By C h r i s t i n e We l l s , LA ( LW) CDD Commu ni ty Di r e c t or
Believe it or not, the first day of Fall is September 22. Even though Lake Ashton residents will not
experience the traditional cooler temperatures and leaves changing colors, this does mark a time when
friends traveling and visiting family and friends in other parts of the country return home. Welcome your
friends and neighbors back to the community by coming out to a Sunday Funday dinner and
entertainment at Ashton Tap & Grill, going to an event at the Clubhouse or HFC, or maybe play a round
of golf and enjoy a lunch at the Eagle's Nest afterwards. Whatever you choose to do, Lake Ashton is full
of opportunities for socializing with friends and neighbors to nurture current relationships and create
new friendships.
Lake Ashton's Rock the Block event is a great time to lay back and enjoy a carefree, no frills, good oldfashioned
block party without the heat or possibility of rain. This event is free and all new residents of
Lake Ashton are encouraged to come out and meet the neighbors! Please see page 23 for more
information on this event. Oktoberfest is September 29 and what a way to bring in the month of
October. There will be a live authentic German performance, food, and lots of beer! Stop by the
Activities Desk to get tickets to both of these great events and start the fall off with a bang.
At the August 16 Board of Supervisors meeting the budget for fiscal year 2022 was approved with minor
changes. The Board also voted to increase the Operations and Maintenance assessment for Lake Wales
residents to $1969 (a $94 increase). The Board of
Supervisors directed staff to implement signage
recommending everyone to wear masks when in the
Clubhouse. This signage is now in place and it is
recommended to maintain six feet social distancing to
keep your neighbors safe. Hands free soap dispensers
and faucets are now available in all restrooms and
additional hand sanitizing dispensers have been added
throughout the Clubhouse. Please see page 16 for more
information on how we are working to keep Lake Ashton
residents safe. A wrap up report was sent via email blast
on August 19 with a summary of actions taken at this
meeting. Any resident that did not receive this wrap up
report can request a copy by sending an email to
cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com. The next Board of
Supervisors meeting is Monday, September 20 at 9:30 in
the Clubhouse Ballroom. Please visit lakeashtoncdd.com
for agenda packets, meeting minutes and other District
documents, or to sign up for blast emails.

The temperatures outside recently are sizzling, but there’s plenty of cool activities available inside at
the Health and Fitness Center (HFC). Walking inside in the Community Center is a great option as are
the various indoor gaming opportunities. Corn hole sets, billiards, our new pool/golf game, ping
pong, basketball, racquetball, and our multiple Wii games are awaiting your use in the comfort of air
conditioning. The indoor swimming pool will also keep off the damaging rays of sun, so you can swim
for longer periods of time without your skin burning or becoming leathery and wrinkled. For those of
you who visit our Fitness Center, check out the new recumbent bike. New massage room
conveniences have been added as well.
COVID updates…you’ll see our Wearing is Caring posters around the HFC and staff will always have a
mask with them, so ask them to put one on while you interact if you wish…they will likely ask if you
want them to put it on first though! Daily information comes into my office from the CDC and other
medical resources, and our Chairman of the Board keeps very well informed as one of the Public
Safety resources, so know that your safety will always be foremost in our priorities. You will always be
kept abreast on best practices. Please see page 16 for more information on how we are working to
keep Lake Ashton residents safe.

The HFC is home to a new recumbent bicycle in
the Fitness Center. Stop in and try it out! We
also have a cost free (to LA II CDD) vending
machine in house again. It’s located in the hall
outside the fitness room and it’s getting good
usage there. It takes cash or cards.
Our new landscaping teams are Fox Hollow
(flower beds) and Prince and Sons (mowing, etc.)
They are already making needed improvements
for the HFC grounds and Ashton Boulevard.
Supervisor McKie has worked many hours getting
this transition in place seamlessly.
The LA II Board will not be having a meeting in
September, so their next meeting is October
15th at 9 AM in the Community Center. The final
budget for FY 2022 will be voted on at that time.
Our Board members have office hours weekly
where you can meet one to one with them. Their
dedication to serving the Lake Ashton
Community is amazing. The next LA Connection
will be off the press on September 22nd at the
HFC.

JOINT AMENITY FACI L ITIES
POLICY HIGHLIGHT
Corner
by
Barbara Ann Comer
The Roseate Spoonbill is a really
flashy bird that can be found at Lake Ashton
most frequently in the summer after breeding
birds have dispersed. These large pink wading
birds are often mistakenly identified as
flamingos. The only expected pink bird at Lake
Ashton (and in most of Florida) is the Roseate
Spoonbill. It can vary quite a bit in color from
pale pink to hot pink! Unlike flamingos the
color of the Spoonbill has nothing to do with
diet and everything to do with age. Males and
females are identical in plumage and females
are just as bright as the males as they age. The
Spoonbill is named for its bill with a flattened,
spoon-shaped tip. They swing their bills from
side to side in shallow water while feeding on
small fish, crustaceans and insects. They fly
with their legs and necks outstretched. Places
to see them at Lake Ashton include any body
of water, but they seem to especially favor the
stream beyond the driving range near the
beginning of the West Course.
Each month an excerpt from the Joint Amenity
Facilities Policy will be featured in the LA Times. This
month outlines the policy regarding interacting with
wildlife at Lake Ashton. The full Joint Amenity
Facilities Policy can be found online at

