By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
Happy New Year! January is a great time for reflection and anticipation — reflection of the year that has
passed and anticipation of the year to come. Plan to spend time at the amenities enjoying all that
Florida’s peak season brings. Starting the week at Lake Ashton’s Monday Coffee informational meetings
will provide a good overview of upcoming classes, shows, meetings, and parties. Mix it up in 2022 and
try sitting at a new table at Monday Coffee! Hundreds of new residents moved to Lake Ashton in 2021,
so reach out to new faces and welcome new neighbors.
With the increase in population, staff has begun to see an increase in room bookings and activities being
offered by residents, so there may be times when a room and or time that is desired may be unavailable.
Luckily residents have two buildings in the community, so if a room or time is unavailable at the
Clubhouse residents are encouraged to reach out to the HFC to check availability and vice versa. We are
excited to see so many residents enjoying the amenities and want to ensure all residents have an equal
opportunity to book a room for a new activity or join one of the over 140 groups that currently meet at
the Clubhouse. With that being said there are some changes that are going to take place as of January 1.
This includes the renaming of "private" groups to "prior registration required.” Residents interested in
joining a new group should visit the Clubhouse Activities Desk to obtain the contact information for the
facilitator of the group they are looking to join. As a reminder, the Joint Amenity Facilities Policy states:
"Club membership and Club activities must be available to all Residents or Renters/Leaseholders.” In
addition, anyone booking a reservation in the Clubhouse Game Room needs to be aware that as of
January 1, that room will be available for multiple activities at the same time. For example, if someone
has reserved the Game Room to play cards or conduct a meeting, the room will still be available for open
play on the billiards tables. If this does not match your
needs staff will try their hardest to find a room better
suited for what you require. An extra day of Open
Bowling was also added to the schedule to accommodate
the increase in use of that amenity. We hope residents
understand these changes are not meant to be intrusive
but to allow for the amenities to be enjoyed by all who
want to use them. Staff always encourages residents to
become more involved in community activities designed
to benefit the body, mind, and spirit and with these
changes and the support of the many club, group, and
organization facilitators this will be possible for everyone.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

These are all volunteers that work very hard to ensure
there is a robust activities schedule for all residents to

Another year of living in paradise … I hope you never tire of
hearing that. OK, everyone knows that there’s nothing that is
perfect, but looking at “the glass” as half full instead of half
empty goes a long way towards a happier, healthier life. My wish
for everyone is to enjoy a life filled with kindness, smiles,
positivity, peacefulness, good health, and happiness. A big wish,
but individually, we have the power to help make it happen.

With this year being the 21st birthday celebration for Lake Ashton, we can look back and see the
improvements over the years. Many events will be held at the HFC and the Clubhouse to celebrate
the week of January 17th. Stop in and check them out. Good changes continue at the HFC. The
Pickleball Courts have the bottom railing in place to secure the fencing as of December. The HFC
building and Hwy. 653 Gate House have recently received a new paint job, and new wooden floors
will be added to the Racquetball Court and Sports Court this month. In February new flooring will
be installed in the Fitness Center. New LED lighting replacements continue at the HFC and so do
the savings from these lights. Your LA II CDD Board continues to work diligently to improve your
amenities without additional fees. Happy New Year, and Happy Birthday Lake Ashton!

