May is National Military Appreciation Month and this is a great time to honor current and former
members of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of
freedom. More information on National Military Appreciation Month, ways to support our Military and
Veterans, and ways staff at the Clubhouse and HFC are honoring Lake Ashton veterans and their
families can be found on page 24.
A second round of COVID-19 vaccinations were administered on April 9. The Lake Ashton CERT team
once again stepped up to the plate and helped over 300 residents receive vaccinations in a timely and
organized manner. Thank you again to all the CERT members that volunteered for these events. The
Clubhouse is currently in Phase IV of the reopening plan. A link to a copy of the full plan is listed at the
bottom of each email blast that is sent from the Clubhouse. Recently at the April Board of Supervisors
meeting, Supervisors voted to remove the requirement of masks while exercising or while eating and/or
drinking when sitting stationary. Masks are still required in other areas of the Clubhouse. For questions
regarding procedures for the current phase please contact Christine Wells, Community Director LA (LW)
CDD at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com
The preliminary fiscal year 2022 budget (October 1, 2021 - September 30, 2022) was reviewed at the
April 19 LACDD BOS meeting and an updated version with the changes requested by the Board will be
presented at the May 17 meeting for consideration. Residents are encouraged to attend. A wrap up
report regarding actions taken at the April 19 LACDD Budget Workshop and regular meeting in
addition to the Joint CDD Meeting was sent out via
email on April 21. Email cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com if
you would like a copy. Residents can visit
lakeashtoncdd.com for more information including
approved meeting minutes, agendas, and other
important CDD documents.
Staff is happy to announce the LA Times is now
available electronically! It is emailed out, along with
the monthly calendar of events by the first of each
month. This is a great way to stay connected while
traveling or when gone for the summer. Please note,
due to inconsistent weather patterns during the
months of May through August, the LA Times will be
available by pickup only at the Clubhouse and HFC.
Residents away for the summer should still inform the
Clubhouse Activities Desk to help maintain accurate
counts.

Projects seem to be an ever-going process, but staff is
taking on some outdoor projects that are best
completed before the heat of summer comes upon us.
The Porte-cochere project is complete and came in on
budget and ahead of time! The new ceiling is capable
of being power washed and it’s structurally more
sound than before the work was done. The finials on
the fencing on HWY. 653 are painted and the black
posts are being painted. The pool coping has been
replaced due to cracking from excess weight
demands. The ladder was moved, and weight limit
signs were put up to prevent further cracking.
A spa heater was replaced from a recent lightning hit. Two wireless Internet access points needed to be
replaced from the same lightning hit as well. A security camera was moved from the HFC kitchen area to
the Rose Garden. Phase IV COVID procedure is out so we are enjoying a somewhat less restrictive
environment these days. Our two temporary staff
positions ended on April 14th. Marina and Evelyn
did a great job and they were a great asset to
Lake Ashton II CDD. The Board member in charge
of liaison with the two dog parks belonging to LA
II CDD is now Duff Hill. Colette was doing a great
job but she chose to focus on her other very time
consuming areas of responsibility. Duff will do a
great job in this new role.

We just finished Volunteer Appreciation Month,

yearlong volunteers who are often forgotten
about except when there is a complaint to be
delivered. Our Board of Supervisors work through
very trying circumstances, spend countless hours

all year, so please give them a verbal thank you

ENTRANCE GATE
REMINDERS
Please use
caution when
entering and
exiting the
community
via the
Thompson
Nursery Road entrance. The entry gates are not
on a sensor, they are set to open for 3 seconds
and close even if there is a car under the gate.
Cars should stop at the stop sign, hit the button
on the entrance gate remote, and proceed
through the open gate. If residents hit the button
on the remote coming off of Thompson Nursery
Road it does not allow for enough time for the
vehicle to make it through the gate and could
potentially cause damage to your vehicle and the
gate arm. If any of the gates are damaged due to
negligence on the driver's part any costs involved
COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease
that can lead to severe illness and death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, senior citizens and guests
with underlying medical conditions are
especially vulnerable. By visiting the
amenities, you voluntarily assume all risks
related to exposure to COVID-19.
with the replacement or repair of the gate arm will
be the responsibility of the driver.
While it may appear to be helpful to hit the button
on your gate remote to open the gate for a
resident that appears to be having difficulty with
their remote this could be someone trying to gain
access to the community for ill purposes. If a
resident is having difficulty with their remote
security will assist. Please be patient and wait until
the car ahead of you receives the help they need
and proceeds through the gate before you hit the
button on your remote to enter the gate.
When exiting the community, any vehicle close to
the height of the overhang should use the right
lane to exit the community even if turning left on
Thompson Nursery Road. Not doing so puts your
vehicle at risk of damage not to mention possible
property damage that will be the responsibility of
the driver. If unsure if the vehicle is close to the
height of the overhang please err on the side of
caution and use the right side to exit.

