Saugus Middle High welcomes Frank Kowalski, a versatile and veteran educator, as its new assistant principal
By Mark E. Vogler
A

his desk. “Everything is figureoutable,
it declares, as in the
actual title of a #1 New York

those who read it to overcome
obstacles with an optimistic
outlook to achieve their goals.
“I ran anti-bullying clubs and

the 30-year veteran educator
told The Saugus Advocate recently.
“I
believe all kids can learn if
they feel comfortable with you
and the school. I look forward
to teaching the students about
life and that every problem has
a solution. Relationships are
key to a great school and student
success, he said.
Saugus Middle High School
Principal Carla A. Scuzzarella
called Kowalski “a great addition
to our SMHS Leadership
team.
“He brings many years of experience
and knowledge, as
well as a positive, upbeat personality,
Scuzzarella said this
week.
“We are all excited to have
Frank join us, she said.
Kowalski was born and raised
in Chelsea, where he launched
his career as an educator as a
History/English teacher. The
skills he displayed as a student
athlete in high school helped
to shape a versatile and successful
career coaching and
officiating sports. Kowalski
graduated from Malden Catholic
in 1986. He played three
years of Varsity Basketball and
received the student/athlete
award during his senior year.
His interest in sports continued
at Salem State College,
where he played baseball for
two years and led the league in
home runs during his first season.
He went on to Cambridge
College, where he received his
CAGS degree in educational
leadership. He also has a master’s
degree from Salem State.

THE SAUGUS ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, SEPTEMbER 4, 2026
~ SHS Sports Roundup: Saugus girls’ soccer, golf teams ready for new season ~
By Dom Nicastro
The fall sports season has arrived
at Saugus High School, and the Sachems
are already back on the fields
and courses preparing for another
busy autumn.
As teams settle into their early-season
routines, there is plenty of optimism
surrounding the Saugus athletic
program. This week, we take a look at
what’s ahead for the girls soccer team
under Coach April Martinez and a golf
squad that has already started its season
with a victory under Coach Daniel
Bertrand.
GIRLS SOCCER CARRIES
ON A FAMILY TRADITION
For Martinez, leading the Saugus
girls soccer program is about considerably
more than wins and losses.
Martinez played four years at Salem
State College before joining her
father, Ted Moriello, on the Saugus
coaching staff. Moriello served as the
Sachems’ head coach for 18 seasons
and coached his daughter during her
senior year of high school.
Martinez watched her father complete
his final season while undergoing
treatment for terminal cancer.
He died only weeks after the season
ended.
“His dedication to the players, the
program, and the community left a
lasting impact on me, Martinez said.
After Chris Coviello, who succeeded
Moriello, retired, Martinez felt taking
over the program was a natural
progression.
“Saugus girls soccer
has always been a part
of my life, Martinez
said. “Coaching this
team is in my blood,
and taking on this role
was truly a no-brainer.
It is an honor to continue
the tradition and
legacy that means so
much to me and my family.
Senior captains Maria Garcia, Sydney
Deleidi and Amanda Rezendes
will lead a Sachems team Martinez believes
will be defined by work ethic,
determination and competitiveness.
Garcia is a second-year captain
whom Martinez calls the “glue holding
the team together. Deleidi, also a
leader in basketball and softball, was
Saugus’ fourth-leading scorer last season
with seven goals and four assists.
Martinez believes she could double
that production this fall. Rezendes will
anchor the defense and brings what
Martinez described as an outstanding
work ethic and determination.
There is talent beyond the captains,
too.
Sophomore Selena Garcia enters
the season stronger and faster after
an impressive offseason playing club
soccer. Senior Lindsay Mishol returns
to soccer and gives Saugus additional
speed and scoring ability. Senior transfers
Ava Lacasse of Malden and Tania
Pineros of Peabody have also made
strong early impressions.
The Sachems are young, however,
and replacing scoring lost to graduation
over the last two years will be a

