Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
2022 is officially our 125th Anniversary and although we’ve only
played here at Gorton Street for the last 75 years we’ve always had
our home in this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Mini’s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and I’m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, £40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. We’d not be able to operate without their contributions. I can’t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
‘Walking Rugby’ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those who’d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.
Once again, welcome to the club and please enjoy your day. Our clubhouse
bar is CAMRA award-winning and (for those over the age of 18)
I’m informed has a fine selection of match refreshment, especially
with our new friends from the First Chop Brewery.
Mark Dutton // Eccles RFC President

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME
A warm welcome to all our supporters and visitors at Eccles RFC today. The
recent wet conditions have seen lots of waterlogged pitches and cancelled
fixtures across the region. Eccles has managed to avoid major disruptions due
in no small part to the weekly efforts of our dedicated grounds team that keep
our pitches in great playing condition despite the weather. If you see a 'fossil’ in
the bar please buy him a pint! And whilst you are at it, please buy the ref a pint
too. Without the commitment of these old farts we’d have no rugby to enjoy.
Our 1XV opponents today, Liverpool St Helens, arrive in good form being
unbeaten in 9 of their last 11 ADM Premier fixtures since defeating Eccles 18-5
last November. Eccles players and supporters will no doubt recall several events
from the fixture at Moss Lane and will no doubt be looking to reverse that result
today in another close contest.
Since the opening day of the season, the Eccles 1XV has suffered from an
inconsistent line up due to injuries and player availability. As with the game at
LSH, I expect today’s team sheet will feature a number of our homegrown former
colts who are showing great promise as we build to the future. I wish both teams
the very best of luck in their exploits.
Although our Senior teams have struggled to find consistency on the field this
season, there is a renewed camaraderie within the squads and the atmosphere
in the clubhouse at the weekend is now returning to its best. We’re working hard
at Eccles to overcome the set backs of COVID by promoting the game and
invigorating its growth within our community. Since last summer, the club has
taken big strides forwards with its Mini & Junior rugby, with increased players
across all 10 teams. Whist other clubs have curtailed their development of
youth due to a decline in numbers, we’re a hive of activity and bursting at the
seams on Sunday mornings!
Our Community Rugby Coach is engaged with local schools and the club is now
growing at a healthy pace with over 460 members. Of course, this surge in
participation and the maintenance of our facilities would not be possible
without the invaluable assistance we receive from our sponsors and the continued
commitment of our volunteers. Supporting the club's activities can be very
rewarding so if you’d like to get involved and put something back in to this
community please do step forward.
Whichever team you’re supporting this weekend, I hope you enjoy your match
experience at Eccles and you keep returning throughout the season. Thank you
for your support in this our 125th Anniversary year. Let’s get stuck in!
Chris Gaffey // Eccles RFC Chairman

Spotlight on … Eccles 16s.
Following the disruption of Covid, the Eccles Under 16s returned to activity in May 2021 and
the squad has continued its growth and development since then, with new recruits bolstering
the ranks, to become a formidable team during the 2021/22 season, recording 13 wins, 4
defeats and 508 points so far.
With dedication to weekly training, the lads have shown they are willing as a group to work
hard collectively to identify and solve their own problems. Defeats to Liverpool St Helens and
Old Brods Halifax have been good lessons in the importance of discipline and urgency.
Highlight victories against Vale of Lune, Rochdale, Sale, Manchester and Heaton Moor
demonstrated the team is resilient and capable of fighting back to finish strong.
Physicality naturally increases as the boys become young men. Whilst the team has encountered
numerous ambulance call outs, A&E visits and injuries to legs, wrists, collarbones,
necks, backs, muscles and concussions this season, the depth and flexibility of the squad
has kept the U16s competitive (and the club has kept us in replacement match shorts and
shirts). The lads are displaying an admirable, unrelenting hunger and Marie has learned she
can save on washing up by simply letting them lick all the pans clean!
This season 12 Eccles U16s players were invited for DPP assessment following which 8
Eccles players were selected to represent Lancashire in games against Cheshire, Yorkshire
and Worcester, and another player was selected to join the Sale Sharks Academy. A significant
achievement if you consider the number of clubs and players in our region.
Several players have begun their DofE Journey and alongside volunteering at the club on
Saturday match days they are learning camp craft and orientating skills in readiness for their
Bronze award expedition.
The boys have formed a strong bond of brotherhood and are beginning to take responsibility
for themselves and their team on and off the pitch. As we head into spring the U16s will have
their playing allegiances tested as we face stiff competition from local Rugby League teams.
We hope we can keep the boys together to successfully compete in the later stages of the
County Cup and prepare for their next challenge, playing as U18 Senior Colts next season.
Myself and the coaching team are very pleased with their progress this last year, although
their taste in changing room match music still requires education!
Chris Gaffey // Eccles RFC U16 Coach.

