Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
This is officially our 124th anniversary and although weâ€™ve only
played here at Gorton Street for the last 74 years weâ€™ve always had
our home in this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Miniâ€™s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and Iâ€™m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, Â£40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. Weâ€™d not be able to operate without their contributions. I canâ€™t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
â€˜Walking Rugbyâ€™ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those whoâ€™d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.

óCHAIRMANâ€™S WELCOME
A warm welcome and a Happy Christmas to all our supporters and visitors at
Eccles RFC today. With our 1st XV home games being rare so far this season Iâ€™ll
probably struggle to squeeze in all of the clubâ€™s good news stories into one page
(so please do regularly check out our website and social media which have
updates daily!). Letâ€™s begin with rugby. Our mens teams have struggled to find
consistency with their results and line ups but recent performances have shown
we can play exciting flowing rugby, we have great potential with our young homegrown
talent and the welcome return of some experienced former players should
I believe see a continued improvement in our form and fortunes on the pitch as
we head into winter. The lads will be looking to build on last Saturdayâ€™s hard
fought victory and I hope to see two Ws chalked up on the board. Itâ€™s great to
have both 1XV and 2XV at home today. Emerging from the pandemic lockdown
thereâ€™s certainly a renewed camaraderie within the squad and the atmosphere
in the clubhouse on Saturdays is now back to buzzing.
Since the summer, the club has taken big strides forwards too with its Mini &
Junior rugby, with increased numbers in every team and weâ€™re now bursting at
the seams on Sunday mornings! Next weekend our Junior teams will compete in
Lancashire Cup ties and we hope you can join us to cheer them on. Speaking of
which, our Ladies are also progressing positively with their rebuilding and their
fixture vs Didsbury Toc H will be our marquee game at Gorton Street next Saturday
afternoon, so get down to the club early to give your vocal support to the girls
before the Brass Band strikes up and the singing starts at tea time!
This is the season for celebration and togetherness. COVID hit community rugby
hard and many clubs across Britain are facing uncertain prospects. Weâ€™re
working hard here at Eccles to promote the game and really appreciate the
invaluable assistance we receive from our sponsors in encouraging participation
and maintaining our facilities. Our Community Rugby Coach is engaged with
local schools and the club is now growing at a healthy pace with over 400 members.
None of this of course would be possible without the continued dedicated
commitment of our volunteers. Donating your time to support the club's activities
can be very rewarding so if youâ€™d like to get involved and put something back
in to your community please do step forward.
Whichever team youâ€™re supporting this weekend, I hope you enjoy your match

Good day and a very warm welcome to Gorton Street.
After a few quiet weekends down the club due to smaller league formats
etc itâ€™s fantastic to have a really busy one before the Christmas Break.
Eccles 1s welcome old friends Fleetwood. The two clubs have had some
fierce fixtures over the years and I do not doubt today will be any different
so strap yourself in and prepare to be shaken.
The 2s also play host this weekend to Manchester neighbours Broughton
Park. The Eccles lads have started putting in a few good performances
of late and it has been fantastic to see some of the effort and commitment
to attend training really paying off for that group.
Eccles Mighty 3s were supposed to be away at Manchester Spartans
today but unfortunately the Spartans had to call the fixture of due to a
shortage of players but weâ€™re hoping the lads will still be turning out
somewhere locally as we look to get another 3s fixture in the bag

season with the annual Fossils gathering on Thursday evening, but there are still
plenty of reasons to get your coat on and get down to the club for some Christmas

Senior Players Outing
1XV and 2XV fixtures at home will be followed by the annual Christmas players
(Male and Female) night out - this year to Marble Brewery Tap Room (Kansas
Avenue, Salford, M50 2GN) Transport will start leaving club at 6:30pm.
Food will be available to purchase at the brewery. After tasting the wares of one
of Salfordâ€™s finest breweries the convoy will navigate onto Salford Quays.

Christmas Carol Concert
1XV and 2XV fixtures away. Ladies fixture at home, followed by the annual
Christmas sing along, accompanied by Eccles Borough Band. Start time approx.
6:30pm.
Sunday 19th Dec
Breakfast with Santa
Following a light training session by the miniâ€™s, including a number of push ups,
trunk curls, bench presses and the usual uncoordinated mayhem, the little ones
will be taken into the clubhouse where a VIP will make a surprise appearance.
Parents are asked to book a place for their children by contacting Rachel
Nicholls or Hilary Berry. Please note, due to an expected high demand, this
event will probably involve two sittings, proposed timings are approx. 11:00 and
12:00. Beware, the entertainment may contain Nuts.