major challenge.
“As our younger players gain
experience and our team continues
to grow together, I am
confident we can overcome
those losses and develop into
a well-rounded, competitive
team, Martinez said.
Saugus opens the regular
season Tuesday, Sept. 8, at
home against Salem.
Martinez is joined by JV coach Mike
Bluette and assistant Kylie Phillips, a
former Saugus captain and recent Salem
State graduate.
GOLF SACHEMS OPEN
WITH A VICTORY
Bertrand, now in his third season as
Saugus varsity golf coach and sixth
year with the program, enters the fall
with improved depth and an experienced
leadership group.
And the Sachems are already in the
win column.
Saugus opened Aug. 31 with a close
victory over Northeast Metro Tech. Senior
Trey Riley won from the No. 1 position,
eighth-grader Jennifer Li won
at No. 4, junior Nick Rinaldi prevailed
at No. 5 and Zack Modini earned a win
at No. 6.
“It took everyone to show up for our
first match, Bertrand said.
Riley, junior John Morello and senior
Artie O’Leary captain the 23-player
roster.
Riley is a returning all-star who led
Saugus in wins last season and regularly
competed against the Northeastern
Conference’s best golfers. Morello
is another returning all-star who
brings versatility and high expectations
for himself and his teammates.
O’Leary, meanwhile, has competed
at the varsity level for four years.
“Artie is the rock of Saugus golf and
has been since his freshman year, Bertrand
said. “He sets the example for the
younger golfers on the team, and they
all look up to him and listen when he
speaks — great golfer, better leader.
Li could become one of the team’s
most intriguing newcomers. The
eighth grader has already broken into
the rotation and earned a victory in
her first match.
Freshmen Grant Lenord and Devin
Voong, who both competed as eighth
graders, should also see match action.
Rinaldi is in his first season with the Sachems
and has already shown he can
contribute.
Bertrand hopes improved depth can
help Saugus turn close matches into
victories after the Sachems frequently
battled opponents deep into matches
last season.
“If we can flip some ties into wins or
a couple hole losses into ties, Bertrand
said, “we might be able to sneak up on
some teams that have gotten the better
of us in the past.
More than anything, Bertrand wants
his younger players to learn from an
experienced group that understands
how the game should be played.
“We have three great captains that
do a great job of setting a good example,
Bertrand said. “If anything, I hope
the younger guys see that and strive
to be like them.

Saugus welcomes a new VSO
Retired Army Colonel Joseph R. Connell, with 30 years of active duty, takes charge of Saugus Veterans’ Services Office
By Mark E. Vogler
Several town officials noted
R
etired U.S. Army Colonel
Joseph R. Connell
began active duty this
week as Saugus’ new full-time
Veterans Service Officer (VSO),
filling an important Town Hall
position which had been vacant
for nearly two months.
Last week’s announcement of
Colonel Connell by Town Manager
Scott C. Crabtree’s Office
drew favorable reviews from
local veterans, town officials
and VSOs from other communities
across the region.
“We had a good meeting and
we spent about an hour together,
Saugus Veterans Council
Commander Stephen L. Castinetti
told The Saugus Advocate
after his visit on Tuesday
(Sept. 1).
“I also took him to Veterans
Park, Riverside Cemetery Veterans
lots and the American Legion.
He seems to be motivated
and ready to get to work. I
think he’ll do well for the Veterans
of Saugus. Looking forward
to working with him, said Castinetti,
a retired U.S. Navy captain
who has been active in the
town’s veterans activities for
many years.
on The Advocate Newspapers
Facebook page that they had
high expectations for Connell,
who retired as a colonel following
30 years of active-duty
distinguished service in the
United States Army. “Welcome
to Saugus. We are fortunate to
have you, Selectman Jeff Cicolini
wrote in a post accompanied
with an American flag.
Board of Selectmen Chair
Debra Panetta posted, “This is
great news for Saugus.
“His qualifications are very
impressive, Panetta said after
Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen’s
meeting.
“I haven’t met him yet, but I
am looking forward to it. His
first day was Monday [yesterday],
and I was away in NH, and
came home today for my meeting,
she said.
Former Selectman Corinne
Riley, who is actively involved
in veterans events in the community,
said she is looking forward
to meeting Connell. “His
service and experience is very
impressive, she said.
Former Saugus VSO Jay Pinette
also welcomed Connell.

