Love yourself then share that love with others.
Live everyday like it could be your last day on earth.
Laugh every chance you get, it’s good for the soul.
Lastly, know your history, share your history, and
embrace your history.
Blessings,
-Dwana Bradley

on a monthly rotating schedule. We consistently support local and global artists and feature their original artwork, prints and
mixed media on paper. This month we introduce readers to an award winning South African artist and ceramist Andile Dyalvane.
Andile
Dyalvane was born in
Ngobozana, a small village in the
Eastern Cape province of South
Africa in 1978 and received a
National Degree in Art and Design
from Sivuyile Technical College
in 1999 followed by a National
Degree in Ceramic Design from
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan
University in 2003.
As the founder of Imiso Ceramics
in South Africa’s Western Cape,
Andile Dyalvane has exhibited
extensively in South Africa and
has been awarded residencies
in Denmark, France, the United
States, and Taiwan.
“Everything
we do has an
impact.”
-Andlile Dyalvane.
Andile Dyalvane’s work is in the
permanent collections of the Iziko
National Museum, Cape Town,
South Africa; Nelson Mandela
Metropolitan Museum of Art, Port
Elizabeth, South Africa; and Yingge
Ceramic Museum, Taipei, Taiwan.
“One of the reasons I chose
ceramics is because it reminded
me of my childhood,” says Andile
Dyalvane, recounting the mud
objects that he and his friends
in Ngobozana, a village in South
Africa’s Eastern Cape province,
used to make as kids when they
weren’t sliding down a muddy
slope into a refreshing stream.

An expert in law tested Jesus asking him which is the
greatest commandment in the law?
Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your god with all your
heart and with all your soul and
with all your mind”. The second
greatest commandment is to
“Love your neighbor as yourself”.
]
This means the moment we get
into agreement with God and
accept Him into our lives we are
changed. God’s love should be
received with an open heart and
reciprocated in return. There is
an urgency that you will begin to
feel to want to seek after him,
pursue and get to know more
about Him, learning to trust in
his word and promises. You will
develop a genuine relationship
that will bring joy to the heart of
God. There is nothing more God
would truly want than to have a beautiful bond full of
experiences in sharing life together with you.
Our God expresses the
type of love that is “Agape”
unconditional.Love is the
greatest commandment
that God has given
us to follow and obey.
Matthew 22: 34-40
One that comes to mind is pretty easy “serve”, give
your time by giving someone your undivided attention
strengthening your relationship. Show gratitude with
the little things that matter most
by just being in the presence of
someone and listening. Share the
Joy and Laughter of memories.
The most important thing we can
do in life to remain content is love,
meditate on God’s word, allowing
Him to teach us our purpose and
in giving Him all of the Honor and
Glory.
As we remain conscious at all times in continuously
loving God. We also should love others. There are many
different ways to express your love.

honoring Martin
Luther King Jr.’s true
dream?
By KCCI Editorial Boarda
On Monday, we once again remember Martin
Luther King Jr. There will be events to honor
the civil rights icon’s legacy. Speeches will be
given. Comparisons will be made about what
racial discrimination looks like today and what
it looked like in the 1960s. Some of MLK’s
dream has been realized.
Much of it, arguably, is still a work in progress.
How do I know? I see it through the eyes of
KCCI’s journalists of color. I read the comments
emailed to us about them. They tell me what is
said to their faces - or whispered behind their
backs assuming they don’t hear. Emails they
get, and comments they hear from the public
criticizing their work tend to be more harsh
and judgmental than their white colleagues.
Although I know these words affect them, I see
these same journalists persevere and persist.
Their tireless work, unique perspectives,
life experiences and civility enrich our news
content every day.
Iowa’s on countless lists as one of the best
places to live in America. But what is it like
if your skin isn’t white in this majority-white
state? I can’t answer that but as I listen to my
colleagues, I’ve continued to gain perspective.
From what I’ve seen and heard it’s clear, our
state has a problem. It may lie under the
surface and be less obvious to you and me.
In our chamber meetings and our other
business events, it rarely gets talked about.
Instead the focus tends to be on our good
news, our list of greats.
In a conversation I had with one of our
journalists, I commented about how we could
help them deal with an issue of discrimination
they were experiencing. Their response,
“Brian, for you it’s an ‘issue’ but for me, it’s
every day of my life.” That’s an eye-opening
perspective.
Our state, our business community, KCCI is
made better, stronger and more creative with
a more diverse workforce and population. Let’s
all pledge to give our best efforts to increase
diversity, to be more inclusive, to completely
wipe out any form of racial bias that exists.
Not just on MLK Day but every day. If we each,
in our own way, can do that, then we would
be truly honoring the dream of Martin Luther
King.

