Ashton's Veterans.
The preliminary fiscal year 2024 budget (October 1, 2023
- September 30, 2024) was reviewed at the April 17
LACDD BOS meeting and Budget Workshop and an
updated version with the changes requested by the
Board will be presented at the May 15 meeting for
consideration. A wrap up
report regarding actions
taken at the April 17
LACDD Budget Workshop and regular meeting was sent out on April 21. If you
did not receive a copy and would like to, email cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com.
Visit lakeashtoncdd.com for more information including approved meeting
minutes, agendas, and other important CDD documents.
Signage has been placed at the new designated smoking/vaping area at the
Clubhouse which is located at the southern end of the east parking lot.
Smoking/Vaping is not permitted anywhere else at the Clubhouse including
outdoor amenities.
ENTRANCE GATE REMINDERS
Please use caution (slow down) when entering the community.
There have been several instances when security officers have
had close calls from vehicles coming through the entrance
gates entirely too fast. Each car should stop at the stop sign,
wait for the gate to open fully and proceed at a safe speed. In
addition, while it may appear to be helpful to hit the button
on your gate remote to open the gate for a resident that
appears to be having difficulty with their remote, this could be
someone trying to gain access to the community for ill purposes. If a resident is having difficulty with their
remote security will assist. Please be patient and wait until the car ahead of you receives the help they need
and proceeds through the gate before you hit the button on your remote to enter the gate.

Each month an excerpt from the newly adopted Joint

be submitted through the Staff at the appropriate
Amenity Facility.
With the exception of designated Open Play (as defined in
Section X — Amenity Policies — General Usage),
reservations may be available for up to two (2) hour
increments for all facilities listed in this policy, with the
exception of the Clubhouse Ballroom and HFC
Community Center. These can be reserved for periods up
to four (4) hours. Longer time increments may be
approved by the Amenity Manager. Amenities that have
not been reserved are available for use on a “first come,
first served” basis. There are no personal standing weekly
reservations allowed for the Amenity Facilities listed in the
reservation policies. Lake Ashton activities taking place
within the Amenity Facilities should be open to all Lake
Ashton residents and not be labeled as “private”. If the
room is not reserved by a club, group or organization,
tables may be individually reserved, with the
understanding that the Amenity Manager may move or
cancel reservations, if required, up to 48 hours prior to the
reservation time.
Clubs, Groups, and Organizations may make “standing”
reservations. These will be reviewed semi-annually by the
Amenity Manager. (Refer to section IX on what constitutes
a club.) If a standing reservation made by a registered
Club, Group, or Organization is cancelled or unused more
than three (3) times in a six (6)-month period then the
reservation may be revoked by the Amenity Manager.
This does not apply to a Club, Group, or Organization
going on a planned hiatus previously arranged with Staff.
Reservations for commercial or profit-making purposes will
be charged a fee in accordance with LA CDD and LAII
CDD Chapter III: Rules for Amenities Rates, (respectively).
The Amenity Manager can reschedule any reservation if
requested by the District. The Clubhouse or HFC must be
notified if a scheduled reservation cannot be kept so the
slot may be re-assigned. Reservations will be held for
fifteen (15) minutes past the scheduled start time, after
which the Amenity Manager may re-assign the
reservation.

L.A. LOOKS
Wildlife Corner
Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer
The Blue Jay is a familiar bird, common and
widespread in the eastern United States. Blue Jays at
Lake Ashton tend to be found in the more wooded
areas. Often mistakenly called Bluebirds, they are a
beautiful blue with striking black and white markings
and sport a jaunty crest; male and female look alike.
However, they aren't actually blue. The dark pigment in
their feathers is melanin and scattering light on the
feathers makes them appear blue. Noisy and bold,
they utter a variety of vocalizations many of which
don't even sound birdlike. This intelligent bird mimics
the Red-shouldered Hawk's call well enough to fool
even the most astute ornithologist. The common and
piercing "jay, jay, jay" alarm alerts other birds that a
predator may be nearby. As beautiful and widespread
as this brassy songbird is, not one state has chosen it to
be their state bird.

