Thank you to everyone who prayed for,

thank you all.

By Christine Wells,
LA (LW) CDD Community Director
Long days, short nights, afternoon thunderstorms,
and flowers blooming bright … summer is
officially here! Many residents are taking trips to
visit family and friends while others are enjoying
guests at Lake Ashton. It is great to see residents
proudly showing their visitors the beautiful
amenities and even more enjoyable to meet those
who mean so much to them. Be sure to register
guests at the Health and Fitness Center (HFC) or
Clubhouse before taking them to the amenities.
The Community Director's new office is now
located near the East entrance to the Clubhouse
in what used to be the Conference Room. The
previous office was recently turned into a muchneeded
storage closet. The Operations Manager's
new office is located near the Community
Director's office. The entrance is on the outside of
the building on the East side of the building, what
used to be the Lake Wales HOA Office. Feel free
to stop by and say hi!
At the June Board meeting, Supervisors reviewed the combined security options proposals that
were included in the agenda packet. Further discussion will take place at the Joint Board of
Supervisors meeting that will be held on July 21 at 11 am in the Community Center at the Health
and Fitness Center (HFC). A plan that includes potentially switching the current spaces that are
being occupied by the Media Center and Card Room and possibly adding a third pool table to the
Game Room and relocating the poker tables will be presented at the July meeting per the Board's
request. Supervisors reviewed the combined list of strategic planning and reserve study projects for
fiscal year 2024. Further discussion regarding this potential project list will occur at the July
meeting. A quote was approved to pressure wash and seal the bridges on the East Golf Course.
Staff at the Clubhouse and HFC (Health and Fitness Center) work hard everyday to ensure residents
live their best retirement life at Lake Ashton. If there is an activity or service that is not currently
offered but necessary to accomplish this goal please contact Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD
Community Director at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com or James Margeson, LAII (WH) CDD Community
Director at jmargeson@lakeashton2cdd.com. We hope residents enjoy this edition of the LA Times
and are pleased with the effort staff puts forth to ensure residents enjoy the best years of their life!

"Access Winter Haven" is the City of Winter Haven's
new app for citizens that can be downloaded in the
App Store. The app allows citizens to send information
straight to the department, division, or team who can
help. The average “fix” time is 1 day. It can be utilized
to report anything from potholes on City streets to
drainage or wildlife issues. The app is also the new
system utilized for bulk pickup. Select “schedule a bulk
pickup” and staff will respond with your pickup date.

SEASONAL RESIDENTS &
SUMMER TRAVELERS

regarding our entertainment, social, and health-related programs.
The Pig Roast is a new offering that will be fun for all, and the Fall and
Risk Prevention seminar is something that will be of benefit to
everyone. We look forward to seeing our residents at these, as well
as other, upcoming events at the HFC. We are also in the process of
combining Lake Wales and Winter Haven resident to join together in
the Activities Advisory Committee in order to better serve our
community. All ideas are welcome and will be considered.

We would like to thank Chuck Yeager for his
service in our Maintenance Department, and
welcome Richard Palone as his replacement.
Richard has many years of maintenance
experience in plumbing, air conditioning,
electrical, painting as well as general
maintenance.
Richard, like Chuck, will be a valuable member
of our HFC Team assisting Karen VanKirk. You
may have noticed our Maintenance Staff

Wildlife Corner
Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer
The Red-bellied Woodpecker is the most common
woodpecker seen at Lake Ashton. Many mistakenly
call it a Red-headed Woodpecker because the male
has quite a bit of red on the head. However, it lacks the
totally red head of the other. These year-round
residents have a heavily barred black-and-white back.
The red on the belly is negligible rendering the name
rather meaningless. Woodpeckers have very long
tongues that are about twice the length of their bill to
reach inside the holes they drill for insects. When not
using the tongue, it's curled around the back of the
head between the skull and the skin! The holes
excavated are frequently used by other birds. They
drum on trees and other objects to proclaim territory
and attract mates. The Red-bellied Woodpecker's
rolling calls are a familiar sound. If you take time to
learn the call you will notice them everywhere!
OUTDOOR POOL AND SPA
REFURBISHMENT PROJECT
The Outdoor Pool and Spa will be closed to
complete an extensive refurbishment project
starting July 10. LACDD approved the following
items at the May Board of Supervisors Meeting.
• Resurfacing of the Pool and Spa
• Replacement of all tile in the Pool and Spa
• Replacement of all non-LED lights in the Pool
with LED lights
• Adding an additional handrail on each entrance
to the Pool
• Replacement of the coping stones on the
outside border of the Pool and Spa
Residents are
fortunate to
have two pools
and 3 spas at
Lake Ashton
so during the
time that the
Outdoor Pool
and Spa are
closed for
maintenance,
the Indoor
Pool and Spas
(2) at the Health and Fitness Center (HFC) are available
for use! Take a look at the schedule of activities
happening at the Indoor Pool to schedule your pool
time or try out a new class or activity. Don't forget to
stop and admire the plants that were installed around
the Indoor Pool by the Garden Club.