By Carolyn Bishop
To say the school was overwhelmed with Lake Ashton’s generosity would be an understatement.
Each carload of supplies was met with huge smiles and looks of astonishment. The Lake Ashton
contributions quickly filled up the stage area in the cafeteria. As the students arrived for the first day of
school, they were given a backpack full of all the necessary supplies to help them have a successful
year. Each teacher also received a $20 gift card to help with their classroom needs. If you have any free
time and would like to volunteer at the school please contact them. The need is great for these
students. Thank you again for the support,
Carolyn Bishop, Lisa Fee & Lynn Lasseter
Lake Ashton Community,,
We are truly grateful for the generous contributions that
have been made to support the students at Wahneta
Elementary School. Due to the current situation with the
pandemic the needs we are seeing have been extreme. The
book bags, notebooks, binders, etc., were a pleasant surprise,
The look on the students’ faces when they were presented
with their school supplies was priceless. Thank you again for
your support!
Sincerely,
Nildalis Caraballo, Principal

reach elevations of 7-8,000 feet. Less oxygen in
each breath makes the climbs more difficult.
SPOTLIGHT: LAKE ASHTON
CYCL I STS GO TOURING
Two Lake Ashton bicycle riders will leave on cycling
tours during the month of September. Calvin
Eakins (above left) will be touring the state of
Texas on a two-week, 850-mile adventure, while
Bob LeMaster (above right) will be taking a 3,000+
mile adventure from San Diego, CA to St
Augustine, FL. Average mileage on both trips will
be approximately 70 miles per day. Both riders are
preparing for this high daily mileage by logging
between 50 and 70 miles five to six days a week.
Calvin has been riding for ten years and brings a
lot of experience to their efforts. According to
Bob, Calvin knows all of the local roads and
popular routes which has been a tremendous help.
Bob is relatively new to cycling, having started
riding when he moved to Lake Ashton two years
ago. Calvin and Bob met when their paths crossed
while cycling one morning and have been riding
together since that chance encounter.
One of the biggest challenges encountered during
training this time of year is the heat. They start at 6
am most mornings so they can be finished before
the temperature and humidity become too much.
A 70-mile ride takes roughly five hours and it is
very hot at the finish even with an early start. Both
tours will have days of high temperatures, so
adapting to the heat is a training goal. They must
train like an endurance athlete to stay hydrated
and have enough energy to finish the rides.
Another challenge to training for long tours is the
lack of mountains or long hills in Central Florida, as
13
13
Bob’s trip is hosted by a tour company, TransAmerica
Cycling, that provides Support and Gear
(SAG) during the trip and has taken care of all of
the planning and logistics. The tour route leaves
California September 27 and passes through
Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama, and will end in Florida on November 12.
Calvin’s tour is hosted by the Texas Conference of
the Seventh Day Adventist Church. It is called the
“Determined Cycling Tour” and is a fundraiser to
support K-12 Christian education. The tour starts
September 12 at the southern tip of Texas in
McAllen, passes through Corpus Christi, Houston,
Austin, and finishes in Dallas September 24. You
can follow the Determined Cycling Tour at
texasadventist.org/determined/ for photos,
videos, and interviews. Good luck to both of these
determined Lake Ashton residents!

Your Homeowners Association
Board of Directors (BOD) continues
to carry out the mandates of the
CC&Rs the best it can with the
help of the management company,
Don Asher & Associates, Inc. The HOA manager has
changed and Michellette Ramos will be the new
HOA manager. Michellette visits several times a
week, meeting with board directors, answering
questions from residents, continuing property
inspections for estoppels and violations. Michellette
is an “arm” of the BOD, acting on behalf of the
board’s wishes and not an independent lone
authority. Her goal is to please the residents by
following our rules to help the residents follow our
governing documents. In September, Michellette will
be concentrating on clean driveways for property
violations. Please look at your property and ask
yourself, “Would my property cut the mustard?”
Don’t forget about the curbs.

WATCH ALERT
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Courtesy of Law Enforcement
Scammers will call an Amazon, Apple,
or other major name customer and
tell them that there is a problem with
their account, such as a suspicious
purchase, lost package or unfulfilled
order, according to the Federal Trade
Commission. These customers could
be told that their account has been
breached. The scammer will then
instruct the victim to press 1, or any
other number, to speak wi th
customer support. Other things they
might say is to call another number,
or ask you to provide them with your
personal information. Law Officials
advise not to do anything. Hang up.
Do not visit a web address either that
the caller might give you. Report
these types of scams to the Federal

7 DAYS IN SEPTEMBER
2004 | NR | 1h 34min
Composed of material from 27
filmmakers -- ranging from professional
directors and cinematographers to
amateurs on the street -- this documentary examines
the immediate impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in
New York City. This powerful footage documents the
atmosphere surrounding the city in the hours and

