DROP-OFF/PARKING
REMINDERS
The Clubhouse circular driveway is
a drop-off only area. Under no
circumstances should vehicles be
left unattended. An unattended
vehicle in the driveway makes it
difficult for emergency vehicles to
access the Clubhouse in an
emergency situation, which delays
getting help getting to the person
in need and every second counts.

DRAINS
Residents and lawn

to never place loose
vegetation on top of
storm drains. It can
fall or blow into the
storm drain and clog the stormwater system.
NEW RESIDENT SOCIAL
The next New Resident Social is July 8 at 2 pm in the
HFC. Sign up at either Activities Desk.
USPS/MAILBOX REMINDERS
Recently, staff has received reports of people placing
non-mail items that did not bear U.S. postage in local
mailboxes. Though many may be unaware, it is
important to know that this type of activity is against
federal law. It may seem to be an easy way to "drop
something off," but only U.S. Mail delivered by
authorized personnel may be placed in mailboxes.
Additionally, United States Postal Service Collection
boxes are the property of the Postal Service. You are
not allowed to affix anything to them, including flyers,
signs about missing items or animals, and
advertisements.

LACDD NEWS
By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
Summer is in full swing at Lake Ashton. Residents can
beat the heat and enjoy a groovy Fourth of July
Celebration in the Clubhouse Ballroom at noon on the
4th after LAVA's (Lake Ashton Veteran's Association)
Annual Fourth of July golf cart parade (see page 22).
Let's show how patriotic Lake Ashton really is. There are
lots of fun things to do while spending the summer in
Lake Ashton. Stay tuned to email blasts for even more
fun including food trucks, Sunday Funday events,
karaoke, and more!
On June 20 the LACDD Board of Supervisors met to
give staff direction on next steps regarding the
Restaurant at Lake Ashton. Ashton Tap and Grill's
last day of business was June 30. A Resident Focus
Group was formed to evaluate next steps in the usage
of the current Restaurant space. The group will be
meeting throughout the month of July and the
beginning of August, and will present a report on their
suggestions at the August 15 Board of Supervisors
meeting. The Board also voted to send out a notice to
Lake Wales residents informing them of a not to exceed
assessment increase of $300 for the 2023 Fiscal Year (beginning October 1, 2022). The final amount will
be discussed at the July 18 Board of Supervisors meeting. A summary of other board actions was sent
out via email blast on June 26. The joint meeting originally scheduled for July 15 was moved to August
19 and will be held in the Health and Fitness Center (HFC) Community Center at 11 am.
The Activities Desk enclosure project should be complete by publication. When entering the main
entrance of the Clubhouse residents will have access to Activities Desk staff via openings on the western
Lobby wall. At this location residents can accomplish tasks like they normally did at the Activities Desk in
the Ballroom. This includes guest registration, ticket purchases, ID photos and much more. There will be
an ADA compliant opening available for use and Activities Assistant Caroline will now have an office! We
are excited for this project to be complete and look forward to having a more efficiently run Ballroom
and Activities Office.
Staff is also busy with other projects around the amenities such as pressure washing, painting, organizing
the attic space, rearranging storage areas to be more efficient, replacing umbrellas, and much more.
Staff works hard to ensure the amenities are clean and ready for use by residents. Any residents who
notice an area in need of repair or cleaning at the Clubhouse can complete a resident feedback form
located outside of the Community Director's office or email cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. We wish
everyone a very happy Independence Day. Enjoy time with friends and family and celebrate the
wonderful country we live in...the United States of America!

By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director
The LA II CDD Board of Supervisors met on June 17th. The decision was made to approve the work
on the golf cart flares on Pebble Beach Blvd. and Sawgrass, to repair the driveway of the Golf
Course Pro Shop and repair the golf cart path erosion in back of the HFC. The JaniKing janitorial
services contract was reviewed and approved for another year. Landscaping scope of services will
be discussed at the next Board meeting on July 15th. The Joint Amenity Facilities Policies
Committee draft will be discussed at the next Joint Board meeting in August. Many hours of work
have already been done and will continue to be done on this important project before that time.
This document serves as a guide to residents and becomes a community directors’ reference manual
about just about everything concerning amenities.
The parties, in-services and classes will continue throughout the summer months. The hiatus listing
for summer is down compared to previous years, so most activities are still meeting. Summer is
usually the time for writing new staff in house Policies and Procedures as well as updating the old
ones. There will soon be a convenience for residents at the HFC Activities Desk. We’re getting
credit card readers to expedite sales of event table reservations and can be used at the door on