how critical the position is, PinJ&

Connell fills the vacancy left
by former Saugus VSO SueAnn
Cheung, who resigned in early
July after a little more than nine
months on the job to become
director of the Brookline Veterans’
Services Office. Cheung,
a U.S. Marine Corps veteran,
made Saugus history last Sept.
26 when Town Manager Scott
C. Crabtree announced he had
hired her to become the town’s
first full-time VSO.
The press release issued by
the Town Manager’s Office last
Friday emphasized that the
new VSO “brings an exceptional
combination of military command
experience, executive
leadership, municipal government
service and community
involvement to Saugus.
“Joe Connell has devoted his
life to service and leadership,
and we are extremely fortunate
to have someone with his
experience and commitment
joining the Town of Saugus,

Connell achieved the rank of
Colonel during a 30-year active-duty
Army career that included
senior command and
leadership assignments in
the United States, Iraq and Afghanistan,
according to the
press release. He commanded
approximately 500 soldiers
with the 2nd Battalion, 11th
Field Artillery Regiment during
a 15-month deployment to
northern Iraq in support of Operation
Iraqi Freedom, where
his battalion conducted combat
and stability operations.
Connell later served with the
101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan
and subsequently
became Chief of Staff for the
Commander of United States
Forces–Afghanistan, helping
lead and coordinate a complex
multinational and interagency
headquarters during a significant
period of U.S. operations
in Afghanistan. From 2010 until
his retirement in 2014, Connell
served as Senior Army Advisor
to the Adjutant General
of the Massachusetts National

on organization, personnel,
training, operations, logistics,
mobilization planning and

numerous other awards and
honors. Connell also served as
a senior trainer at the Army’s
Joint Readiness Training Center,
where he trained, coached
and mentored battalion commanders
and units preparing
for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan.
As
Veterans’ Service Officer,
Connell will lead the Town’s efforts
to support Saugus veterans
and their families and help
ensure they receive the benefits,
services and assistance
they have earned. His responsibilities
will include administering
benefits under Massachusetts
General Laws Chapter
115, assisting veterans with
state and federal benefits and
claims, connecting veterans
and their families with available
programs and resources
and serving as an advocate and
liaison with local, state and federal
agencies.
“Public service did not end
for Joe when his military career
ended, Town Manager Crabtree
said.
“He continued to give back
through local government, veterans
initiatives and community
organizations. That commitment
to service, combined
with his leadership experience
and understanding of government,
will be tremendously
valuable to Saugus veterans
and their families, the town
manager said.
Following his military career,
Connell continued serving
in senior executive and
management positions in the
private sector. His experience
includes serving as Director
of Global Security for Thermo
Fisher Scientific and holding
senior project, operations and
security leadership positions
with Siemens, Stanley Black &

