Supervisors and staff would like to wish residents a
happy, healthy New Year. January is a great time for
reflection and anticipation — reflection of the year that
has passed and anticipation of the year to come.
December was full of holiday festivities. Residents
showed how giving they are by donating to Lake Wales
Care Center, Hands 4 Hope, Be a Santa to a Senior,
Toys for Tots, The Mission of Winter Haven, Meals on
Wheels, and so much more. There are opportunities in
every LA Times to give back to charities within and
surrounding Lake Ashton. Lake Ashton is full of so many
caring residents and it is a pleasure to work for you all!
Looking forward to 2026, residents will find an
abundant schedule of activities at the Clubhouse and
HFC to accommodate the active lifestyle to which
residents are accustomed. Please keep staff informed
with any feedback or questions regarding any concerns
about the respective amenities and resident services to
ensure that 2026 is the best year yet at Lake Ashton.
Residents are urged to become more involved in
community activities designed to benefit the body,
mind, and spirit. Plan to spend time at the amenities
enjoying all that Florida’s peak season brings. Starting
the week at Lake Ashton’s Monday Coffee information meetings will provide a good overview
of upcoming classes, shows, meetings, and parties. Mix it up in 2026 and try sitting at a new table
at Monday Coffee! There are many new residents at Lake Ashton. Reach out to new faces and welcome
new neighbors.
Take a look at the back cover to see all the amazing “Simply Healthy” instructors and snippets of the
classes they teach at Lake Ashton. Make 2026 the year of transformation. Transformation of your mind,
body, and spirit. The full class listing is located on page 38.
On December 15 Supervisors met to attend to Board matters. A wrap up report of actions taken at the
meeting was sent out on December 22.Residents are encouraged to attend CDD meetings to gain first
hand knowledge of community matters. Visit lakeashtoncdd.com to view agendas, minutes, and more.
The next meeting will be on Monday, January 26.
Please note, the February LACDD (Lake Wales) Board of Supervisors meeting was
moved to February 23 at 9 am. All residents are encouraged to attend.

LA HANDS 4 HOPE

LA Hands 4 Hope
hosted their
annual Charity
Christmas Dinner
for Polk County
families. The
Grinch made an
appearance, and
as usual, stole
someone’s bag of
goodies that made all the children wild with
excitement. Santa and Jingles the Elf showed up and
presented gifts to all the children. That was the hit of
the party. We were amazed by the outpouring of love
from a few Lake Ashton residents who donated
money and food so we could make this evening so
special. Thank you to everyone involved for making
great memories for these families. If you would like
to know more or be part of LA Hands 4 Hope, please
contact Sophia Brennan (305-713-0101) or Charlie

By Marianne Zak
Meet Dr. Pamela June (pictured on the cover), a
clinical psychologist with a PhD from George
Washington University in Washington, DC. Originally
from Pennsylvania, Pamela is a wife, mother, author,
publisher, travel agent, and President of the Lake
Ashton Black Heritage Club. She is also the first
female “Woman King” in Kuntu Village, Ghana, West
Africa. Pamela inherited the traditional title
Nkosohen, meaning “Chief of Development,” from
her father, who founded a nonprofit organization in
2002 to support education and self-sufficiency for
youth in Kuntu Village. In honor of his legacy, the
village chief allowed Pamela to retain the male title.
Through this nonprofit, more than 100 high school
scholarships and 20 higher-education scholarships
have been awarded to students in Ghana.
After a remarkable career spanning
35 years as a clinical psychologist
and 15 years as a school
psychologist, Pamela retired in
2024. She has practiced in diverse
settings, taught at the university
level, trained educators in cultural
competency, mentored young
adults, and supported children in special education.
Pamela is also an accomplished children’s author. Her
first book, James Goes Fast, was published in 2023,
followed by James and Kudo Dog in 2024. A third
book, James and the Blackberry Pie, will be released
soon. Her goal is to create engaging stories that
help young children find joy in reading.
Since November, Pamela has served as President of
the Black Heritage Club, bringing an action-oriented,
collaborative approach to leadership. Her travel
business creates opportunities for trips to Ghana,
international travel, cruises, and custom
tours.Pamela and her husband, Charles Roland, have
lived on Turnberry Lane since 2019. She enjoys
travel, writing, and golfing with the LA Niners. She
describes herself as “a yardstick, with each inch
representing a different facet.” Having our own
Woman King in Lake Ashton is just one of the many
reasons our community is, indeed, Simply the Best.