SUPERVISORS VACANCY
Residents interested in being considered to fill
the vacancy can submit a resume or letter of
interest to the District Manager, Jill Burns
(jburns@gmscfl.com) by Wednesday, January 12 at
noon. In order to be considered you must be at
least 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and
registered to vote at an address within the
boundaries of Lake Ashton CDD (Lake Wales). The
resident selected to fill the vacant seat will serve
the remainder of the term until November of
2022. Feel free to contact the District Manager
with any questions.
WILDLIFE ALERT
Alligators and crocodiles are
an important part of Florida's
heritage and play a valuable
role in the ecosystems where
they live. Even though the
weather might be cooling
down, those who live near
lakes and ponds should still
expect to see alligators from
time to time, as evidenced by
this picture taken by resident
David Muller in mid-November! Remember -
never feed or approach an alligator. If you
encounter an aggressive alligator, call the
Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 1-866-FWC-GATOR
(392-4286). Alligators under 4 feet in length are
not considered a threat to humans. As long as
residents have a healthy respect for wildlife,
including alligators, there are opportunities to live
and let live.
LAKE ASHTON COMMUNITY
ACTION COMMITTEE
By Shelley Miller
The booming residential housing developments in
the area are straining the roads, water, sewer and
12
power everyone enjoys. The LA Community
Action Committee was formed to advocate for
changes the group would like to see to ensure the
safety and welfare of Lake Ashton residents. The
January issue of the LA Times includes a flyer with
more information and a survey to provide
feedback from you to better represent the Lake
Ashton Community. Additional comments are
we l c omed — you c a n ema i l t hem t o
LakeAshtonCommunityAction@gmail.com.
An LA Community Action Committee meeting for
all residents is planned to field concerns,
questions, and ask for help in bringing this
problem to the attention of decision-makers. This
informational meeting will be held January 10
after Monday Coffee in the Clubhouse Ballroom
around 10 am. All Lake Ashton residents who are
interested in this topic are
invited to attend.
AQUATIC
EDUCATION
CORNER
What is a littoral shelf and
why does my pond have to
have one?
By design, some of the ponds
in Lake Ashton contain littoral shelves, which are
shallow planted wetland areas within the pond.
Regulatory agencies, such as SWFWMD require
that littoral shelves be vegetated. These areas are
usually about 1-2 feet in depth and occupy
approximately 30% of the pond. Littoral shelves
provide emergent aquatic vegetation the
appropriate water depth necessary to thrive. This
vegetation competes with algae for space, light
and nutrients and helps to filter out pollutants
such as heavy metals, oils and fertilizers. The
thicker and denser the littoral vegetation, the less
sunlight, living space and nutrients for algae
growth. Ponds and littoral shelves can provide an
aesthetically pleasing and healthy habitat for a
wide variety of wildlife including fish, birds and
reptiles.

AREA AT THE CLUBHOUSE
Several comments on the Focus 2025 survey
mentioned parking being an issue at the amenities.
The first Entertainment Series Show is on January 14,
so this will be the first day of testing out golf cart
parking on the Basketball Court during that show.
Signage will be placed at the entrance to the parking
lot advising residents that there is
additional golf cart parking on the
Basketball Court. Email blasts will be
sent with pictures letting residents
know where this additional parking is
as well. This area will be available as an
"overflow parking only" area during
large events. As always, residents are
encouraged to car or cartpool to highcapacity
events at the amenities.
OPEN BOWL ING AT
ASHTON LANES
An extra date has been added, so now
residents can enjoy Open Bowling on
Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays.
Stop by Ashton Tap and Grill, grab a
drink and enjoy a game of bowling
with friends. Instructions are on the
bulletin board in the back of the room.
Shoes and bowling balls are available
for use. Please be sure to put the
bowling balls and shoes back when
done using them.
LAKE ASHTON
LEADERSHIP
Those in a leadership position for Lake
Ashton clubs, groups or organizations
can attend an informative session
February 23 at 11 am in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. Leaders will find out more
about resources and support facilitated
by staff. Topics include setting up
electronic mail messages, planning events, clerical
support, amenity policies, and more. The purpose of
the session is to ensure organizational leaders know
all of the available tools for a club’s continued success:
promotion, media, support, guidelines, and more.
While the session is designed for new leaders, anyone
interested in the topic is welcome to attend. Please
sign up in advance at the Clubhouse Activities Desk
Information wall or by using the online sign-up tool so
adequate materials are prepared.