Principal Mike Mondello are
equally enthused about the start
of the new school year, while
also understanding the need to
show results for the town’s commitment
to an improved education
system.
As the three principals prepared
for the start of a new
school year, The Saugus Advocate
reached out to them to
share their expectations and to
introduce their new staff.
Saugus Middle-High School
Principal Carla A. Scuzzarella
said she expects the enrollment
in grades 6-12 to be similar
to last year: about 1,300 students.
The principal said there
are 13 new teachers and staff at
the school, but that she expects
to fill a few positions because of
recent resignations.
Principal Scuzzarella said she
is most excited about these
new programs: “We have a new
norm-referenced testing program
going into place which will
allow teachers to collaborate using
common assignments and
assessments, as well as benchmark
assessments to monitor
growth and areas for improvement.
SMHS will have release
time at least 1 Wednesday per
month to allow for teacher collaboration.
We are also very excited
to have a comprehensive
tutoring program being implemented
to support middle and
high school students during the
school day and after school.
The new teachers and staff
include:
• Taylor Bogdanski: MS Special
Education teacher, transfer from
Belmonte, SHS grad.
• Robert Calla: HS Life Skills
Special Education teacher, coming
from the private sector with
a lot of relevant experience, SHS
grad.
• Gurpreet Kaur Gidda: 7th
Grade Mathematics, experienced
teacher coming from
Moulton. Koh received 1,142
votes, about 42 percent of
the votes cast in the race. He
outdistanced his opponents
throughout the district.
Koh, of Andover, worked as
the White House senior aide
to President Joseph Biden. He
also worked as chief of staff
to former U.S. Labor Secretary
Marty Walsh and as his
chief of staff when Walsh
Lynn Public Schools.
•
Rachel Virgin: HS English
Language Learning and English
teacher, experienced teacher
coming from Everett Public
Schools, SHS grad.
• Olra Casey: 6th Grade English,
experienced teacher, longterm
substitute in 6th grade English
last school year.
• Nicole Parziale: HS Special
Education teacher, experienced
teacher coming from Lynnfield,
SHS grad.
•
Brian Dunn: HS Wellness
teacher, experienced teacher
coming from Malden Catholic.
• Kylie Phillips: MS Wellness
teacher, SHS grad.
• Brooke Daley, Special Education
ABA.
• Sydney Imbrescia, Special
Education ABA.
• Melinda Curran, Special Education
paraprofessional, transfer
from VELC.
• Mary Bertocchi, SMHS Nurse.
• Frank Kowalski, SMHS Assistant
Principal (Grades 10 & 12).
Belmonte STEAM Academy
Belmonte STEAM Academy
Principal Christopher Blair said
the recent enrollment in grades
2-5 was 856 students, about 50
more than a year ago. The principal
said there will be 20 new
teachers and staff at the school.
Five of them are filling new positions
(one STEAM teacher, four
general education paras), the
rest replacing staff who have
left Belmonte (departures, retirements,
etc.) or paraprofessionals
who serve students who
are on Individualized Education
Plans (IEPs).
This year’s current staff is 104,
with 32 classroom teachers. Last
year’s total staff was 95. Blair said
most of the new faces belong to
paraprofessionals, and most of
them help students who have
serious to profound disabilities.
He said the school has added
four general education paras to
help teachers and administrators
with support and supervisions
tasks, student instruction
served as mayor of Boston.
Koh currently serves as an
Andover Select Board member.
He will face Republican
candidate Micah Quinney
Jones in November. Jones
was unopposed in this week’s
primary election.
John A. Beccia III finished
second to Koh with 615
votes, followed by Tram T.
Nguyen, 417; Jamie M. Belsiand
other activities.
Principal Blair said he is most
excited about these new programs:
“I’m excited about all of
it, but the area where we’re going
to burn the most calories
will be in the return of our Project
Lead the Way STEAM curriculum,
coupled with our new Belmonte
STEAM Fair. Students will
start thinking about their projects
from Day 1 and then start
planning and working on them
seriously sometime after Jan.
1. They will show their work off
the week of Memorial Day, one
day per grade. Every student will
participate. We’re talking real science,
technology, and so on. I’m
going to want well-planned, rigorous
stuff, without a single papier-macher
volcano in sight. It’s
going to be a lot of work for everybody.
Either the PLTW or the
STEAM Fair separately would be
a lot to handle, but if our school
has ‘STEAM’ in the name, we
need to deliver the goods.
The new teachers and staff
include:
• Amanda O’Brien, assistant
principal
• Quinn Miller, Grade 5 teacher
• Sydney Rosensweig, Grade
to, 236; Bethan Andres-Beck,
164; and Mariah L. Lancaster,