explain. I had to make some decisions last year.
I took a close look at myself and decided to get
back to me. I have many people who ask me,
“what do you mean when you say get back to
me?” There are many demands on my life by
many people. I’m a person who would rarely say
no to anyone who asked for help. I made sure
everyone was taken care of at the expense of
my mental well-being, physical health, and
spiritual health. I decided last year, that if I didn’t
get my physical, mental, and spiritual house in
order, I would be in trouble. So, over the course
of last year, there were five women who made
an impact on my life. These women jumped
started my self-care. Are you looking to take
care of yourself in 2020, if so, I would read about
these women below, they would love to help you
too!

I have always loved the idea of helping someone
feel better. I remember my father’s family
being into natural wellness before knowing what
it was called. They used herbs and foods as
medicine, massage, colon cleansing and reflexology
as ways to help the body heal itself.
Several years ago, my mother had quite a few
health issues which eventually led to an early
departure. This led me to learn more about
natural wellness and how I could contribute to
preventative and alternative natural care.
I went to school and continued my wellness
education which encouraged me to start my
business called:
I was tipping the scale at over 300 pounds and
found myself depressed and not living life to
its fullest. Then, through a series of events
that happened in my life, I was “sick and tired
of being overweight” and I focused on my diet,
exercise and prayer life and I found the tenacity
to push through my fears, tears, and cravings
which gave me more energy and confidence.
I was able to reverse several chronic medical
issues, such as being diagnosed as medically
obese and being a severe asthmatic, all by losing
weight.
My name is Zakiya English and I am originally
from Gary, Indiana and moved to Des Moines
in 1997. I am the owner of Soul Fit, a personal

1:1 training. I combine my passion and innovative
style to inspire individuals to lead a healthy/
fit lifestyle.

lives. I do not want anyone else, especially in
the African American community, dying from:
diabetes, stroke, heart attack or any obesity
related illness due to lack of exercise and a
poor diet. I want to be a resource for people
to come listen to some good music, get a good
workout in and leave with a recipe for a delicious
& affordable meal idea. It does not have to
take hours or cost a lot of money to get a good
45-minute workout in a few days a week and eat
healthier. It does take dedication &
consistency!
When you find something you like to do, it feels
less like a job and more of a
thankfulness that you get to move your body
without the aches and pains that inactivity
brings. I know life is busy but we all must put
ourselves and our health first. You only get one
body and you must exercise and take care of
that body by moving it and exercising constraint
in the foods you choose to eat.
Don’t compare yourself with others.
LOVE WHO YOU ARE!. Get active, eat as clean
as possible, get some rest and repeat this
daily and your body will reward you!

with individuals. I also offer Personal Development
Programs and Group Coaching within my
company. I am a very practical and results-oriented
person and that is how I coach. I believe
that helping people take positive steps -- repeatedly
and over time -- big things can happen!
My favorite quote is:
Life is meant to be lived fully and with great
intention!
My motivation stems from my own personal
journey and from seeing firsthand (with so many
family and friends) how lifestyle diseases are
affecting families. I feel very inspired to bring
awareness and teach people that there is a
better way! We don’t have to sit back and wait
for a huge crisis to come into our lives. We
can choose to take-action and create and live
healthier lives. I’m truly grateful that I was able
to lose over 115lbs and find ways to manage
my stress in positive ways. It has made such a
tremendous difference in my life. I’m thankful for
being able to study with Health Coach Institute
and be able to put more of the pieces together
to understand why some things worked and why
some things didn’t. I know how hard it can be to
create lasting change in our lives and I would
love the opportunity to help make it easier for
others. Having a coach to talk to each week is
easier than going at it alone. My greatest joy is
helping others move from surviving to thriving.
It’s no fun to be stuck in survival mode going
through the motions. I love helping people find
hope and joy in the journey!
My favorite quote is:
“Life is meant to be enjoyed, not just endured”