CLUBHOUSE PET PLAY PARK
UPDATES
Corner
Photo & Article By
Barbara Ann Comer
The Great Blue Heron is the
largest heron in North America. Since it occurs
in all the lower 48 states as well as southeastern
Alaska most new residents can readily identify
them. Despite its size, it is quite graceful on the
wing and always a treat to see in takeoff or
landing. Found at any body of water in Lake
Ashton year round, they have even nested here.
Nests are usually high in a tree and in colonies.
The usual three to five eggs give way to young
birds resembling gawky teenagers. Notorious
for playing with their food before finally sending
it down the hatch, they eat mainly fish, but also
enjoy dining on frogs, turtles, snakes, rodents
and even birds. On a hot Florida day they can
be seen cooling themselves with the undersides
of their wings facing upwards producing an odd
looking pose.
EAST GOLF COURSE BRIDGE
MAINTENANCE UPDATE
Wow, the East Golf Course bridges are looking
brand new again thanks to pressure washing and
sealing the boards. With that being said, there are
a few bridges that were not able to be completed in
the time frame scheduled. The East Golf Course
bridges will be closed to all traffic, including bikes,
golf carts, and pedestrians the week of July 18 in
order to complete this project. This is during a time
that the East Golf Course is closed for
aerification. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE CAUTION
TAPE OR STAKES TO DR I VE ON THE
BRIDGES. When the bridges are complete the tape
and stakes will be removed. Email Matt Fisher,
at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions

after grass seed was planted. The summer rain has
really helped this area flourish quickly. In July, the
eastern portion of the Clubhouse Pet Play Park will
be closed off for turf maintenance. During turf
maintenance the watering schedule will be as
follows:
7-7:15 am
10-10:15 am
1-1:15 pm
3-3:15 pm

HOW FERTI L I ZERS AFFECT
PONDS
During the summer months fertilizers are widely
used in lawns. Excessive amount and careless
application can create problems to nearby ponds.
Fertilizers are primarily made up of phosphorus
and ni trogen and when
introduced to a nearby pond,
they can increase the nutrient
levels. Increase nutrient levels
increase the chances of algae
to bloom. The white specks
pictured are fertilizer granules
that were introduced into one
of the ponds in Lake Ashton.
Please remind lawn care
contractors to use caution
when fertilizing lawns to limit the amount of
product that can potentially makes its way into the
ponds, either directly or indirectly. If you have any
questions or concerns regarding aquatic
maintenance in any ponds located in Lake Wales,
contact Operations Manager Matt Fisher at
mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.

Tips to Protect Your Personal Information
(Courtesy of Consumer Affairs)
Keep your personal items safe. This is a different world from
years ago! We!ve all seen it — a grocery cart with a purse, no
owner in sight! Unattended purses, wallets, cell phones,
shopping bags, etc. are an open invitation to thieves. Whether
inside a shopping cart, hanging on a chair, or while at the
beach or movies is just advertising to the bad guys.
• NEVER leave a purse, wallet or cellphone in a cart when
running to another aisle.
• NEVER turn your back on the cart with your personal items
inside while reaching for items.
• NEVER leave a purse hanging on back of a restaurant or
beach chair.
• ALWAYS keep your purse next to you when at a restaurant.
• ALWAYS keep your wallet in a FRONT pocket if possible.

BEGINS
LIGHTNING SAFETY
All residents who will be spending the
summer months in Florida should prepare for
severe weather. A detailed list of storm tips
can be found at lakeashtoncdd.com under
additional district documents and at the
Clubhouse Information Wall. This is a good
time to ensure trees on your property are
trimmed to avoid potential projectiles during
a storm. Residents noticing areas needing to
be trimmed in conservation areas should
email Matt at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.
Lake Ashton Community Development
District is the only entity that can perform
maintenance in these areas. Please include
your name, phone number, address, and a
small description of the area in question.
Staff will conduct a site visit and determine
what steps need to be taken.
Lake Ashton has a lightning detection system to alert
golfers to get off the course, and notify residents to
go indoors when the potential for a
lightning strike is in the area.
When the system senses a lightning danger,
a high-pitched siren sounds and strobe lights
turn on and stay on until the danger passes.
These strobe lights are at various locations including
on top of the Clubhouse, the backside of the HFC and
at the boat dock on Lake Ashton. A low-pitched horn
will sound the all clear and the strobe lights will turn
off when lightning has passed.
Be safe, and remember that lightning strikes may
occur far away from a visible storm. Get out of pools,
do not stand under trees, and get indoors when the
siren sounds. Please remember that golf carts are not
safe from lightning.

in this film than most Westerns have
ever marshaled. Hired to retrieve a kidnapped
woman from an evil bandito, these pros shoot,
rope and ride all over northern Mexico.