The Sounds of Saugus
By Mark E. Vogler
Good morning, Saugus
It was with great regret that I
wasn’t able to get down to Saugus
last week (Wednesday, Aug.
26) to observe a moving tribute
for the late Saugus Fire Lieutenant
Damian Drella. To me, Lt.
Drella was one of the great ambassadors
of the fire service right
here in Saugus, or anywhere my
travels have taken me during
52 years of newspaper journalism.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t be
there for the funeral, because I
was on deadline, closing out last
Friday’s edition (Aug. 28) of The
Saugus Advocate.
Fortunately, on the previous
Friday, my eyes caught a wonderful
article by Peter Matthews,
editor of Firehouse.com,
about the special tribute that

Ricky Sica, owner of the Medford-based
428 Graphics, had
paid to his friend at the request
of Lt. Drella’s family: a wrap that
would turn Lt. Drella’s casket into
a fire engine. I contacted Peter
and Ricky, seeking permission
to reprint the article along with
a few photos of the casket in last
week’s paper. They agreed.
The response was overwhelming
to the article we posted on
Advocate Newspapers Facebook
page. More than 1,100 people
who read the article posted
that they liked or loved the article.
That was the most favorable
feedback we have had on Advocate
Newspapers for a Saugus
story. Earlier in the month, I received
221 “loves and likes for a
front-page story titled “Sachems
hockey making a comeback.
And I thought that was our alltime
high at the time.
I will forever think of Lt. Drella
anytime I reflect on 9/11. It was
back in 2019, that after a Sept.
11 ceremony at the Central Fire
Station, Lt. Drella took me up on
an invitation for a sit-down interview
over coffee across the
street at Dunkin’ for “The Advocate
Asks question and answer
interview. He talked about
how his life was affected by the
events of Sept. 11, 2001. Lt. Drella
was among the local firefighters
who traveled to New York
City to help in the early days after
two commercial airliners hijacked
by terrorists flew into
the World Trade Center towers,
destroying the landmark of the
city’s financial district and causing
the deaths of 2,763 people.
He had a friend who was one
of 343 New York City firefighters
who died that day. I’ve been
to several 9/11 ceremonies, and
usually Lt. Drella was the guy
who rang the bell. He was also
the guy who would freely offer
some great fire and accident
photos to me or any other reporter
who needed a great photo
to go with a police/fire story.
Damian Drella was an interesting
man who devoted his professional
career and life to Saugus.
He was somebody who touched
many lives in his hometown and
beyond. He was a great guy and
compassionate person who died
way too young.

mark the 25th anniversary of

Monthly Historical Society
meeting
On Wednesday, September 9,
Alison C. Simcox and Douglas
L. Heath will speak about their
latest book “Walls, Rock, and
Rum: Colonial History and the
Founding of Middlesex Fells.
Middlesex Fells is one of the
most storied state parks in the
United States. Home to Indigenous
Peoples for thousands of
years, this land became part of
Charlestown, first capital of the
Massachusetts Bay Colony. Puritans
transformed the landscape,
marked woodlots with stone
walls and gave the largest lots
to wealthy men. They harvested
timber and quarried stones
from the Fells to build homes,
ships and walls and to fuel brickmaking
and rum distilling. Enslaved
labor, acquired through
the transatlantic trade, supported
these markets. Today the Fells
is preserved, but beyond its trails
and wooded vistas lie deeper
stories of Indigenous communities
and colonial transformation.
Alison C. Simcox and Douglas L.
Heath trace this history with new
research published for the first
time. The authors have spoken
to the Historical Society about
their previous books, including
two about Breakheart Reservation,
and have been very popular
with their audiences. They
will have books available for
purchase at the event, and as always
it is open to the public and
there will be light refreshments.
The event will be held at 30 Main
Street at 7 p.m.

