Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
2022 is officially our 125th Anniversary and although weâ€™ve only
played here at Gorton Street for the last 75 years weâ€™ve always had
our home in this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Miniâ€™s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and Iâ€™m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, Â£40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. Weâ€™d not be able to operate without their contributions. I canâ€™t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
â€˜Walking Rugbyâ€™ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those whoâ€™d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.

A very warm winter welcome and a Happy New Year to all our supporters and
visitors at Eccles RFC today. I wish you all the best of health for 2022. Letâ€™s hope
the year ahead provides us with more certainty and positivity. All our Senior
fixtures and Junior county cup games were sadly postponed just before Christmas
due to COVID concerns, and at the time of writing this message the threat
of further restrictions were still undetermined, leaving the safe continuation of
rugby in some doubt. So, if you are reading this, you can assume the match is
(probably) going ahead!
Our 1XV opponents today, Widnes, arrive in good form, having lost just one away
game so far this season. In the reverse fixture back in September Eccles
travelled to the ADM Prem Champions with a squad that saw many homegrown
former colts drafted in as cover for a lengthy injury list. Although Eccles began
that game in the ascendancy, scoring first and breaking through several times
in the opening quarter, a pair of second half yellow cards and a late collapse
assisted the hosts towards a 36-7 win. Consistency of team line up and performance
has continued to be a problem for the Men of Eccles this season but let's
hope we will at least see an improvement in the conversation of attacking opportunities
into points today.
Despite our Senior and Colts teams struggling to find a winning formula on the
field, thereâ€™s certainly been a renewed camaraderie within the squads and the
atmosphere in the clubhouse at the weekend is now returning to its buzzing best
(restrictions permitting!) Weâ€™re working hard here at Eccles to overcome the set
backs of COVID by promoting the game and invigorating its growth within our
community. Since last summer, the club has taken big strides forwards with its
Mini & Junior rugby, with increased numbers across all 10 teams. Whist other
clubs have curtailed their development of youth due to a decline in numbers,
weâ€™re a hive of activity and bursting at the seams on Sunday mornings!
Our Community Rugby Coach is engaged with local schools and the club is now
growing at a healthy pace with over 400 members. Of course, this surge in
participation and the maintenance of our facilities would not be possible
without the invaluable assistance we receive from our sponsors and the continued
dedicated commitment of our volunteers. Donating your time to support the
club's activities can be very rewarding so if youâ€™d like to get involved and put
something back in please do step forward.
Whichever team youâ€™re supporting this weekend, I hope you enjoy your match

HEAD COACH NOTES
A very warm welcome and a Happy New Year to everyone attending
Gorton Street this beautiful early January afternoon. I hope everyone
made the most of the Christmas period and all the festivities that comes
with it.
Today we welcome old friends Widnes RUFC. These clubs have had many
a good battle over the years with the spoils going the way of our visitors
in the meeting earlier in the season over at Widnes.
The Eccles squad is really looking to continue to develop its style of play
and to understand how getting our accuracy nearer to 90% is the key to
us being successful at what we do. Eccles are still definitely in a rebuilding
stage as a new group but although we were on the wrong side of the
results in a lot of the games prior to the Christmas break we were
extremely happy about how we wanted to play the game in most of those
contests.
Iâ€™m hoping today we can produce something really positive on the field,
giving all who are watching something to enjoy.

Eccles U10s Spotlight
This weekâ€™s spotlight match report is on our tenacious Under 10s. With
expert coaches Dan and John at the helm, these gutsy guys and girls
have gone unbeaten this season! Theyâ€™ve doubled in numbers since
September (8 to 16) which is down to the commitment of the coaching
team, parents and experienced manager Leeann.
They are a relentless outfit with and without the ball. Aggression, pace
and commitment to the contact have been a real focus in training, these
guys just love rucking! After impressive victories over Sale, Burnley and
Liverpool Collegiate, they most recently battled back to draw with an
Ormskirk side who matched their never-say-die attitude and rucking
prowess. Barnstorming runs and battling tackles aplenty, this was a real
feast of physical rugby and one hell of a comeback from our Eccles warriors!
The
players and supporters are a real credit to our club. Most recently,
trialling â€˜Friday Night Lightsâ€™ training sessions on our all-weather pitch
has seen them master the breakdown and gel as an outfit. Balancing a
bigger squad is no mean feat but this is a team that hunt in a pack
through wind and rain. They havenâ€™t lost yet and this team donâ€™t know
when theyâ€™re beaten, theyâ€™re the tenacious Under 10s!

