Have you seen the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’? The first 20
minutes of the film is a powerful account of war, portraying the
first landing crafts arriving at the Normandy beaches on D Day.
The film successfully brings to life the events of that day, as a
vivid act of remembrance.
From a biblical perspective, the word remembrance means
making present a past reality, so that we can benefit from it
today. On Remembrance Sunday we think about those who
have given their lives in wars over the years, as well as those
who continue to grieve over their lost loved ones. We want to
make their sacrifice in past conflicts real for us today, so that we
can engage with the horror of war and those enduring suffering
today.
It involves dealing with the why question in the face of relentless
tragedies and injustices: why does God allow such suffering to
take place? One of the great themes of the Scriptures is that
God identifies with the suffering. But the Christian faith goes
beyond this! It affirms that in Jesus, God’s Son, divinity became
involved in suffering and death on the cross. It is at Calvary that
we see how God Himself knows what it is to lose a loved one in
an unprovoked attack. ‘I could never myself believe in God if it
were not for the Cross. In the real world of pain, how could one
worship a God who was immune to it?’ (John Stott).
Although we don’t fully understand the reason why God allows
evil and suffering to continue, we do know what the reason isn’t!
It can’t be that He doesn’t love us! God so loved us and hates
suffering that He was willing to come down and get involved in
our hurting world. This can be a source of real strength on such
an occasion.

lives are truly honoured, not forgetting those who are risking
their lives in conflicts today? An appropriate response is to
actively work and pray for justice in our world, especially where
there is inequality and conflict. In a divided
world we are also called to renew our
efforts to work for peace. We need to be
serious about being peacemakers,
especially where it involves those close to
us. As Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they will be called sons
of God’ (Matt 5:9).
(Written by Revd John Tyler, Parish Pump Web Site)
We remember
The Somme, Dunkirk and Passchendaele
Cause us to think of times of war,
When men and boys went bravely out
They fought, some died and returned no more.
They gave their all that we should live,
We never should forget such cost,
Remembering with thankful hearts
Our freedom gained as lives were lost.
Another Man gave up His life,
Another war, another fight,
With all mankind held fast in chains
As darkness fell as black as night.
The cost was high, a sinless life
To break the chains and set us free,
The Lamb of God on Calvary’s cross
Paid that price for you, for me.

✤ Father, in these short, dark days of November, with all the
uncertainties and complications in our new Covid 19
landscape, help us to feel the reassurance of Your presence
in the gift of each new day. Help us to be guided through the
darkness by Your light – by Jesus, who will never leave us or
forsake us.
In His name – the name above pandemics and shortages
and rising bills and all anxieties – we pray. Amen.
Daphne Kitching
✤ We continue to pray for all who are ill, especially those
suffering from Covid. We give thanks for those who have
recovered or are recovering. We remember families and
friends who have lost loved ones. Strengthen all by Your
Spirit.
✤ We pray for all who live, work and minster in our Benefice of
All Saints Church, Fishponds and St. Mary’s Church,
Fishponds.
✤ We pray, Lord, that as the COP 26 Climate Summit is upon
us, that the leaders of the nations will both commit and do.
Remembrance
O God, of truth and justice, we hold before you
those people who have been injured or died in
active service.
As we honour their courage and cherish their
memory, may we put our faith in your future; for
you are the source of life, peace and hope, now
and forever. Amen
✤ As our thoughts turn towards Advent and Christmas, help us
all to welcome the infant, Jesus and also welcome the adult
Jesus into our lives.

All Saints Day is on Monday 1st November, and it is also the
Gift Day for All Saints Church. This year we are continuing with
raising money to upgrade our sound system and installing a
screen, plus projector.
We do have some money that was raised from last year’s Gift
Day donations, which is enabling us to start phase 1, once we
get the faculty from the Diocese.
We still need, to raise a further £11,665 to upgrade the sound
system.
There will be special envelopes, marked ‘Gift Day’ throughout
November on the table at the back of church for you to make
any donations.
If you pay tax you might like to Gift Aid your
donation by filling in your details on the envelope before handing
it in during a service or to a warden. Thank you.
8th - 10th October 2021
This retreat fellowship consists mainly of worshippers who
originate from St Mary’s Church and St John’s Church in
Fishponds and have continued to worship together by way of
this Retreat Weekend.
This year 3 people from St Marys, 2 from St Johns and 9 others
who used to worship in Fishponds, went on the retreat.
Friday 8th October was a beautiful sunny
autumn day to be driving to Llangasty Retreat
House, just outside Brecon. The house is
nestled alongside Llangorse Lake amidst the
Brecon Beacons. Due to Wales still legally
social distancing the numbers were limited
and masks were required to be worn.