Janice Health and Wellness Coaching
I help people manage their stress, lose weight
and gain energy so that they can enjoy life to
the fullest. We live in a very busy world and
people are experiencing stress overload. This
chronic stress leads to 80% of the health problems
we see today. But there is hope! My mission
is to help people slow down, create and
live a healthier life, one that they don’t feel the
need to escape from. I’m able to provide the
right support, the right system and the right
accountability to help people find the lasting
results they are looking for. Each week I help
people become more in tune with what their
bodies are saying and what it all means and
helping them to figure out what the best plan of
action is to move forward. As we learn positive
ways to manage stress, we begin to feel better,
healthier, more energetic, and more empowered
to make our dreams come true.

others. If you take care of others, they will take
care of you. I enjoy talking and listening to other
people’s stories. I’m really in my element when I
can educate another person.
I had a very fortunate upbringing. My father is a
26-year veteran of the United States Air Force.
My mother, a former Junior USA Olympic
Gymnast, who left home at age thirteen to join the
circus.
My parents met in Spain and got married in the
mid 70’s when being a biracial couple was still a
rarity. I spent my first 16 years traveling throughout
Europe and the Pacific Northwest with parents
and a younger brother. We moved to California in
the mid 90’s where I finished high school and went
on to play Division I basketball, earning both my
undergraduate and graduate degrees in
Education from San Diego State University.
At an early age, I learned the importance of
building a strong foundation through commitment,
integrity, and work ethic. While I have a passion
for traveling abroad and all things sport, I love my
family and giving back to the community. I reside
in Urbandale with my wife and two young children.
I have been volunteering for various organizations
since high school, most recently in Des Moines for
Mercy One in the NICU, and Easter Seals Iowa in
their Life Club. Volunteering reminds me that the
smallest acts can have the deepest impact.
I’m an advisor for, if not, the largest mutual Life
Insurance Company in the US. Here’s what I
know. Financial Planning is an important life skill
that we aren’t all taught at a young age. If you are
anything like me, until I got into the business,
I didn’t know much about the financial industry.
I was raised on the principles of putting in an
honest day of work, with the intention of being
able to pay my bills and taxes on time and to not
owe people money. I know how to write checks
and save money. I had a very limited scope of retirement
planning. I got into this business to help
change the perception of our industry and give
access to people that wouldn’t ordinarily seek it
out. I educate on a ton of different financial topics.
It’s a long list, but the bottom line is this, everyone
is different and in different places and spaces in
their lives. At the end of the day, people want to
know if they are going to be okay financially.
I help people plan for that. I want to help you
sleep better at night knowing you have a good
plan in place, and you can protect the ones you
love. I do my best to help answer any questions
and refer to other service providers like attorneys,
CPAs, life coaches etc., to encourage a more

approach. You can’t do anything in this life without
the help of someone else. I’m always looking to
pay it forward.

People A Unique Heritage

׉	7cassandra://TvPKa-8QQFbX9HxfAbPu9JiouLS7cnkxeM2pDidy_LIB`̵^PثsHpbhj׉E	The Gullah people are African Americans who live in
the Lowcountry region of the U.S. states in Georgia,
North and South Carolina, and Florida, in both the
coastal plains and the Sea Islands. The Gullah/Geechee
people today are descendants of enslaved people
from African countries of Angola, Senegambia, the
Windward Coast, the Gold Coast, Serra Leone and
Mozambique of West and Central Africa.
They are a proud African people with a rich heritage
kidnaped and forcibly brought to this country in the
early 16th century. Their language and culture are
mixed with the Africans of other tribes, languages,
religions and cultures as well as English to form
a distinct dialogue and culture that did not exist
anywhere else in the world. They developed a creole
language, the Gullah language, that still retains much
of its African words, intonation, rhythm and the
African influences that makes them distinctive among
African Americans and any other people existing in the
world.
The isolation of the sea island communities of
the Gullah/Geechee people from outsiders has been
essential to the survival and preservation of the
language, culture and tradition as well as the historical
bases of the people. The Gullah people are survivors
of the middle passage with its horrors of persecution,
rape, starvation, and inhumane conditions traveling by
force from West Africa to the Caribbean outpost into
slavery.
The Middle Passage was forced, cruel and a deadly
voyage of Africans crossing the Atlantic Ocean to
the world of slavery. Africans from various countries
on the continent were enslaved in America, Brazil,
and the West Indies. It is estimated that from about
1518 to the mid-19th century, millions of African
The URBAN EXPERIENCE | 2020 25
men, women, and children stolen from their homes
made the 21-to-90-day voyage under inhumane and
barbaric conditions. Millions did not survive the ship
conditions.
Historically, in the 15th 16th century, it was against
the religious doctrine to take anyone who was
baptized into slavery. Due to the greed and wealth
of the slave trade the church adopted a policy of
freedom in heaven for the enslaved African people.
The government further provided legislation that
prohibited teaching slaves to read. They were further
complicit in the designation of the slave as property
to be returned if they escaped north to a free state or
Canada. There were many slave laws that promoted
the slave trade. Laws that made any child born to
an enslaved person property who could be sold or
inherited by others.