Annual Charity Match
KO 2:00pm. Eccles Presidentâ€™s XV vs Eccles Chairmanâ€™s XV â€“ plus numerous
replacements. The usual International Standard game will take place to entertain
the baying crowd. This will be followed by seasonal revelry within the
clubhouse.

Eccles Mini and Junior teams have enjoyed a record-breaking Autumn
termâ€¦With over 20 new, registered members in November alone, our
M&J community has welcomed lots of new faces into the Eccles family.
Our Under 5s enjoy the early Sunday morning slot on our all-weather
pitch. From 'Rob the Nest' to 'THE FLOOR IS LAVA', our fun-loving coaches
are bringing the madness and there's smiles all around. With our reception
age members growing and growing, we're always on the lookout for
adult helpers...so any keen parents please contact us on a Sunday morning.
The U6s have quickly progressed to a fully-fledged, tag rugby
machine! Coming out of weekly lockdown zoom trainingâ€¦all of the sock
squatting and toilet roll tossing has led to a committed set of kids that
have an excellent core skillset!
Despite a heavy Autumn fixture schedule for the U7s, U8s and U9s, the
excitement of game time and growing camaraderie has built huge numbers
of committed minis, parents and volunteers. Away days to Sale,
Rochdale, Southport, Trafford and Old Bedians have all bolstered the
size and strength of the best Minis section in the North. Our U9s have
commenced â€˜Friday Night Lightsâ€™ training sessions as they ready themselves
for contact rugby in January!
Committed coaches and on-field intensity means our U10s and U11s
remain unbeaten this season.
The word is out and our local schools coach Dan has sparked an influx of
new players. Aggressive defending and support in attack is building a
blueprint for success in these booming age grades.
The early work of our Community Rugby Coach James has seen our U12s
and U13s enjoy a steady growth in new talent. Bonding and building is
the order of the day for these lads and weâ€™re proud of the growing community
of eager parents and players as they progress each week!
Focussed and fiery, our U13s girls group have further developed their
rugby knowledge at Gorton Street only to tackle the â€˜Greater Manchester

Girls Networkâ€™ and widen their stomping ground. They continue to play
with a skill and maturity beyond their years and their pathway to Ladies
rugby looks exciting at Eccles! These girls can.
Last but not definitely not least, our powerhouse U14s and U16s have
hit the ground running and the form book is impressive. Punching victories
through a real team ethic has led to weekly, winning rugby games for
our young men. Theyâ€™ve regularly enjoyed the exposure of our club house
pitches as our Minis section watch on, popcorn in hand, as boys turn into
men. Congratulations to the lads on their County call ups and their
continued commitment to our homegrown Duke of Edinburgh Award
Scheme. Kudos!
Weâ€™ll celebrate in style this Christmas but we wonâ€™t take our eye off the

Welcome to the festive instalment of womenâ€™s rugby at Eccles RFC (if you are
reading this on Saturday 11th December at the men's game youâ€™ll have to wait
until next weekend for the main event!) Welcome to the players and supporters
of Didsbury Toc H for this special Saturday Showcase Christmas special.
We are very excited to finish 2021 on the 1XV pitch at home against old rivals
(good friends really), this has always been an eagerly anticipated fixture for both
teams given an extra edge with the added exposure of a Saturday game. We
hope that you enjoy the game and experience first-hand the level of rugby that is
being played week on week.
We continue to be very excited by the potential of this young group and the
growth that has happened over the last 3 months has been exceptional. Our
culture is fostering a work ethic and hunger in players to want to constantly
improve towards our goal of being a Championship Ladiesâ€™ side once more.
What is particularly pleasing is the position of our young #homegrown players
taking up responsibilities in the leadership group and driving the standards
instilled in them from a young age. As we come towards the halfway point of our
season, we are still searching for that first win. The growth of the group has been
consistent and exciting over the past 3 months, and we are all confident in the
potential of this group. Further bolstered by our new relationship with Salford
University Womens we know that it is only a matter of time before our results
start to show the work that's being put in by this talented every growing group.

