Grateful to meet them, Wendy Beck, who co-owns the Toy Museum with husband Tom, expressed hope and a tentative smile that some degree of normalcy was starting to return. “We’re prayerful,” Beck said. “We think the holiday will make a difference in bringing people out.” Shows, shops, restaurants, resorts and amusements have begun opening their doors to a new season of tourists. They’re posting new public safety and health protocols, adjusting their business to accommodate folks driving to Branson for entertainment, recreation, and much needed relaxation. Tourists have been coming in from as far away as Nevada, South Carolina, Texas and all points in between. Matt Earle, a pastor and former free-weight power lifter, drove 18 hours from Surprise, Ariz., to “catch a break, ” he told the Branson Globe while having lunch at the Branson Diner. “I’ve got family in the area,” he said. “ I drove in as soon as I learned Branson was open for business.” Branson Diner owner Susie Roten said she was glad to see Earle and other customers. “I’m glad we’re starting to get back to normal,” Roten said. “I’d rather people not wear their masks, since they tend to leave them on the table and that requires extra cleanup to be safe bransonglobe.com afterwards. Their children Raegan, 10, nineyear-old McKenzie and Neeson, 6, draped themselves around their parents. Everyone smiled. They were glad to be out of Tulsa. They were glad to be in Branson. “We needed break. The kids needed a break,” Quannah said smiling, looking at his wife and children. They were tired, he said, of being isolated for months of sheltering against the Covid-19 pandemic. So they came to Branson. The Roush family, here for a week, spent most of the morning browsing the Memory Barn of the Toy Museum. Someone a lot wiser than an Ole Seagull said, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” Since our country’s earliest days, America’s Armed Forces, and their families, have paid the price for the privileges and freedoms we all enjoy and sometimes take for granted. Memorial Day offers a unique opportunity to reflect upon that price and honor those who have paid it. The very act of going into the Armed Forces puts one’s life at risk. Immediately upon being “sworn in,” members of the Armed Forces have given control of their lives to their military and governmental leaders. It is a control that is absolute and, from an honor point of view, irrevocable. That control could be exercised in various ways. In combat, it could be through an order “to take that hill,” in the face of withering machine gun or mortar fire, to patrol a neighborhood in Baghdad, or to assault a terrorist stronghold in Afghanistan. Wearing face coverings while in public, maintaining physical distancing, and staying home when sick are all ways to protect yourself and those around you. It is a price paid in separation, stress, blood, suffering, anguish, physical and mental injury, and sometimes death. Theirs is not to judge whether the politicians and powerful are risking their lives in a noble or just cause. Theirs is to do their sworn duty. Some have served in conflicts that were “popular” such as World Wars I and II and Desert Storm. Others in conflicts that were not as “popular,” such as Korea and Vietnam. Through it all, however, the men and women of America’s Armed Forces and their families have done their duty, sacrificed, and given unstintingly of themselves. COVID-19 cases in Taney County continue to hold steady. Barbie, of course, is the famous doll of flowing blonde locks and never-ending smile. The Toy Museum has more than 900 Barbies in its collection. “I like the Star Wars things I saw,” oldest sister Raegan said. “Me, too,” Neeson chimed in. For McKenzie the doll house collection grabbed her attention, especially the teensy real-life champagne glasses and Coca Cola bottles. “Are those chopsticks?” McKenzie asked her dad as she bent down to look further. “Are those shrimp on that plate?” Quannah wondered aloud as he bent down alongside her. For families like the Roushes, the Toy Museum is a chance to make a new memory, that will be especially remarkable because of the strange pandemic situation, according to Wendy Beck, who along wither husband Tom own and operate the Toy Museum. “We’re prayerful to see more folks this year, ,” said Beck, a former high school English teacher and also a writer. “Now that things are open again, we think the Memorial Day holiday will make a difference in getting people to come to Branson.” Those who come to the Toy Museum will have their eyes, ears and arms full of plenty of things from memory lane. For GB Tours and Travel of Branson, that first step will be a June 16 trip to River Bend Casino in Wyandotte, OK. The tour business’ distinctive red motor coaches normally seen along Hwy. 248 will be fired up as it joins the Branson community in gearing up for an unprecedented summer season. But it will be “safety first.” “Like always, our customers are our main concern, and their safety,” said Steve Monroe, GB Tours owner. “We’re very, very strict. We’re going to take temperatures before they get on the bus. We’re going to offer masks if they don’t have one. And we have always sanitized our buses twice a day, and of course that will continue.” Monroe said that currently GB Tours is the only bus that will be allowed at River Bend Casino. The June 16 trip was announced only two days ago and was already 30 percent full. Soon after, GB Tours will resume casino trips three times weekly. The Covid-19 pandemic hit GB Tours hard, as it did most other local businesses. Passenger count dropped by a third, and then March 17 the business closed its doors. Branson AquaPlex will reopen June 2 BRANSON, Mo – The Branson Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce the opening of the Branson AquaPlex on June 2, 2020. The AquaPlex is a 12,250 sq. ft. aquatic park featuring water slides, play structures, a climbing wall, lap lanes and a diving well. The AquaPlex also features a zero depth entry area, allowing easy in-and-out access. The AquaPlex will be open Tuesday through Sunday each week and will offer two daily sessions. This is part of the agency’s continued efforts to return to normal operations in conjunction with Governor Mike Parson’s “Show Me Strong” Recovery Plan. To ensure proper social distancing, park visitors will need to purchase same-day ORV permits online before arriving at the park. Beginning Monday, May 18, daily ORV permits must be purchased online at mostateparks. com. Permits can be purchased for same-day use only. The capacity of ORV permits sold will be limited to allow space for proper social distancing in the riding area and the staging area parking lot. For the riders’ convenience, the required 6-foot staffed orange flags will be available for purchase by credit or debit card only at the park office. All visitors must remain diligent and come prepared to enjoy the outdoors responsibly by following the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: • Keep a minimum distance of 6 feet between you and others. • Avoid crowded areas and groups of people. • Stay close-to-home and travel with only those from your household. • Wash your hands often. • Come prepared and carry hand sanitizers, soaps, wipes and water. • Avoid handshakes, hugs and touching your face. • Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow when you cough or sneeze. • Be kind and considerate of others. • Stay home if you are sick. The world-class conservation attraction is implementing a number of new standard operating procedures based on best practices from aquarium industry leaders and public health officials in compliance with city guidelines.