WAYS TO PROTECT LA
PONDS THIS SUMMER
Summer is on its way, which means scorching days
with lots of sunlight. Algae development occurs
most frequently during the summer months, when
rainfall and pond water temperatures rise. There are
numerous ways residents may help keep Lake
Ashton's Ponds attractive right now.
• Avoid overfertilization and careless application.
• Remove pet waste from your yard.
• Ensure that landscape providers mow lawns with
the chute pointing away from the pond bank.
These actions will help to reduce nutrient runoff
from summer rainfall. When the nutrients in the
water get too high, the chance of an algae bloom
increases. If an algae bloom occurs in a Lake Ashton
CDD pond, the CDD contracts with an aquatics
provider to treat the algae biweekly.
If there are any questions or concerns, email Matt
Fisher at Mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.

Native Flowers of
Central
Florida
By Lynn Davis
The Beach Sunflower (helianthus debilis) is
a great border mounding plant. It is daisy-like in
appearance with yellow and brown in the center. The
flower itself can grow to 12 to 24 inches in height. It
is a spreading perennial and will quickly fill a bare
spot. It can spread two to four feet. The sunflower
does best in full sun and is drought tolerant. In our
area it blooms nearly year round. Why plant beach
sunflower in your yard? Besides the beautiful flower,
it’s a great plant for pollinators, especially butterflies.
You needn’t water it much since it likes hot-dry areas.
Gardeners can use it for wind erosion protection.
The only care is cutting it back in March or April to
help promote more growth. For more information
visit UF/IFAS Extension and look up wildflowers.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
ANNOUNCEMENT
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
First, we thank all residents that could attend our latest Law Enforcement Forum
presentation by Sheriff Grady Judd. You will see more about that coming up along
with ongoing public safety and consumer tips you need to know. Special thanks to
Waters Edge for supplying the yummy food baskets and refreshments and Christine
and team for coordinating all.
Since not all could make it I want to tell you my ongoing plans for Lake Ashton’s
largest, probably oldest, and highly successful all inclusive community program. All
thanks to you all in both cities for the teamwork and support.
Effectively immediately, and after talks with leaders in LA and Law Enforcement,
here’s some highlights of what’s happening in your NW program.
Joan DiBattista has agreed to become our NW Deputy Chief. Joan comes with a very
successful management background, and currently serves as President of the very successful LAVA Auxiliary
here in LA.
Joan will be working closely with two already well known NW Senior Advisors, James Mecsics and Nancy Baker
and of course me. They still want me as the Chief but allowing me some much needed time off and travel plans.
See the Executive Team picture from the meeting. Looking like youngsters don’t you think?
Please stay tuned as a growing group of leaders are continuing to be formed. You will recognize several who
have been with NW for a long time and some newbies to make the program even better, including a really
skilled communications person to support our program enhancements and development. Come join the fun .
More questions or comments feel free to contact Deputy Chief Joan DiBattista at: 239-851-7899. Thanks for
your continued teamwork and support!
CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL (CAP)
By David Muller
Lake Ashton is a great place for many reasons including all the volunteers who participate in so many
functions. The Citizens' Assisted Patrol (CAP) is such a group. It is a county effort by the Sheriff's Office and
that is why CAP patrols both the Lake Wales and Winter Haven portions. The mission is to be the "eyes and
ears" at Lake Ashton for the Sheriff's Office. What does CAP do for Lake Ashton? It gives visibility to the
residents showing that someone is looking out for them to determine if emergency services should be
requested. But it also gives visibility to "bad actors" or people who should not be here and want to hurt you.
The vehicles with the orange flashing lights show those bad actors that someone is looking out for the
residents. There is no predictability when the vehicles will show up.
There is a lot of access by outsiders to Lake Ashton. That is why screening the vendors or anyone with access
to your property is important not only to you but also your neighbors.
Please become a CAP member and contact Mike Weissberg at 863-324-3541 for information and application.
Only TWO HOURS A WEEK are asked of you to help keep Lake Ashton safe.
׉	7cassandra://cIFcI-hJyXMDvSvFeXPuWq_ASxLX8wWc13SNIOcyERo1t`dOڜ#x&׉EIALL IGATOR ALERT
Now that the weather has
warmed up, cold-blooded reptiles
such as alligators can be more
active. Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
reminds residents to be cautious
when having fun in and around
water. The FWC recommends keeping pets away
from the water. For residents who have concerns
with an alligator that poses a threat to humans, pets
or property, call the FWC's Nuisance Alligator
Hotline at 866.FWC.GATOR (392.4286). Alligators
and crocodiles are an important part of Florida's
heritage and play a valuable role in the ecosystems
where they live. Remember, it is illegal to feed or
harass alligators.
If you see an alligator:
• Always give these reptiles a respectful distance —
at least 10 feet — and always leave them alone.
• Alligators are nocturnal animals, more active
during the night. After dark, avoid fresh and brackish
bodies of water. Unprovoked bites will often occur
at the edge of the water.
• Never feed alligators; it encourages them to lose
their natural fear of people.
• Small animals, like pets, and small children are
generally more at risk than large adults.
• Female alligators protect their nests by hissing and
opening their mouths; this does not mean they are
preparing to attack.
• Alligators under four feet in length are not
considered a threat to humans.
NW: CONSUMER AND CRIME
PREVENTION AWARENESS
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Lake Ashton is a vibrant active adult community
where many of our residents use contractors and
handy men for repairs and services with their
property. Residents should be aware of some
prudent actions they should take when contracting
with providers for their services:
1. Strive to use only licensed, insured and bonded
providers for services. Having providers that do
not meet that criteria may expose you to liability
with your insurance or city Code Compliance
should those services fail or lead to complications
with your property. Additionally, a background
check should be required of anyone who has
access to your property. If the service provider
uses non-posted vehicles or privately owner
vehicles in disrepair, a resident should take special
note to vent that provider with the Better
Business Bureau. Doing this will help you
ascertain the company’s business stability or if
there has been any complaints on their service.
Always ask for numerous references and check
them.
2. Never allow any contractor free access to your
property without supervision, especially inside
your residence. It is extremely unwise to give any
type of access control (keys, lock combinations,
etc.) to contractors at any time.
3. Always have a written agreement outlining scope
of work, pricing, schedule of work and remedies
should the services not meet the requirements.
4. If at anytime you feel uncomfortable with a
provider on your property, please feel free to
contact law enforcement for their assistance.
While there are some residents who provide these
services, remember, when they are working for you,
they are not your neighbors but contractors who
should meet the same criteria as those from outside
the community. The aforementioned actions are
especially important for contractors from outside the
community.
Generally most contractors (including handymen)
work within Lake Ashton without incident, but there
have been some concerns regarding this subject so
Neighborhood Watch leadership wanted to make
you aware from the consumer advocacy and crime
prevention perspective. Your Neighborhood Watch
Team is providing this information so that residents
can make informed decisions and keep Lake Ashton
the safe and fun place to live.