helped form our nation’s global economic footprint.
The estimated market value of the enslaved population
by 1860 had reached seven times the value of currency
in circulation. When a slaveholder needed cash, he had
three options: 1) rent out the labor of a person he held
in bondage; 2) sell that enslaved person to someone
else; or 3) maximize profits by leveraging the enslaved
person as highly liquid collateral against loans to
finance continued wealth. Enslaved people boosted the
economy not only with their labor, but their very lives
and that of their children.
I write about the resilience of the Gullah people,
to focus a lens on the triumphs of a people through
every conceivable hardship and community survived
detion. The Gullah people are alive and well.

It is important to remember the life, the contributions,

Stood Still:
I
t had been an amazing day so far! The church
service was phenomenal, and a group of friends
and I had gotten together after service for a
housewarming party. The food was on point and
there was lots of laughter as stories were being
shared.
Then my friend received the call. Her face was
contorted with sudden grief. I was in shock and
utter disbelief as she shared the news of Kobe’s
death with the rest of us. It was as if the air
was suddenly sucked out of the atmosphere.
No one could believe what had just been said.
Simultaneously, we all reached for our cell phones
to gather more information. It was as though I was
punched in the gut…no…worse!
I tried to downplay what I was feeling, but the
emotions immediately set in, and I had to get up
and excuse myself from the gathering.
Unable to comprehend what had just happened,
I stood in the bathroom staring at my reflection
in the mirror. I was completely devastated by
the news of Kobe’s death, but more than that,
something within me was deeply shaken to my
core.
As the tears flowed, I struggled to gain insight
into my emotional meltdown. What was going
on? I just didn’t understand. All I knew was that a
hidden trauma of some sort was just awakened. I
knew I could not stay in that bathroom forever. I
had to get myself together as best I could before
returning to the group.
After emerging from the bathroom, I fought
extremely hard to hold back the depth of the
emotional torrent that had just rocked my world.
There were memories shared by others. There
was talk about Kobe’s greatness and all that he
brought to the sports world. There was extreme
sympathy expressed for his family and the families
of all who suffered the loss of their loved ones.
The more that was shared, the more I knew I had
to get out of that place before I completely lost
it. Thankfully, someone else had to leave. My
opportunity for escape had arrived.
On the ride home, I was silent. My wife could sense
that I was deeply troubled, and she attempted
to console me. My mind was unreachable. I was
there, but I was not there. We finally arrived at
the house, and my wife promptly left to attend
another preplanned engagement. It was just me
at home; alone with my thoughts.

nonstop tears. Yes, I was naturally saddened by the loss
of such a great legend and all the others involved in that
terrible crash. I continued to struggle emotionally, but
it was not just about Kobe. There was something much
deeper – much more obscure than the initial grief I felt for
his sudden death.
As I continued to contemplate the depth of my melancholy,
the precise incident that was triggered eluded my conscious
mind. I scrolled through Facebook and Instagram postings,
and the pain grew deeper and deeper. The tears flowed
with a vengeance and there was no end in sight. I felt
like screaming. I felt a sense of destructive desire. I felt
as though my world as I knew it was disintegrating right
before my very eyes. What in the world was happening to
me?
I conceded to the feeling of depression. I let myself feel
whatever it was that was working its way to the surface
of my mind. Post after post displayed an overwhelming
showing of grief from people across the world. Men,
women, boys, girls, athletes, public service workers,
businessmen, rich, poor, educated and undereducated,
and even the POTUS shared the same sentiment.
The URBAN EXPERIENCE | 2020 29
Kobe Bryant literally touched the world! He has proven
that no matter where we come from, no matter our social
or economic standing that we all hurt the same! Hurt
knows no color. It reaches and touches us all!
Further, I observed a very important connection through
Kobe’s untimely death. From my previous article: “Why
Are Men Afraid?” some months ago, I spoke about the
importance for men to express their feelings! Ironically,
Kobe’s death inadvertently gave men around the world
a legitimate opportunity to drop their “macho” act and
allow themselves a chance to really feel the deep pain
surrounding his passing. To be honest, as mental health
gains more and more attention, this unfortunate incident
could very well be the catalyst to men becoming more
expressive and open to sharing their true feelings!

