Sachems hockey
making a comeback
Former veteran hockey coach Jeff Natalucci
will be at the helm of the revived Saugus High
School athletic program
By Mark E. Vogler
S
augus High School once
had its own hockey program,
which established
itself as a perennial powerhouse
that competed for state
and conference titles in the
sport before it was eliminated
several years ago. Matt Serino,
Director of Wellness &
Athletics for the Saugus Middle
High School – himself a
Hall of Fame hockey player
during his days at Saugus
High – has talked about reviving
the sports tradition since
he was hired by Saugus Public
Schools in 2024.
The Annual Town Meeting
provided the seeds for the
comeback this spring when
it approved Article 22, which
provides $215,000 from the
Supplemental Student Support
Reserve Fund for supporting
the Saugus Public
Schools Athletic and Fine Arts
Departments by offering programing,
tutoring and student
study centers for students involved
in athletics, the band
and chorus. The money budgeted
for athletic equipment
includes more than $59,000
for hockey.
Serino gave Sachem hockey
fans more hope recently,
by naming a popular former
Saugus High hockey coach
to lead the revival. “Saugus
High School is excited to announce
the return of Jeff Natalucci,
Class of 1995, as the
Head Coach of the Saugus
High School hockey program,
Serino told The Saugus Advocate
this week.
“This will be Jeff’s second
tenure at the helm of the Sachems.
He previously served
as head coach from 2010–
2022, leading Saugus to four
state tournament appearances,
including one North Final
and two North Semifinal appearances,
Serino said.
“Jeff’s connection to Saugus
and to this hockey program
runs deep. As a Saugus High
School alumni, town employee,
lifelong resident, and parHOCKEY

All of his children have

2024) or are currently going
through the Saugus Public
Schools (Sophia 2027), with
his youngest son, Gio, entering
8th grade and joining the
hockey program this season,
he said.
“Saugus hockey has a proud
tradition that has been carried
on by many great alumni
who have returned to give

will continue that tradition
in his second tenure as head

what Saugus hockey
means to this community. He
understands the history of the
program, the pride that comes
with wearing a Saugus jersey,
and, most importantly, the
core values that the program
was built on.
Serino called Natalucci “the
perfect person to help bring
our hockey program back to

to Saugus extends

him a great fit to lead our student-athletes.
We are excited
to welcome Coach Natalucci
back behind the bench and
look forward to the next chapter
of Saugus hockey.
In June 2024, not long after
the Saugus School Department
decided to expand
the duties of the athletic director’s
job and hire Serino,
several School Committee
members spoke favorably of
bringing hockey back to the
Sachems sports scene. ThenSchool
Committee Chair Vincent
Serino noted that Saugus
High has been a co-op hockey
team with Peabody in recent
years. “We’d like to see Saugus
hockey come back to the way
it was, Serino said.
“Matt has a plan. This is a
good fit. The timing is good. At
the end of the day, it’s a great
fit for Saugus and Saugus athletics,
he said.
Serino starred in hockey
while at Saugus High, leading
the Sachems to the Division 2
state championship in 2004.
He was named to The Boston
Globe and Boston Herald All
Scholastic teams, and in 2018
he was inducted into the Saugus
High Sports Hall of Fame.
His wife, Sabrina Cataldo Serino,
another standout Saugus
High athlete, was also inducted
that year. She was recognized
for her outstanding athleticism
in soccer and indoor
and outdoor track.

