By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
Welcome back to all residents returning from summer vacation! It is great seeing smiling faces eager
to take part in entertainment shows, fitness classes, club meetings, movies, games, and more. In this
edition of the LA Times, staff is going to ensure resident's social calendars are packed. Be on the
lookout for the insert in this issue announcing the 2022 Entertainment Series. There are excellent
shows and events planned for the remainder of this year and the beginning of next year. Staff is
already starting to plan the 2023 Entertainment Series. Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters with hints
on who might grace the Lake Ashton stage in 2023. We hope you enjoy all that is yet to come!
October is breast cancer awareness month. Please see page 28 for a compilation of events and
activities meant to support and honor fighters, survivors, and caregivers.
With the increase in returning residents, extra caution is needed on the roads. As always, because Lake
Ashton has narrow roads shared by pedestrians, golf carts, vehicles, landscaping vehicles, delivery
trucks, and bicycles, it is extremely important to observe the posted 20 MPH speed limit and always
obey all stop signs when traveling by bike, golf cart or vehicle. Also, be sure to wear reflective clothing
when walking or biking during hours when light is limited and always walk facing traffic.
Supervisors met on September 20 and approved the
extension of the aquatic plant management, pool
ma intenance, and l andscape ma intenance
agreements. Other actions were taken and can be
found in the wrap-up report that was sent out on
September 24 via email blast. Please send an email to
cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com if you would like a copy of
the emailed wrap up report. The next Board of
Supervisors meeting will be on October 18 in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. A Joint CDD meeting with
LACDD and LAIICDD will be held on October 18 at
11:30 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. All residents are
encouraged to attend. Please stay tuned to media for
more information regarding these meetings. Agendas
will be posted on lakeashtoncdd.com on October 11.

By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director
This summer has been one unique summer! Both clubhouses (Lake Wales and Winter Haven) are
planning lots of activities to keep our residents physically, socially, and mentally stimulated. The
COVID pandemic continues to affect attendance and that’s understandable. Our Canadian neighbors
will have forgotten us if this keeps up! It’s important to remember that the Governor’s mandates are
to be followed and LA II CDD is not a private entity able to make their own rules. Staff at the HFC will
always mask up if a resident requests it, to feel safer interacting. Signs are up ... “Wearing is Caring”
re: masks. Being vaccinated is strongly encouraged. At the time of this writing, the boosters for Pfizer
and Moderna vaccinations are available to those 65 plus and those who are immune compromised.
The October 15th LA II CDD meeting will be finalizing the FY 2022 Budget. It will begin at 9 AM at
the HFC and will also be available via Zoom. Information will be circulated for comments and the
Zoom address soon.

New activities at the HFC include weekly LA
Scoops, an ice cream social event from 1-3 PM
Fridays. We are forming a martial arts class and
we are also having hand building clay classes
starting this month. The HFC Corn Hole
Tournament on Friday, October 1st has 24
teams signed up and competitors will be vying
for the $75 first place, $50 second place and
$25 third place awards. A book signing event
is scheduled for Monday, October 11th from
10 – 11 AM with our resident author, David
Cline and his murder mystery, Capital
Corruption. Our monthly Reminiscing Trivia will
be back this month from 2-3 PM Wednesday,
October 13th. You will get more information
about these activities, our special parties, and
our seminars via the Lake Ashton Connection
Newsletter, Constant Contact and HFC
posters. Don’t forget to get your costumes
ready for the big Halloween Party on the 22nd!
Do you like books? The HFC is looking for a
volunteer to come in weekly to help with the
bookshelves and puzzles. Stop in at the
Activities Desk from 8AM – 4PM Mondays thru
Fridays or phone: 863-595-1562 if you are

two tortoises native to the United States (the
other is the Texas Tortoise). How does a
tortoise differ from a turtle? A tortoise is
merely a turtle that lives on land. They should
never be placed in water. They are found in
Florida in the scrub habitat where it's typically
sandy. Their favorite foods include Prickly Pear
Cactus and Gopher Apple. They burrow and
provide housing for over 70 other kinds of
animals like Burrowing Owls, Raccoons,
Opossums, snakes and rats. It's hard not to
notice when one is renovating its home
because the dirt flies out the front door with
gusto. These burrows are typically 10 - 35 feet
long. Gopher Tortoises are occasionally seen
at Lake Ashton since it borders some of their
habitat on the Lake Wales Ridge. It's always a
special treat to find one. However please note
that it is illegal to handle them without a
special permit.