TOYS FOR TOTS
By Fred & Cynthia Halde
Lake Ashton … you did it again! When the call went
out to the community for support of "Toys for Tots",
you responded, again, like you always do … with
kindness and generosity. Your contributions will most
certainly put a smile on the faces of many young
people this holiday season. Well done! And many
thanks to the HFC staff who helped with this effort,
especially Krystle, who would call at least twice a week
with the same five welcomed words: "The box is full
again!” You are great, HFC. Many thanks! Peace to all.
generous LA residents who donated gifts and gift
cards to the Caring Tree. The need this year was even
greater than last year and you responded by
exceeding last year's generous donations. A special
thank you to BOLLA who donated 65 blankets, Sew
What who donated 75 handmade items, and the LA
Niners who donated 213 gifts. The Lake Wales Care
Center passes along their heartfelt "thank you" to
everyone. You helped make a very merry Christmas for
so many families in the area.
BE A SANTA TO A SENIOR
By Kathryn Jusaites
On behalf of the Home Instead office in Winter
Haven, we would like to thank the Lake Ashton
Community for their participation in the Be A Santa
To A Senior program this year. Your generosity and
kindness are very much appreciated.
THANK YOU FROM THE LA
BENEF IT ASSOCIATION
A huge thank you to the many Lake Ashton residents
who have helped us raise funds for the local schools. It
took many hands to run the Casino Night Benefit and
we are so very grateful for all the time and effort you
have given over the years. The schools have been very
appreciative of our help. The last donation has been
delivered by way of the Lake Wales Charter School
Foundation. The need is still great so never stop
helping the schools when you see an opportunity.

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is
a gem flying on wings and a year-round
resident in Lake Ashton. The male sports the
iridescent ruby-red gorget. The hummingbird
family, found only in the Americas, includes the
smallest birds in the world. Their iridescent
colors shine brilliantly depending on the light.
These highly-territorial acrobats fly up, down,
backwards, sideways and hover in one spot on
wing beats as fast as up to 80 times per
second. What's the best way to attract them?
Hummingbird feeders are a lot of work to keep
clean and safe for the birds. Those who use
feeders should not use dye since it may harm
the birds. Instead, a red ribbon tied to the
feeder can get their attention. Landscaping
with a small tree surrounded by Firebush or
Firecracker is the safest and most effective
way to provide perches and the high-energy
nectar they need and love. Keep your eyes
open — they are really fast!

LA ( LW) HOA CORNER
By Debby Landgrebe
Members of the LA Lake Wales HOA have lots of
things going on and your Board of Directors
(BOD) are busy at work for you.
You can reach your current HOA BOD at:
• President Ken Rickey,
president@lakeashtonhoa.org
• Vice President David Muller,
vp@lakeashtonhoa.org
• Treasurer Bob Prowant,
treasurer1@lakeashtonhoa.org
• Secretary Keith Stevens,
secretary3@lakeashtonhoa.org
• Secretary Debby Landgrebe,
secretary1@lakeashtonhoa.org
or you can reach all the directors at once using
directors@lakeashtonhoa.org.
Assessments: By now you should have received
your HOA assessment. If you haven’t please
contact the management company Don Asher,
immediately by email (HOAdues@donasher.com).
Please note the assessment payment is due in
January. However, all assessments received before
February 15 will avoid additional processing and
late fees. Check the assessment document for
payment details. This is a NEW PROCESS.
Assessments WILL NOT be accepted in the HOA
mailbox or office. Checks are to be mailed along
with the coupon or use a credit card online.
Volunteers Needed: Get involved in your HOA!
Members to run for the HOA BOD are needed.
Dave Greer is chairing the Nominating Committee
— contact him at dwgreer7738@sbcglobal.net if
interested. The BOD will receive nominations from
the committee on January 4. At the monthly BOD
meeting on January 5, additional nominations
from the floor may be accepted. Volunteers for
ARC and other committees are also needed. In
January the ARC Guidelines, now called The
Design Review Guidelines, will start getting
refreshed and updated. Volunteers are needed to
assist with this project. Why not join? Thank you in
advance.
CC&Rs: At the time of this writing, the revised
document is in the hands of the attorney. Once it’s
returned to the BOD we will review and organize
a town hall meeting regarding the revised CC&Rs.
Additional information will be made available as
the BOD is updated. Plan on attending the townhall
meeting and the Annual Meeting. Your
attendance means you will know first-hand what is
going on. The BOD plans to present and vote on
the revised CC&Rs as part of the Members Annual
Meeting.
Members Annual Meeting is scheduled for the
end of February. This is your meeting, so please
plan on attending. Send topics you would like to
discuss or present, or updates you want to hear
about, to directors@lakeashtonhoa.org with your
name, address, phone number, and email.
ARC Compliance: It is your responsibility to
review and understand the ARC Rules, now called
The Design Review Guidelines, which stem from
the CC&Rs. It is your responsibility as a
homeowner to file an ARC request before any
outside changes or updates begins. Doing so will
minimize issues for everyone. Vendors and/or
neighbors cannot submit an ARC request on
behalf of the homeowner. One of the reasons to
purchase in Lake Ashton is because of its beauty.
Don Asher Management Company will be looking
at all Design Review Guideline compliances. All
properties within the HOA are being reviewed for
compliance with Design Review Guidelines. It’s up
to everyone to maintain the beauty of Lake
Ashton and that includes following The Design
Review Guidelines. If you don’t have a copy or
have questions, contact the HOA Manager at
manager@lakeashtonhoa.org or HOA BOD at
directors@lakeashtonhoa.org.
This is a great community. Everyone can work
together to maintain its beauty and camaraderie.
Thank you for your help and support.