THE SAUGUS ADVOCATE – FRiDAy, SEPTEMbER 4, 2026
Savvy Senior
by Jim Miller
Smartphones Made
Simple for Seniors
Dear Savvy Senior,
My 79-year-old mom just upgraded
from a flip phone to a
smartphone, but she’s having trouble
figuring it out. Is there a way to
make it easier for her to use?
--Only Daughter
Dear Only,
Switching from a flip phone
to a smartphone can be a big
adjustment. What seems second
nature to younger users can
feel overwhelming to someone
who’s never used a touchscreen.
Even though the screen is bigger,
the text can still be tiny, the
buttons hard to tap, and one accidental
touch can open an app
or change a setting. Even simple
tasks like texting or taking a picture
can suddenly feel frustrating.
The good news is that smartphones
can be surprisingly senior-friendly.
Both iPhones and
Android phones have built-in
accessibility features that make
them easier to see, hear, and navigate.
The exact steps vary depending
on the phone, but here
are some of the most helpful settings
to look for.
Apple iPhone
If your mom has an Apple iPhone,
start by opening the Settings
app, then tap Display and
Brightness. From there, she can
make the text larger, turn on bold
text, and use Display Zoom to
make icons, buttons, and menus
bigger. Even these small changes
can make the phone much easier
to use.
Accessibility offers several
helpful tools. VoiceOver reads
whatever is on the screen aloud,
Zoom enlarges small text or photos,
and Voice Control lets her
open apps or dictate messages
simply by speaking.
For a simpler home screen, try
Assistive Access. It creates a clean
layout with large buttons and
fewer apps, and you can lock it
with a passcode so it won’t accidentally
switch back. For someone
moving from a flip phone,
this can make using the phone
much less intimidating.
Google Pixel
If your mom uses a Google Pixel,
open Settings, then Display,
and select Display size and text.
She can make words, buttons,
and icons larger and increase color
contrast to make everything
easier to see.
Swipe gestures can be confusing
for first-time smartphone users.
Switching to the traditional
three-button layout brings back
simple on-screen buttons for
Home, Back, and Recent Apps,
making navigation much easier.
In Accessibility, TalkBack can
read text aloud, Magnification
zooms in on parts of the screen,
Live Caption adds subtitles automatically,
Sound Amplifier makes
soft sounds louder, and Voice Access
lets her control the phone by
speaking.
Samsung Galaxy
If she has a Samsung Galaxy
phone, start by turning on Easy
Mode. Open Settings, tap Display,
and turn it on. This enlarges
text and icons, simplifies the
home screen, and adds a slight
delay to reduce accidental taps.
She can also adjust font size,
screen zoom, and switch navigation
from gestures to buttons. Accessibility
settings improve contrast,
offer captions or hearing
aid connections, and let her operate
the phone with voice commands.
Extra
tips
Clean up your mom’s home
screen by removing apps she
doesn’t use and placing her most
used apps – such as Phone, Messages,
and Photos – on the first
screen. Choose a simple wallpaper,
turn up the ringtone and
alert volume, add favorite contacts
for one-touch calling, and
increase the screen timeout so
the display stays on longer.
Remember, the goal isn’t to
master every feature. Start with
the basics – answering calls,
sending texts, and taking photos
– and give her plenty of time
to practice. A little patience goes
a long way. With a few simple adjustments,
her smartphone can
become a tool she actually enjoys
using.