AFFECT PONDS?
Native Flowers of
During the summer months,
lawns are heavily fertilized.
Excessive quantities and sloppy
application can be detrimental to
adjacent ponds. Fertilizers are
predominantly composed of
phosphorus and nitrogen, and
when introduced to a nearby
pond, they can increase the levels
of nutrients. Increasing nutrient
levels increases the likelihood that
algae will flourish.
The white particles in the image are fertilizer granules that
have been introduced to one of Lake Ashton's ponds.
Please remind lawn care professionals to use caution
when fertilizing lawns in order to limit the quantity of
fertilizer that could potentially end up in ponds. Please
contact Matt Fisher at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com if you
have queries or concerns regarding aquatic maintenance
in any ponds in Lake Wales.

The Butterfly Orchid is a slow growing, less
than an inch, epiphytic plant. That means it adheres to a
living plant surface; no need to worry about soil. It can
be seen on trunks and branches of live oaks,
mangroves, and bald cypresses. The flower petal is
bronze or orangish in color with a white lip and a purple
dot. It has one to two grass-like looking leaves. The
orchid resembles a butterfly, hence its name.
Why Grow Butterfly Orchids in your trees?
The orchids have a honey-like fragrant that attracts a
variety of bees. This is the main pollinator for the orchid.
It isn’t picky. It can grow in full sun or part shade. Since
it’s a native plant, its sustainability makes it a perfect
landscape addition. You’ll be rewarded in Spring and
Summer with an abundance of showy flowers.
Buyer beware! These orchids have been commercially
exploited. Make sure to buy from a reputable source.

DRIVER SAFETY REMINDER
All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop
signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, please keep an eye out for
pedestrians at all times. Obeying the posted speed
limit and traffic signs can help avert a potential
tragedy. Recent state legislation changes have
increased the age for golf cart drivers taking effect
October 1. The law requires that a person operating
a golf cart on public roads or streets who is under 18
years of age must possess a valid learner’s permit or
driver’s license. Anyone older than 18 must carry a
state-issued ID.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
As you may know your Neighborhood Watch (NW)
Leadership Team have been busy updating and
enhancing the inter- workings of NW to further improve
the success of the community wide program. I am
pleased to announce, under the leadership of Deputy
Chief Joan DiBattista, the entire territory listing of
Deputies is now complete with Jeannie Franklin coming
on board. Thanks to Jeannie and all our Deputies for
their expertise and program support. Next up is adding
block captains across Lake Ashton. A full Team meeting
is coming up. Watch for Deputy Chief’s place, date and
time for the Team meeting notice. NW will be
participating in early August to celebrate 39 years of the
“National Night Out” program originated by Law
Enforcement. Details will be forthcoming. We
appreciate all the team work and support from many!
Questions, ideas, etc., contact Deputy Chief Joan
DiBattista at 239.851.7899.
CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL
By Mike Weissberg
Since all residents are part of Neighborhood Watch you
are watching things around you. Citizens Assisted Patrol
does this by patrolling our streets. Our job is to look for
things that do not belong in our community. Our
presence with our lights flashing while patrolling our
streets is our deterrent to help keep our streets safe.
CAP is always looking for more volunteers to patrol our
streets. Our job is to be the eyes, ears and presence for
the Sheriff’s Department. Patrols are once a week for two
hours. Applications are available in the Clubhouse and
HFC. For more information contact Mike Weissberg
917-482-3151 (leave a message).
WATCH FOR ALL IGATORS
Female alligators build a mound nest of soil, vegetation,
or debris and deposit an average of 32 to 46 eggs in late
June or early July. Incubation requires approximately
63-68 days, and hatching occurs from mid-August
through early September. Alligators and crocodiles are an
important part of Florida's heritage and play a valuable
role in the ecosystems where they live. Those who live
near lakes and ponds should expect to see alligators
from time-to-time but they should never be fed or
approached. People concerned about an alligator should
call our toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWCGATOR
(866-392-4286).