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so weâ€™re within the RFU guidelines, and
weâ€™re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

The DofE award is the worldâ€™s
leading youth achievement award,
giving 14-24 year olds who wish to
take up the challenge, the opportunity
to strive to be the best they
can be and gain the confidence to
believe anything they put their

one and four years to complete

employers and universities alike.
Eccles RFC were the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the DofE
award programme to its players.
The scheme was established in
honour of Christopher Tickle who
was posthumously awarded the
DofE Gold Award by HRH Prince
Phillip in 2010. Since 2011, the
clubâ€™s young people have achieved
over 100 Bronze awards, over 60
Silver awards and 48 prestigious
Gold Awards â€“ a testament to the
hard work and dedication of the
participants and the Eccles team
of volunteer leaders.
The DofE programme is a journey
of adventure and discovery that
compliments the ethos of Rugby
by rewarding teamwork, endeavour,
physical activity, learning
skills and community volunteering.
To achieve an award a young
person must show persistence,
commitment, progress and
personal development
over
a
period of time. Every activity must
be successfully completed and
assessed. Activities take a minimum
of one hour a week over a
set period of time, so they can be
fitted in around academic study,
hobbies and social lives.
To commence a Bronze Award you
must be aged 14+ years, 15+
years for Silver and 16+ years to
start a Gold Award. For more

Today our 1XV will be entertaining Fleetwood, who have origins as club stretching
back over 80 years and were registered with the RFU in 1932 as 'Fleetwood
Old Boysâ€™ (of Fleetwood Grammar School) with the 'Old Boys' title dropped in the
early 1950â€™s.
The very first recorded fixture between Fleetwood and Eccles we can find in the
archives is from the 20th October in 1928/29 Season when the Eccles Journal
reported on 26th October,1928 - "A delightful exhibition of rugby was seen at
Fleetwood and although Eccles only scored 5 points, the game was full of
interest, some clever back play being indulged in by both sides." Final score -
Fleetwood nil, Eccles 5. The return game at Eccles on 10th February, 1929 was
cancelled but the following season 1929/1930, Eccles played Fleetwood Home
and Away with 2 wins for Eccles.
Following WW2, Fleetwood resumed its rugby activities, settling at its present
location with a small clubhouse by arrangement with the Fleetwood Cricket Club
and extended using old RAF huts from a local camp. Very similar to our own club
story at Eccles RFC, as we moved to our home here at Gorton Street Peel Green
after the war and adopted two former Army Huts for our changing facilities and
pavilion! Enthusiastic club members can be seen working on the Army huts in
this 1948 photo.
In the 1949/1950 Season, Fleetwood O.B. make a brief appearance in the
Eccles fixture list with a 9-3 home victory on 11th February 1950, reported by
the Journal "Eccles broke new ground on Saturday when they visited the coast
to meet Fleetwood Old Boys. The local gale-like conditions were nothing to those
which met Eccles on the coast and the wind, coupled with the driving rain, made
playing conditions bad with the pitch ankle deep in mud.â€ Perhaps those conditions
explain the sporadic meetings between the clubs as the next fixture in the
records is 1954-56 and then skip to 1962/63.
Back in December 1948, the first season at our â€˜new' ground, Eccles enjoyed
a Christmas Day fixture and win over Sale â€œAâ€. Eric Salter, who had married the

previous day, was absent and his place was taken by Peter Clough who scored
one of the second half tries resulting in a final score of Eccles 11 v Sale "A" 0.
The Boxing Day games with Manchester were cancelled owing to the hard conditions
of the frozen ground.

Documented in the club committee minute book on 1st December 1980, the
Eccles Borough Band made a request to attend to play carols and make a
collection. It was agreed that they would be invited at 6pm on Saturday, 20th
December 1980 as it was thought "this could be a successful pre-Christmas
event.â€ Well, it must have been, as they are still attending some 41 years later
and
long may
our
annual
association
continue!
And finally to wrap up this edition of the Gazette, a short piece from our archives
on the 2XV opponents today, Broughton Park
"29th September, 1899. Eccles and Broughton Park met at Heaton Park in
boisterous weather on Saturday. Eccles played with 14 men. Eccles were chiefly
on the attack, but couldn't score. Final score - Broughton Park 1 goal, Eccles nil.
The "A" teams met at Barton where Eccles had only 12 players, but an exciting
game ended with Broughton Park 1 goal v Eccles nil.â€ Let's hope that we have a
full compliment of players and some tries when the two teams kick off at
2.15pm today!

affects the players and refereeâ€™s performance and
attitude.

competitors.