1969, an infantry squad led by Lt.
Frantz (Dylan McDermott) and composed of both
seasoned troops and new recruits, attempts to take
a hill during the Vietnam War. In between attacks,
the squad members deal with the other
psychological stresses of the war, including the
effect on morale of the antiwar movement back
home and flashes of racial hostility between white
and African-American soldiers, all mediated by the
cool-headed medic, Doc (Courtney B. Vance).

LAKE ASHTON BOCCE TOURNAMENT
By Wayne Creek
This year’s annual Bocce Ball tournament was held
on April 1 with 16 teams of two competing in the
single elimination tournament. After mostly close
matches throughout the brackets, Tammy and
Robbie Shields won first place, Linda and Carl
Boast second, and Marianne and Mike Morcone
third. Tournament sponsor Jim Weaver of Weaver
Loveless Law presented Charm City gift certificates
to the winners for $100, $75, and $50. Wayne and
Vicki Creek are the Bocce league facilitators and tournament organizers. Linda
and Carl Boast oversaw the judges for the tournament, while Chris and Bill
Reibl managed the brackets and players. Others volunteered in various ways
to make the day a success. Chris and Bill Reibl also hosted an after party at
their home with food, games and fellowship. All enjoyed the day visiting with
fellow players, eating their packed lunch/snacks, and spending the day by the
courts cheering for one another! Bocce is open for play on Mondays and
Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm. New players are always welcome.
TRASH TO TREASURE A HUGE SUCCESS!
By Diane Dillon
On behalf of over 100 BOLLA members and
volunteers from our community, thank you, thank
you, to everyone at Lake Ashton for your
overwhelming generosity and your support for
Trash to Treasure. With your help, we were able
to raise a record breaking $20,800 this year!
Not only was Trash to Treasure a financial success, but we received many compliments
regarding the sale itself. We hope everyone enjoyed attending our sale and is thrilled
with their new treasures. We thank everyone who made thoughtful and generous
donations, those who attended the sale and, of course, the many volunteers who
helped with the sale. It is also important to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire
Clubhouse staff who worked with us every step of the way. Trash to Treasure is a labor of love for the members of
BOLLA. More importantly, based on our success, we are well on our way to making another 1,000 plus blankets both
this year and next. Thank YOU!

