Maybe it is just me getting older, BUT, these year ends seem to be coming faster than they used to! Without question, 2019 has been one to remember. Our industry seems to be a strong position and naturally we are all looking forward to the promise of a strong 2020. I believe that is one of the things I like most about the signage industry. We are always looking ahead. We are always looking forward to that next project or challenge. We are always looking for that next trick that will make our jobs easier today. We are always looking to do more and to do better. In a world that sometimes feels as if is going mad; what a breath of fresh air to have new opportunities and challenges to keep up on our toes. No question, the sign industry has plenty of both to keep us all occupied. This will be my last article as president of the Illinois Sign Association. Without question, it has been a true honor to serve our association in this position for the past four years. The past four years have flown by. I am pleased to say, because of all of YOU, our association is stronger and better positioned for a promising future. That is not because of me. The ISA Fall Conference and Trades EXPO found almost 100 people in attendance representing 22 sign companies and 24 representative companies of the allied trades. The event, held October 1-3, 2019 at the Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa, was jampacked with educational content, table top exposition, an exciting keynote speaker and the “Best of the Best” sign design contest awards. Wednesday, October 2, 2019 Morning…The annual Golf Outing was rained out sadly however the Historic Tour of Galena including President Ulysses S. Grant’s home was enjoyed by some of the guests. A very special program luncheon was introduced for the first time at the Fall Conference. The event, known as Women Leading the Industry brought together mostly women to discuss the dynamics of working in the sign industry as a woman. The conference seminar was titled The Female Leader - Passion Empowerment and Confidence and featured Cheryl Grate of Grate Signs and Katie Conroy of Poblocki Signs. They shared reflections of times in the industry when women were expected to be paid less simply because they were female. A lively discussion ensued! They suggested, that as more women enter the industry, seek to be as knowledgeable as possible, ask questions, get involved in local groups, and the sign association, and just go do it… put yourself out there with confidence! Lori Anderson, the President and CEO of the International Sign Association provided a fabulous overview of the arenas that the International Sign Association is focusing upon. Topics included talent hiring and retaining, advocacy, community and connections within the industry, and focus on this growing skill. She noted that a skills gap is predicted and that manufacturing jobs will continue to be difficult to full. Providing support for employee development International has developed a robust online learning platform which provides digital badges as verified certification that are displayed on LinkedIn and other social media sites. Lori also encouraged members to consider National Sign Manufacturing day inviting local schools and civic officials to bring awareness to the industry and professional careers. She also noted the ISA Elite Program a leadership development program for young sign industry professionals and the XPD experiential design program offered during the spring International Sign Expo. Ted Kiper, representing the Sign Research Foundation offered a discussion of resources for helping your business and for appealing for sign code improvements using research for local municipalities. There are 79 research studies in the library of the Sign Research Foundation for designers, installers and manufacturers. Other long-range thinking includes future of nano materials, artificial intelligence, 3-D printing, 5G Internet, and holographic signs. David shared the notion of big picture project planning and related action plans for intra-company shared knowledge and information. MAURY ELY COMMITTEE…The Maury Ely committee is responsible for the promotion and review of nominations for the award and the ultimate selection of the award honoree. MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE…The membership development committee’s role is to identify programs, activities, and services that will enhance membership for sign companies and the allied trade members and to coordinate the Regional Meet and Greet Events. The committee will develop a list of key challenges and needs in the industry providing guidance for educational sessions, regional events and media content. In addition, this committee has the responsibility to foster an environment with tactics for membership recruitment and growth. CONFERENCE PROGRAM COMMITTEE…The conference program committee is responsible for the overall vision and staging of conferences and expositions. Duties include the identification and selection of speakers, sessions, panels and other activities which may include a trade expo, Designer’s Symposium, golf outing, awards banquet, and other social and networking experiences. SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE…The scholarship committee is responsible for the standards, promotion, management, and selection of candidates. The preliminary budget is $3000 of scholarships to be awarded. SIGN DESIGN COMMITTEE…The sign design committee is responsible for the annual design contest which includes the promotion and evaluation of award winners in categories for recognizing excellence in the sign industry. The committee meets once in person 4-6 weeks prior to the fall conference to review all the submittals and determines the category 1st and 2nd place winners. “The Best of the Best” award will be chosen from the winners by ballot of conference participants during the fall meeting. CHICAGO SIGN CODE TASK FORCE…The goal of this exciting initiative is to bring a sweeping overhaul of the Chicago sign ordinance. The goal is to elevate this change as an important campaign matter for the spring mayoral elections. Working with a Small Business Advisory Council and the International Sign Association, ISA representatives will be responsible for promoting, surveying, and representing the Illinois sign industry and serve on the coalition with SBAC and local chambers.