Photo & Article By Barbara

The little blue heron is a tricky
one. It isn't always "blue." These
small herons start out white and
then get blotches of blue
throughout their feathers (see
above) before they finally turn
totally "blue" (dark slaty blue -
pictured at right) as full adults (at about a year old).
Little Blues "part way through" can be very
interesting looking! The way to tell an all white
immature Little Blue Heron from a Snowy Egret is
subtle at first. The Little Blue has dull yellow legs
and feet (Snowy's have the golden slippers). Little
Blues also have a thicker bill which is two-toned
with a gray base and a dark tip. A bi-colored bill
rules out Snowy. If the bird flies away uttering a
squawk of annoyance it's probably a Little Blue.
There are plenty of Little Blues at Lake Ashton to
practice your identification skills on. Getting a
photo can help.
GO BIRD WATCHING WITH
BARBARA! Meet at 8 am Monday, January
5 at the Clubhouse West Parking Lot in your golf
cart for an 8:10 am departure. We plan to tour the
east course via golf carts in search of birds. “Cartpooling”
is encouraged. Bring binoculars, water,
hats and sunglasses, and wear sunscreen or
clothing that will protect you from the sun. We plan
to bird for about 1 – 2 hours maximum.

LA (LW) HOA CORNER
By Deanne Mayne
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season
and is looking forward to 2026! Assessment
statements will be mailed out in January. Make sure
to follow the payment instructions outlined in your
statement. Remember, NO PAYMENTS SHOULD
BE DROPPED OFF AT THE CLUBHOUSE.
Compliance is still looking at mailboxes that need
some TLC and driveways that need cleaning. Some
residents have spruced up their mailboxes or hired
painters or a member of the Lake Ashton
community to fix paint, numbers, and flags. The
contact information for the Lake Ashton resident is
616-648-9890. The number of mailboxes and
driveways that need cleaning is still substantial so
we are repeating the October focus.
One issue that compliance has noticed more often
lately is trash bins that are left outside of garages. If
the bins are shielded from view by vegetation, that
is not a violation. However, many trash bins are
quite visible from the street - that is a violation.
Lastly, we will be sending out a package in the next
30 days with a need for your votes and a letter
from John Donahue, President. Due to lack of
quorum, the annual meeting will be held Saturday,
March 7, 2026 at 1:30 pm (Saturday) in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. That meeting will be an
opportunity to meet your board and to vote on
amendments to our current Master Declaration
that governs all Property exteriors.
An important note: We have changed out our
property management company as of July of 2025
to Stambaugh (863-324-5100). There have been
multiple notices online about the change and
recommendation that you sign up on the website,
lakeashtonhoa.org to get notices or links to our
ARC if you need to make any changes to your
exterior as well as documents and other important
links like over 55 affidavits.
Also enclosed are a welcome letter from property
management with sign-up information, a reminder
from the HOA’s attorney regarding compliance

NUISANCE PLANT ALERT:
TORPEDOGRASS
To r p e d o g r a s s f i r s t
appeared in the United
States in the early 1800s.
It was planted as a forage
grass for cattle and
livestock, but it quickly
became out of control,
spreading into waterways. Torpedograss is a type
of invasive grass that grows quickly and widely in
bodies of water. If not treated immediately, this
grass can obstruct water flow and limit recreational
use of lakes and ponds. Torpedograss can be
difficult to eradicate. In order to keep Lake
Ashton's waterways free of this invasive grass, Lake
Ashton staff and our aquatics vendor conduct onsite
tours of each pond and ensure there is a
treatment plan in place. Contact Matt Fisher,
mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com, with questions.