LAKE ASHTON (LW)
ARCHITECTURAL REVIEW
COMM I T T E E ( A R C )
By Bob Sosinski
The Lake Ashton Architectural Review Committee
is committed to maintaining the beautiful
aesthetics of our community and homes. We
require all homeowners to submit an Architectural
Change Request whenever you are making
changes or repairs to the exterior of you home.
After you submit an ARC Change Request, your
area ARC Representative will review the request
with you regarding compliance and completeness
of the Request. This process ensures that all
changes conform to the requirements of the
Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions of the
Association as well as to the Architectural
guidelines.
A common omission in submitting an Architectural
Change Request is to not include a plot plan with
dimensions when adding structures such as a lanai
or adding or modifying landscape beds or pavers.
These types of changes cannot be approved
without a plot plan showing dimension. All new
homeowners received a copy of the survey with
their closing documents from the developer.
Copies of the surveys are available from the Lake
Wales Building Department. A copy of the survey,
marked up to show the proposed changes, is the
mos t acceptable means to sat i s fy thi s
requirement.
The Architectural Review Committee is looking for
volunteers to serve on the committee and who
want to meet and work with fellow residents to
help maintain Lake Ashton as one of the premier
55+ communities n in Central Florida. If interested

The Board would like to thank the retiring Directors,

work and positive contributions to the LW HOA.
Message from New Board Member Ken Rickey
As a new member of the Lake Ashton (East) Board of
Directors I would like to encourage each of you to
do your part in making this community the best it
can be. It goes beyond just keeping your house and
yard looking great. Many of you are doing a fantastic
job of that. A great community is not just made up
of nice houses. It is made up of people willing to do
the right thing at the right time, like helping a
neighbor with a project they can’t do on their own,
picking up that piece of litter that blew in from
somewhere instead of letting “someone else” do it;
or volunteering for a job, position or function that
will add to the betterment of the community and
oneself. A lot of residents here do a lot of
volunteering. It benefits the community as well as
the soul. Have you volunteered lately? Maybe make
the ARC a possibility. It will take commitment and a
strong personality, but YOU can do it!

ALLIGAT ORS
Alligators play a valuable role in
the ecology of our state’s
wetlands. Alligators are predators and help keep other aquatic animal
populations in balance. Generally, alligators less than four feet in length are
not large enough to be dangerous unless handled. However, if you encounter
any alligator that you believe poses a threat to people, pets or property, call
the Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWCGATOR (866-392-4286). Nuisance alligators are killed, not
relocated. Visit MyFWC.com/Gators for more information.
Be aware of the possibility of alligators when you are in or near fresh or brackish water. Bites may occur
when people do not pay close enough attention to their surroundings near water.
• Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
• Dogs and cats are similar in size to the natural prey of alligators. Don’t allow pets to swim, exercise or
drink in or near waters that may contain alligators. Dogs often attract an alligator’s interest.
• Leave alligators alone. State law prohibits killing, harassing or possessing alligators. Handling even
small alligators can result in injury.
• Never feed alligators – it’s dangerous and illegal. When fed, alligators can overcome their natural
wariness and learn to associate people with food. When this happens, some of these alligators have to
be removed and killed.
• Dispose of fish scraps in garbage cans at boat ramps and fish camps. Do not throw them into the water.
Although you are not intentionally feeding alligators when you do this, the result can be the same.
• Observe and photograph alligators only from a distance. Remember, they’re an important part of
Florida’s natural history as well as an integral component of aquatic ecosystems