Following the highly successful Member-Guest

became the focus of most league activity. Later in the
same month, the men’s golf association held a twoday,
best ball tournament in conjunction with the
LALGA that concluded with a luncheon and awards
ceremony in the Eagle’s Nest.
As LAMGA play rolled into early April the standings
in the Red Hoagland Hyundai challenge began to
reflect some shifts in the standings with some familiar
names still in the top five joined by some new
contenders. Leaders through April for year-end prize
credits at the Pro Shop: 1st Darrell Reid, $89.60; 2nd
John Milsom, $75.25; 3rd Rolly Geyer, $67.50; 4th
Carl Pritchard, $66.85; 5th Doug Hines, $66.50.
Looking ahead to May, the LAMGA weekly lineup will
include a May 3 Cinco de Mayo game of pick your
partner with a post-game lunch in the Eagles Nest.
You won’t want to miss this one. Golf, fun and food.
Shout out to LAMGA sponsors: Last month, we
thanked the major sponsors of the Member-Guest
tournament, but there were dozens of other
businesses and services that also contributed support
to LAMGA. We will list them throughout the year by
categories, starting this month with auto dealers and
services: Central Buick GMC; Dodge Chrysler Jeep
Ram of Winter Haven; Hill Nissan; Huston Cadillac
Buick GMC; Lake Wales Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram;
Red Hoagland Hyundai; Ridge Quality Motors; Tuffy
Tire & Auto Service of Winter Haven; and Weikert

By Jane Imparl
The last two months have
been exciting and fun for
members of the genealogy
club. In March, the group
visited the Bartow Genealogy
Library for an excellent tour
of the facility and learned
that local genealogical/
historical libraries can be a
wealth of information. In
April, five new members
were welcomed to the group. What a great time
everyone had learning about their ancestors and
helping them climb their family tree! If interested in
joining the fun at the next meeting on May 10 at 2 pm
in the HFC Craft Room. Come and see what we're
about and have some fun with your fellow
Ashtonians. All levels of expertise are welcome. For
more information, call 815-545-6655.

By Connie Strassberg
The LA Rockers learned how to paint Disney
characters on rocks on April 5 and will learn how to
decorate rocks with diamond dots on May 3. Many
of the rocks created during or as a result of these
classes will find their way to hiding spots
throughout LA or to this year's fundraiser on July 4
in connection with the Fourth of July Celebration
and Golf Cart Parade. The funds raised will enable
us to continue painting and hiding rocks for LA
residents to find, enjoy, and share.
LA Rockers will meet on May 3 for a "teaching"
meeting geared to those who already have
experience painting rocks. The meeting on May 24
will be a “free paint” meeting. Specifics will be
announced on our Facebook page. Newcomers will
be welcome to the "free paint" meeting where one
of our administrators will share an orientation to
rock painting with them. After the orientation, the
newcomers can sit with one of our more
experienced painters and try to paint a rock of their
own. Newcomers: Before coming to the meeting, it
is necessary to contact either MJ Richards
(mjmrichards517@gmail.com) or Connie Strassberg
(cbs1949@aol.com), so that we know you are
coming and can let you know what supplies you will
need to bring. You don't have to be a Picasso or a
Renoir to be a Rocker - we will teach you how to
put a smile on someone's face while enjoying a
lovely afternoon with a great group of people.
Please note: if a meeting has to be canceled,
notification will be posted on the LA Rockers group
page on Facebook so please join that page if you
have a Facebook account.