been hired to coach the revived hockey program at Saugus
High School. (Courtesy photo to The Saugus Advocate)
Saugus, which is known
as an avid hockey town, was
a high school powerhouse
during Matt Serino’s playing
days and during the years that
his father coached hockey
here. He is the son of the late
Sachems sports legend for
whom the Christie Serino Jr.
Memorial Stadium is named.
Saugus Middle-High School
Principal Carla Scuzzarella is
another huge advocate for
reviving the Sachem hockey
team. “That was a 65-yearplus
program at Saugus High
School that was allowed to
drift away six years ago, Scuzzarella
– who is a Precinct 10
Town Meeting member – told
her colleagues in advocating
on the Town Meeting floor in
support of Article 22, which
provided money for hockey
equipment.
“We now coop with Peabody
and the Saugus students
make up the majority of
that team. So we would like to
have our own program back
again, and to get it started up.
It’s a program for a number of
students.
“I’m trying to keep kids at
Saugus Middle-High School.
It’s a program that will help
keep a number of students
at our school and it’s students
we don’t want to lose,
she said.
Scuzzarella’s son Rob is a
2006 Saugus High School
graduate and a Sachem Hall
of Famer who starred in several
sports, including hockey.
He was a Hockey NEC AllStar,
and one-time hockey
state champ.

Veteran Lynn Public School teacher Amanda O’Brien embraces a new career challenge as

top priority for school Principal
Christopher Blair this summer
as he prepared for his second

find somebody as capable as
Heidi [Jimenez], he said, referring
to his vice principal from
last year, in an interview this
week with The Saugus Advocate.
“Heidi
was grown in the lab
to be an assistant principal, and
I was looking for another one

THE SAUGUS ADVOCATE – FriDAy, AUGUST 21, 2026
The Sounds of Saugus
By Mark E. Vogler
Good morning, Saugus
September is such a busy
month, I think I will need a
secretary to keep track of all
of those important dates that
town residents might want to
know about. Better yet, I will
give our readers 10 days’ notice
on the important ones I
know about.
• For starters, Tuesday, Sept.
1, is the day of the State Primary
Election – which was the
subject of our cover story last
week. In next Friday’s newspaper,
we’ll provide a preview of
the important races and where
people can vote in the town’s
10 precincts.
• It ’s BACK TO SCHOOL
time again for Saugus Public
Schools, like most public
school districts across the
state. Except, Labor Day is
a little later this year, while
school will begin in September.
The first day of classes for
students in grades 6 through
12 is Sept. 2. Classes begin
for kids in grades 1 through 5
with half days on Sept. 2 and
3. Pre-K and Kindergarten begins
on Sept. 3 with half days.
Stay tuned.
• Friday, Sept. 11, will mark
the 25th anniversary of the
COLORING BOOKS FOR A CAUSE: The Saugus-Everett Elks Drug Awareness program recently
donated drug awareness coloring books to Prince Pizzeria for distribution to their youth
guests. Prince is a proud supporter of the Elks Drug Awareness program. These informative
coloring books offer fun along with educational information to help our children be aware of
the problems that face our community. Pictured from left to right are Elks Drug Awareness
Committee Chairperson Ron Visconti, Prince Pizzeria General Manager Erica Noone and Prince
Pizzeria Owner Steven Castraberti. (Courtesy photo to The Saugus Advocate)

