By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
Supervisors and Staff would like to welcome seasonal residents back to Lake Ashton and wish
everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah. November is a great time to reflect on
everything to be thankful for, including beautiful sunny skies and living in a community full of caring
friends and neighbors. Don't forget to stop by the Clubhouse Foyer to add what you are thankful for
to our "Thankful Board". In this edition of the LA Times, residents will find many opportunities to
celebrate the upcoming holidays and give back to the communities surrounding Lake Ashton.
Residents will also note that many clubs are resuming monthly meetings. Stop by the Activities Desk to
get more info on how to join some of the clubs advertised. Soon Lake Ashton will sparkle with exterior
lights and holiday decorations to get everyone in the spirit of the holidays. This is truly the most
wonderful time of year … enjoy it!
Supervisors met on October 18 and approved several projects that will increase accessibility at the
Clubhouse. A permanent pool lift was approved in addition to the installation of a handicap railing at
the west entrance to the Clubhouse. A wrap up report of all board actions was sent out on October
22. Please reach out to Christine Wells at cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com with any questions. The next
Board of Supervisors Meeting is on November 15, 2021 at 9:30 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom.
A Joint CDD Meeting was also held on October 18. LACDD and LAIICDD are working together on
revising the Joint Amenity Policies. Residents should
reach out to the Supervisors designated to work on this
project, LACDD Supervisor Realmuto or LAIICDD
Supervisor Littlewood, with any suggested changes to
the policies. The Boards also set a public hearing for
January 21 (the next Joint Meeting) at 11 am at the
HFC to review the non-resident user fee. All residents
are encouraged to attend.

Many projects are being completed as approved by the
Board at the last meeting. New wood flooring is going
to be considered for the Racquetball Court, already
approved are the Pickleball fence rail, hole # 6
bathroom is being redone with a cart path connecting
the golf course with Pebble Beach Blvd., a new exercise
bike is being added to the Fitness Center, and a cover
will be placed over the pool equipment to save on
repairs from damaging rays of the sun. Ashton Drive will
be getting a bit of “a landscape facelift” soon as well.
The month started off with a very well-attended
Cornhole Tournament. Our sponsors helped make the
event a huge success and, as a result, league play will
be beginning, and two more double elimination
tournaments will be held at the HFC. One will be the
Holiday Classic in December, and another March
Maddness (no spelling error). We’re looking forward to
getting two additional wooden cornhole sets as soon as
they are completed.
We had a very successful October Breast Cancer
Awareness month. The Walkathon alone netted a total
of $400 being sent to the Breast Foundation of Central
Florida. The community of Lake Ashton is always so
generous to those in need.
Tim Taff, who is also a resident, is teaching the Handbuilding Clay Classes. He’s very
experienced and welcomes new people to the class on Wednesdays. For more
information, call the Activities Desk at 863-595-1562. There is no charge for the classes,

November is a traditional time for residents to host
family and friends. Remember, when you see a
visiting grandchild, they are guests of your neighbors
so please extend every courtesy possible.
Residents: please be tolerant of extra activity at the
pool and other Clubhouse amenities. Those hosting
family should remind them to be considerate of
residents in this 55 and older community. It is helpful
if a resident accompanies their guests at any of the
amenities, but is not required.
Anyone using amenities at the Clubhouse or HFC
should have a Lake Ashton Resident ID Card or
Facilities Guest Pass. Register guests at either
Activities Desk during business hours. Residents must
bring at least one adult guest to sign the form.
Renters must have a copy of their rental agreement.
CARING TREE
By Larry & Joanne Hillock
The Lake Wales Care Center Caring Tree benefiting
the children of local families in need will be set up in
the Clubhouse Ballroom in mid-November (the exact
date will be announced via email blast). Feel free to
take a gift suggestion tag from the tree and purchase
an item. If you wish to purchase a different item, feel
free to find something appropriate for the age/
gender on the tag. Bring the new and unwrapped
item and place it under the tree. If you want to
donate a gift card, please leave it with someone at
the Activities Desk. Suggestions include such items as
action figures, board/card games, books, coloring
book/crayons, educational toys, electronic games,
fishing poles/equipment, teen bath/hygiene sets,
throw blankets or pajamas. Any item you feel
someone aged infant through teen would enjoy
would be greatly appreciated. The gifts will be
collected and delivered to the Care Center Christmas
distribution center. Please bring your gifts no later
than December 17.
If your club or activity would like to donate as a
group, please contact the Hillocks directly. Lake
Ashton has supported this worthwhile event for over
10 years and the need grows every year. With the
effects of the pandemic they are expecting an even
greater need in the community. Thank you for your
support!