YLA LOOKS
LA ( LW) HOA
CORNER
By Ken Rickey, President
The HOA wants to be fair but
firm in dealing with compliance
issues. As such, the rules need to be followed by
everybody — not just the people down the street.
Each month a specific area of compliance will be
concentrated on in order to better serve the
community. This month, the HOA will be looking at
house paint and trim and checking for signs of
repainting or cleaning needs. The Design Guidelines
specify the colors for the base color, trim, shutters,
front and side doors for the house. The approved
colors are available on lakeashtonhoa.org under the
architectural information section and at the HOA
office. Welcome back to the neighbors who have
been away for the summer. For those who have not
kept up with Lake Ashton news while gone, this is a
short recap (for the others this is a review)! Three of
the HOA Directors resigned in May due to health
reasons. The new appointees are Secretary Keith
Stevens, Treasurer Bob Prowant, and Assistant
Secretary Debby Landgrebe, joining Vice President
David Muller and President Ken Rickey. The vote on
the CC&R revisions was postponed until legal issues
have been straighten out. While that is happening,
the HOA Board and the CC&R committee have
been working diligently to further clarify some of the
wording and to present the document in a more
readable and understandable format. Hopefully the
final rendering will be much more acceptable to the
members (you) for a positive vote. A management
company has been hired to assist the HOA and ARC
in the duties and responsibilities to keep Lake
Ashton the premier 55+ community that it has been
for the last 20 years.
SUBMITTING ARC
REQUESTS ( LW RESIDENTS)
By Iris Realmuto, LW ARC Chair
All external changes you make to your home require
an ARC request and approval prior to starting any
project. To submit an ARC request, go to
lakeashtonhoa.org, and download the form which
can be found under the Documents tab in the
Architectural Information section. You can complete
the form by hand or on your computer. Then email
the completed form to admin@lakeashtonhoa.org.
DO NOT USE THE ‘SUBMIT NEW REQUEST’
feature on the website.
The form can also be found on the information wall
in Clubhouse Ballroom. You can either drop the
completed form in the HOA box or have it scanned
at the Clubhouse Office prior to dropping it in the
HOA box. The deadline for complete ARC request
submissions is 5 pm on Wednesday prior to the next
ARC meeting. The ARC meets the second & fourth
Wednesday of the month. You will be notified of the
status of your request within a few days of the
meeting.

)PARKING & ROAD SAFETY REMINDERS
SAFETY
Staff and Supervisors have been working with the Lake Wales Police
Department on ways to improve the safety of the roads within Lake
Ashton. Residents are reminded that the speed limit throughout all of
Lake Ashton is 20 mph and all golf carts, vehicles, and bicycles should make a complete stop just before
the white stop bar whether before or after the posted stop sign. It only takes a moment to follow the
traffic controls that are in place that could potentially prevent a serious accident. The Lake Wales Police
Department is increasing their patrols in Lake Ashton and have already pulled over some residents for
not stopping at stop signs. Please take a little extra time to ensure you maneuver throughout the
community as safely as possible to avoid a ticket and more importantly, an accident. The following
excerpt was taken from Florida State Statute 316.1945 Stopping, standing, or parking prohibited in
specified places. For the full statue, please visit www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?
App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.1945.html.
No person shall stand or park a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except
momentarily to pick up or discharge a passenger or passengers:
1.In front of a public or private driveway.
2.Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
3.Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
4.Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing signal, stop sign, or traffic
control signal located at the side of a roadway.
Keep in mind the streets in Lake Ashton are very
narrow and there are many forms of traffic which
heightens the danger during busy times. The
information listed above will be passed along to
vendors to ensure they are following the established
state statutes. The following items will also help to
alleviate dangerous situations on the road.
•Do not park a vehicle directly parallel to another
vehicle.
•Do not park on a curve.
•Park as close to the curb as possible.
City of Lake Wales also has an ordinance (§ 20-14 -
Parking in residential districts) that makes it unlawful
to park overnight or leave unattended during the day
any commercial motor vehicle, golf cart, moped,
motorized scooter, motor vehicle, motorcycle, trailer,
truck, or vehicle on a public street or road in a
residential district of this city that obstructs the free,
convenient, and normal use of the public street or
road by impeding, hindering, stifling, or endangering
the safe movements of traffic or pedestrians. For the
full ordinance, please visit lakewales.elaws.us/code/

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT -
RESCHEDULED!
National Night Out is an annual communitybui

partnerships and neighborhood
cama r ader i e to make our Lake Ashton
neighborhood a safer, caring place in which to live.
The previously scheduled National Night Out was
postponed due to inclement weather and
rescheduled for October 13. A golf cart parade/
caravan will start at the HFC at 6:30 pm, travel
through the community, and end at the Clubhouse.
All Lake Ashton residents are asked to keep their
outside lights on to signify commitment to a crimefree
environment! Help make this National Night
Out a special one, and hopefully everyone in this
great community will participate. See you there!