Salford University Lionesses join the #PrideOfSalford
Firstly welcome to all of our sponsors who have made it down to the club today to
see where their hard earned money is spent, I want to exend my deepest gratitude
to all of you who have supported us throughout the season and during the pandemic.
Without your generosity we would not be able to provide the offer that we do to
so many.
The Ladies team welcome fellow league strugglers Darlington to Gorton Street this
sunday, after the away fixture had to be postponed due to covid this will be our first
time playing them unusual for this late in the season. Darlington have had a similar
season to ourselves often battling bravely against strong opposition but not coming
out on the side of the result they would have liked.
Eccles have seen continuous growth throughout the season having blooded
upwards of 15 players at this standard we are now starting to see the fruits of our
labour. Players such as Rhianna Scott, Evie Hancox and Helena Ryan have made
huge leaps in past games providing impetus and impact. These players are adding
to a strong core of experienced campaigners and we hope this blend of the old and
the new will lead to the perfect recipe for a result on Sunday.
Finally congratulations, firstly to those players who trialed for the Senior Lancashire
County squad this past week (Rowanne Smalley, Rhianna Scott, Evie Hancox, Helen
Johnson, Freya Waterhouse #, Leah Christian #, Helena Walker and Chris
Garner-Scott). It is a real privilege as a coach to watch your players go onto the next
level and play to the level you know they are capable of. Our second congratulations
comes with good luck as Pebbles Whaling-Mills travels to Yorkshire this weekend
with the Lancashire U18s. Our final congratulations must go to Bella Molloy of the
U13s Girls who represented the club and her school on Saturday at Twickenham
during the launch of the touch union, we are sure it won't be long before she is back
there wearing white next to her Eccles team mates. We are incredibly proud of you
all. It is a great time to be an Eccles Lady, what's stopping you joining the Pride of
Salford?

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so we’re within the RFU guidelines, and
we’re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

DUKE OF EDINBURGHS AWARD
In 2011 Eccles RFC became the first rugby
club in the UK to offer the Duke of
Edinburgh (DofE) award scheme for its
young people aged 14 to 24. A decade on,
our DofE award scheme has grown from
strength to strength, and can take great
pride in the attainment of over 200
prestigious awards (48 Gold, 62 Silver,
127 Bronze) achieved by its players. This
remarkable success is a testament to the
committed effort and dedicated persistence
of our participants and the club
volunteers who lead the programme.
The DofE award gives young people the
chance to learn new skills for life. Consisting
of four areas of personal endeavour -
Volunteering, Physical, Skills, Expedition
(plus a Residential experience at Gold
level), the DofE inspires and encourages
commitment, personal development and
an adventurous spirit in young people to
help
resilience
them gain
to
the
confidence
and
successfully overcome
whatever life throws their way. The award
programme compliments Rugby activities
here at the club and instills in our future
adults the importance of team work and
tenacity in reaching goals.
To celebrate our 10-year association with
the DofE Award scheme, this season the
club decided to proudly emblazon all new
Eccles RFC Mini and Junior Rugby shirts
with the DofE award crest. This initiative
was supported by Seward Refrigeration
and the Morson Group who provided the
financial security to ensure that every
Mini and Junior player, aged 5 to 16, could
be provided with a new full kit.
Anyone who has visited the club this
season on a Sunday morning will agree
it's been heart-warming to see hundreds
of kids running out in those sparkling new
Navy and White hoops! Although our
sponsors did not make their
commitment
for
reasons ofpublicity we think
it only right and proper that we take this
opportunity to recognise and express our
appreciation of their patronage, without
which we could not do what we do.
Eccles Rugby Football Club and our DofE
award scheme is steadfast in its principles
of inclusivity. There are many families
within this district suffering hardship and
it remains important to us that no
member is denied the opportunity to
participate as a result of financial
contraints.
Providing the DofE Award is not without
costs. The club holds a central stock of
equipment (tents, maps, compasses,
cooking stoves, gas etc) but in addition to
the annual £1500 licence fee we also
need to replace the majority of our tents
this coming year due to rodent damage
caused whilst in storage during the Covid
lockdown. So, we are delighted to confirm
that the M&J Christmas events helped to
raise £400 for our club's DofE section!
Thank you all for your generosity and
support it makes a difference. CG.