PAVER MAINTENANCE
OVERVIEW FOR RESIDENTS
On December 3, 2025, the LA II HOA Architectural
Review Committee (ARC) hosted a Paver
Maintenance informational meeting at the Health
& Fitness Center. The meeting was open to the
entire Lake Ashton community, and the ARC
thanks all residents who attended. Both the East
and West ARC committees remain committed to
helping homeowners maintain and take pride in
the appearance of their homes.
The key takeaway from the meeting was that
proper paver maintenance is a multi-step process
and that sealing pavers is an ongoing maintenance
responsibility rather than a one-time fix. Proper
paver care includes stripping old sealers, treating
efflorescence and stains, deep cleaning, replacing
breathable joint sand, and applying a breathable
sealer. In some cases, a color-enhancing additive
may be used to help restore the pavers’ original
appearance.
Paver sealing is typically recommended every
three years. Many modern sealers can be recoated
without full stripping if the existing sealer is
in good condition.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
(NW) CORNER
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Happy New Year from your Neighborhood Watch
Team. Let’s start 2026 with some New Years
Resolutions! We should resolve to make a concerted
effort to meet with our neighbors and get contact
information should the need arise. Take this
opportunity to discuss the concept of Neighborhood
Watch of “Neighbors Watching out for Neighbors”
and if your see something, let someone know. Look
around your residence to make sure that outside
property is secured as well as any foliage or
shrubbery that may offer cover to any intruders are
cut back. Check your outside lights are in good
working order as with the shorter days, this is always
a vulnerability. Additionally, make sure your
Neighborhood Watch information stickers are up to
date and legible. If you need a new one, they are
available at the front desks at both the HFC and
Clubhouse.
We put out a blast last month regarding a change to
the law regarding license plate covers and frames.
The following is a repeat of the information in the
blast:
Florida’s newly tightened rules on license plate
visibility are already catching drivers off guard. That’s
especially true for those who never suspected their
dealership-installed or personal organizational
decorative frames could land them in trouble. That’s
right, something installed by a dealer or you out on
years ago could land a driver in hot water today.
Under House Bill 253, which took effect Oct. 1, any
frame or covering that obscures even the tiniest part
of a plate is now treated as a second-degree
misdemeanor. That means a potential $500 fine and
up to 60 days in jail for something as minor as a
princess-themed border or a sports-team frame.
Your Neighborhood Watch Team recommends you
immediately remove any license plate frame or
20
covering. This way you will avoid the embarrassment
or fines. We also have more crime prevention and
safety events planned for the new year such as the
coffee with the Chiefs of Police, visit and chat by
Sheriff Grady Judd, and a public safety expo! Stay
tuned for the specifics. Again, Happy & Healthy New
Year from your Neighborhood Watch Team!

Alligators and crocodiles are an
important part of Florida's heritage
and play a valuable role in the
ecosystems where they live. Even
though the weather might be
cooling down, those who live near
lakes and ponds should still expect to see alligators
from time to time. Remember — never feed or
approach an alligator. If you encounter an
aggressive alligator, call the Nuisance Alligator
Hotline: 1-866-FWC-GATOR (392-4286). Alligators
under 4 feet in length are not considered a threat
to humans. As long as residents have a healthy
respect for wildlife, including alligators, there are
opportunities to live and let live.
There have also been reports of coyotes in the
community. Please be mindful of your surroundings
when walking at night with your pets. Make sure
you walk in well lit areas, carry a flashlight, and
avoid walking near wooded areas, when possible.

AUDIENCE MEMBER AT
SHOWS
TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE
Somehow the most obvious rule of good show
etiquette is still the most often disregarded. Be present
for the moment and turn your cell phone off or on
silent.
DON’T SEND TEXT MESSAGES
DURING THE SHOW
You may think you’re being incognito, but in a dark, the
light from your cell phone screen is incredibly
distracting to those around you.
THERE IS NO PHOTOGRAPHY
OR VIDEOING ALLOWED
DURING PERFORMANCES
This can be very distracting to the other people who
are trying to watch the performance. Beyond that, it is
distracting to the performers who are prepared to give
you the best performance possible. Finally, it is illegal in
many instances. The majority of most performance
contracts strictly forbid the recording of a performance.
It is possible you may be responsible for copyright
infringement by recording a live production.
DON’T BE THE MANNERS
POLICE
While it can be irritating when someone’s cell phone
goes off during a show, what’s even worse is when the
brief breach of etiquette is followed by a series of
overreactions from other audience members. Annoyed
“Tsks,” “Hmphs,” hisses, snarls, and shouts of “Turn it
off!” along with glares can be just as distracting as the
original disruption.
DON’T TALK DURING THE
SHOW
A quick whisper to your neighbor, or an audible
reaction to something interesting that happened on
stage is fine, but keep conversations to after the show
or during intermission.
DON’T SING ALONG
It’s tempting sometimes, we know, but it can be
disturbing to those around you. There are a few
exceptions to this rule, such as when the performers
onstage actually prompt the audience to join in.
DON’T FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE
TO DRESS UP
Although many residents usually dress up a bit, there is
no dress code.
TRY NOT TO FALL ASLEEP
Your snoring may be taken as a protest of sorts, but
generally it’s just disruptive to those around you. It’s
also insulting to the hard-working performers up
onstage.
RESPECT THE SPACE AND
COMFORT OF THOSE AROUND
YOU
Seating for the Entertainment Series can be tight, so
sometimes a little elbow bumping can’t be helped. But
you can practice good etiquette by taking care to not
lean into your neighbor or intrude on other people’s
already limited leg room.
Individual ticket sales for the 2026
entertainment series will begin January 12.
$40 for Regular and $45 for Premium.
OVERFLOW PARKING ON
THE BASKETBALL COURT
The Basketball Court near the west parking by
the Shuffleboard Courts is used as overflow
parking for golf carts during special events.
Signage will be placed at the entrance to the
parking lot advising residents that there is
additional golf cart parking on the Basketball
Court. As always, residents are encouraged to
car or cartpool to high capacity events at the
amenities. When parking in the circular drive
please find the urge to angle in and park with
both tires touching the curb.