led by the Revd Ian Wallace, Vicar of St Marys Yate.
Five Addresses on this topic were interspersed with Evening
and Morning Prayer, A Service of Light and two Eucharists.
There was an opportunity on Saturday afternoon to enjoy some
free time to walk along the lakeside, visit the bird hides, or take
a trip to Brecon.
Silence is from after Evening Prayer until Lunch the following
day. There is something quite special having breakfast in
silence overlooking the lake, watching the cattle, birds and mist
passing over the lake and mountain top.
Ian spoke about the biblical storms, storms at sea and storms of
life, particularly the storm of Covid and the loss of life.
In all
these storms there is a lamp which lights the way – a lamp of
faith to hold on to.
Everyone takes something different away with them. You don’t
always know what it at the time. For me it was the final Address
‘Refreshing our Call’. Reading 2 Corinthians 4: 1 - 15.
I end
with verses 8 -10. which speaks to me of my ‘Lamp of Faith’
‘we are often troubled, but not crushed; sometimes in doubt,
but never in despair; there are many enemies, but we are never
without a friend; and though badly hurt at times, we are not
destroyed. At all times we carry in our mortal bodies the death
of Jesus, so that his life may also be seen in our bodies’
Date for next years Retreat 7th - 9th October at Llangasty. The
Leader has yet to be arranged. The cost is about £180 which
includes, comfy accommodation, all meals, interspersed with
tea and coffee. It also includes a gift token for the Leader and a
token to the kitchen staff for their lovely cooking. Do think about
experiencing this relaxing, spiritual and peaceful weekend next
year.

‘Open Church’ at St. Mary’s on Sunday 3rd October, was a new
kind of service. This is just a little insight into what took place.
Church started at the usual time of 10am, when
tea / coffee was served. A presentation was
given on Christian Aid, as they were celebrating
their 75th Anniversary. A couple of short films
were shown, including their ‘Thanksgiving Service’. We then
took part in a short quiz. The service took approximately ¾hour.
Next ‘Open Church’ takes place on Sunday 7th November,
10am at St. Mary’s Church. The topic will be on ‘Anti Slavery’
led by Revd. Diane.
All are welcome to come along.
This service took place at 10.30am on Sunday 10th October.
Don’t let the title put you off, it was by no means MUDDY!
It started outside in the grounds, glorious blue skies above, we
sat on logs, some on chairs, to hear about ‘balance’ and to try
various ways to balance. Then we heard the story about Mary
and Martha, laid on our backs, relaxing but imagining ourselves
looking in on the scene in the room, where Jesus was talking to
Mary, while Martha was busy in the kitchen.
After the story we collected 2 twigs and 4 leaves.
Then went into Church and see if we could tie
our twigs together and hang the leaves on and
see if they all balanced. Some did manage this
task.
In our day to day life, we need
balance!
We then listened to another story about
St. Francis of Assisi, followed by prayers.
A lovely interactive family service.

Genesis, Revelation and points in between By Jo Swinney,
BRF, £8.99
BRF’s Advent book for 2021 covers far more than the 120 gospel
verses which take us from the angel Gabriel’s visit to Mary to the
escape to Egypt by Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus. In daily
readings, reflections and prayers, from Advent Sunday to Epiphany,
Jo Swinney sets the familiar – sometimes over-familiar – Christmas story in the
infinite context of God’s creation.
Let it Slow - An Advent Calendar with a Difference.
By Stephen Cotterell, £6.99
Christmas is one of the most joyful times of year, and it can also
be one of the most stressful. It comes laden with expectations
and, for many, overshadowed by difficult memories and emotions.
If every other day of the year has us running in different
directions, driven by the bleeping demands of our phones and
devices, Christmas makes us run faster still. This understanding
and uplifting book offers another way to approach Christmas and to discover how
its joys and promises can restore our lives, not add to their burdens. You are
invited to take a few minutes each day during December to join in a conversation
with the bestselling author, Stephen Cottrell, who offers simple reflections and
practical suggestions for making your Christmas the celebration it is meant to be.

Poppies
It was 100 years ago this month, on 11th Nov 1921, that
Remembrance poppies were sold for the first time in British and
Commonwealth countries to commemorate military personnel
who died in war.
Amid the mud, blood and carnage of trench warfare in World War
1, tens of thousands of bright red poppies had grown, marking
the graves of the fallen. This led John McCrae, a Canadian army
physician who had lost a colleague, to write “In Flanders Fields”,
In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place, and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly.
This image inspired the
adoption of a red poppy
as the symbol of all
soldiers who had died
in conflict. In the UK
they are sold by the
Royal British Legion to
raise funds for current
and former members
of the British Armed
Forces. Around 30
million poppies are
sold each year.

Well I hate to say it, but the end of 2021 is nearly upon us
and what another year it has been! It’s good to see that our
everyday lives and routines are gradually coming back, but we
still need to take special care, if we are to carry on. Respect and
look after each other.
And so we come to the last deadline for 2021 and this will be
Sunday 14th November, for the December issue.
If you know of
any Christmas events that are coming up that we could let people
know about then please contact anita@lavis.org.uk or call
0117 3079117.
As you see All Saints Church and St. Mary’s are holding their
Christmas Fairs, if you have items that you could donate towards
them for their tombola’s or raffle stalls it would be appreciated.
Also nearly new toys and homemade cakes. Thank you and
hope so see you at one off them.
Take care and stay safe. Anita