By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Summer is right around the corner and with it,
many will be “on the road” visiting their favorite
places or seeing family and friends. Your
Neighborhood Watch team would like to remind
you to be prepared both at home and when you
are traveling. Please let your Neighborhood Watch
Coordinators know you will be out of town so they
can give your residence a little extra surveillance.
Check out the insert in this issue for a list of all the
coordinators and the areas to which they are
assigned. There are numerous things you should
do before leaving such as: setting your alarm
system, making sure all your locks are in working
order, stopping mail and newspaper delivery,
securing outside furniture and belongings
(remember, hurricane season is coming), etc. You
may perform a simple “security survey” of your
house (a checklist will be available at both HFC and
Clubhouse Desks). Have a safe and wonderful
summer!
Currently there is an email
scam occurring where
t h i e v e s , p o s i n g a s
someone the recipient
knows and are phishing for
personal, financial, and other private information.
You might get an email from someone you know
asking you to perform a “task” or a “favor” to
purchase Google Play gift cards and email them
the redemption codes. While the sender’s name
and email address may look like a family member,
friend, or colleague, this is actually a sophisticated
phishing scam disguised as a trustworthy request
from someone you know. Do not buy gift cards
and respond with the redemption codes. If you
want to confirm whether or not the request is
legitimate, do not respond directly to the email
sender or click on any links in their email. Instead,
contact the person requesting the gift codes face
to face or via an alternative communication
method (e.g., the phone number you regularly use
to call/text them). Source: fraud.org, a project of

APPRECIATION MONTH (NMAM)
is celebrated every May and is a
declaration that encourages U.S.
citizens to observe the month in
a symbol of unity. NMAM honors
current and former members of
the U.S. Armed Forces, including
those who made the ultimate sacrifice
i n t h e pursuit of freedom. NMAM
started as a simple idea; to gather America
around its military family to honor,
remember, recognize and appreciate those
who have served and those now serving and
to know the history behind it all. May is
characterized by six national observances
highlighting the contributions of those who
have served.
LOYALTY DAY — SATURDAY, MAY 1, 2021
This is a day set aside for the reaffirmation
of loyalty to the United States, and to
reflect on the proud heritage of our
American freedom.
PUBLIC SERVICE RECOGNITION WEEK
(PSRW) — MAY 2 THROUGH 8, 2021
The first full week in May is set aside to
honor the men and women who serve our
nation as federal, state, county and local
government employees and ensure that our
government is the best in the world.
MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY
FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2021
Traditionally set for the Friday before
Mother’s Day, this is a day to honor military
spouses with appropriate ceremonies and
activities. Recognizes the important role our
military families play in keeping the Armed
Forces strong and the country safe.
VICTORY IN EUROPE DAY (V-E DAY)
SATURDAY, MAY 8, 2021
May 8th, 1945 is the day when Germans
throughout Europe uncondit ional ly
surrendered to the Allies. This day marked
the end of World War II in Europe.
ARMED FORCES DAY
SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2021
Celebrated the third Saturday in May every
year, this is a single holiday for citizens to
come together and thank our military
members for their patriotic service in
support of this country. This day honors
everyone serving in all the U.S. Military
branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard,
Marines, Navy, Space Force.
MEMORIAL DAY
MONDAY, MAY 31, 2021
A Federal holiday observed on the last
Monday in May to commemorate the men
and women who died while in military
service. All Americans are encouraged to
pause, wherever they are, at 3 pm local time
for a minute of silence.
WAYS TO SUPPORT MILITARY & VETERANS
• Display the American Flag at your home
• Send a care package to a soldier
• Encourage elected officials to recognize
military and veterans
• Thank someone in uniform or a veteran by
surprising them with a special treat
• Donate to a veteran or military charity

in need
• During the month of May residents can
stop by the Wall of Honor in the Clubhouse
Foyer to place a picture with the branch of
service for themselves or family members
that are veterans, on active duty, or made
the ultimate sacrifice. Any veterans who
would like a picture taken by staff can
stop by the Clubhouse Activities Desk
Monday-Thursday from 10 am — 3 pm.
• Throughout the month of May the HFC
will be recognizing Lake Ashton Veterans
with special media highlighting a Lake
Ashton Veteran weekly, and trivia to test
your knowledge of the United States
Armed Forces. Don't forget to sign up for
the Armed Forces Golf Tournament. More
information is listed on the next page.