The limpkin is a large
chocolate-brown wading bird
heavily streaked with white.
Most newcomers to Lake Ashton are alarmed
when they hear wild wails in the middle of the
night. This mostly solitary and usually quiet
unassuming bird can awaken the marsh with
its racket. The limpkin's range in the United
States is mainly in Florida and many believe it
should be the state bird rather than the
Northern Mockingbird. Limpkins can be found
at Lake Ashton in the retention ponds
searching for snails, frogs and insects. Their
preferred food is the apple snail and it's
always fun to find the leftover shells with holes
in them from the surgery performed by the
limpkin. It's a real treat to see limpkins with a
line of downy young babies trailing behind
their look-alike parents.
JOINT AMENITY FACI L ITIES
POLICY HIGHLIGHT
Each month an excerpt from the Joint Amenity
Facilities Policy will be featured in the LA Times. This
month outlines the policy regarding reserving
facilities at the Clubhouse and HFC. The full Joint
Amenity Facilities Policy can be found online at
lakeashtoncdd.com or lakeashton2cdd.com under
"Additional District Documents". Any questions
regarding these policies can be directed to Christine
Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
(cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com) or Mary Bosman, LA II
(WH) CDD Community Dir ector
(mbosman@lakeashton2cdd.com).
VII. RESERVING FACILITIES
Amenity Facilities are available on a first-come, firstserved
basis, and subject to applicable fees or rates
as set by the appropriate District. Requests to
reserve facilities should be submitted through the
Staff at the appropriate Amenity Facility.
Reservations are available for up to three (3) hour
increments for all facilities listed in the reservation
policy, with the exception of the Ballroom and HFC.
These can be reserved for periods up to five (5)
hours. Longer time increments may be approved by
the Amenity Manager. There are no personal
“standing” weekly reservations allowed for the
Amenity Facilities listed in the reservation policies.
Clubs and organizations may make “standing”
reservations. These will be reviewed semi-annually
by the Amenity Manager. The Amenity Manager can
reschedule any reservation if requested by a District.
The Clubhouse or HFC must be notified if a
scheduled reservation cannot be kept so the slot
may be re-assigned. Reservations will be held for 15
minutes past your scheduled start time before
reassigning the reservation time slot.