SAFETY
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
The Lake Ashton Neighborhood Watch (which
counts every resident as a deputized member) has
expanded its mission of keeping a watch out for
crime to watching out for unsafe traffic behavior
involving commercial vehicles such as lawn care
services, delivery services, or construction vehicles.
All members should be vigilant for unsafe traffic
practices in the community (i.e. stop sign
violations, excessive speed or parking in a way that
hinders the normal flow of traffic). As a leader in
this Committee and an already successful crime
deterrent/prevention partner with CAP, LA Security
Officers and other Community Leaders, NW has a
perfect venue to keep an eye out for traffic safety
concerns throughout the community.
If you see an unsafe condition involving a
commercial vehicle, note the company name,
phone number if available, as well as time and
location of the incident. Then notify either the
Community Director where the incident occurred,
or the company directly. Neighborhood Watch and
its partners have been instrumental in keeping
Lake Ashton a relatively crime free community and
adding these efforts to ensure traffic safety will
further enhance our community’s safety. Happy
and Safe New Year to all!
All vehicles, including
golf carts, must obey
all stop signs and the
20 mph speed limit
throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, watch
for pedestrians at all
times. Obeying posted
speed limit and traffic
signs can help avert a
potential tragedy.
20
Please use
caution when
entering and
exiting the
commun i ty
v i a t h e
T h omp s o n
Nursery Road entrance. The entry gates are not on
a sensor. They are set to open for three seconds
and then close. If cars stop at the stop sign and
then hit the button to open the gate that will give
enough time for one vehicle to go through the
gate. If residents hit the button on the gate opener
coming off of Thompson Nursery Road it does not
allow for enough time for the vehicle to make it
through the gate and could potentially cause
damage to your vehicle and the gate arm. If any of
the gates are damaged due to negligence on the
driver's part any costs involved with the
replacement or repair of the gate arm will be the
responsibility of the driver.
When exiting the community, any vehicle close to
the height of the overhang should use the right
lane to exit the community even if turning left on
Thompson Nursery Road. Not doing so puts your
vehicle at risk of damage not to mention possible
property damage that will be the responsibility of
the driver. If unsure if the vehicle is close to the
height of the overhang please err on the side of
caution and use the right side to exit. Any
questions regarding the operation of the entry and
exit gates should be directed to Christine Wells at
cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com.