LA COMMUNITY GARDEN
By Lynn Davis and Karen McLemore
As we welcome 2026, the
Lake Ashton Community
Garden is thriving, thanks to
our amazing members!
Our “Harvest Time”
system is in full swing: look
for yellow craft sticks marking beds ready for picking. In
December, kale, arugula, and beets were all ready to
enjoy, and our “Herb Lovers – This One’s for
You!” initiative ensures fresh herbs are available to pick
for flavoring your winter recipes.
December’s Holiday Craft Night was a festive success,
with members creating garden-inspired soaps, planting
fresh seeds, and making charming candles—a joyful way
to celebrate together! We’re also excited about our new
partnership with Kevin Baker of The Eagle’s Nest, who
will occasionally feature our garden harvests in his
monthly menu, starting this month with a delicious sweet
potato and herb recipe. Join us at our next meeting
on Wednesday, January 21 at 1 p.m. in the HFC Craft
Room, and start the year inspired, creative, and
connected!

LA BLACK HERITAGE CLUB
By Pamela June
Martin Luther King Jr.’s commitment to nonviolence
was shaped by faith and philosophy. He was inspired
by Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience and later by Gandhi’s
teachings, which transformed Christian love into a
powerful tool for social change. King first experienced
the strength of nonviolent action during the
Montgomery bus boycott, where he chose compassion
over retaliation even in the face of violence. He called
nonviolent resistance the “guiding light of our
movement. Christ furnished the spirit and motivation
while Gandhi furnished the method.” King’s vision
remains vital. Our world still wrestles with inequality,
financial hardship, health disparities, and intolerance.
His example reminds us that lasting change begins with
love and care for our neighbors. By removing hatred
and extending compassion to the disadvantaged, we
honor his legacy and continue the work of building a
just and humane society. Join us: MLK Day of Service
Food Drive, January 19, 10 am to 2 pm.

personalities and how they will react. We donated
Christmas gifts to the Senior Orphans in Polk County.
Social workers provided a list of items that were needed

MAGIC YEARS CLUB

The members of
the Magic Years
Club certainly
enjoyed the
holiday season!
On December 8,
instead of a

members got
together for a Disney holiday party at the home of

appetizer or a dessert and
enjoyed a tour of the Rapps'
home to see the beautiful
Disney decorations and
Christmas trees. A heartfelt
thank you to the Rapps!
Then two days later, many of
us met for dinner at the Columbia Restaurant in
Celebration. All enjoyed the food and afterwards got
to see it snow (in Florida!) in the Town Square. It was
great to get together. Our next meeting will be on
January 12, 2026 at 7:00 pm in the HFC Craft Room.
All are welcome who are Disney fans or just want to