LA ( LW) HOA
CORNER
By Keith Stevens
Thanks to all the Lake Wales
HOA members who so
promptly responded to the HOA reminders that
driveways should be kept free of stains, weeds and
mold. Many driveways were cleaned almost
immediately after owners received a courtesy
reminder that their driveway needed some
attention. Many other driveways will be cleaned in
the coming days as owners return to Lake Ashton.
The new management company will have a monthly
focus for compliance as well as keeping an eye out
for any situation that might not comply with the
community Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions.
For November the focus will be landscaping. Take a
look at your landscaping to confirm that your mulch
is adequate and consistent, your beds are free of
weeds and the edging is of the approved material.
The HOA is seeking to remind owners of the need
to comply with the CC&Rs and at the same time be
reasonable in giving owners time to correct noncomplying
issues. The HOA would prefer not to
issue formal “notices of violation”. Those notices can
lead to additional costs and inconvenience.
Hopefully, a courtesy reminder of a needed
correction that may have overlooked will eliminate
any need for a formal “notice of violation”.
In attempting to send those courtesy reminders, it
was discovered that many of you have not told the
HOA of new email addresses and sometimes new
mailing addresses. So, the HOA has created an
opportunity for you to let them know of your
communication changes. Next to the HOA mailbox
in the Clubhouse Ballroom on the wall along with
club and community information, the HOA has
provided a “profile update” form. It should make it
easy for you to inform the HOA of a new email
address or other new or different profile
information. If you have some new profile
information to share, please pick up a form, fill it out
and drop it in the HOA mailbox in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. Your email address, particularly, makes it
quick and easy for the HOA to send you important
information. Emailing also saves the HOA and,
ultimately you, money.
SUBMITTING ARC
REQUESTS ( LW RESIDENTS)
By Iris Realmuto, LW ARC Chair
All external changes you make to your home require
an ARC request and approval prior to starting any
project. To submit an ARC request, go to
lakeashtonhoa.org, and download the form which
can be found under the Documents tab in the
Architectural Information section. You can complete
the form by hand or on your computer. Then email
the completed form to admin@lakeashtonhoa.org.
DO NOT USE THE ‘SUBMIT NEW REQUEST’
feature on the website.
The form can also be found on the information wall
in Clubhouse Ballroom. You can either drop the
completed form in the HOA box or have it scanned
at the Clubhouse Office prior to dropping it in the
HOA box. The deadline for complete ARC request
submissions is 5 pm on Wednesday prior to the next
ARC meeting. The ARC meets the second & fourth
Wednesday of the month. You will be notified of the
status of your request within a few days of the
meeting.

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
The days are shorter with darker mornings and
evenings, so those out walking should consider
pedestrian safety and think about how to be as
safe as possible on Lake Ashton roads. Residents
are all pedestrians at some point during the day,
whether walking through a parking lot or walking
for exercise. By employing a few simple strategies,
walkers can stay as safe as possible and avoid a
potentially tragic accident. Don’t miss the
Pedestrian & Parking Safety Presentation with
LWPD at Monday Coffee on November 8 at 9 am.
All vehicles, including
golf carts, must obey
all stop signs and the
20 mph speed limit
throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, watch
for pedestrians at all
times. Obeying posted
speed limit and traffic
signs can help avert a
potential tragedy.
SMOKE ALARM FACTS
By James Schuppe, LA CERT Member
Do you know if your smoke alarms work? Have you
tested the alarms? Have you changed the batteries
(if required) every six months? Daylight Saving
Time is a good time to remember to check. Have
you purchased and installed new alarms after the
10 year maximum life expectancy? Have you
cleaned them by vacuuming? Dust can cause
improper smoke detection if left to accumulate,
causing malfunctions. Did you know there are
special smoke alarms for the hearing impaired that
can notify of smoke/fire by using a visual strobe
light or vibration? These simple things can prevent
a tragic loss if your home catches fire by giving you
advance warning to get out.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
What To Watch For If You Suspect A Crime
Sometimes what a witness or victim sees and
remembers can be crucial in helping law
enforcement solve the crime. When you call 9-1-1,
you will be asked various questions. If you saw
someone commit a crime, do you think you could
accurately describe what they looked like or the
vehicle they were driving?
Important description information
i n c l u d e s g e n d e r, e t h n i c i t y,
approximate age, height, weight,
build, hair style and color, eye color,
facial hair, jewelry, tattoos, glasses,
or anything else that would assist in
identifying the person. Also note
type and colors of clothing — any
hat, shirt, jacket, pants, shorts, dress,
belt, and shoes? Can you describe a
vehicle with license plate and/or
numbers , bumper st ickers or
damage, colors, year (or year range),
or people in vehicle? Jotting this
information down ASAP (in your
phone or on paper) will help refresh
your memory as needed to assist law
enforcement.