terrorist attacks on the Twin
Towers in New York City. It involved
four hijacked airliners
in coordinated attacks by the
Islamic terrorist organization
al-Qaeda. Two planes crashed
into the Twin Towers, and another
was flown into the Pentagon
building, which houses
the nation’s Department of
Defense, in Arlington, Va. There
was a passenger mutiny on
the fourth jet, which crashed
in a field in Shanksville, Pa., instead
of its intended target –
believed to be the U.S. Capitol
or the White House. The Saugus
Fire Department is expected
to have its normal ceremony
late morning on Sept. 11.
Meanwhile, Board of Selectmen
Chair Debra Panetta and
former Selectman Corinne Riley
are coordinating a special
9-11 remembrance event at 6
p.m. in front of Saugus Town
Hall.
• On Saturday, Sept. 12, the
45th Annual Saugus Founder’s
Day celebration will be held
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside
Saugus Town Hall and continuing
down Central Street and
Taylor Street. It’s been called
the town’s biggest fund-raising
event for nonprofit agencies
and various community
groups. Founder’s Day will
once again offer residents the
opportunity to come together
to show their Saugus pride
while they stroll past more
than 100 booths set up for the
celebration. There will be food,
craft and informational booths
set up. There will be various
entertainment performances
involving music, theatre and
dance groups. The highlight
of this huge community social
occasion will be the presentation
of this year’s Saugus Persons
of the Year 2026 recipients
– a “Man of the Year and
a “Woman of the Year. A list of
the recipients dating back to
1989 will be read as part of the
ceremony. A makeshift stage
will be set up on the steps of
Saugus Town Hall for living
“Person of the Year recipients
to sit and welcome the two
honorees they voted on for this
year’s presentation.
• On Monday, Sept. 14, there
will be a vigil in front of Saugus
Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. for
Saugus to come together as a
community to remember the
lives the town has lost due to
overdose and suicide.
• Saugus Olympics Day at
World Series Park in Saugus
will be held on Saturday, Sept.
26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nancy
Kerrigan, a former Olympics
medalist, will take part in
the opening ceremony and will
be available to meet and greet
those in attendance. Other former
Olympics medalists, including
athletes who competed
in this year’s Winter Olympics,
have been invited. Funds
raised from the event will go to
Challenger Baseball and Boys
& Girls Club. A baseball tournament
involving Challenger
Baseball teams from the area
will start at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m.
the opening ceremony and parade
of athletes will take place.

September events, please

Summer Reading Program
ends today
By all accounts, it’s been another
fun and successful year
for the Saugus Public Library’s
Summer Reading Program.
And everybody who participated
was a winner – because
they honed their reading skills
while also earning prizes, according
to Amy Melton, Head
of Children’s Services at the library.
The last day to pick up
prizes is today (Friday, August
21), she said.
“So keep reading, keep earning
prizes, and keep your reading
adventure going! We’re
grateful to the New Friends
of the Saugus Library and the
Saugus Library Foundation for
their generous support of this
year’s program, Amy said.
This week’s “Shout Outs
At this week’s (Tuesday, Aug.
18) Board of Selectmen’s meeting,
the board’s chair, Debra
Panetta, offered a special
“Shout Out – for the benefit
of Saugus TV viewers as well
as Saugus Advocate readers –
to the board’s clerk, Meredith
Casagrande, for the preparation
that went into the seven
public hearings that were
held: “Meredith worked super
hard to get all of these hearings
in order and make sure
that everything was in proper
order and proper format. And I
know that she literally jumped
through hoops to get everything
for us tonight so nothing
had to be continued. So, thank
you Meredith, for going over
and above. We appreciate it.
Selectman Michael Serino
quipped, good naturedly:
“Thanks Meredith. Don’t fall
when you jump through that
hoop.
Saugus Council on Aging
Director Laurie Davis publicly
thanked the selectmen in
a recent letter for accepting
two new vehicles for the Saugus
Council on Aging to support
the transportation needs
of the town’s senior residents:
“The first vehicle is a 2026
Ford Transit 11-passenger van,
which will be used to transport
seniors safely to and from the
Saugus Senior Center, as well
as provide transportation for
grocery shopping and other
Council on Aging programs
and activities. This vehicle will
help us continue to provide reliable,
accessible transportation
while meeting the growing
needs of our senior population.
“The
second vehicle is a
2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid,
which will be used primarily
to transport seniors to and
from medical appointments.
As you know, access to dependable
transportation is essential
for many older adults to
attend medical visits, receive
treatments and maintain their
health and independence.
A special “Shout Out from
The Saugus Advocate editor
to Saugonian Millie Doucette,
who celebrated her 101st
birthday today (Friday, Aug.
21). In an interview last year
for “The Advocate Asks, Millie
shared some advice on how