GOLF
LA NINERS
By Diane Struble
The Niners welcomed in December with an early
holiday lunch of a pasta buffet that ended with red
velvet cake on December 7 after a four-person
scramble. A huge thank you to Vicki and crew who
always go above and beyond to make these lunches
special. Everyone was pleased with the 22 ladies
who participated in the Member/Member
tournament December 9 and 10. Everyone really
enjoyed the experience, and hopefully there will be
bigger numbers next year! There's plenty of
excitement left in the winter schedule with
scrambles, shambles, and five clubs along with
postable score games.
The annual Niners/Blue Man tournament will be
held January 25 to January 26. This event is a
scramble that gives both leagues the chance to play
together, two males/two females, a guaranteed
good time for all. Any questions about the league
can be answered by Karen at 207-451-0143. Wishing
everyone a safe and very happy 2022!
LAMGA
By Paul Fichtman
The LAMGA 2022 season begins January 5 and
promises to be another exciting year of fun, friendly
and competitive events. The highlight of December
was the annual meeting luncheon on December 1
preceded by a Pick Your Partner Best Ball Event.
The 2022 Board was introduced following the
conclusion of our November elections and is
comprised of Rolly Geyer - President; Larry Wilson –
Vice President; Don Connors – Treasurer; Tim Wayt
– Tournament Chairman; Jacques Fleischmann –
Secretary; and Paul Fichtman – Publicity Chairman.
It’s that time of year again to join LAMGA for the
2022 season that kicks off on January 5. The league
plays every Wednesday morning throughout the
year.
This year’s schedule includes many great formats
with a large amount of Pick Your Partner/Pick Your
Foursome events and a number of lunches included
throughout the season. The highlight of the year is
the Member/Guest Tournament March 10 — 12 for
which details will be announced within the next
couple of weeks. The $25 annual membership fee is
one of the best bargains in Lake Ashton.
Registration forms are available in the Pro Shop. If
you have not signed up yet, get to the Pro Shop as
soon as possible so you do not miss out on any of
the fun competitions planned for the year.
Once again in 2022, Red Hoagland Hyundai will
sponsor the Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge from
January 1 through October 31. This very popular
contest awards the top four LAMGA money winners
during regular Wednesday league play with $80,
$60, $40 & $20, respectively in Pro Shop credits.
January’s schedule is: January 5: Pick Your
Foursome, Best 3 Nets; January 12: Modified Net
Stableford; January 19: Pick Your Foursome/Beat
the Board, Best 3 Nets; and January 26: Pick Your
10 Holes that will Count.

Thank you Lake Ashton!
The Red Hoagland Challenge started this
November and will run through the end of May.
Those LALGA members who are the highest
money winners will receive Pro Shop credits from
Red Hoagland Hyundai in the denominations of 1st

Meet Sandra Hockenberry
Sandy grew up in a small town in
Western Pennsylvania called
Kittanning. She attended Butler
County College and became an
LPN. She met John Milsom at a high school
reunion and they have been together for the last
10 years. She and John are temporary snowbirds
but they plan on making Lake Ashton their full time
residence in the next year. As she said, they “found
the light.”
Sandy and John were looking for a pet friendly 55+
community, as they have two dogs, and they came
across Lake Ashton. They drove through the front
entrance and Sandy said, “It was like someone had
sprinkled pixie dust on me.” She was hooked from
the very first visit. They looked at homes one day,
put a deposit down the next and went to the
design center on the third, as they were returning
to Pennslyvania.
Sandy has been playing golf on and off for about
15 years but only played 9-hole games up north.
She enjoys playing with the 18-holers especially
since there is a variety of games played.
In addition to golf, Sandy enjoys Bunco, Aqua
Motion, her neighbors and traveling with a group
of women whom she’s known for 25 years. They
enjoy traveling all over the world. Welcome to the
LALGA and Lake Ashton Sandy Hockenberry!

LA GARDEN CLUB
By Lynn Davis
The Lake Ashton Garden Club Team welcomed many
new members at the December meeting. Thank you.
The next meeting is scheduled for January 12 at 10
am in the Pavilion. The meeting's focus will be on how
to use pressed flowers/plants to create a lasting
creation. Sil Wells presented ways to press and use
them in many formats at the December meeting.
From framed art, to bookmarks and even flowers on
candles, it's a great way to keep enjoying the garden.
Sil encourages individuals planning to attend the
January meeting to begin pressing flowers/plants in a

