she got dirty with a smile on
her face.
Vanessa’s sister, Natalia Ardagna,

Firefighters rescue ducklings from storm drain
By Tara Vocino
R
evere firefighters were
called upon to rescue nine
ducklings who were stuck in a
storm drain at 18 Griffin St. last
Thursday afternoon.
According to Capt. Robert
Fortuna, Capt. Domenic LaSala
along with firefighters Patrick
Roosa and Michael Forte arrived
at the scene to find a man
standing over the storm drain
where the ducklings were
trapped approximately five
feet underground. The crew
of Engine 4 used two plastic
rakes to scoop the ducklings
from the drain. Surprisingly,
the first few ducklings jumped
back in, but firefighters placed
them into a bucket to keep
them out of the drain. During
the rescue, the mother duck
stood anxiously watching the
operation from a distance. The
ducklings were taken across
the street, where the mother
retrieved her ducklings.

Basement fire prompts
candle safety reminder
Fire officials are again stressing
the danger of candles after
an unattended candle caused
approximately $30,000 in damage
in a basement fire at 451
Revere Beach Blvd. on May 11.
“The fire investigation concluded
that an unattended
candle lit too close to combustibles
was the cause,” Fortuna
said. “Many people use candles
to light and decorate their
homes, but maybe it’s time to
consider a safer alternative.”
Fortuna also said candles
should always be kept in an appropriate
container and a safe
distance away from anything
that could catch fire.

Revere Beach and Short Beach among top water quality beaches in the region
By Alexis Mikulski
S
ave the Harbor/Save
the Bay, an organization
founded out of Boston, released
its annual water quality
report card on Memorial
Day. This report card features
good news for Revere
residents. Revere Beach and
Short Beach are on the list of
beaches that have gone up
in water quality since 2017.
Revere Beach has a six-year
average of 97% clean water
quality, while Short Beach
has a six-year average of 91%
clean water quality.
According to Save the Harbor/Save
the Bay, despite the
record rainfall last year, 13 of
the 15 metropolitan beaches
scored over 90%, with seven
achieving perfect scores of
100%. For all of the beaches
combined, overall water
quality was up from 95% in
2017.
Revere Beach was the first
public beach established in
the United States. Located
just north of Boston, it features
paved walkways, numerous
surrounding restaurants
and easy access from
downtown Boston via the
MBTA.
Short Beach speaks to its
name and is a much smaller
beach located south of Revere
Beach. It was voted one
of the best Boston beaches
by Boston Magazine and is
known for its serenity, sandcastle
building and swimming.
Both Revere Beach and
Short Beach are open to the
public from Dawn to Dusk.
Save the Harbor/Save the
Bay was first established in
1986 by an attorney who
had a dream of a clean Boston
Harbor. Since its start,
the organization successfully
advocated for the completion
of the Boston Harbor
Cleanup, leads and manages
the Metropolitan Beaches
Commission and strengthens
Boston’s waterfront neighborhoods
and beach communities.
Their
website states, “Today
we are the region’s leading
voice for clean water and
continued public investment
in Boston Harbor, the region’s
public beaches, the Boston
Harbor Islands and serve as
the Boston Harbor Connection
for a generation of young
people and their families.”
The Director of Strategy
and Communications for
Save the Harbor/Save the
Bay, E. Bruce Berman, Jr., said,
“Save the Harbor believes
that sound science and good
data are critical to the success
of the Boston Harbor cleanup.
Our annual Metropolitan
Beaches Water Quality Report
Card gives the public important
information they need
to make informed decisions
about where and when it is
safe to swim on the region’s
public beaches from Nahant
to Nantasket.”
Save the Harbor/Save the
Bay emphasizes the importance
of making smart decisions
about where to swim,
especially as the summer
draws near. They urge the
public to use common sense,
as well as the report included
in this article, as tools to
make an informative and safe
choice.