A very happy new year from all involved with Eccles Ladies. We enter the
new year after a turbulent ending to 2021 which has seen us not play a
competitive fixture for nearly 6 weeks. Whilst this has left our fit and
healthy players with a large gap to fill on a Sunday afternoon it does give
us a chance to clear the physio room and welcome back some key
individuals.
We are very excited to welcome a raft of Senior players back to our ranks
in January and hope not to be waiting too long to see the likes of Rebbecca
Roden, Georgia Cunliffe and Rhianna Scott. We do however have to
wait a little longer to welcome back fan favourite Bonnie Flemming we
hope to see her back in blue and white before the end of season but we
may have to wait until the touch season restarts (her true calling).
Our eagerly awaited return will have to wait another week unfortunately
but we are very excited to begin the second half of the season. We travel
to a very strong Sale 1861 side for our first outing full of determination
to build on a strong performance in the home leg. We continue to work
hard behind the scenes to grow the section back to it's former glories.
We hope that the remainder of the season is uninterrupted and allows
us to showcase our improvements on a weekly basis.
Our ever-growing section is steadily percolating down into our junior
ranks and gives us even greater motivation to set the stage for our future
stars. It's a great year to become and Eccles Lady whether you're a mini,

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so weâ€™re within the RFU guidelines, and
weâ€™re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

·DUKE OF EDINBURGHS AWARD
In 2011 Eccles RFC became the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the Duke of
Edinburgh (DofE) award scheme for its
young people aged 14 to 24. A decade on,
our DofE award scheme has grown from
strength to strength, and can take great
pride in the attainment of over 200
prestigious awards (48 Gold, 62 Silver,
127 Bronze) achieved by its players. This
remarkable success is a testament to the
committed effort and dedicated persistence
of our participants and the club
volunteers who lead the programme.
The DofE award gives young people the
chance to learn new skills for life. Consisting
of four areas of personal endeavour -
Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition
(plus a Residential experience at Gold
level), the DofE inspires and encourages
commitment, personal development and
an adventurous spirit in young people to
help
resilience
them gain
to
the
confidence
and
successfully overcome
whatever life throws their way. The award
programme compliments Rugby activities
here at the club and instills in our future
adults the importance of team work and
tenacity in reaching goals.
To celebrate our 10-year association with
the DofE Award scheme, this season the
club decided to proudly emblazon all new
Eccles RFC Mini and Junior Rugby shirts
with the DofE award crest. This initiative
was supported by Seward Refrigeration
and the Morson Group who provided the
financial security to ensure that every
Mini and Junior player, aged 5 to 16, could
be provided with a new full kit.
Anyone who has visited the club this
season on a Sunday morning will agree
it's been heart-warming to see hundreds
of kids running out in those sparkling new
Navy and White hoops! Although our
sponsors did not make their
commitment
for
reasons ofpublicity we think
it only right and proper that we take this
opportunity to recognise and express our
appreciation of their patronage, without
which we could not do what we do.
Eccles Rugby Football Club and our DofE
award scheme is steadfast in its principles
of inclusivity. There are many families
within this district suffering hardship and
it remains important to us that no
member is denied the opportunity to
participate as a result of financial
contraints.
Providing the DofE Award is not without

