The days grow shorter, the air begins to cool, and slowly the colors around us begin to change. It is a reminder that God is always at work—sometimes in ways that are easy to see and sometimes quietly beneath the surface. I think that is true in the life of the church, too. This month begins with World Communion Sunday, when Christians around the world gather at Christ’s table. We worship in different languages, in different places, and in different ways, but we are reminded that we belong to one another because we belong to Christ. That feels especially important right now. Church is more than the hour we spend together on Sunday morning. It is the relationships we build, the neighbors we serve, the meals we share, the children we encourage, the prayers we offer, and the ways we show up for one another. As I look around our churches, I see God at work in so many of those ordinary moments. I see it in bags of food packed for children, meals shared around tables, conversations at Bible study, volunteers serving in our schools and community, and people faithfully caring for one another. None of those things happen because of one person. They happen because we are the church together. As we move into this new season, I hope we will continue asking: Where is God at work around us, and how is God inviting us to join in? There is still much ahead of us. There are neighbors we have not met, people who need a place to belong, children who need encouragement, and opportunities to share the love of Christ in tangible ways. May we enter October with open eyes, open hearts, and open hands—ready to see what God is doing and ready to be part of it.