McCloud (Humphrey Bogart), warwidow
Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall) and her invalid
father-in-law face a worse storm inside the Temples'
tumbledown Florida hotel in Key Largo. Frank
merely stopped by to pay his respects to Nora, only
to find the hotel commandeered by exiled gangster
Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson). Will the warweary
Frank step up to fight again

Burt Lancaster stars as the titular
backstroker in this adaptation of John
Cheever's short story about one man's
attempt to find meaning in his life. Ned Merrill
(Lancaster) wakes up in a haze, confronted (and
confounded) by the sterility of his wealthy suburban
Connecticut existence. So, he decides to "swim"
back to his house via every neighbor's pool along
the route. Along the way, memories are evoked, and
the "American Dream" is indicted.

PRO SHOP
By Ron LaVoie, General Manager
SUMMER HOURS
THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30
Golf Pro Shop:
7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
Driving Range:
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
(Select Thursdays range will be
closed until 8 a.m. for maintenance)
still playing the first four holes of the East. Last year
those holes were closed starting August 10th and
did not reopen until November 1, so let’s hope we
can get through September and October with all 36
holes. Golf course maintenance is doing a good job
with both courses as we try to control weeds and
keep up with mowing while being down three
people. The order of importance for maintenance is
greens, fairways, tees, roughs and bunkers. We are
currently putting together a five-year capital
improvement program for the golf courses to
include moving irrigation boxes, moving the main
line out of the water on 3 East, replenishing
bunkers, refurbishing rest rooms, new mowers, new
irrigation heads in wet areas, drainage of wet areas,
rebuilding and leveling tees. Of course, all of this
must fit within the budgets so planning will be key
to success.
Membership sales are underway, and people are
signing up at a faster rate then the previous nonCovid
year fiscal year. The club is $144,374 ahead of
2019 – 2020! With all the new home sales it is going
to be a very busy season this Fall and Winter. This
past year the club sold 390 memberships which
translated into 609 members. It is possible this
number could rise to 650 once the build out is
complete by late spring or early summer. So far, the
rainy season has been good to us because we are
Vickie and her people are making a great effort
trying to service the food and beverage needs of
the community while only having a staff of four
people. Eagle’s Nest appreciates the patience
everyone has shown as some days there is only one
person available, and on shotgun days there are
only two. This pandemic is far from over, but
hopefully we will have more applicants after
September 1st. The Golf Committee members are
Rolly Geyer, Mary Lopez, Vickie Andrew, and Bill
Bothwell. If you would like anything discussed at
one of the meetings, please reach out to one of
them, or let Matt or myself know what your
concerns might be. Those non-golfers who would
like to receive notifications on course conditions and
closures should add your name to the email list by
contacting the Pro Shop at 863-326-1032.

The fall calendar is out and opening day is set for
Tuesday, November 16! Mark your calendars! But
if you are a snowbird, you don’t want to miss out
on the first tournament of the season. Come back
early and participate in The Pink Ribbon Breast
Cancer Golf Tournament set for November 9 at 9
am. Once again, both courses will be in play and
again, a Hole-in-One could win you a brand new
car! Also, a pre-tournament cocktail party is
planned for Saturday evening, November 6 at the
Eagle’s Nest from 4 to 6 pm, with music, hors
d’oeuvres and of course, adult beverages. The
committee is looking for sponsors and donors.
Please contact Kim Kutsch at jkkutsch@gmail.com
or Lydia Fichtman at Lydia.fichtman@gmail.com if
you would like to be a sponsor or have anything
you would like to donate as a raffle or silent
auction item. Last year, the tournament donated
over $25,000 to the Watson Clinic Foundation and
is hoping to match that this year. But it can’t be
done alone — your help is needed! Please consider
sponsoring the event in some way to help
eradicate this disease.
Meet Dawn Neigh
Dawn moved to Lake Ashton five
years ago. Or iginal ly f rom
Michigan, Dawn is a retired 3rd
grade teacher. She met her
husband of 46 years, Ken, at a
movie theater. They hit it off and
were married. They have two daughters. Dawn
loves riding motorcycles and rode a Honda 1300
wearing leather pants, a helmet, etc. She and Ken
have ridden from Michigan to Mt. Rushmore and
Michigan to Nova Scotia. She absolutely loves
riding but sold her motorcycle when she moved to
Florida — too afraid of the way the Floridians
drove on the roads! Dawn was totally done with
snow and upon moving to Florida she and Ken first
rented for a year in Cypress Woods. They then
drove in to Lake Ashton and in 2015 moved to
Hogan Lane. They fell in love with the community.
Dawn has been playing golf “forever” and first
joined the golf association during the summer
session to see if she liked it. She then joined the
Niners and then recently the LALGA. She finds the
ladies of the LALGA “fantastic!” You may hear
Dawn up on the tee box. She likes to say out loud
“Swing through, drive.” This reminds her to follow
through with her drive. Welcome Dawn! The
LALGA is delighted you decided to join.