By Mike Weissberg
Please review the following information regarding the rules of the road as they pertain to bicycles. A
bicycle is a vehicle and the rider is considered a vehicle driver. Car drivers often try to pass a bicycle at
unsafe distances, at unsafe times.
The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left
thereof at a safe distance and shall not again drive to the right side of the roadway until safely clear of
the overtaken vehicle. A driver overtaking a bicycle must maintain a horizontal clearance of at least 3 feet
[§316.083]. Three feet is a minimum “safe distance” for passing a cyclist under typical urban conditions;
when the passing vehicle is large,
towing a trailer, or traveling at a
much higher speed, greater lateral
clearance is needed. To pass a cyclist
with safe clearance, it may be
necessary for a motorist to enter (at
least partially) the next lane, when
and where it is safe to do so.
For more information, visit the
Florida Bicycle Association website at
floridabicycle.org/for-motorists/
CAP is always looking for more
volunteers to patrol the streets.
Come help be the eyes, ears, and

for two hours. Applications are

RIBBON BREAST CANCER GOLF
TOURNAMENT
CHILI/SOUP
COOKOFF
By David Harrison
Registration began October 1 in the Pro Shop for
the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Golf Tournament
on November 9. Choose your foursome and sign
up. Don’t have a foursome? Just sign up and
members will be matched. It is only $30 per
person to enter and that includes: the tournament
fee, lunch, prize money and a donation to the
Watson Clinic Foundation. Don’t forget to buy
your raffle tickets as there are over 150 raffle
items. In addition, the silent auction contains
some of the finest golf courses in the area as well
as art, trips, and restaurants. You won’t want to
miss out on placing a bid. Again, anyone in the
community can buy raffles or bid on silent auction
items, even if you do not play golf. Questions?
Call Lydia Fichtman at 215-290-9375 or Kim
Kutsch at 724-664-7988. Let’s make this year’s
donation to the Watson Clinic Foundation even
greater than before! The Kick Off to the Pink
Ribbon Tournament is Saturday, November 6 from
4 to 6 pm at the Eagle’s Nest. It is open to all
Lake Ashton residents. In addition to a DJ, food
and drink, there will be a 50/50 closest to the pin
chipping contest on 18 West. For every $5 you
pay you can chip one ball. The person closest to
the pin will share the pot. There will be a separate
mat for women and men from which to chip.
Clubs will be available if you don’t have any. So
come on out, register early for the tournament,
buy some raffle tickets and enjoy the fun. You
may be the lucky winner!
Grab your dancing shoes and get down to the
HFC on November 7 from 7 to 10. The Rusty
Trumpet Band will be performing and all proceeds
from the dance will benefit the Watson Clinic
Foundation, just like the golf tournament. There
are 27 tables for the dance and each can hold 10
people. Please fill up your table so that we can
donate as much as possible.

Each cup of chili, soup, corn bread, drink &
dessert is 1 ticket and all proceeds benefit the

14 new members this year! (P.S. - it’s never too late

By William Bothwell
The Blue Man Group is one of four
major golf leagues at Lake Ashton.
The league plays Wednesday mornings and welcomes
Lake Ashton golfers of all ages and abilities. Blue Man
Group offers relaxed, friendly organized golf and is
governed within USGA and local rules. Each week
members compete in a variety of individual or team
games crafted to be both competitive and enjoyable.
Golfers in the group tee off from blue tees, hence the
group’s name. Super senior members can opt to tee off
from designated forward tees.
Blue Man Group has NO membership fees and
welcomes Lake Ashton members, week to week. There
is a nominal charge each week to cover a modest prize
pool. Membership in The Blue Man Group gives golfers
access to all Lake Ashton Club sponsored tournaments,
which are flighted and handicapped as well as the very
popular mixed tournament, with the group’s sister
league, The Niners. If you would like to golf in a relaxed,
friendly, competitive group, please consider The Blue
Man Group.