New era, familiar face as Bluestein
takes over Saugus football
By Dom Nicastro
There is a new head coach
calling the shots for Saugus
High football this fall, but
there aren’t any surprises
about Greg Bluestein’s relationship
with the Sachems.
Bluestein grew up in the
program, graduated from
Saugus High in 2008 and
returned to the Sachems’
coaching staff in 2022. Now,
after serving as defensive coordinator
and associate head
coach under former coach
Steve Cummings, Bluestein
takes over a program looking
to build upon some encouraging
signs from the end of
last season.
And his first preseason as
the man in charge has been
a busy one.
Saugus enters the 2026
campaign with roughly 35
players, a new coaching staff
and plenty of work underway
as Bluestein and his assistants
figure out exactly
what kind of team they have.
The team opens up at Cambridge
Rindge & Latin Thursday,
Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
“Numbers are good,
Bluestein said. “30 or 35
kids. You’re always looking
for more obviously, but it’s
not a bad start.
The Sachems
fini shed
2-9 last fall, but the record
didn’t tell the entire story
of how they finished. Saugus
blanked East Boston,
34-0, before nearly pulling
off a Thanksgiving stunner
against Peabody.
The Sachems exploded
to a 20-0 first-quarter lead
against the Tanners and
eventually fell, 28-26. It was a
painful ending but also provided
a glimpse of the young
talent that would be back
for 2026.
Now Bluestein gets the opportunity
to lead that returning
group.
Senior Paxton Ferraro, a
Northeastern Conference
to work with.
One of the most intriguing
returning players is junior
quarterback Eli Fialho.
Fialho received valuable
varsity experience as a sophomore
and showed his playmaking
ability on Thanksgiving.
With Saugus trailing
Peabody in the fourth quarter,
he escaped pressure and
connected with Jordan Rodriguez
for a 65-yard touchdown
that pulled the Sachems
within two points.
This preseason, however,
it isn’t only Fialho’s arm and
legs that have impressed his
new head coach.
SHS Sachems head football
coach Greg Bluestein.
League All-Star last season,
begins the year as Saugus’
captain and will have no
shortage of responsibilities.
Bluestein described Ferraro
as the type of player
coaches can use almost anywhere.
“He’s
a leader by example,
Bluestein said. “He’s doing a
great job of making sure that
the kids are where they need
to be in terms of practice
times and stuff, but also on
the field, getting them lined
up properly and stuff, and
just providing effort everywhere
he goes. He’s a great
kid, coach’s dream. Wish I
had him for another couple
years.
As for where Ferraro will
play?
“Everywhere, Bluestein
said. “He’s gonna be moving
all over the place, offense,
defense. He’s kind of a Swiss
Army knife in that way. He’s
just somebody that you line
him up, and he figures it out.
So we’re lucky to have him.
Ferraro is one member of
a sizable senior class that
gives the first-year head
coach some veteran pieces
“Eli has been like poster
child for leadership this
whole camp, Bluestein said.
“Super, super proud of the
way he’s handled things in
terms of our installation process
and all the stuff that
we’ve been going through.
It’s been a rigorous camp,
but he’s done a really good
job of not just the effort on
his part, but holding everybody
accountable.
Bluestein said Fialho has
been willing to demand the
same commitment from his
teammates.
“He’s been getting on kids
and making sure that they’re
providing the effort that
we need to be successful,
Bluestein said.
Bluestein is also excited
about the speed of senior receiver
Ryan Moreira, whom
the coach believes is ready
for an expanded opportunity.
“Ryan
Moreira is somebody
that stands out in
terms of our receiving corps,
Bluestein said. “Lots of speed.
I’ve been waiting for him to
come on for a while now, so
I’m excited to see what he
can do, now that he’s getting
his chance.
Exactly what the Saugus
offense will look like remains

Bluestein spent the previous
several seasons overseeing
the Saugus defense,
and there are several names
to watch on that side of the
football.

and athlete. He played in the
Saugus Men’s Softball League
into his 40’s, bowled in the Saugus
Men’s League, and was an
avid golfer well into his 80’s.
Bob loved the Celtics and never
missed a game on TV but was
very happy watching any of Boston’s
major sports teams.
In retirement, Bob and Henrietta
enjoyed many happy years
with family and friends, traveling
between Florida and
Saugus, and long road trips
throughout the US. His favorite
times by far was when he was
surrounded by his family. Holidays,
birthdays, and big famiuting
last season, while Ferraro
will be deployed in multiple
spots.
“Dawin should step up at
the middle linebacker spot,
Bluestein said. “He came in
last year and did a great job.
Paxton obviously is going to
be excellent for us in a couple
spots.
There could also be opportunities
for some of the
youngest Sachems.

Bluestein believes some
members of that group could
find their way onto the varsity
field.
Sophomore Isaiah Santiago
is another young linebacker
the Sachems are eager to
develop.
“He has a lot of potential on
him, Bluestein said. “He’s only
a sophomore, somebody that
we were really excited about
last year, and I’m excited to
see him play again this year.