O
n Saturday, May 18, the
Lynn YMCA hosted its annual
5k road race at Nahant
Beach Reservation. On
a beautiful spring morning,
a record-breaking 300-plus
runners came out to support
the cause and run for the
Lynn community. The aptly
named “Stride Along the Tide”
5k took runners of all ages
through scenic neighborhoods
and along the beautiful
coast of Nahant.
The Lynn YMCA 5k raises
funds for the Y’s Annual
Campaign scholarship
fund, which ensures no one
is turned away for inability
to pay. Thanks to the support
of runners and generous
sponsors, the Y is able to provide
youngsters with the opportunity
to take lifesaving
swim lessons, to attend day
camp and to access healthy
living programs at the Y. This
year’s race raised more than
$12,000 for the Annual Campaign
fund.
Prizes were awarded to the
top overall male and female
finishers in each category as
well as to the top three finishers,
male and female, in each
age group. Congratulations
to Tom Walsh of Melrose for
taking home the prize for top
male finisher and to 12-yearold
Hazel Mouhidin for being
the first female to cross the
finish line.
Sarah Fellah of Lynn.
The Stride Along the Tide
5k is the second race in the
YMCA of Metro North’s annual
road race series. The series
brings together seven different
communities to run for the
Y’s cause. These unique races
are featured across our communities
to motivate, inspire
and promote the YMCA’s mission
of youth development,
healthy living and social responsibility.
In July the series
continues with the Torigian
Family YMCA “Beat the Heat”
5k on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. The
Melrose Family YMCA will finish
off the 2019 series with
their Halloween-themed 10th
Annual “Spooky Sprint” 5k on
Oct. 26.

Gov. Baker refiles legislation to
increase penalties for child predators
B
OSTON – Governor Charlie Baker recently refiled legislation to strengthen
penalties for child predators and reform the civil commitment process
for sex offenders. First filed in June 2018, the legislation will require a
full hearing by a court to resolve disputes over whether a sexually dangerous
person should be released from custody. This legislation also increases
the mandatory minimum penalty for rape of a child with force by a person
previously convicted of sexual offenses to life without parole, and establishes
a new child predator offense for rapes of multiple children with
force with a mandatory penalty of life without parole.
Inadequacies in the current system were recently highlighted by the
case of Wayne Chapman, an admitted and convicted repeat child rapist,
who was found not sexually dangerous by two qualified examiners and
was ordered to be released through a recent decision of the Massachusetts
Supreme Judicial Court.
“The case of Wayne Chapman proves that the Massachusetts criminal

justice system is falling short when it comes to keeping serial child predators
out of our communities and behind bars, and this bill is aimed to
address this very concern,” said Baker. “We look forward to working with
the Legislature to pass our legislation, protect our children, and keep our
neighborhoods safe by preventing the future release of extremely dangerous
individuals convicted of heinous crimes.”
The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently affirmed a Superior
Court decision ordering Chapman’s release, ruling that the Commonwealth’s
civil commitment statute does not permit a trial if two qualified
examiners agree that the individual no longer remains sexually dangerous,
even if other equally qualified experts disagree. The legislation filed
by Governor Baker would reform that statute so that any disagreement
among experts will result in a trial at which a judge or jury can hear all the
evidence about whether a person remains sexually dangerous and make
a fully informed decision regarding release.
“It’s vital that our court system treats crimes against children with the
seriousness they deserve,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. “By
strengthening the review process for child predators, we can ensure that
dangerous individuals remain off our streets and away from our children
and communities.”
“We need to act quickly to update to our laws to better protect public
safety and support victims who deserve to be heard,” said Attorney General
Maura Healey. “This legislation makes meaningful changes to the
process to prevent dangerous people from being released.”

“Our court system needs the tools necessary to keep convicted serial
predators like Wayne Chapman from hurting more defenseless children,”
said Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas Turco. “These individuals
simply pose too great a threat to the most vulnerable members
of our community to be given another chance to reoffend.”
“Our office is always working to protect the public and exploring every
possible way to do that, including making necessary changes in the law,”
said the president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys’ Association,
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz. “Gov. Baker’s
bill would strengthen the penalties for child predators and reform the
civil commitment process. We are all working together with a common
goal: to keep our communities safe from repeat sex offenders. This bill will
aid in that effort and I urge the Legislature to move forward and pass it.”
“There is no question that the safety and security of our children remains
the number one priority of law enforcement,” said the president of the
Massachusetts Major City Chiefs of Police, Chelsea Police Chief Brian
Kyes. “Accordingly, we need safeguards to protect these children from
serial rapists who reoffend after release. We reserve life in prison only for
the most egregious offenders, and repeat child rapists are among them
by any reasonable definition.”