Saugus Gardens in the Summer
Here’s what’s blooming in town this week to make your walks more enjoyable
By Laura Eisener
T
he rose mallow or
hardy hibiscus (Hibiscus
moscheutos) is
a native North American
perennial with huge flowers
that almost defy belief.
The huge blossoms look like
they should be tropical, but
this species is actually hardy
to Zone 4 so it can survive
colder winters than ours!
The roots can survive short
periods of down to -30 degrees
Fahrenheit, enabling
aboveground parts to resprout
in the spring. This
plant likes frequent watering
and can even tolerate growing
in some standing water
at times. There are some
at York’s Wild Kingdom in
Maine that have been planted
to enhance the jungle
theme, blooming in a shallow
pond. Many Saugus gardeners
have been intrigued by
these plants and have several
of them in their gardens, including
a hillside site on Walnut
Street with red flowering
rose mallows visible to anyone
driving by. The house is
currently on the market, and
the big blossoms, visible to
drivers on the street, will certainly
turn some heads.
In addition to red, flowers
may be various shades
of pink, solid white or white
with a reddish central circle,
or light pinkish violet. There
are some hybrids like ‘Watermelon
Ruffles’ which have extra
petals and dark reddish
foliage rather than the more
common green. People often
call these “dinner plate hibiscus
because of the huge
blossoms. It can also grow
fairly tall, often 5-6 feet, once
it is a few years old.
Bold flowers like the hibiscus
often pair well with finer
textured blossoms like daisy
fleabane (Erigeron annuus),
a member of the aster family
(Asteraceae) whose flower
heads are very tiny (about
an inch across). The stems can
often grow quite tall (5 feet
or so) in a single season. You
will probably never see this
in garden centers but it may
be growing in your garden
it provides some interest as
a filler plant between perennials
in the garden without
overshadowing most plants
growing there. I consider it
among the “welcome weeds
that I usually leave alone
when they come up.
When you go for a walk
on the roads or trails at
Breakheart Reservation at
this time of year, you may be
suddenly aware of a sweet
fragrance before you see
where it might be coming
from. I would describe the
floral fragrance as lemony yet
sweet, and you might sudGARDENS

Annual Walk of Hope to Benefit ALS
scheduled for Sept. 12
W
alkers are signing
up for the 25th annual
Walk of Hope
for ALS, a 3.5-mile walk around
Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield,
to benefit The Angel Fund for
ALS Research, on Saturday, September
12. A release of doves in
honor of those living with amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS) and
those who have lost their courageous
battle to the disease will
be held prior to the start of the
walk. The walk begins with registration
at 9 a.m. followed by
the start of the walk at 11 a.m.In
addition to the walk around
Lake Quannapowitt, the event
includes activities and refreshments
for all registered walkers.
The Angel Fund for ALS Research
is a nonprofit charity
dedicated to supporting ALS research.
ALS — more commonly
known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease
— is a progressive, always fatal
neuromuscular disease that
leads to muscle weakness and, as
it progresses, results in total paralysis
and the inability to speak
and swallow while the mind and
senses remain intact.
“For 25 years, the Walk of Hope
for ALS has been much more
than a walk—it has been a powerful
demonstration of hope,
compassion, and determination.
Every step taken around Lake
Quannapowitt honors those living
with ALS, remembers the
loved ones we have lost, and
brings us closer to finding effective
treatments and, ultimately,
a cure, said The Angel Fund
President Rich Kennedy. “We invite
families, friends, businesses,
and our entire community to join
us on September 12th. Together,
we can send a powerful message
to those affected by ALS
that they are not alone, and together,
we can continue to Step
Up to Cure ALS.
Walkers of all abilities are encouraged
to participate as individuals
or as a team. To register
as a walker or to register a team,
log on to The Angel Fund website
at www.theangelfund.org or call
the organization at 781-245-7070.
The Angel Fund will also honor
those who have ALS and
those who have lost their battle
with the disease with the Faces
of ALS®. Any participating team
or individual who would like to
honor a loved one with a poster