GATHERING OF UPPER
MIDWESTERN STATES
By Cynthia Halde
This invitation is a call-out to the residents, past or
present, of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota,
Iowa and Wisconsin. For the last several years, LA
residents connected to these states have gathered
together to celebrate their geographic roots by
coming together for some food (potluck) and
fellowship. But, new coordinators are needed to
continue. The date is set for February 18 in the HFC
Community Room at 5:30 pm. Someone is needed to
send out emails/phone calls, set up food list, tell HFC
what/how tables should be set up, etc. We will be
glad to go over what we did in the past. If no one
volunteers to coordinate the potluck, it will be
cancelled. At the very least we would like to update
the records, so please pass along your thoughts and
contact information to Cynthia Halde at 231-343-1847
or haldehaven@gmail.com. Please respond by
January 12 and a final decision on whether it’s a go or
no go will be communicated by e-blast in February
and the February LA Times.

Each year this group “adopts” a local charity to

group chose the Lake Wales Care Center. This
year they set a goal that was higher than any
previous year and thanks to the charitable spirit of
this group, not only did we reach their goal, but
they exceeded it! A check for $1350 was

By Brenda Bush-Sayre
The Lake Ashton Republican Club held their annual
Christmas Party at the HFC on December 11. There
were over 100 members and guests in attendance
and it was an awesome night for everyone who
enjoyed great food, sang Christmas carols with the
LA Ashtones, and danced to music from the 60s-70s,
performed by the LA Wrecking Crew. The January
meeting will be held at the Clubhouse on January 26
from 4 to 6 pm. Social time will begin at 3:30. This
month’s speaker will be JC Martin who is the
Chairman of the Polk County Republican Executive
Committee. He will discuss party priorities for 2022
and will officiate the election of officers. All members
and LA residents are invited. Contact Brenda BushSayre,
(813)313-9911, bbs1954@icloud.com for more
information.
LA ROCKERS
By Connie Strassberg
Happy New Year! LA Rockers wishes all the members,
potential members, friends, and admirers a happy,
healthy, and productive 2022. December was
wonderful. On December 1, the group learned to make
pebble art — gluing small pebbles to larger rocks to
create a scene or design. There are definitely some
wonderful pebble artists in the group. The annual
holiday cupcake party was held on December 15, and
exchanged "Socks and Rocks" creations. In addition,
more than enough painted rocks were created to
donate holiday rocks to all the residents of the
Brookdale Nursing Home on Cypress Gardens Blvd.
The extra rocks were spread throughout the Lake
Ashton Community in order to bring holiday cheer to
LA neighbors. Come to the HFC Community Center on
alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm to meet a great
group of people and learn to paint rocks. It’s free!
There is no need for first timers to make a huge
investment for supplies — you can borrow what you
need. Upcoming meetings are January 12 and 26 —
come see what the group is about! To do so, join the
Facebook group "LA Rockers" or contact either MJ
Richards or Alice Mayer and let them know you are
coming. Once again, happy 2022!
SEW WHAT A ND
SO MUCH MORE
By Gretchen Frantz
The name Sew What and So
Much more reflects the great
variety of crafts enjoyed by the
members. The group meets
every Thursday from 1 to 3 pm in the HFC craft
room. Expanded beyond craft sewing, the
Thursday afternoon sessions may include projects
in knitting, crochet, card stitching, diamond dot
painting, cross stitch, needlepoint, wreath making
and so much more. The knitters and crocheters
work year round making hats, scarves and afghans
for charity. More than 450 hats have been
delivered to schools in Lake Wales and Winter
Haven, and dozens of lap robes and afghans to
church and hospice organizations. Come and share
your works in progress, refresh an old skill or learn
something new with fellow crafters.
LA WOODWORKERS ANNUAL
MEMBERSHIP MEETING
By Fred Powell
Lake Ashton Woodworkers will be holding their
annual Membership meeting on January 17 at 10:30
am in the Clubhouse after Monday Coffee. At this
meeting the election of new officers will be held.
Current members will need to sign the 2022 waiver
form and pay the annual dues. Residents interested