LALGA
By Lydia Fichtman
The LALGA is looking forward to some really
entertaining events in July. July 5 will be a 5-club
game. That’s right, you choose any 5 clubs from
your bag, including your putter, and those are the
clubs with which you will play. There will no doubt
be plenty of laughs. Pick your partner! The
following week is a new tournament “Christmas in
July” held on July 11-12. Find your holiday
decorations and embellish your golf cart. Unearth
those delightful t-shirts that you wear in December
and dress for fun. After the July 11 game there will
be a holiday luncheon at the Nest.
The league is looking forward to a wonderful
summer and with that have given LALGA members
the opportunity to play only 9-holes. On Tuesdays,
during league time, if a member chooses to play 9
holes they may. They will not be charged the $3
fee but will be eligible for birdies and chip-ins (as
long as they have paid their $.25). The player may
also put their score in the GHIN. The sign-up sheet
for 9-holes will be on the LALGA bulletin board.
Just a reminder to always drink plenty of water.
See you on the course.

Cooperative Extension Service as a 4-H Youth
Specialist. It is in Arkansas where she met her
husband Doug. They were married in 1976.
Although they built a house in Benton, Arkansas in
2004, they only lived in it for one year. The year
after they built it, they purchased a motor home
and started traveling the country. They ended up
returning home once a year to check on their home
until they sold it in 2015. While staying at the Deer
Creek RV Resort in Davenport, FL during the past
two winters, they started looking for a permanent
home. They found what they were looking for at
Lake Ashton, purchased a house only 6 weeks ago
and sold the motor home. Bev and Doug's main
hobby is golfing. However, Bev also has a passion
for playing pickleball. Being adventurous, Bev and
Doug have enjoyed many activities in their life
together including scuba diving, backpacking,
kayaking, snow skiing, competitive shooting (trap
and skeet), and off-roading in a Jeep. Both were
competitive water skiers from 1978-1992. Since
moving to Lake Ashton Beverly has also started
bowling again. In Beverly’s own words, “I love the
Lake Ashton Community and the people. Everyone
I have met in the LALGA has been so friendly and
welcoming. I am enjoying getting to know the
ladies and playing some challenging golf.” All of us
are excited to have Beverly as part of the league.
LA NINERS
By Marti Schmidt
Summer continues to heat up, so Pace-of-Play will
be a hot topic! Keep up with the group AHEAD of
you. Ready Golf is always the preferred method of
play. Think about the club/s you will be using next,
so when you put the last club back in your bag,
grab the next one/s. If your ball is directly in front
of the cup, don’t mark it — hole out! Speaking of
heat, remember to keep cold water and/or ice in
your cart when you play. Both are available outside
the Pro Shop. (continued on p. 28)

In June the group played a new game called Toss
or Roll. The main game was a scramble. Each team
substituted a toss or roll instead of ONE stroke
during the 9-hole round. The team all had to agree
when they wanted to use the toss or roll. Each
player tossed or rolled their ball instead of using a
club. Let us know if you liked it or not. After the
game we had our monthly Lunch with Friends. Did
someone really lay on the green and use the end of
their club similar to a pool shot for their “roll”?
The Niners collected items for Polk County Senior
Orphans whose mission is to provide basic
household items for low-income seniors. The
Niners have been involved with this program for a
few years and have helped many seniors
throughout Polk County. Thanks to the generosity
of the LA Niners, our last donation stocked their
shelves for a year with laundry and cleaning
products, so this summer she had some specific
requests for Comet, window cleaner, toilet bowl
cleaner and brushes, sponges, shaving cream and
disposable razors. Thank you, ladies, for your
continued assistance with this charity.