Today our 1XV will be entertaining Widnes RUFC, who were founded in 1924 as
Widnes Secondary School Old Boys RFC. The following year the name was
changed to Old Widnesians RFC before becoming an open club in 1959 when,
with its new ground and clubhouse at Heath Road, the name changed to Widnes
Rugby Union Football Club.
The first recorded fixture between Eccles and Widnes we can find in the club
archives is from the 1926/27 Season - 4th December,1926 Old Widnesians
1stXV 20 v Eccles 1stXV 8 with the "A" teams playing each other at Eccles. The
1XV teams met again later that season in the reverse fixture on Easter Saturday,
16th April,1927 with the "A" teams playing each other at Widnes.
At this time Eccles played at Redclyffe Road, near Barton Swing Bridge on the
Trafford Park side of the Ship Canal, behind All Saints RC church on land that
faced Barton Power Station (what is now B&Q today). This was our second
season at this ground having moved here in 1925 from Barton Lane, where the
club had used the King's Head Hotel for Club Head Quarters and changing
facilities. Eccles temporally used the Pack Horse Hotel, Barton, for changing
facilities in 1925 before constructing its own facilities at Redclyffe Road with 4
dressing rooms, a hot water boiler and a bath installed for the 1926 season.
Eccles 1stXV would face Old Widnesians again the following season on 17th
Sept.,1927 and 21st April, 1928, these two dates being the first and last
playing Saturdays of the season. This was clearly a nomadic period for Eccles,
who were looking to rebuild and recover from the terrible losses suffered during
the First World War, and had once again readopted the Rock House Hotel on
Peel Green Road as club H.Q, where we had played before WWI, before adopting
the Patricroft Conservative club as HQ for the 1928/29 Season. On 22nd
September 1928 Eccles 1st XV would defeat Old Widnesians 24-19 at the old
Redclyffe Road ground and go on to enjoy good form and distinguishing itself as
the only club amongst 52 northern clubs to be beaten only once during the
season.
Despite the regular inconvenience of ship canal traffic which meant a long wait
to cross Barton Swing Bridge to get to the pitch, the club remained at Redclyffe
Road until the outbreak of WW2.

The Committee minute book records - 3rd January 1972 - a receipt had been
received from Salford Royal Hospital Management committee for the amount
raised at the charity match, Â£15.67. There was also a reminder from club Chairman
Harry Broomhead about the working party on January 7th. The following
week it was recorded that a great deal of work had been achieved by the few
who had attended the working party. Another one would be held at a later date.
Harry of course would later become a stalwart â€œfossil".
40 years ago
4th January 1982 - The Lancashire cup fixture with Broughton Park was
confirmed for Sunday, 17th Jan., weather permitting. The previous November,
Eccles had beat Ruskin Park 15-3 to progress into the 3rd round.
18th January 1982. - Lancashire Cup vs Broughton Park, a successful day
despite the fact that we lost 25-6. Thanks expressed to Captain Pete Nicholls
and vice-captain Steve Dore and all who helped, in particular Eddie Williams,
who organised the admission charges and car parking. Â£80+ was raised. Mr
Dore is still playing, competing in the recent Friday night Vets game.
30 years ago
9th January 1992 - Club Captain, Andy Brunt records in the committee meeting
minutes that "training has slowed in the past couple of weeks, probably due to
Christmas, he will contact the team captains to raise the subject with players".

Eccles entertained Fleetwood in
what would be the last game
before the Christmas break,
hoping to build on the home win
against Oldham. The game turned
out even closer than that 3 point
win. While the pitch was firm
underfoot the conditions were
poor and the continuous rain
meant it was never likely to be a
high scoring game. With this in
mind Eccles could not have got off
to a much worse start than they
did.
The ball was turned over and some
neat hands from the visitors gave
Fleetwood a 5 point lead in the
opening minute before most of the
crowd had made it to their unfamiliar
viewing positions next to the
M60. However Eccles rolled their
sleeves up and proceeded to get
stuck into the game. Eccles began
to build territorial pressure and
Fleetwood
began
to concede
penalties. The home side regularly
showed some ambition to keep
the ball moving and despite the
conditions were stretching Fleetwood's
defence. Fly Half Speakman
chipped over a penalty to
reduce the deficit to 2 points. With
the half nearing an end Eccles
stretched the defence to the left
and then identified the space to
the right with Speakman putting in
an excellent crossfield kick that
was gathered by Matt Parkinson
who just about had the pace to
squeeze in the corner. Given the
balance of the first half Eccles
might have wanted to have been
further ahead at half time but were
confident that they could continue
in the same vain in the second half
and build on the lead they had
taken. HT 8-5
However Fleetwood had other
ideas and slowly began to exert the
same territorial pressure the
Eccles had in the opening half.
This combined with Fleetwood
beginning to edge proceedings at
the numerous scrums meant the
slender lead was under threat.
Penalties were traded and then
Eccles, having their best passage
of play, had a couple of kickable
penalties to increase the lead,
which were turned down. Unfortunately
Eccles could not convert
these chances to the try that would
surely have sealed the game.
Eccles were left to rue these
decisions as they conceded the
equalising penalty with the
minutes and light running out.
Fleetwood mounted a final attack
to try and steal the game but the
aggressive Eccles defence they
had shown all game held strong to