“SIMPLY HEALTHY!”
Have you met all your exercise instructors who
bring you 21 classes of all varieties? Take a look
and make a plan to try something new this year.
Your body will thank you!
Meet Rebecca: No one has more
“verve” than this woman. Rebecca leads
her classes with a smile and lots of
encouragement. Whether it’s Chair
Barre, where we do aerobic exercise
and stretching using a chair for balance,
or the more vigorous Pilates classes (2
per week), you’ll feel encouraged to
move at your own pace and improve your overall
health with cardio and stretching training.
@ The HFC
Meet Laurie: With more than 13
years of classes under her LA belt,
you’ve likely attended a class with
Laurie. She leads classes at the HFC
including Aqua Pump, Dynamic
Cardio Movement, Balance Stretch &
Physical Fitness, and an Instructor’s Choice class
where all kinds of fun moves are revealed. She’s a
certified personal trainer, as well, so you can receive
next-level guidance for your increased exercise
needs. @ The HFC
Meet Kim: Come relax and enjoy the
calming moves of Chair Yoga with
Kim, who leads her classes with humor
while providing education and
encouragement. This is a class for
those of us who prefer not to get
down on a mat. She leads her class with gentle
movement, gives a wide range of moves that require
you to slow down, breathe and relax. You’ll feel like
you’ve been to the spa! $5 @ The Clubhouse
Meet Katie: Katie is leading our new
Dynamic Hybrid Stretching class,
a type of exercise that uses controlled,
flowing movements to warm up the
body and prepare it for a workout. Unlike static
stretching where you hold a pose, Dynamic
Stretching involves actively moving your muscles
through their full range of motion, increasing blood
flow, and reducing stiffness. “Hybrid” means you will
use both a chair and a mat. Bring your mat!
$5 @ The Clubhouse
Meet Paula: Paula has led Jazzercise for
29+ years and knows how to make you
forget you’re doing the work! Whether
you join the Dance Aerobics class or the
Aqua Motion class, you’ll enjoy her highenergy.
vivacious personality. Paula’s
goal is to provide good guidance in
helping you achieve your fitness goals. She changes
it up so you’ll never be bored. @ The HFC
Meet Clinton: Boot Camp
sounds a little scary, right? Not
when Clinton is your instructor!
He brings many years’
experience and qualifications as
a personal trainer in the area. It’s
the perfect time to challenge yourself back into
shape, or stay motivated. Isn’t it easier when you
work with others working toward similar goals? And
his clients love the changes they’re seeing in their
strength, tone, and energy levels. You CAN do it,
with encouragement and expert training.
$5 @ The HFC
Meet Rea: She has a zest for life and
exercise! Rea leads her Well-Being is
Now (W.I.N.) class with a vigor that’s
unmatched. Give her an hour and
she’ll give you a higher-level, totalbody
workout, including stretches,
aerobic exercise, muscle resistance,
balance, and flexibility. And
Rea guarantees you’ll have fun while sculpting your
whole body. It’s a WIN! $5 @ The HFC

The LAMGA 2025 season closed with the league’s
Dec. 3 annual meeting where Board President Rolly
Geyer announced the re-election of board members
Larry Wilson (vice president), Tim Wayt (tournament
chairman) and Jim Shillito (secretary). They will serve
two-year terms. Rolly also announced gift certificates
for the golfers who finished atop the Red Hoagland
Hyundai Challenge standings: Mike Krigelski, Steve
Kettells, Stephen Predoehl and Ed Commons. They
amassed the most amount of pro shop credits for their
performance in 2025 weekly games. Tournament
chairman Wayt reminded members of the rules
governing league play, specifically how lift-clean-andplace
is allowed in fairways only and that all putts for
scores must be holed out. No gimmes. The liberal
interpretations of these two rules have triggered
complaints from LAMGA competitors.
For January, the date members should mark on their
calendar is Jan. 14, billed as the LAMGA 2026 season
opener. The game is Beat the Board followed by lunch
in the Eagle’s Nest. Look for the signup sheet starting
Jan. 7. This month is also the last chance for members
to submit their registration for the annual MemberGuest

Forms were emailed to members on Dec. 12. The
deadline for registration is Jan. 15. Forms are also
available in the wall slot at the LAMGA bulletin board
in the pro shop.

NEW YEAR. NEW BEGINNINGS. SIMPLY HEALTHY!
January is full of opportunity to move more, feel better, and try something
new. This issue highlights our Simply Healthy program, featuring 21 classes
for all levels and interests, led by an inspiring team of instructors. From chairbased
options and yoga to aqua classes, stretching, dance, Pilates, and boot
camp, there’s truly something for everyone. Meet the instructors inside, and
explore class times on the Simply Healthy pages 37 — 39, and make a plan to
start (or refresh) your wellness routine this year. Your body will thank you!