Since all residents are a part of Neighborhood

you. Citizens Assisted Patrol does this by patrolling
our streets. CAP’s job is to look for things that do
not belong in the community. Our presence with
lights flashing while patrolling the streets is a

always looking for more volunteers to patrol the
streets. Come help be the eyes, ears, and presence

Let’s Talk WiFi Thieves (Courtesy of Law
Enforcement)
In this mobile society, everyone takes their
electronics devices everywhere. WiFi access is so
popular in public places — it’s a great way to check
email, verify financial information, do internet
shopping, make reservations and much more. BUT
you could be opening yourself up to losing your
personal information to a thief!
How it works
You turn on your electronic device in a WiFi zone.
Several choices appear. Problem? Some are not
legitimate. If you connect to the wrong network,
you could enjoy the internet while the thief is
collecting your personal information.
Connect to a legitimate WiFi connection
Look at your connection page. If you see a
description of “computer to computer” with an
icon of several computers, STAY AWAY! A
legitimate wireless network will simply say,
“wireless network” and display only one icon.
If you are uncertain - DON'T CONNECT! It's not a
good idea to take a chance. Legitimate businesses
with free WiFi are helpful to assist customers, so
don’t be afraid to ask. Finally, be sure to set up
your device so it DOES NOT automatically connect
to a wireless network! You should control the
connections — not the airwaves.

SCENES - ROCK
THE BLOCK PARTY
Residents are still talking about the
Rock the Block Party on that was held
September 10 in the Clubhouse
Ballroom. It was a one-of-a-kind event
and would not have been possible
without help from resident volunteers
and others.
A special thank you goes to Yellowstone and Tropico for the plants
and sod, Alan Cropp for constructing the light tops, and David Fix, Sil
We l l s , J o y
McGraw, Jerry
Elmers, Ron
Kosters, and
Yvonne Saunders for their assistance
with setup. They were moving outdoor
furniture indoors, hanging lights from
the ceiling, and setting up light poles,
sod, and plants. Mike Costello, the Vice
Chairman of the LACDD Board of
Supervisors, even stopped by to
supervise the setup and help move the
light poles into place!
Caroline made
handmade signs
for every street in
Lake Ashton that
were hung on the
poles that Matt
and Jar ed
painted and put
together. It was a
great example of how willing residents
are to jump in and help and highlighted
how wonderful Lake Ashton is when it
comes to working together as a team.
Thank you to all involved!

LAMGA
By Paul Fichtman
The September highlighted
events were “Beat the
Pros” on September 8th during which 9 teams were
able to beat the Pros; followed by the two-day
LAMGA Ryder Cup on September 29th & 30th,
which included breakfast, lunch and a golf hat for
each participant. Special thanks to the Pro Shop
team for taking the time out of their busy days to
participate in “Bet the Pros”.
This month the following generous sponsors who
support the annual Member-Guest tournament are
recognized: Century Buick, Hill Nissan, Huston
Cadillac, Buick and GMC, Lake Wales Jeep, Red
Hoagland Hyundai, and Ridge Quality Motors.
When you are looking for any service or product,
you can find a list of all our sponsors posted on the
LAMGA web site, Lake Ashton Living, and Talk of
Lake Ashton.
The Red Hoagland Hyundai Challenge Top Ten
Leader Board through the end of August includes
Donn Yasz - $140.10; Mike Krigelski - $129.08; Jim
Ford - $127.75; Tom Murphy - $126.85; Les
Jacobsen - $120.10; Denis Mulhearn - $114.58; Duff
Hill - $113.60; Rolly Geyer - $112.50; Pat O’Neil -
$108.25 and; Jack Farmer - $105.47. Thanks, as
always, to Red Hoagland Hyundai for sponsoring
this very popular year-long contest.
Keeping up the speed of play makes the game
more enjoyable for all participants. Here are some
tips for picking up the pace.
• Keep up with the group in front of you.
• Play “Ready Golf”. If you are not the one who is
out or away, but you are ready to play your stroke
while the others in your group are not, go ahead
and hit.
• Use the time you spend getting to your ball to
think about the next shot. When you reach your
ball, you will need less time to figure out the shot.
• If you are out of the hole or will reach the
maximum score you can take, pick up your ball.
30
• Don’t wait until it’s your turn to putt to start the
process of reading the green. Do it as soon as you
reach the green so that when it is your turn you can
step right up and putt.
• When leaving the green and returning to your
cart, don’t put your putter in the bag or mark your
scorecard until you get to the next tee.
• Do not spend more than the 3 minutes allowed
looking for a lost ball.
The October schedule is comprised of: October 6th
– Modified Net Stableford (flighted field); October
13th – Best Net of A&D Players + Best Net of B&C
Players; October 20th – Best 3 Nets and; October
27th – Pick Your Partner – 2 Man Best Ball (includes
lunch).
LA NINERS
By Diane Struble
Fall is in the air along with the much-anticipated
cooler and (hopefully) drier weather! It is also the
start of the new season which is proving to be
better than ever! October 5 is the kick-off opening
celebration which promises to be a fun-filled day
with a few surprises. The game schedule will include
some "team" games and tournaments but will put
more focus on individual games to calculate into our
handicaps.
The semi-annual Senior Orphans Collection will be
on October 26 and November 2. Cleaning supplies
in user-friendly sizes are in high demand and have
been requested. The Niners are proud to support
this great cause that helps low-income seniors in
Polk County.
The Pink Ribbon Tournament will be on November 9
so start planning, your foursomes sign-up begins
October 1 (see page 28 for more details).
Vice President Karen Ferrande will continue to
attend the New Resident Socials offering
information on the Niners. Anyone is welcome to
call Karen at 207-451-0143 with any questions. The
Niners would love to have you join!