going to change the world on a much more intimate level.
I believe that men across the world will let go of their pride
just as they are doing while continuing to grieve the loss of
an NBA Legend and icon in Kobe Bryant! My goal in writing
is the same. I desire for men to openly and honestly express
themselves and their feelings!
We miss you tremendously Kobe! Thank you for showing
us how to be men, husbands, and dads committed to their
children – particularly dads to our girls! Your legacy will
continue to carry on as we emulate what you brought to
the game and to our lives! We will continue to pray for and
support your wife Vanessa and the girls. R.I.H. my brotha! We
love you.
Decisions without action are like unrealized dreams. This
isevident in a lot of the things we tell others. With the start of
the New Year, it is common that many people “decide” they
are going to get fit. You can make a definitive decision to get
fit all day long, but if you don’t get into the gym, that decision
is just another decision.
If you want to see a difference in your circumstances and
move towards a brighter future, you have to commit to the
decisions you make concerning your life.
We all know the definition of insanity is doing the same
thing over and over but expecting a different result!
If you want something different, you have to do something
different.
You now have the tools needed to experience a brighter
future. The ball is in your court as it has always been. As
with basketball, you have a fifty percent chance of scoring
if you shoot the ball, but if you don’t shoot, you have no
chance of scoring. In a nutshell…there is no change if there
is NO CHANGE!

– You Can
By: Dr. Hayley L. Harvey, D.D.S., M.S.
My greatest professional passion is to ensure that all
members of our community receive high quality dental
healthcare. As the Section Chief and Director of Dental
Education at Broadlawns Medical Center, I’m proud
to be able to fulfill my passion and make dental care
accessible. However, oral health is more than visiting
the dentist. You can improve your smile every day with
these tips.
Tooth decay is preventable: You can prevent this
infectious disease. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria on
teeth that breaks down foods and produces acid which
destroys tooth enamel.
1. Drink fluoridated water. This can reduce the amount
of decay in children’s teeth by 18-40%.
2. Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride
toothpaste.
3. Clean between your teeth daily.
Diet is important: You can make healthy food and
beverage choices. Empty calorie foods such as candy
and snack foods like chips are hard on your teeth. They
offer no nutritional value, and the amount of sugar that
they contain can lead to tooth decay. Sugary drinks are
even more harmful because they provide your teeth
with a constant sugar bath.
1. Keep added sugar in your diet to a minimum.
2. Drink water—particularly fluoridated water.
3. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin D, calcium, B12
and iron. These nutrients are important for oral and
general health.
Oral health is a window to your overall health: You
can positively impact your overall health by taking care
of your mouth. Your oral health might contribute to
various diseases and conditions, including:
1. Endocarditis
2. Cardiovascular disease
3. Pregnancy and birth complications
4. Pneumonia
Tobacco and medications impact your oral health: You
can stop using tobacco products. All tobacco products
have a negative impact on your mouth. Also, certain
medications can reduce saliva flow, which helps protect
you from microbes that multiply and lead to disease.
• Cigarette smoking can lead to oral cancer, oral
lesions, gum disease, and tooth staining.
• Vaping increases your risk for gum disease, bruxism
and tooth damage.
• Smokeless tobacco causes oral conditions such as
gingival keratosis, halitosis, enamel erosion, gingival
recession, gum disease, and tooth loss.

the oral health disparities that exist in our country for
many racial and ethnic groups, by socioeconomic status,
gender and age. According to the CDC:
• The greatest racial and ethnic disparity among tooth
decay in children aged 2–4 years and aged 6–8
years is seen in Mexican American and black, nonHispanic
children.
• Adults aged 35–44 years with less than a high
school education experience untreated tooth decay
nearly three times that of adults with at least some

See a dentist regularly: You can schedule regular checkups.
If you don’t have a dentist, I invite you to access
high quality dental healthcare at the Broadlawns Dental
Clinic.
About the Broadlawns Dental Clinic: The Broadlawns
Dental Clinic provides emergency, preventive and
comprehensive dental services for patients of all ages
from children to adults.

in the Broadlawns Medical Plaza, expanding to 22
operatories. Last year Broadlawns Dental Clinic served
14,145 patients. Broadlawns accepts most commercial
insurances and all state insurance plans. In addition,
eligible Polk County residents may receive coverage
under the Broadlawns Community Care Program. For