Savvy Senior
Robotic Pets Can Provide
by Jim Miller
Comfort to Elderly Seniors
Dear Savvy Senior,
My mother, who has dementia,
recently moved into an assisted living
facility that doesn’t allow pets.
I’m thinking about getting her a robotic
pet to cheer her up. Are they
worth it, and if so, which one do you
recommend?
--Inquiring Daughter
Dear Inquiring,
It’s completely natural to want
to bring a little furry joy into your
mom’s life. Moving into a new
home without her pets can be
tough, and sometimes even a
small companion can make a big
difference. Robotic pets – lifelike,
interactive companions – can
brighten the days of seniors with
dementia in ways you might not
expect. They’re more than just
cute gadgets; they offer comfort,
companionship, and a sense
of purpose, along with plenty of
smiles and fun. Before you pick
one, here’s what you should know.
Why pets matter
Pets aren’t just cute – they’re
family. They bring happiness,
companionship, and even a gentle
sense of routine. Studies have
shown that pets can help reduce
stress, anxiety, and depression,
encourage light activity, and improve
overall well-being. They
can also provide a sense of connection,
which can be especially
grounding for seniors living with
cognitive changes.
Unfortunately, many seniors,
like your mom, have to give up
pets when they move into care
facilities or can no longer care for
them on their own. That’s where
robotic pets can step in. Many
studies have shown that robotic
companion animals can improve
quality of life by offering comfort,
interaction, and a sense of companionship.
Still,
it’s important to remember
that not all seniors connect with
robotic pets. Some may ignore
them completely, while others enjoy
holding them or respond positively
to a lifelike companion that
reacts and even “talks back.
Best options
If you’re looking for a high-tech
option, Jennie, a new Labrador
puppy from Tombot (tombot.
com), is the most impressive option
available. Soft, cuddly, and
very lifelike, she reacts to touch
and voice, moves naturally, and
even barks on command. A smartphone
app lets you name her, customize
her behavior, and track interactions.
She runs on a rechargeable
battery and is expected to
cost around $1,500, with financing
available. Jennie is currently
on back order, with new units expected
this summer or fall, so interested
buyers may need to join
a waitlist.
If that’s more than you want to
spend, Joy for All Companion Pets
(joyforall.com) are a wonderful
alternative. These cats and dogs
cost $160 or $180 and respond
to touch with purring or barking.
They can move their heads, lift
their paws, and open and close
their eyes. With soft, brushable
fur and a gentle “heartbeat, they
feel surprisingly real. They also
give seniors a comforting routine,
like stroking or “feeding their pet,
which can be both calming and
engaging.
For seniors who use a walker,
the Walker Squawker bird ($65),
also available from Joy for All, attaches
to the device and chirps
when the walker stops moving. It
responds to touch and sound, offering
a playful companion and
gentle encouragement to stay
active. Small touches like this can
make a big difference in lifting
spirits and keeping seniors engaged.
Robotic
pets aren’t a replacement
for real animals, but they
can bring companionship, comfort,
and joy to seniors who can
no longer have a furry friend. They
are especially well-suited for seniors
with dementia, providing interaction,
routine, and a sense of
connection. Whether you choose
a sophisticated option like Jennie
or a more affordable Joy for
All pet, these interactive companions
can turn moments of loneliness
into smiles, connection, and
a little extra joy every day.

denly find yourself pining for
some lemonade. Especially
in moist locations at the foot
of Breakheart Hill and along
the Saugus riverbank, the
native shrub known as summersweet
or coastal sweet
pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia)
blooms through much of
July and August, as it does
throughout most of New England
and many coastal areas
from Nova Scotia to Florida.
In the woods these shrubs often
grow up to 8 feet tall, but
popular cultivars are generally
shorter and include several
dwarf forms, which rarely
exceed 4 feet in height,
and ‘Ruby Spice,’ which usually
grows 6 feet tall. These
shrubs can grow well in sun
or shade, and like the rose
mallow they like slightly
more moist than average
soils. Wild ones and some cultivated
varieties usually have
white flowers, but there are
also occasionally pink flowers,
including the popular
nursery variety ‘Ruby Spice.’
Even when summer has ended
and all the blossoms gone
by, summersweet provides a
nice yellow fall foliage color.
Interesting seed heads that
resemble peppercorns remain
through the winter.