By Lydia Fichtman
Your very own LALGA is as busy as ever planning
for the fall and the 2021-22 year. The pre-season
opener will be a Meet and Greet, Mardi Gras style,
event. You don’t need to bring any beads as they
will be provided. Come to the Pro Shop on
Monday, October 25 at 4 pm for fun, food and
festivities. Try to win prizes at different events such
as putting and chipping. All women in the
community are invited to participate and meet the
members of the LALGA.
Meet Mafie Walker
Mafie Walker was born in a
small rural village just north of
Lisbon, Portugal near the town
of Fatima. Mafie was brought
u p w i t h v e r y h u m b l e
beginnings, not exposed to
electricity, indoor plumbing and
telephones until the age of 14. In Lisbon, Mafie
went to a private school because she wanted to
continue her education and schools in Portugal, at
that time, only went to fourth grade. To pay for
school, Mafie’s mom would pawn her necklace and
buy it back each month after her husband was
paid. Unfortunately, Mafie’s mom became ill and
Mafie had to leave school to take care of the
family. Mafie’s uncle lived in America and came
back to Portugal to visit the family. At that time,
Mafie’s father was out of work and therefore the
uncle sponsored the family to come to America.
Already 21, Mafie could not be a part of the
sponsorship. In 1967, a year after the family
moved, Mafie obtained her green card and arrived
in Maryland on Christmas Eve to join them. One
month later she met her now husband Tom at
People’s Drug Store and the following September
they were married. They just celebrated their 53rd
anniversary. They have one daughter, two
grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mafie
worked in many careers and 29 years ago she
started playing golf. While living in Coral Gables,
Florida, Mafie belonged to five different golf
leagues.
32
She played golf every day! Mafie’s and Tom’s
daughter took a job at Disney and because of that
they decided to move to Lake Ashton. It was the
golf courses and the amenities that drew them
there. When arriving in Lake Ashton, Mafie joined
the LALGA and Shirley Goldstein took her under
her wing and showed her the ropes. Mafie enjoys
gardening and is an avid bridge player. She makes
creams, soaps and jewelry for fun and sells some
on Etsy. She and Tom cruise extensively and really
enjoy seeing other places and meeting new
people. The LALGA loves having Mafie Walker as
part of the league.

RARE DOUBLE BACI!
By Carl Boast
When a Bocce ball rests touching the Pallino it is
called a Baci and scores two points. This happens
34
i n f r e q u e n t l y b u t
consistently during matches
played at Lake Ashton.
When TWO balls of the
same color come to rest on
the Pallino it is an even rarer
event and scores 4 points.
Recently, Sil Wells, who
took up the game earlier
this year, accomplished this
rare Double Baci! A Double
Baci has not been recorded at Lake Ashton since
Vern Frahm made one in January. Bocce games are
played Mon, Wed, & Friday at 10:30 am. Anyone
interested in joining these games should contact
Linda or Carl Boast at 540-297-7336 to set up a
mutually convenient time for a beginner session.
Other recent Bacis of note: Pat Hodges, got one
soon after celebrating her 90th birthday, and Lee
Belding got one in her very first game!