hours teaching soccer fundamentals
using fun training drills,
while partner Fitzgerald Physical
Therapy Associates gave instruction
on warm up exercises
to help avoid injuries.
“One of the pillars of our philosophy
of being a club that is
active in the local community
is engaging local youth soccer
players, so this Saturday’s match
will be very special for everyone
associated with Boston City FC,”
said the club’s Managing Director,
Craig Tornberg. “We have established
a wonderful relationship
with Medford Soccer during
the past three years and are delighted
to continue that during
the current season and welcome
the next generation of soccer
enthusiasts to our home match
at Hormel Stadium.”
The Lions have played their
first two matches of the 2019
NPSL season at Harry Della Russo
Stadium and will bring competitive
action against two of
the league’s top-ranked teams
to Medford. This Saturday’s opponent,
the Brooklyn Italians,
has won three straight matches,
while the legendary New
York Cosmos, who visit on June
15, are the league leaders with
five wins.
Boston City FC arrive at Hormel
Stadium having beaten Greater
Lowell Rough Diamonds 2-1
last week with two goals from
joint top-scorer John Dumbuya,
but lost the return match 2-0 on
Sunday.
Tickets for Saturday’s match
and remaining home games
are available from $12 at https://
www.bostoncityfc.com/product/season-tickets/

that, the Rhode Island Reds visit
Harry Della Russo Stadium in
Revere on Sunday, June 9 (kickoff

Patriots softball team clinches state tourney berth with win over Malden
By Joe Mitchell
T
he Revere High School softball
team (10-9) is in the
state tournament after its 13-9
victory over Malden last week,
but Coach Joe Ciccarello remains
concerned about his
squad’s overall persona.
“The win over Malden didn’t
come without some drama,”
Ciccarello said. “We were leading,
10-2, and I thought we
would end it that way. However,
as we have been doing all
year long, we gave up a bunch
of runs in one inning and made
it interesting.”
But on a positive note, Eve
Lescovitz and Julianna Raffa
came through with some big
hits, according to Ciccarello, to
keep their teammates in command
of the game.
Senior Day, last Friday, didn’t
go according to plan when
Beverly came to town and ended
up beating the local nine,
12-4. “We played well for six innings,
once again, before Beverly
scored seven runs in the
top of the sixth inning to secure
the win,” said Ciccarello.
“We play well for so long, but
just can’t finish games,” added
the veteran coach.
It was also the same old story
against non-league Newton
South on Monday afternoon,
May 27. The Pats were winning,
7-1, but once again they had
trouble maintaining the advantage
in the sixth. Newton
South scored nine runs in the
home half of the frame to end
up winning the game, 10-7.
“This is insane. We played really
well again for five innings,
and then make a folly of errors
and bad plays once things go
south,” said a frustrated Ciccarello.
“We just seem to lose focus
and develop bad body language
when things get tough.
No one can step up and stop
the bleeding.”
“It’s tough to expect a turnaround,
but we do have the talent
to do it. It’s just a matter of
focusing on the entire game,”
added Ciccarello.
The Revere girls have one
more regular season game
left, and it’s against non-league
Austin Prep this Saturday, June
1, at home, beginning at 10
a.m. It will certainly be a good
tune-up for the postseason,
and another opportunity to
straighten out their late game
missteps.
The MIAA will announce the
state tournament pairings on
Tuesday, June 4, and the Patriots
will begin the second season
no earlier than Wednesday.
Check out www.miaa.net
on Tuesday night for the complete
list of the tournament
pairings.
Baseball Pats wind down the season with wins over Malden, Somerville
By Joe Mitchell
The Revere boys, like their

7-12 overall) is wrapping up
the season on a positive note
after beating Malden (8-5)
and Somerville (10-2) this

once to non-league Woburn
Monday afternoon, 6-2.
The Pats took on host Boston

If they defeated Latin,
they would have exceeded

least accomplishing one of

peers, always have the state
tournament in sight every

if that wasn’t realistic he
wanted them to at least surpass
the previous year’s win
total, and a victory yesterday
would have done that.
Next spring, they will be
a part of the new Greater
Boston League, along with
Medford, Malden, Somerville
and Everett. In a prior
incarnation, Revere was
a major player in the GBL
that ceased to exist when it
merged with the NEC a couple
of years ago.