LALGA
By Lydia Fichtman
What an unforgettable
year for the LALGA! The closing “Hats Off to Golf”
was spectacular as you can see from the amazing
picture. Congratulations to the closing committee
and all involved in making this and all the 2020-21
events successful. The Pink Ribbon was a stand-out
bringing in over $25,000. WOW! Now the group is
looking forward to 2021-2022 with hopes of no
virus, no masks, no quarantines, and no social
distancing. Let’s put 2020-2021 behind us and
approach the new season with vigor and vitality.
One question that arose
from the tournaments this
year was how to correctly
use a mulligan. Here are
the answers: 1. Mark you
ball before hitting in case
you think you might want
to use a mulligan; 2. Hit
the mulligan before your
opponents hit; 3. Once
you hit the mulligan, it becomes the ball in play and
the original ball is dead. You may not take a
provisional mulligan. If there are any questions
please ask the rules guru Colette McKie.
Spotlight on Muriel Bouman
Originally from Illinois, Mur Bouman graduated from
Timothy Christian HS and attended
Calvin University in Grand Rapids,
Michigan, where she met Phil, her
husband of almost 50 years. She
married after her sophomore year,
finished her Bachelor’s and went on to
receive her Master’s from Western
Michigan University. Muriel taught for 30 years and
retired from teaching in 2007. Muriel and Phil have 3
children and 6 grandchildren. In 2010, after looking
for retirement communities in Arizona, Hawaii,
Tennessee and South Carolina, Muriel and Phil
decided to visit some friends in Lake Ashton. They
soon met with a realtor and voilà moved in to a
home on Waterford.
30
They sold both their home and cottage in Michigan
but decided to be snowbirds so they purchased a
home in Canadian Lakes in Michigan. Last year,
Muriel and Phil moved within Lake Ashton to Riviera
Court. For the first two years, while fixing up their
home, Muriel played with the Niners but then
decided to move to the LALGA, which she finds
very congenial. She has been with the league ever
since. She would like to “thank the LALGA for all
the good times on the course.”
Besides golf, which she has played for a very long
time, Muriel plays cards, reads, is a people person
and a great organizer. Muriel is a delight to be
around. Please take a minute to say hello if you see
her out and about on the course.
LA NINERS
By Diane Struble
The weather was beautiful and the turnout was
fantastic for the closing luncheon on April 6.
Meeting in the parking lot and distributing year-end
gifts helped set the tone for the day's festivities.
The game was a four person scramble which allows
for a relaxing game. After a great lunch provided by
Vicki and the Eagle's Nest crew, the fun continued
with a raffle and, for the lucky ones, a surprise under
their placemats. A heartfelt thank you was given to
exiting president Cindy Mendez and treasurer
Elizabeth Meigel. An election was held resulting in
Karen Ferrande as the new vice president, Mary Lou
Jameson as secretary, and Mary Lopez as president.
The summer schedule began April 13, loads of fun
games are scheduled to try and combat the heat.
One regular game will be held each month for
handicaps. Contact vice president Karen Ferrande
at 207.451.0143 or kferrande@gmail.com if you
have any questions.

LA AMATEUR RADIO CLUB
By Claude Brown
Field Day is an annual open house for the public to
visit and learn about amateur radio operations and
operators. Your Lake Ashton Amateur Radio Club
will join 40,000 “hams” in the USA on Saturday,
June 26, 2021. Members will set up and operate
multiple radio stations within the Pavilion from
Noon to 6pm. All residents are invited to visit and
experience the capabilities of worldwide radio
communications. Members will be available to
answer questions and explain the services amateur
radio offers to our community.
Modern amateur radio encompasses digital
electronics, computing, satellites, moon bounce
and more methods of communication. Amateur
radio operators have provided communications
support to government and relief agencies in times
of natural disaster when normal communications
are interrupted or inadequate for the needs of
human relief operations. The purpose and goal is
to communicate community needs and secure the
best level of assistance available when needed.