A LOVE SONG
2022 | PG | 1H 21MIN
Faye (Dale Dickey) is a lone
traveler biding her time fishing,
birding and stargazing at a rural
Colorado campground as she awaits the arrival of
Lito (Wes Studi), a figure from her past who is
navigating his own tentative and nomadic journey
across the rugged West. Like the country music
that has traditionally channeled the heartbreak
and resilience of Americans in search of
themselves and others, A Love Song weaves a
lyrical and ultimately joyful refrain out of the
transformative act of being alone -- and reminds
us that love can nourish and mystify at any age.

2021 | PG-13 | 1HR 57MIN
In his acclaimed debut as a
filmmaker, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson presents
a powerful and transporting documentary-part
music film, part historical record created around
an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture
and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the
summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of
Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was
filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey
Park). The footage was never seen and largely
forgotten--until now. SUMMER OF SOUL shines a
light on the importance of history to our spiritual
well-being and stands as a testament to the
healing power of music during times of unrest,
both past and present. The feature includes neverbefore-seen
concert performances by Stevie
Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone,
Gladys Knight & the Pips, Ray Baretto, Abbey
Lincoln & Max Roach and more.

LALGA
By Jackie Tressler
The LALGA congratulates our Red Hoagland Winners!
First Place: T Utting
Second Place Tie: Patti Panone, Kathy Ryan
Fourth Place: Bev Hines
The competition was extremely close this year with $1
separating First and Fourth place. We thank Red
Hoagland for their continued support and look forward
to our new challenge!
Our continued purpose of the LALGA is to promote
interest in golf among women players, encourage
competition, and provide opportunities for fellowship.
Every Tuesday in League play we focus on the first two
of those goals. On the second Tuesday of each month,
we focus on the third goal, fellowship, after League play
at our monthly luncheon. It provides members with an
opportunity to meet new members, relax a bit and
interact with each other in a purely social setting while
enjoying a nice lunch and a cold beverage.
We encourage all members to participate in our
Summer Tropics Tournament on July 10 and 11 with our
luncheon in the Eagles Nest on the 11th. Show your
tropical attire and come out for two days of fun and
camaraderie!

In closing, the LALGA welcomes Dawn Neigh to our
board as the new Publicity Chair. Please send a huge
thanks to Dawn for taking on the responsibility of this
role and promoting our league throughout our
community. Stay hydrated and remember — for the
summer, 9 hole sign up is available!

grow the same? Members are always willing to
help. There are many experts, novices and
beginners all with the same goal; to garden.

By Sandy White
The National Senior Games will be held in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, July 7-18, and a swimmer from Lake
Ashton will compete. Congratulations and best wishes
to Sharon Swanson, who along with teammates Sandy
Papineau & Cathy Liska, qualified to participate in
Nationals by placing in the top 4 in one or more events
at the Florida Senior Games last December. Only
Sharon is able to go. She is excited to go to Nationals,
and as part of the event she and the other Games'
competitors have been invited to attend a Pirates'
baseball game. We all wish her success in Pittsburgh!
To participate in the State Senior Championships,
swimmers must place in the top 5 at a Senior Regional
meet. There are a number of regional age group meets
around the state during the year in which our club
participates. Some swim club members are aiming for
one or more regional meets in the Fall, with a goal of
qualifying for the 2023 State Senior Games.
The Lake Ashton Swim Club offers three swim
improvement sessions each week. All are welcome as
"workouts" are tailored for the fitness swimmer as well
as the competitive swimmer. Many participants do the
workout with no thought of competing. Contact Coach
Sandy White sandyw1994@aol.com for more info.