Spotlight on Kathy Ryan
With only two weeks under her
belt this new Lake Ashton
resident was already busy on the
golf course with the LALGA.
Kathy and Jerry Ryan moved to
Lake Ashton from the Kansas
City area. They learned of Lake
Ashton through their next door neighbors in
Kansas City, whose sister Sally and husband Gary
Winfrey live here.
32
Born in Milwaukee, Kathy grew up in Chatham,
New Jersey and attended Colby Jr. College for
Women in New London, New Hampshire. She then
graduated from the University of Iowa with a
degree in French. After a year in Washington D.C.
she moved to Kansas City in 1970 and never
looked back east until now. After a 10-year stint in
real estate she and her then husband decided to
open a pizza restaurant featuring St. Louis style
pizza. It was a happy popular neighborhood place
and little did she realize she would spend the next
34 years working there 24/7. Jerry’s daughter
worked there and introduced the two after Kathy’s
husband had passed away in 1989. In her spare
time she played lots of tennis, biked across Kansas
four times, played bridge, and switched over to
golf as the years went by, active in several leagues.
They hope the i r four ch i ldren and s i x
grandchildren, from Seattle, Wisconsin, Cincinnati
and Ft. Lauderdale visit often and soak up the sun
and the fun here. Please help in welcoming Kathy
to the LALGA!

The Lake Ashton Golf Club has a voluntary Hole-InOne
Club that rewards members for making that
special shot. Each participant pays $2 to join and
that money funds the HIO pot. When a member
makes a hole-in-one, they are awarded the amount
in the pot, issued as a credit to their club account,
so you can celebrate in the Eagles Nest, buy that
new driver or simply have a nice credit. Members
must let the Pro Shop staff know that they want to
be enrolled in the HIO Club — new members are
not automatically included. Snowbirds: if you
withdrew before leaving and are now returning,
let staff know if you want to rejoin. Also, if you
make a hole-in-one, don’t forget to email
valerie@lakeashtoncdd.com with the date, hole
and course number, and picture, to be featured
in the LA Times!

your creations throughout Lake Ashton to bring

LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
Welcome back snowbirds Bobbi & Carol and a HUGE
WELCOME to new members Lisa, Rich, & Debi. It's
exciting to see a pool full of all ages and abilities
wishing to stay in shape, improve swim strokes, or
aiming to participate in one or more of the Florida
Senior (age group) Games. The closest one is in
Lakeland the last of February or the first of March
each year and the plan is to go as team. Someone
said LA has the best little senior games swim team in
Polk Co. Have you heard that sometimes the club has
easy/fun swimming relay races, or an occasional
"Wacky Wednesday,” where members wear wacky
(weird) clothes and do all Wacky swimming during an
entire workout? So, if you can swim and don't like to
swim alone, need motivation to improve your physical
condition, or just want to be part of a fun group,
come check us out on Mon's 6pm, Wed's 1:45pm, or
Sat's 10am. How often you can make it is up to you.
Swim goggles are recommended.
It's also encouraging to see our members
participating in other physical activities. In addition to
some avid golfers & pickleballers, six members were
spotted working hard in the afternoon water exercise
group. Of course, the club thinks swimming is the
best (and safest) all around exercise!

LOOK TO THE SKY
By Carolyn Bishop
The Lake Ashton Travelers
have finally resumed their
Chapter Rallies. Over 20
coaches camped out at the
lovely Creekside RV Resort
in Punta Gorda, Florida
October 14 — 18. This rally
coincided with the Florida
International Air Show that
happened to be right next
door to this RV Resort. The
Air Show Pilots practice
right over the RV Park the
few days before the actual
event. Not only did the
group get an amazing view
of the airplanes but we
could FEEL them all the way to the core! Great
food, games and fellowship was had by all. The
next Rally in November will be to the Cabana Club
RV Resort in nearby Auburndale.
If you would like to know more about the FMCA
Chapter, please join the group in the Clubhouse
Ballroom for the club social held every Tuesday
from 3:30 to 5 pm.