LAMGA
By Paul Fichtman
The second of the LAMGA’s 3 summer tournaments
was the LAMGA Open held on June 22nd. The field
was comprised of two-man teams, which were
assigned based on handicap. The format was 9
holes of Best Ball and 9 holes of Modified Alternate
Shot. The event was followed by a luncheon of
brats, hot dogs, potato & macaroni salad, coleslaw
and watermelon. As always, many thanks to the Pro
Shop and Eagle’s Nest staffs for helping put on this
very successful event.
Each month the sponsors who so generously
support the annual Member-Guest Tournament are
featured. This month the following Remodeling,

Thanks again to Red Hoagland Hyundai for their
continued sponsorship of this very popular annual
contest.
Keeping up the pace of play makes golf more
enjoyable for all our members. Here are five tips
that help speed up the pace of play without having
any negative effect on your game.
• PLAY READY GOLF.
• Always carry a spare ball in your pocket in case a
provisional is necessary.
• Line up your putt before it is your turn, so you are
ready to putt.
• Always record your score at the next tee. Never
record your score at the green.
• Per USGA rules, do not spend more than 3
minutes looking for a lost ball.
The July schedule includes: July 6th – Best Net of
A&D/B&C; July 13th – Pick Your Foursome, 3 Best
Nets; July 20th – Six, Six, Six; July 27th – Beat the
Board, Best 3 Nets.

By Brenda Bush-Sayre
The Lake Ashton Republican Club is holding a
Firecracker Candidate Jamboree at the HFC on
Saturday, July 9th from 4 to 7 pm. Candidates for
the following positions will be participating: U.S.
House Districts 15 & 18; FL Senate District 12; FL
Commissioner of Agriculture; Polk County
Commissioner; and Polk County School Board.
Blackburn’s BBQ is catering the event and tickets
can be purchased at the Clubhouse Activities Desk
for $15 each.
Arrangements are underway for local Judicial
candidates to speak at an upcoming Monday
Morning Coffee. The club extends a huge thank
you to all of the LA residents who joined to view
two showings of Dinesh D‘Souza’s “2,000 Mules”
on June 6. Both showings were sold out so an
encore showing is being planned. Contact: Brenda
Bush-Sayre, (813)313-9911, bbs1954@icloud.com.
LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
Summer is here and snowbirds are gone! A lot of
LA activities are on hiatus, but not LA Rockers,
who continue to meet in the HFC Community
Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm.
If you are here and want to enjoy a lovely
afternoon with a great group of people, try your
hand at rock painting! Newcomers are always
welcome and we will lend you the supplies you will
need for your first meeting. Can't draw or paint -
not a problem. Your efforts are guaranteed to
bring a smile to someone's face (just check the
mirror when you find a hidden rock). Please join on
July 13 and 27. In order to attend, join the
Facebook group "LA Rockers" or contact MJ
Richards (mjmrichards517@gmail.com) or Connie
Strassberg (cbs1949@aol.com). If the meeting has
to be canceled at the last minute, a notice will be
posted on the LA Rockers Facebook group page.
If in doubt, check before you come. Please send
prayers for Alice Mayer's continued recovery.
SINGLES CLUB
By Maureen Ziegler
LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for
single residents. The group meets monthly on the
first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. In June, the group discussed
several outings and get togethers. Plans were
discussed for dinner at Crazy Fish and lunch at
L’Incontro. The group is purchasing gifts for five
senior orphans. The names and lists were
assigned. The gifts are to be brought to the July
meeting. Donations will be used to purchase gift
cards. If you would like to take part in activities
with other singles, attend the meeting on July 3.
LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
LA Swim Club members want to share a secret.
Please only tell your best friends. Swimming is the
best all-around exercise for all ages because it:
• Involves most of your muscles
• Keeps your heart rate up while removing the
impact of running or walking on hard surfaces
• Builds endurance, muscle strength, and
cardiovascular fitness no matter what age
• Helps maintain a healthy weight and healthy
lungs
• Improves flexibility, coordination, balance, &
posture
• Offers low impact exercise which helps the
recovery from many injuries and surgeries
• Is a great way to keep fit & make new friends
So, what are you waiting for? Come swim with us
and improve your fitness level. The swim club has
reserved three workout times each week:
Mondays from 6 to 7 pm, Wednesdays from 1:45
to 2:45 pm, and Saturdays from 10 to 11 am.
Come whenever you can. The volunteer coach
provides a written workout that can be used in
total or as a guide, and he can answer your
swimming technique questions. For more
information, contact sandyw1994@aol.com