Greetings LA Belles! It’s been a while since we were
able to share our monthly luncheons while enjoying
the friendship and camaraderie among other LA
Belles. I’m happy to announce that the Board invites
all of you back and especially to the new ladies in
Lake Ashton to join for lunch at Ashton Tap & Grill
on Wednesday, May 26 at noon. The group will once
again celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and just
plain ole good times, which were sorely missed.
The sign-up sheet will be at the Clubhouse Activities
Desk, along with the menu and cost. After making
your selection make your check out to the LA Belles.
If the Clubhouse rules still apply sign up early as
seating will be limited and wearing masks will be
mandatory.
The Board and I are looking forward to seeing
everyone again and welcoming new and future
Belles!
It's hard to believe that May has arrived already —
where has the time gone? At the April meeting it
was agreed upon that May will be our last meeting
until we start up again in the fall. The May meeting
will be held on May 10 at 10:30 am in the Cinema.
Let's all bring along some pictures to share and
discuss.
I want to thank all those members that supported
the club by attending the monthly meetings during
these difficult times. Unfortunately the guest
speaker programs, photo shoots and the Fine Arts
& Photography Show all had to be placed on hold.
I'm going to remain optimistic that many if not all of
these activities can once again resume this fall.
Watch the LA Times for information on when the fall
session will begin. Have a safe and enjoyable
summer and find time to enjoy your photography
hobby.

PICKLEBALL
ASSOCIATION
By Lisa Savala
The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association is back in
full swing. The 2021 annual meeting was held April
12 at the Clubhouse with numerous members in
attendance. The objectives of the meeting were to
elect new officers, approve bylaws and to give old
and new members a chance to ask questions about
where we are headed as an association.
Prior to the election of the new officers, Duff Hill
was thanked for all his efforts as president over the
past two years. It was impressive to hear all of the
association’s accomplishments over that period.
Thanks again Duff!
The new slate of officers will be led by Calvin
Eakins as President. Calvin previously held the
position of Vice President. New Vice President is
Chuck Caesar. Chuck is a relative newcomer to
Lake Ashton and to pickleball, but is excited to
help grow the enthusiasm for pickleball at Lake
Ashton. Continuing in her role as Treasurer is Lisa
Savala. Lisa has done a tremendous job of
managing finances in the past and her willingness
to continue is appreciated. An individual to serve
as Secretary is still needed. If you would be
interested, please contact any one of the officers.
Over the next few weeks, the officers will meet to
lay out a plan for the coming year and organize
several committees to tackle some of the issues
that have been brought forward. If you are
interested in serving on a committee, please
contact an officer. If you are not a pickleball player
and are interested in learning; reach out to one of
the officers or just show up to play. Pickleball
Association dues are $10 per person per year or
$25 per person for three years. The dues pay for
balls and upgrades to the courts. Looking forward

By Valerie Metzner, LAPA Secretary
The Lake Ashton Pickleball Association (LAPA) was
the proud host of BYOB Trivia III on March 26 at
the HFC. Seventeen teams of four competed, but
only one came out on top. A crew of Lake Ashton's
finest called "The Dink Side of the Moon" won the
$100 first place prize and graciously donated it
back to the Association. These are the sort of
people pickleball is packed with, fun folks who give
back. Winning team members were Denise Tessier,
Graham Littlehales, Kathy and Pete Liska.
While the scores were being tallied between
rounds, the inimitable and adorable Dan and Jane
Storrs hosted a game of "Has anybody...", a Lake
Ashton version of Let's Make a Deal. Many fun
facts about attendees were brought to light and
then each winner was rewarded with a gift
certificate or lottery ticket. It's safe to say many
people got lucky that night!
Evenings like that one don't just happen; it takes
many sponsors and door prize donors to make it
great. With that in mind, please remember to
consider calling or visiting the businesses listed
below when you are in need of services, and
always let them know you are from Lake Ashton!
Below is a link to all the local businesses and their
contact numbers who contributed so much to
make the trivia night memorable. This and other
current information can be found on the LA
Pickleball webpage on lakeashtonliving.com.
On a personal note, this humble correspondent
wanted to thank the readers for all the positive
feedback regarding the monthly articles. It has
been a joy and honor to write them. (LAPA wishes
the best to Val as she moves to Utah to be near
her daughter and family. Her quick wit and smile
will be missed!)

By Vicki Creek
The weather may have been a little breezy and brisk but the bocce ball courts were
definitely hot as 16 teams battled it out on March 20th for the championship title.
An awards ceremony was held following the tournament at the LA Tap & Grill Bocce
Sponsors Jim and Kay Weaver of Weaver Loveless Law (pictured at right) presented
the winners with LA Tap & Grill gift cards and a Championship Medal. It was so
exciting to have 16 new players and 16 returning players in the
tournament this year. Bocce Ball is becoming very popular at
Lake Ashton. If you would like to learn or even if you already
know how to play come join us during open play every Monday
and Friday from 1 to 4 pm.
Congratulations to the following winners! (pictured below left to
right)
