Koppert Biological Systems produces sustainable
cultivation solutions for food crops and ornamental
plants . Together with growers and in partnership with
nature, we work to make agriculture and horticulture
healthier, safer, more productive and resilient . We
achieve this by using natural enemies to combat pest
infestations, bumblebees for natural pollination,
and biostimulants that support and strengthen the
crops both above and underground . Restoring and
protecting vital ecosystems in a natural way is the basis
for healthy crops and a balanced environment .
Add our quality know-how and consultancy services to
this and you will understand why an increasing number
of growers regards us as a partner with whom they can
realize their ambitions .
Research & Development
The ongoing attempt to discover and utilize natural
principles forms the backbone of Koppert’s activities .
Koppert’s strength lies in its ability to turn this
knowledge into practical applications which contribute
to finding solutions to prevailing problems .
In recent years, Koppert’s extensive know-how in microorganisms,
biostimulants and pheromones has inspired
countless solutions that have improved plant resilience
to the point that diseases hardly stand a chance .
Koppert’s Research & Development has frequently
been the source of biological solutions which were
subsequently adopted worldwide . It is thanks to the
company’s great perseverance that a whole variety
of specific mites can now be introduced to combat a
large number of infestations . Similar ground-breaking
discoveries with regard to pollination solutions have
provided the basis for enormous production efficiency
and quality improvement in many crops .
Continuous innovations have led to state of the art
versatile bioreactors that facilitate reliable and efficient
production of a wide range of beneficial microbes and
entomopathogenic nematodes .

Greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) and tobacco whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) are major pests in
many vegetable and ornamental crops . Due to its high resistance to most insecticides, tobacco whitefly poses a
particular threat to many crops .
Damage symptoms
• Larger larvae secrete honeydew while feeding,
on which mold develops . Larvae also produce
large amounts of wax on and around their dorsal
surface . These substances soil the crop and reduce
production and quality .
• Both whitefly adults and larvae extract food from
the plant . This influences the plant’s physiological
processes, and can reduce growth .
• Viruses may also be transmitted .
Method of control
Parasitic wasps: the female adult wasps parasitize the
developing whitefly larvae .
Predatory bugs: adults and nymphs actively search for
whitefly larvae on which to feed .

Aphids are a big problem in the agricultural sector . They can cause severe damage to several crops . Problematic

Damage symptoms
• Nymphs and adults feed on plant sap . Feeding
from certain species halts growth, causing curled
leaves . Sometimes yellow spots appear .
• Aphids excrete honeydew, which attracts
mold . Mold not only soils the crop, but reduces
photosynthesis which can stunt growth and
reproduction .
• Toxic substances can be transmitted into the
plant .
• Plant-pathogenic substances, particularly viruses,
can be transmitted into the plant .
Parasitic wasps: female wasps parasitize
aphids . The parasitized aphid swells and
hardens into a leathery-coloured mummy,
from which a new parasitic wasp emerges .

Sciarid flies (Sciaridae) and shore flies (Ephydridae) are pests, especially in young plant material . They can cause

Damage symptoms
Solutions
• Direct damage can occur to young and/or weak
plants in moist, organic environments, when
larvae feed on the plants’ roots . This reduces the
uptake of water and nutrients, causing the plants

levels of infection .
• Indirect damage is caused when larvae transmit
mites, nematodes, viruses and fungal spores .
Adult sciarid flies can also transmit various fungal
spores . Larval feeding sites are also potential
routes of fungal infection .

Biological pest management: Leaf miner
There are four leaf miner species which are common pests: the tomate leaf miner (Liriomyza bryoniae), the
American serpentine leaf miner (Liriomyza trifolii), the pea leaf miner (Liriomyza huidobrensis and Liriomyza
strigata) . Under natural conditions, the larvae of these species are well parasitized by several natural enemies .
Problems with leaf miners have increased as a result of the use of broad-spectrum pesticides: natural enemies are
killed and leaf miners develop resistance .
Damage symptoms
• Larvae cause mines . This can lead to cosmetic
damage, leaves drying out or even early
defoliation . The latter may affect the yield .
• Female adults cause feeding marks where they
feed . This causes cosmetic damage to the plants .
Indirect damage occurs when fungi or bacteria
enter the feeding areas .

Agricultural crops are exposed to a large variety of pests . As not all pests occur routinely and in large-scale
infestations, the destructive potential of such insects should not be ignored . Plant damage from mealy bugs, vine
weevils and caterpillars can be very serious .
Mealy bug
Vine weevil
Damage symptoms
• Mealybug nymphs and adults feed on plant
sap . This feeding reduces growth and causes
deformation and/or yellowing on the leaf .
Sometimes defoliation can occur . This can
reduce yield or cause cosmetic damage . Infested
flowering plants often drop their flowers .
• Vine weevil adults are only active at night . They
take semi-circular bites from the edges of leaves .
This notching decreases the ornamental value of
the plant . Larvae cause the most damage when
feeding on root hairs and the stem base .
• Caterpillars mainly feed on the undersides of
the leaves . The upper layer (epidermis) remains
undamaged . If caterpillars mature, they disperse
on the plant . They cause small holes in the leaves
initially, which become larger . Some species also
attack fruits or flowers . The large amount of
excrement from caterpillars soils the crop .

A healthy plant is the basis for high production . However, cultivation conditions for crops are seldom optimal .
Harmful fungi, viruses and bacteria can attack at any time . These weaken the crop and put it under more stress .
Trianum allows crops to grow healthily, resulting in increased uniformity and reduced wastage from substandard
plants .
Soil-borne diseases
Cultivation conditions for crops are seldom optimal .
If the capacity for disease suppression is low and the
plants are heavily laden, harmful micro-organisms
in the root environment in particular can severely
disrupt the growth of the crop . A number of common

Fusarium, Phytophtora, Rhizoctonia and Sclerotinia.

to stress caused by diseases, sub-optimal
feeding and watering regimes or climatic
conditions, and increases nutrient uptake.

Blowers
Releasing beneficials can be a time-consuming
process . The use of blowers is an effective method
for the simple and efficient dispersal of natural
enemies . Blowers such as the Airobug and the
Airbug/Mini-Airbug can be used indoors and
outdoors to distribute natural enemies over the crop
like a ‘protective blanket’ . This greatly enhances the
efficacy of the beneficial . With the blower you can
save up to 80% in labour hours compared to the
traditional method of release . The blower also makes
it possible to release multiple natural enemies at once .
For distribution of beneficials over the crop:
• Airbug: at least 3 metres
• Airobug: at least 10 metres
• Mini-Airbug: max . 2 metres

%Pollination
Successful fruit set is essential in many horticultural and agricultural crops . Pollination, the key to fruit setting, is
usually carried out by insects, animals, or by mechanical means . Historically, honeybees have been considered to be the
best pollinators of agricultural and horticultural crops . However, in the late 80’s it was discovered that bumblebees are
far more effective than honeybees under many conditions . Bumblebees can be used effectively for the pollination of a
variety of protected and open field crops .
Why bumblebees?
• Bumblebees are highly effective in pollinating
crops in glasshouses/greenhouses, polytunnels
and outdoor crops
• Bumblebees are less sensitive to low temperatures
and low light intensity
• Bumblebees are more inclined to stay in the crop
and they visit more flowers per minute
• Bumblebees are more inclined to work in adverse
weather conditions
• Bumblebees are non-swarming and less aggressive
• Bumblebees do buzz pollination