WOODWORKERS , LLC
By Chris Hunziker
SINGLES CLUB
By Maureen Ziegler
LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for
Did you know that the Lake Ashton woodshop is
not a community amenity? But, it is a community
asset. Often, new residents will say the woodshop
was one of the things that really attracted them
when they were looking for a home to buy. The
member-only supported woodshop here at Lake
Ashton is a well-equipped and safe place for
members to work, and membership is open to
both those who are skilled woodworkers and all
(both men and women) who are interested in
developing some woodworking skills.
Non-members also enjoy the benefit of living in a
community where skilled members of the
woodshop have often provided a service when
they needed something repaired or built, and their
subsequent “donations” to the shop have helped
to support the continuing existence of the
woodshop. Members of the woodshop have also
provided service to people who requested knife
and scissor sharpening. An outside quilters guild
highly praised the quality of that work when it was
done for them.
At the June board meeting it was suggested that
we offer a “Project Of The Month” and in the
coming months we hope to have someone at one
Monday Coffee hour each month to showcase
something built in the woodshop. You will not only
have the opportunity to see what has been made
but an opportunity to place your order for having
one made especially for you. In July, Fred Powell
will bring in an energy-efficient (no electricity
required) phone amplifiers that he made. In
August, Jim Sullivan plans to bring in a “cooling
rack” and in September, Chris Hunziker plans to
bring in a handy, must-have wooden stool. After
that, who knows what ideas might surface? We
hope that you will come and see. If you have
questions about the woodshop or the monthly
projects call Jim Sullivan at 401-954-4918 or Fred
Powell 804-746-2447
single residents. The group meets monthly on the
first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. In June, 33 people attended the meeting.
The group discussed future lunches, dinners, and
other activities. Donations of money may be given,
or gifts can be purchased from the list that Susan
will distribute for the Christmas in July Senior
Orphans outreach. If you choose to purchase a gift,
please let Susan know. Susan arranged a dinner at
The Crooked Bass. Single Mingle will be held on
July 20 in the HFC Craft Room. Volunteers are
needed to help set up and clean up. If you would
like to take part in activities with other singles,
attend the meeting on July 2.

Know Thy Health
By Lynda Hadley
We all love living here in Lake Ashton, we enjoy our
free time and the ability to create the life we’ve
imagined. We feel good! But, wouldn’t you like to
feel great!? Think of your body as a machine. It needs
fuel to operate and a little maintenance to ensure
that it’s able to run effectively. Food is our fuel, and
the quality of the food we eat determines how well
our body reacts to our daily activities, as well as the
way you look and feel. If you feel tired, or weak, or
maybe dealing with brain fog; you may be
malnourished. Then there’s the maintenance or
fitness aspect of health that focus on maintaining
flexibility, strength, balance, and stamina. These
aspects of health will gradually decline with age if we
don’t incorporate them into our lifestyle. It may seem
daunting but it doesn’t take hours in the gym to see
and feel the benefits. Start with baby steps. Drink a
little more water, incorporate a little more fruits and
vegetables. Chose more baked or grilled foods
rather than fried. Walk more (even around the
house), take deep breaths, try gentle stretching or
yoga. Everything has a beginning. So let’s start this
journey with an honest evaluation of where we are;
then find ways to incorporate new healthier habits
that will get us where we want to be.
SUMMER LINE DANCING
CLASS

experience needed. Dances will be easy and fun,
dances used at River Ranch will be taught.

they are easier than they look. Note: Wear shoes

The Lake Ashton Amateur Radio Association is
trying to judge if residents are interested in a
Technician licensing class given at Lake Ashton once
a week for three weeks, two hours per class
(September 5, 12, and 19) at the HFC Poker Room.
After completion of the class the Lake Wales
Repeater Association has test sessions for all levels
of license the first Saturday of the month at the
Winter Haven Red Cross building. If you are
interested, send your name, phone number and
email address to DBishop1867@gmail.com (please
respond even if you have already done so). You will
be advised if there is sufficient interest to hold a
class. We are also offering to assist anyone wishing
to upgrade to a General Class license, on a one on
one basis, so if you would like this type of assistance
please let us know and we will get you together
with an Elmer (Ham Tutor) who is willing to assist
you by emailing a note to the above address. We
may also do that for people wishing to get a
Technician license if there are not enough people
interested to hold a full class.