in joining should attend the meeting to sign up.
LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
The LA Swim Club is full of action! LASC members,
Cathy Liska and Sharon Swanson, excelled at the
2021 Florida State Senior Games. They were among
the top swimmers who competed December 11 and
12 in Coral Springs. Sharon and Cathy have qualified
to compete at the National Championships in May,
plus Cathy brought home a gold and two silver
medals and Sharon swam three personal best times.
Congratulations, ladies, and everyone wishes you
׉	7cassandra://4TRMaheSD0lYs5bPc9_4g2T8SJZwSv_hkzB-oL98N8w0`a%,wj3w5׉Efast swims at Nationals. The Florida State Games
are 30-years-old this year and are part of the
National Senior Games organization. Did you know
that the FL Senior Games organization offers 21
sports or recreation activities through 19 regional
games? Polk County offers one of those, but,
unfortunately, the 2022 Polk Co. Games have
cancelled all indoor events, including swimming,
due to the pandemic.
The Swim Club has donated a giant digital clock to
the HFC pool. Most clocks are hard to see for many
swimmers. This multi-function clock is highly visible
and can help water exercise instructors, lap
swimmers, water walkers, and swim club group
workouts. The LA Swim Club invites you to come
swim with them. Three group workouts are offered
each week for anyone looking for great over all and
injury free exercise, those who don't like to swim
alone, and those looking for motivation to get fit and
stay fit. All interest levels are welcome. See the HFC
schedule for Club workout times. For more
information, contact sandyw1994@aol.com.
LA PICKLEBALL
ASSOCIATION
By Chuck Caesar
Happy New Year from the Lake Ashton Pickleball
Association! LAPA is excited to kick off the new
year with a clinic for anyone interested in learning
the game or improving their skills. The clinic will
focus on basic skills but is perfect for others just
wanting to brush up on their game for the new
year. Calvin Eakins will lead the clinic on January 6,
January 13, and January 20 at 2 pm. This is a great
way to learn the rules of the game, improve your
pickleball skills, and meet new people.
The second event will be the annual meeting on
January 25 at the HFC. It will include a potluck
dinner. For those planning to attend there is a signup
sheet at the HFC. At the annual meeting,
officers for the 2022 year will be elected, a
financial update will be provided, and any other
issues of concern to the members will be
discussed. If you are interested in serving as an
39
officer in the LAPA, please let one of the current
officers, Calvin Eakins, Lisa Savala or Chuck Caesar,
know. Also, please let them know if there are any
topics that you would like included on the agenda
for the meeting. Thank you to the members of the
CDD board for authorizing the improvements to
the fences around the pickleball courts. This has
really improved play. LAPA is looking forward to a
great year and many new pickleball friendships!
LAVA AUXILIARY
By Chris Graves
Next Meeting: January 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the
Clubhouse Ballroom, near the stage. You are invited to
come check the group out and help to support
veterans. There are several activities and fundraisers
scheduled for 2022. The first event of the year is our
Community Tag Sale (Garage Sale) in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. The Community Tag Sale will be open to the
public and will be held on March 26. It is a great
opportunity for you to sell your unwanted items –
perhaps even some of those holiday gifts that you
really wish you had not received! Please — no clothing
donations. Share a table with a friend or donate some
of your items to the LAVA Auxiliary. The donated
items will be sold and the money will benefit the
veterans. Table rentals are $25 and will go on sale
February 1. As always, LAVA Auxiliary could never do
as much for the veterans without the help and support
of the wonderful Lake Ashton Neighbors.
Visit the Clubhouse hallway to admire this quilt
created by LA residents Maxine Ritter, Pat Howe,
Terri Mattocks, Jackie Tice, JoAnne Malcolm, Nancy
D’Herin, Pam Fex, Rosalie Freudenberger, Leslie
Kennedy, Marie King, Judy Robertson, Margaret
Guilliam, Marsha Martin,
Lorna Ashton, Betty
Turpin, and Nancy Hallfin.
Each season a new quilt
along with a sign
identifying the
contributing quilters will
be displayed, showcasing
the talented residents of
Lake Ashton.