but sinking to Division Four and spending much of the 1990s attempting to come to
tearms with the new age of professionalism.
When Eccles visited Moss Lane last Autumn, the LSH officials believed it to be the very
first time the two clubs had ever met. Remarkable considering Eccles RFC is celebrating
its 125th anniversary this season and our recent research shows our club origins stretch
beyond 1897 back to 1878.
A delve into our own club archives has provided records of two events:
On Saturday 10th November, 1951 a new fixture between Eccles v Liverpool ‘A' , corroborated
by the Eccles Journal the following week, 16th November, with a match report
under the heading "16-3 win for Eccles against Liverpool "A”. Eccles fielded an
unchanged team for the third successive week when they defeated Liverpool "A" at
Guilford Road by 2 goals, 2 tries to 1 try (16-3).The game, though a hard one, failed to
produce constructive rugby, both sides relying on individual efforts. Eccles took the lead
in the first minute when Miller collected a loose ball and raced through from the half way
line to score an unconverted try. The home team kept up the pressure and increased
their lead with an unconverted try by Waller. After the interval Liverpool opened their
score when Martin scored a grand individual try. Eccles went further ahead when Davies
scored under the posts, Miller converting. Miller collected a loose ball to outpace the
visitors defence to score a try which he converted."
From the 1939/40 membership book, is a hand written record of a Wimslow Sevens
Competition. 20th April, 1940 - Eccles v St Helens Old Boys. First Round. Win for Eccles
10-5. Eccles lost to Birkenhead Park in the 2nd Round 0-10. The Committee minute
book 15th April, 1940 records the Eccles v St Helens Old Boys game kicked off 3pm and
the Hon. Sec. reported Postal Order was sent value 10 shillings for ticket. Fixtures for the
1939/40 Season were abandoned but the club’s war-time committee organised some
local away games such as this sevens competiton and also played games against Army
sides as the nation prepared itself for news of an evacuation from Dunkirk, May 1940.

x1XV MATCH REPORT
TEAM SHEETS
Eccles 7-24 Didsbury Toc H
In beautiful spring sunshine, the
teams observed 1 minute silence
in tribute to Eccles stalwart Ted
Nicholls RIP, before kick off.
Didsbury got the game underway
and enjoyed good attacking
possession for the first 5 minutes
but were unable to break through
the Eccles defensive lines and
play remained in the midfield.
After the
opening exchanges,
Eccles successfully moved the
game into Didsbury Territory for
the next 15 minutes and an enjoyable
physical contest developed.
Sustained pressure and good
passing from Eccles kept the ball
on the edge of the visitor's 22 for
several phases. Multiple penalties
were awarded but Eccles declined
to kick for points, instead opting
for the quick tap with limited
success.
On 25‘ a high tackle was awarded
and as Eccles looked to attack
quickly inside the Didsbury 22, an
outrageous late hit on Chris
Fortune went unseen and unpunished
by the official. The game
was halted for treatment to be
administered and Didsbury
escaped without card and were
awarded possession, which they
duly punted down field. The game
remained in Eccles territory for the
next 5 minutes. A Didsbury penalty
in the centre field was kicked to
touch in the right corner, and an
opening score might have been
expected from a driving maul but
the
Eccles defence
defiant. On 35 minutes, Gavin
Ackers Johnson anticipated and
intercepted a Didsbury pass on
the Eccles 22, and the winger
raced way with the bal, leaving the
pursuing fullback behind him, to
dot down between the sticks and
break the dead lock with the opening
try; converted by James Wright.
The first half was a close competitive
contest and Eccles went into
the break deservedly ahead,
having earned the lead through
strong defence and enjoying the
greater attacking possession.
HT 7-0.
Eccles however made a poor start
to the second half, kicking to Didsbury
who returned the ball through
the lines to score two quick tries
from two restarts edging into the
lead with only a few minutes
played (7-12). Eccles battled back
but were unable to mount a
serious threat to the Didsbury goal
line and the score remained
unchanged for 25 minutes as
Eccles appeared to run out of
steam. As the game edged into the
last 10 minutes it was Didsbury
who were able to find the grit to
put the result out of doubt. At 70’
sustained PnG attacking pressure
from the visiting Forwards resulted
in a 3rd try (7-17) and once again
straight from the Eccles restart,
Didsbury kicked the loose
ball
remained
through the lines to score a 4th try
on 72’ to secure the victory and
maintain their unbeaten run at the
top of the ADM Premier League
Table. FT 7-24.

Eccles Rugby Football Club encourage
Spectators to:
• Act as a positive role model to all.
• Behave with dignity and generosity.
• Support your club’s efforts to uphold its reputation.
• Respect Rugby’s values. Discipline and Sportsmanship
define our game.
• Respect the match officials' decisions, even if they
appear to make a mistake. Remember, they are volunteers
and without them there would be no game.
• Encourage all players irrespective of their ability.
Never ridicule a player, regardless of the shirt they
wear.
• Appreciate good performance and achievement
from all players, irrespective of their team.
• Acknowledge effort and endeavour rather than the
desire to 'win at all cost'.
• Support the players. Shout ‘for’ them not ‘at’ them.
• Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials
or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour
affects the players and referee’s performance and
attitude.
• Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the
competitors.
Remember children play rugby for their own
enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
